FCP 4.0 issue - using capture now, freezes after 5 minutes

Capturing miniDV to FCP 4.0 using capture now on external drive. Never had any problems in the past, but now FCP freezes after a little more than 5 minutes of capturing. I have to force quit. When I find the file on my hard drive it's about 10 GB. Haven't used FCP in several months. Is it possible some settings got screwed up? No problem capturing via iMovie 4.0 so the problem doesn't seem to be with the drive.
Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Just to reiterate what Shane and David told you. Updating to QT 7.4 is probably not going to solve your issue. It might make things worse though. You need to do what they said and get your quicktime version they recommended. Now, if it works for you, fantastic, but there have been enough posts on this topic and chances are very slim to null that QT 7.4 will work for your version of Final Cut.
And please be prepared to do an erase and install if the archive and install does not work.
One more idea might be to use a program called Pacifist. (Search the forum for Quicktime and Pacifist) You may be able to use that. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here.

  • Capture Now Freezes

I frequently capture video in to FCEHD using capture now. I've double checked all of my settings but my computer always freezes when I capture a clip greater than 4 minutes in length. I also have a MacBook Pro where I can capture 15-20 minutes at a time with no problem. I also have a lacie external hard drive hooked up to my G4 where I capture too, but I've also hooked it up to the MacBook and have had no problem at all. Then when the computer freezes it completely locks up my internal hard drive and I have to end up powering off the computer manually. When I restart, I open my external hard drive icon and the clip ends up having a (-av) behind the title and the clip almost takes up the entire hard drive space (about 300 GB). I can then delete the clip, which does free up space and start all over.
    Thanks for your help!!

Well, I checked the specs on FCEHD 3.0 and your version of OSX is ok. The minimum requirements are:
    • Mac OS X 10.3.7 or later
    • QuickTime 6.5.2 or later
If you upgraded to QuickTime 7 on the Panther machine, however, that could be the source of your capture problem. Admittedly I'm guessing there, but I encountered enough other problems with QT7 on Panther machines that I long ago stopped installing it unless the system already had Tiger (10.4) installed.

  • Allocating Disk Space using capture now.

FCE seems to freeze up with a messege that says "Allocating Disk Space" when using capture now.

If you have an anti-virus app running disable it.
Check FCE>System Settings>Scratch Discs. Make sure the Limit Capture Now has a value entered and the box is ticked. Default is 30 mins, it can be changed to suit the capture.
If you find a huge file with nothing in it this a probably a result of not having a value set. Delete it and start over.
When no value is set, FCE does not know how much drive space to allocate, so it grabs everything it can get it's hands on. That's why you can get that huge useless file.

  • Lack of disk space using "Capture Now"

aright here's the situaton.. evry time i capture footage using "Capture Now" it captures it for a while and then just stops and a window pops up saying: capturing ended due to lack of disk space.
    How can i fix this?

I'm thinking it might be closer to...
    1) Set a limit on Capture Now. Never have that box unchecked. Set it to 60 min if you want the whole tape.
    2) Do not under any circumstances run any anti-virus/filesaver software. Including Norton and Virex. Sure, Apple doles out Virex for free, but FCP doesn't cooperate with it very well.
If you absolutely feel you must keep Virex installed on your system then use Kevin's script to shut it off before you use FCP:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.68a85d17
    3) Do not capture to your main system drive.
    4) Check the format of the drive you are capturing to. It should be Mas OS Extended, jornalling off. If it isn't, copy your files from it and re-initialize it. If it is any other format, you will encounter problems. If not at first, then eventually.
    Good luck,

  • Using Capture Now HELP

I am new to FCE and wish to use capture now to get a whole tape onto the system. I have set the time limit to 60 minutes. Then when I start Capture Now everything runs okay until I get a message stating. "Capture ended due to lack of disk space" on viewing the contents/data regarding the file it has copied 9.25 minutes of video at 2GB.
I have a 500Gb external hard drive nominated as a scratch disk.
I have tried altering system settings in FCE but still have the same problem.
I am using a canopus advc110 to transfer the video onto the system.

you should reformat your external hard drive to os extended. copy everything on your external you want to keep, then reformat.

  • No audio after using capture now to log files

I'm trying to import some footage into final cut pro but having trouble getting the audio to work. I'm using my camera as a deck and I can hear the sound coming from the camera, I can also hear it when I'm logging/capturing and when i'm using capture now. someone had suggested that I turn off the audio in the sequence and canvas. I'm not sure how to turn it off in the canvas but i tried turning it off in the sequence and I still don't get audio after I capture the clips. Any ideas/suggestions?
    thanks

Was the source audio button checked to on in the Log & Capture > Clip Settings window?

  • Capture Now Freezing

I just got a Canopus ADVC 110. Everything connects fine and works well. I can moniter play and watch video in the capture windo. I have my VCR connected to the converter via RCA then to the computer with FireWire. When I try to capture "now" the window that shows what I'm capturing freezes. And I get a clip that show's a half second of action and sound and then a minute of still frame. I'm confused with what to do. I've check a lot of other discussions and help guides online and in books. The iMovie capture works great my Final Cut doesn't. I'm using Final Cut Express 2. Please help I would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the DV Converter setting in FCE?

  • Cannot import using "Capture Now"

I have what I hope is a minor problem with importing HDV using Final Cut 7. I can import fine using "Clip", where I set the in and out points. But when I want to simply "Capture Now", it fails every time. It captures for less than one second, then says "searching for media", but never finds/imports anything.
So my question is, why would 'capture clip' work fine but 'capture now' doesn't work at all, using the same media? I am using a Sony FX-7 HDV camcorder via firewire, Final Cut 7, and the HDV 1080i60 codec.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Yes the tape is playing, but it only shows the image for about 1 second, then it goes black and says "searching for media". The tape continues to play in the camera, but FCP won't import anything.

  • Unable to Initialize video deck, you may still use capture now. ??

Im trying to capture footage off my sony DCR-TRV900. Ive been able to do it before, but all of a sudden i cant. Ive tried all sorts of crap like switching cables, even sending the camera in. I dont know if settings got messed up or crap like that, but now my FCE is just acting weird with the camera plugged in. If i try to start it with my camera plugged in with VTR on, it will just crash. Ive been using FCE for 2 years now, and i really don't think i changed anything preference-wise. The only MAJOR change to my computer has been leopard, and if that somehow screwed it up, i will be ******. I can capture using a different camera, by putting the tape that i used in my 900 into a DCR TRV9. however, it always fails to capture correctly, screwing up the audio and leaving it un-synced. If someone could help me, it would be a life saver, thanks. Also, i wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but i taught myself how to use this program from the ground up, so i might be missing a crucial step.

    Let's start over.
I confused myself by invoking the Capture window. Of course that didn't work.
This was a completely different problem. My apologies.
The real problem was that the Log and Transfer window displayed ONLY the Logging pane. The clip list and queue pane were hidden and I couldn't get them back. I eventually found that resizing the entire window - even a small nudge - restored the missing panes. I expected the pane divider bar to not reveal the clip list, but this doesn't happen until the bar gets at least halfway across the window at which point the pane suddenly pops into view. This also confused me.
For the record, I'm using a MacBook core solo running Leopard. My Panasonic SD1 camera is not connected. The files from dozens of camera cards are stored on an external USB drive. I copy selected AVCHD folders from the USB drive to the root directory of the MacBook boot drive so that FCE will recognize them. The scratch disk is a large Firewire 400 drive also connected to the MacBook.

  • FCP 7, 'Capture Now' suddenly stops working

I have been capturing footage from several tapes for many days now, with zero problems. I started doing some more today,
also with no problems, until about the 4th capture attempt. Suddenly, when I hit 'capture now' during playback, nothing at all
happens. I have more than 2TB of free space on my scratch disk, and no capture settings have been changed. I can control
the deck just fine, so communication between the deck and FCP is not an issue. But it literally went from being fine for one clip,
and completely non responsive for the next. I closed FCP, powered down the camera, re-seated the firewire cables, turned the
camera back on and re opened FCP. Same thing. 'Capture Now' doesn't do a thing. I have imported more than 15 tapes without
a single issue, now suddenly I am dead in the water. What am I missing?
I am using a Sony HC-1 with DV footage; Easy Setup set to DV NTSC, Device Control to Firewire NTSC. As I said, device
control works perfectly, but capture suddenly will not initiate. It's as if the 'capture now' button just went dead,
    so to speak.
    HELP!!

Trashing preferences did the trick, and that app was great. So I was able to get up and running again and get a few more tapes imported. But NOW...
I put in another tape this afternoon, and now when I hit 'capture now' it appears to start the capture, goes for approx. 1 second, then stops and says "searching for media". Nothing I have tried solves this problem. I have powered everything down, unplugged/replugged everything, no help. SO frustrating!
    'Lil help??

  • FCE or FCP for Capturing Now?

I like to use the capture now feature when I use FCP at work? Someone told me this method of capturing works better using FCE. Is that true? Is there a difference? I sometimes get audio and video synch issues using FCP and capture now, would that improve if I got FCE using capture now? Thanks for any input.

They work identically. Sync issues are most commonly related to not using capture settings that match your media.

  • Capture Now Limits- Audio Video Sync Issues?

In a creative cow podcast the author mentions that if you capture in FCP for more than 30 minutes, your audio and video can go out of sync, and recommends limiting capture now to 10 minutes.
I was wondering what the communities thoughts or experiences were on this.....
    Thanks!

I'm having similar problems although I never used to. But note:
I'm having sync drift problems with material shot with and capture from Sony DV Cam devices. Different clips have different degrees of drift from 1 to 12 frames.
For now, I think I shall resort to a 10min log and batch capture approach.

  • Archive a FCP Project to DVD (with used captures only)

Is there a way to backup a project with USED Captures only.
So, the FCP file with the used captures, delteing all the unused captures.
Would be a great option to use or make correction in the future!

Backing up to DVD is probably the worst type of archive, not just because of the limited data space available but because the disks do deteriorate as a vastly increased speed compared to tape.
Even hard drives, if used for archiving and just left on a shelf can fail because they are not used!
Tape is still the best and most reliable.
We've been experimenting with Bluray data backups but of course, always have a tape back up on top of that!

  • Capture Now doesn't capture all

I just starting using HD. The Capture Now is not capturing the whole tape. Plus, it captures segments and numbers them. How do I get it to capture the whole tape?

If there are breaks in the recording, FCP makes new clips by default.
You can change this behavior in preferences:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23293?viewlocale=en_US
In general, it's best not to use Capture Now, since you can lose frames.
It's best to set an in point and and an out point, and use Capture Clip.
Here's some good advice on capturing HDV:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/capture_hdv_prores_fwbalis.html
Of course, you still haven't told us what format you are using.
You'll get better answers if you supply more details.
Since you said "tape" we assumed you're using HDV.

  • Capture Now Doesn't work

I recently had audio dropout problems when shooting an event...it was my camcorder's fault....my brand new Sony PD170 ended up getting repaired. Now I'm trying to log and capture the tapes. I have batch captured some of the footage but have been having trouble capturing some clips...it's always the clips with glaring dropout issues. When I try to batch capture these clips they remain offline. I figured it might be a timecode issue, so I tried capturing the offline clips using "capture now." The first clip I tried to capture ran about 5 seconds with no problem and then stopped and I received the message "Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved."
For your information, I know how to do a "Capture Now"....am just experiencing problems for the first time now. Also, want to mention that under User Preferences, I UNchecked "Abort ETT/PTV on dropped frames" and I UNchecked "Abort capture on dropped frames." Under System Settings I checked "Limit Capture Now to 30 mins."
Am I doing something wrong or does it make sense that due to my camera problems I will never be able to capture some of the footage? Thanks so much for your help.

'Problem Ticket' huh? That's good, Patrick. When I worked for the telephome company in Washington, D. C., three or four lifetimes ago, we called them Trouble Tickets.
I might incorporate that phrase into this current thread, when I revise it in v2:
