Capture now naming files

Hi all,
I work at a college (16-19 yr olds) and we are changing from Adobe Premiere to FCP. For lots of projects our students will use "capture now" without logging. In Premiere after capturing each clip a screen pops up and asks you to name the clip. So it's impossible to forget to give the clip a name other than a numerical addition to the previous name, which is the default on both Premiere and FCP, because the prog is effectively asking you each time. Is there a way to do something similar on FCP, to stop students having loads of "untitled"s and "filename+1,2,3" etc. I am worried that they will rename the clips in the Browser and then if we move things they will not be able to relink to the original files.
Many thanks,
Sean

As posted by Shane Ross in another thread...(in case they refuse to name their clips)
"Highlight the clip and then go to the MODIFY menu, choose RENAME and then FILE TO MATCH CLIP."
Capture Now does not offer what you're asking for.
A better alternative is to teach the students to give the clips a representative name, prior to using Capture Now...or better yet...teach them to properly Log and Capture their clips.
This will help them to look at the footage, which pays off in the long run, by having a better idea of shots they have to work with and can save drive space by not capturing bad takes and such.
Make it part of their grade. If they learn bad habits now, they'll likely carry them forward.

  • Naming files that are captured

Using Capture Now, I enter PartyTape1 in the Reel name field and create a logging bin in the Browser. After being captured it shows in the Browser as untitled. Why is this? Is there another way to name these files before they are captured?
    Thanks.

You posted your response below just before I posted mine. Thanks.
    One more:
The clip is now captured and placed in the Browser with the name, though when I check the Capture Scratch folder, FCP put a folder called Untitled Project. How do I set it so the folders in the Capture Scratch are also named?
    Thanks.

  • No audio after using capture now to log files

I'm trying to import some footage into final cut pro but having trouble getting the audio to work. I'm using my camera as a deck and I can hear the sound coming from the camera, I can also hear it when I'm logging/capturing and when i'm using capture now. someone had suggested that I turn off the audio in the sequence and canvas. I'm not sure how to turn it off in the canvas but i tried turning it off in the sequence and I still don't get audio after I capture the clips. Any ideas/suggestions?
    thanks

Was the source audio button checked to on in the Log & Capture > Clip Settings window?

  • Capture now nightmare

I have been shooting a project for 3 years and i am supposed to finish editing it in 2 weeks. I have only ever used capture now to import footage. I know its not the best way to work but its the only way i know because its how i was tought. i plan on learning batch capture, ect. when i finish this video. I have most of my footage captured, named and put in to appropriate bins, but i still have quite a bit more footage to capture.
the other day, i opened up log and capture, played my tape and pressed capture now at the begining of a clip and esc at the end of it (like i always do and always have done). it worked. then i got to my next clip and pressed capture now and nothing happened. it just stopped working. it was like it wasnt even a button. i could still play, pause, ff, rew, stop, view the footage on the tape but i could not capture now. im getting really frustrated. anyone know why this doesnt work all of a sudden?
    thanks

They are located under <user name>/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/
    Their names are :
    Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs.fcset
    Final Cut Pro Obj Cache.fcmch
    Final Cut Pro Prof Cache.fcpch
This assumes FCP 5, but I believe the names and locations are very similar in 4.5.
When you trash these preference files you will lose your user settings, so take note of what you might need to reset.
    Quit FCP.
Move the preference files to the trash.
Start FCP. It will take a little longer than usual.
Dial in your most important settings.
    See if Capture Now works.
If Capture Now works, empty the trash and finish dialing your settings in.
If Capture Now doesn't work, quit, and you can trash the new pref files and put your old ones back in place, as they were not the problem.

  • Capturing "Now" the right way?

Ok so I captured an entire 60 minute tape via the capture "now" option. I named the reel "Wedding Part 1" and the clip name Untitled 1. I then made subclips with the DV Start/Stop detection tool. When I was done with the project, I erased all the media but kept the project file. About 3 months later, I decided to re-capture the offline clips. When I highlighted all the offline clips and pressed "Batch Capture", I got a window saying "the filenames are already taken". I had to rename all 90 clips by just pressing "1" then enter, 2 and enter, 3 and enter, and so on and so forth for all 90 clips. I don't really understand why I got this message, and want to know how I can prevent this happening again. Thanks.
If it's important to know - I'm on FCP version 5.1.4 on my Macbook Pro and the entire project is DV 29.97.
    Thanks everybody.

If I understand what's going on, this is a two-fold issue.
Whenever possible, you'll want to give your captured clip an actual name - don't leave it at Untitled 1. For cases where you're capturing whole tapes, the clip name and reel name can be the same (ie. both can be Wedding Part 1, if you like).
When you're recapturing a group of subclips, they all actually point to the same media file (aka Untitled 1), so it's best to recapture only the first subclip, then, barring any oddities in naming or subclip limits, re-link all other subclips via File > Reconnect Media.
Finally, another option - and this is more of a personal choice - is, after you've subcliped your material, to select all your subclips and use Media Manager. Set to Media Manager to Use Existing, to delete unused media and to base file names on clip names, in order to create distinct media files that correspond to your subclips. It makes recapturing much easier in a lot of cases.
Also, in the future, you might want to try and see if you can use Automator to batch rename your files in the Finder.

  • No sound captured during Capture Now

First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
    Camera works fine in iMovie...

There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

  • FCP4: Can't "capture now"

    FCP4
    Powerbook G4 867MHZ 10.2.8
When I try to use "capture now" in FCP4, I get the "allocating disk space" message. I've noticed that many seem to have had a similar problem. But whereas everyone else who sees this message seems to end with the dreaded rainbow circle of confusion spinning into eternity and then discover gigantic phantom files, for me the "capture now" window just disappears after about 15 seconds and I end up right back where I started. The only evidence that I tried the procedure at all are small (roughly 200kb) files in the "capture scratch." These files do have the tell-tale av. I also have Norton Antivirus running, though I've also tried disabling it with no discernible difference.
What I find odd is that the last time I had a digitizing session (about two months ago) everything worked like a charm. As far as I can tell nothing has changed in my set-up. Now, it's not working at all.
I have four different scratch drives and have tried all of them, as well as the internal hard drive. I have tried reducing the limit of "capture now" to 1 minute. I've tried trashing the preferences, restarted the machine any number of times. The physical connections are all working, since I was able to preview the source through iMovie. (However, my digitizer doesn't import properly to iMovie, so I can't simply use that as a workaround.) I'm out of ideas. Does anyone else have some? (Please....)
    Thanks!

    Thanks!
    I'm using FCP 4.1.
QT 6.5.3. Don't have a key for QT6 Pro. Tried to get one when I moved FCP from my desktop machine (and, yes, I did properly uninstall it from the old machine), but haven't figured out how to get a Pro key for QT6, now that QT7 is out. In any case, Pro can't be the problem since I haven't had it for a long time.
I'm in the process of unistalling all Norton software—though I'm not sure how to make sure I get everything. Having looked through a number of posts, others seem to have that problem as well. But I've had NAV running for a long time and it's never interfered with FCP before. (I won't be able to check until tonight when I get back from teaching.)
At least two of the external drives are HFS, as, of course, is the internal. (I inherited the other two and away from them so at the moment I can't check them.) In any case they all seem to behave in the same way.
Yes, I'm running 10.2.8. I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school. Really, it's been very stable for me, and again it's never given FCP any trouble. But it's clear that I'll need to upgrade to 10.4 if I determine that the FCP 5/Studio will run decently on my machine.
For various reasons, primarily because it allows me to bypass you know what, I'm using an old Formac digitizer. I need to have this capability because I have to be able to extract clips (from my own library) for use in the classroom (which also explains why I only use FCP in spurts).
    Thanks!

  • Using Capture Now HELP

I am new to FCE and wish to use capture now to get a whole tape onto the system. I have set the time limit to 60 minutes. Then when I start Capture Now everything runs okay until I get a message stating. "Capture ended due to lack of disk space" on viewing the contents/data regarding the file it has copied 9.25 minutes of video at 2GB.
I have a 500Gb external hard drive nominated as a scratch disk.
I have tried altering system settings in FCE but still have the same problem.
I am using a canopus advc110 to transfer the video onto the system.

you should reformat your external hard drive to os extended. copy everything on your external you want to keep, then reformat.

FCP X?  Then you need to use a different forum...This is the FCP 7 and earlier forum:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/final_cut_pro_ x
FCP 7?  Did it look like it captured normally? Everything go smoothly?  Stop normal?  Did an error occur at any point?  Can you open the file in QT?
In the future...do not rely on ONLY FCP for this task. Get a reputable recorder that can record to ProRes. AJA KiPro, KiPro Mini, Atmos Ninja, Decklink Recorder...lots of options.

  • Capture Now does not complete capture

I completed a project with 7 DVDs. I found one, the first one, that had an error. It has been about 5 months since I completed this first DVD. Since I needed more disk space I could not keep all of the information for the seven disks so I started deleting the files for DVD #1. Consequently, I cannot go back to the original FCE data. I decided to play DVD #1 through a converter and capture it in FCE as a new project. I did this once before and it worked, but not this time.
The DVD is 1 hour and 13 minutes long. I hooked up a TV so I could see what is playing through the converter and also watch the Capture Now on the computer screen. This is what happens. The DVD plays perfectly from start to finish on the TV screen AND on the Capture Now screen on the computer. However, when completed the Browser shows that only 43 minutes were transferred to the sequence in the Browser. I tried it twice with the same results. I set the Capture Now length to 90 minutes.
How do I capture a 73 minute DVD that was originally burned from FCE via Quicktime? John

Hi Ian. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but we were away for a couple of days. Good to hear from you again, especially when your suggestion, as usual, worked. I had never seen DV-NTSC DV Converter, but it worked. I did not want to split the DVD into two parts, so I greatly appreciate your solution.
By the way I did finish 7 DVDs, used a printer (Epson 300) that could print labels on the DVDs, made ten copies put them into booklets {which I purchased through our library) and distributed them to our extended family yesterday. I am now ready to start a new project so you may hear from me sometime in the future.
Again, many thanks for your help. John.

  • Captured AVI type2 files shown up short after imported in CS3 PremierePro

Am a new user with On Location 3.0.159. Have encountered strange issues to the AVI type 2 files record via through 1394 from DVcam Deck Playout in slave mode. When clips imported to CS3 Premiere Pro, files read only 10' only on the time line as rest of files looks as cut out and missing where the original recorded clips were 28' in total. Have checked with scrubbing through DVR as both Video/Audio were fine in full 28' duration and there weren't any issues or error before the clips was ejected. Also I've checked the files with other player and they also reads 28" in full. Am I missing something?
Currently using latest CS3 Premiere Pro 3.1.1 with XP2 platform.

Took me couple of days nailed down where the problem was since there eren't any log's or error found nor system error as indicated.
OnLocation/direct to disk recording has no issues at all with these files batches, it acturally does faultlessly with tape direct captured to disk as well as Camera. The reason am trying captured batch of contents that runs for more than 4hrs. And working with CS3 Premiere under AVI-1 type take much longer conforming and indexing the contents as such. So by switching with OnLocation using AVI-2 type which Premiere like reducing the confroming time by almost 1/2, due to the fact that I'm working with mixed batch of contents in the field.
As for the issused am experiencing with these file were caused by 3rd party plug-in codec, some references already demonstrated and addressed with similiar issuses in the Premiere CS3 user forum, ref link http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c064185
After I've un-installed the 3rd party plug-in, and bin it back to Premiere CS3, and there weren't any further issues with these batched captured AVI-2 files. All shown in full faultlessly!
Think this app really comes in handy for field user.. anyway thanks for your response..
and now needed to re-look into these 3rd party codec.

  • Capture Now with DV Start/Stop Detect maintaining Timecode

I am a new Mac user coming from Adobe Premiere Pro. In Pro, I could capture an entire tape into individual clips. I am now using FCE4, and have found the Capture Now option, as well as the DV Start/Stop Detect setting. The resulting segments show an In point based on the timecode of the tape. When I rename the file and move it to a different bin, I lose the timecode (in list view, in and out point state Not Set). Is there a way to maintain timecode to keep my shots in sequence?

  • Capture Now does not stop after the limit is exceeded........

    Hi,
I'm using FCP HD 4.5 on a DP500 G4, OS 10.3.9. I'm doing "capture Now" to get some VHS video into my machine. FCP will not stop the capture no matter how I set the time limit. This used to work, so what did I do??
    Quite frustrating.
I've told FCP that I'm using a "non-controllable device" but the capture just keeps on going and going and going..........
    Help......
    Pete D.
    dual 500 G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

When I tell it to stop it responds and stops just fine..... if it's been going for 10 minutes I have a 10 minute long file - even if the limit was 3 minutes......
What happens when you tell it to stop rather than
    relying on the time limit?

  • FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes

Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Just to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

  • Capture now limitations (time lapse)

I need to capture 24hr long video segments, but it seems that FCP may limit its capture now settings (I tried my first test run and it didn't save the clip). I am using a digital camcorder and the capture now setting on FCP. I have changed the capture preset to only capture 3 frames per second and I am capturing in a compressed format. Any help on how to make this happen?

Boy, capturing a 24 hour long clip - that's pretty intense. I would suggest capturing it in smaller chunks, simply to make it more manageable.
If that isn't an option, you should be able to capture for whatever length of time you want - as long as you have enough memory, of course.
What you should need to do is choose File, User Preferences. Then, under the Scratch Disk tab, there should be a line at the bottom of the window that says Limit Capture Now To. If the box is checked next to it, FCP will only let you capture that length of time. If the box is unchecked, you should be able to capture however long you want.
It's definitely possible there are other factors. I'm not a FCP wizard. But a hint to getting good responses in this forum is to list, in detail, what system you are working on and what version of FCP you are using. If your question is about cameras and other hardware, list the specs for those as well.
Hope some of this helps. Good luck.
    jesse.
