Capturing Advice

hey everybody!
usually I just ''capture now" then edit. but now I have about 25 1hour mini dv tapes playing back on a dv deck thru a canopus 110....the footage is just forums so I don't care so much about losing quality, and I don't need all the footage I just want some highlites from each tape. Problem is, as we know, I cannot hear the audio during capture to determine what points I want to capture. I really don't want all 25 hours of footage eating up my external hd space. Is there anyway or another way to be able to hear the discussions and just capture those parts? I also have imovie hd/and the latest versions of Imovie if that matters.
Any thoughts? I have a feeling there is no way to do this. Thanks for any help!

hi tom....what exactly do you mean? If you mean using the camera audio, I am not using a camera, I am using a playback deck and hence no sound from that. should I use a tv monitor would that work?

  • HD Stop Frame Capture Advice Needed

I am currently capturing a lot of old 8mm and Super8 film using CaptureMate software. However, Capturemate only supports SD resolution and I would like to capture the film in HD.
Would anyone have a suggestion for similar software that would support HDV. Quicktime will capture an HDV video stream just fine, but there is no facility in QT for stop frame. Capturemate works great as it is triggered by mouse clicks. Set up a frame in the camera, click the mouse, capture the frame, move to next frame.... etc.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

Finally found a video tutorial, and it appears iStopMotion is mouse click on a SMALL button, but I don't think it will work at 8-12 click per second. Besides the HD version does not support HDV, only HDMI input AND the HD version is $499 US. About 12 x what I paid for a SD solution. And + the cost of an HDMI card AND the cost of buying a Mac Pro - about another US$3000 minimum.
I just need a single purpose app that just does frame capture at about 8 to 12 frames per second. No onion screen, no editing, no special features, just simple frame cap with a preview screen. If it works on a G4-733 OS X 10.4, that would be perfect.
    Thanks

  • I have a 2008 black macbook and access UK tv through a purchased proxy site. I want to buy a sony bravia internet connected tv to watch the channels in more comfort. Sony tell me this won't work - that the tv cannot capture my macbook content. Any advice?

I have a 2008 black MacBook and acess UK tv through a puchased proxy. I want to purchase a Sony Bravia internet connected tv and stream the site through a tv - Sony tell me this won't work - that a latest model tv cannot capture content and sites from a MacBook - is this true???? Surely there is a solution? Any help or advice welcome.

They are correct.  The only stream you can wireless connect the TV to a Mac is through an AppleTV, and that's purchased content on iTunes, and your own homemade content that is H.264 MPEG-4 that is 1800kbps.   Conversion of commercial video to that format is illegal, and hence how can not be stated on the forum.    Alternatively, as long as the TV is HDMI, you can wired connect it to your MacBook using the same advice here:

  • Advice on using long captures

Here is what I do on a routine basis for a friend of mine that races cars. We race all weekend running 2 or 3 races, practice runs and qualifying. His in car system records the footage onto tapes: 1 tape per race and then qual and practice on a tape. I then capture all the raw footage and get to work. One of things I do is cut out caution laps, mark key moments such as a spin or a key pass to make it more enjoyable when watching the DVD later or posting to web. In addition I use iDVD and setup chapters and titles and then burn 8 or 10 DVDs for the weekend. Anyway, I have been using iMovie but really struggled locating the key points b/c there is no timeline. I have FCE now and started watching tutorials to help me make the transition.
Any advice on how best to use FCE to achieve my desired result of a DVD with titles (races/practice/qual) and chapters (key moments)?
    Thanks in advance

Assuming this is a recent iMovie, just import the footage into FCE. It would be better if you could capture in FCE as it captures in a different format. The iMovie audio will need rendering in FCE. I;m assuming this material is being captured as DV NTSC.
In FCE break sections down by making them subclips. Use bins to organize the media. Edit your material. Add the chapter markers to the FCE timeline when you're done. Export to QuickTime Movie with chapter markers. Take that iDVD and make your chapter menu as before.
It'll take me a while to download the Road America video, but I'm looking forward to it.

  • JVC HDV Capture settings + Hardware advice for HDV capture

We have 6.02 FCP Studio2. We shot JVC HDV 720 60P footage (1280 x 720) and are trying to capture thru FCP. We have the JVC GY-HD200U camera and the JVC BR-HD50 outboard deck. Other than the AJA HD 422 device, what are my options (hardware and software) to capture with Log & Capture in FCP? I need In/Out points of course.
JVC HDV says it has a great HDV workflow in FCP, but they don't tell you how (at least where we have looked on their website)
Unfortunately, Blackmagic's Intensity Series cannot control the devices via the HDMI link (One HDMI output is on the JVC BR-HD50 deck). We thought that might work.
Can anyone give us advice on the settings in FCP to control our HDV deck or Camera? We would prefer to keep everything digital, via firewire
Thank you everyone for your help. I did search for this topic and found nothing. I am sorry if this has already been covered...

Connect your deck or camera via firewire to your Mac, and then select the easy setup in FCP's FCP menu that matches the format you've shot. I'm pretty sure for a device control setting either your camera or deck would use HDV Firewire Basic as a device control setting. Other than that it should use the stock preset for the format you've shot.

  • Urgent Help, Thanks to any with advice... (capturing HDV)

Hello, my name is Justin. I am under the gun and have to turn in my final movie project this week. I have footage on my Canon XH A1, shot in HDV, 24F. When I capture to Final Cut Express 3.5, my footage is slightly fast. My audio is in real time but my footage is at about 115% percent. Needless to say this will not do. I tried all 3 HDV easy set up codecs. Help?
    Thanks for any advice...

    Hi Justin
How were you capturing the video, off the same camera you shot on. Problems occur if you you shot on a panasonic and capture off a sony as an example. Shoot and capture off the same an you should not have a problem.
A 2nd solution send the clip to the time line unlink the video and audio and slow down the video 1 or 2 percent at a time until there is a sync up. Might not work, but when in a bind any port in a storm!!
I shoot HDV as FCE3.5 allows me to capture the whole tape and it creates clips were as this would not be so with sd. The Sony HVRA1 has guides for on the flipout screen and the viewfinder.
Let me know if you come right!!

  • VHS/Hi8 capture - futureproof workflow advice

I have a massive project on my hands....  I have hundreds of VHS tapes and tens of Hi8 tapes I want to convert to digital form.  For the past several years, I've been meaning to get around to this project, and have accumulated quite a bit of hardware and software.  I've read a ton of formus and blogs on the topic, and quite a few questions were answered, but was hoping to get some advice from people who've done this and have some retrospective advce.
Here is my list of software/hardware
MBP i7 with 10.7.2 (will prob downgrade to 10.6 for this for canopus software reasons)
JVC HR-S7800U SVHS deck (with TBC)
    Sony RDR-VX500 VHS/DVD combo recorder
    Canopus ADVC-300
    Sony Hi8 Camera (S-Video Out)
    Sony HVR-A1U HDV camera
Blu-Ray Burner - will put in external case for use with MBP)
    Final Cut Pro 7
    Final Cut Pro X
I have many questions and would really like advice on setting up a workflow to capture these tapes.  I want to futureproof this collection, meaning I want to capture the best uncompressed video possible while at the same time not becoming wed to Final Cut or Apple-only formats (a la FCP7->X issues).  Remember realmedia was really neat about 15 years ago???
What capture format is the best:
    Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC 48kHz or Uncompressed 10-bit NTSC 48kHz
Anyone optimize the hardware setting on the ADVC-300?  I wanted to just capture without the canopus software to make everythign consistent. Where do I put all the dip switches?
    IRE 0 or 7.5
Video Audio adjust on or off
    Chroma filter on or off
External or Internal vide sync mode
    Thank you very much!!

    Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
    Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48kHz
Not a forum expert here, however I completed a very similar project your are describing here.  Very tedious and had its issues and challenges.
Here are a few things you should think about.  One of the big issues with VHS format is that it is analog and has no timecode as found on modern dv tape based and file based cameras. Is this important to you?  To me it was a big factor in utilizing it with other NLE suites down the road.
What I did was to capture/record each hour of vhs to minidv tape to create an archival copy with timecode and 48khz audio, then capture with FCP.  In addition to timecode and ability to cleanly log and transfer clips, the audio track  will be compatible upon capture in FCP.  Batch Capturing of non digital tape may (or "will" is a better term here) create audio drift and other audio issues.
I would recommend doing the same with the Hi8 tapes.
If you proceed without the above process and just batch capture directly, do some research on the camera that was used to record the tapes you are working with.  The audio track recordings vary widely from camera to camera and a become issue which must be addressed in altering sequence and capture presets in FCP.
I know recapturing dv essentially "doubles" work but down the road you will always have digital tape archival backups which can be easily recaptured if necessary. Use quality tape. I made sure my dvtape deck heads were clean before and during the transfer and upon FCP capture there appeared to be absolutely no generational "loss" of video or audio quality.
As Studio X answered above, DV file format stored in your project file on scratch disk for FCP will be fine for most NLE suites in the future.  Just remember to back up your scratch drive on site and off site.
Hope this helps and good luck!

  • Capture Device Advice

I did a forum search but to no avail and of course, this may not be the best forum for this to be asked but I do so anyhow knowing there are some enlightened souls here who could likely offer me advice.
I'm having trouble keeping my camcorders (Canon ZR Series) up and running in regards to capturing. They work great otherwise, for what we are using them for, but the firewire ports are constantly shorting on us. The repairs are becoming too costly to keep up with as we're having to spend more than the camera is even worth to try and get them working again.
I know there are other options to use for connectivity which would allow us to bypass the firewire connection altogether. Granteed, I'd lose the digital quality but at this point efficiency reigns supreme over quality. I'm looking for recommendations on a couple of things:
    1) I've found plenty of easy fixes, such as the Diamond Capture Device and a few other "one touch" solutions that exist. The problem I've had with Diamond (actually ordered some and then returned them) is that the video being captured was in a much smaller resolution and the image literally had to be stretched to take up the entire screen. Is this normal? Is there a way to capture in analog but not lose extra resolution/generation in doing so? I felt like I was losing twice as much quality as I should have been by stretching the video out.
    2) How much am I losing in visual quality by using an component or S-video?
I need a cost-effective solution until I can order new camcorders which wont be until next fall.
    Thanks for reading!

  • Advice with capturing process

    Hello
I need some advise with the capturing process of a documentary project.
The circunstances: I have shot with Sony A1 in HD 1080 50i quality, so I have my video in Mini DV tapes and I going to use FCP 6.05 to edit the project.
I have 12 tapes to capture and 1T hard disk space in an external disk with e-sata conection.
    First doubt: format
As I see it I have two options when capturing. whether I can capture in SD or in HDV, what do you recomend?
My main concern is, that giving the fact that HDV works with interframe codec, it could be a problem importing in 1080 i50 format for FC6. Would I need to transcode to Apple pro Res or something in order for the application works properly?
In the other side, I could import in SD and recapture later in HD if I need a better quality.
The matter is..., I have been told is it is better to work in native format, the best quality possible, always you can...
    Second doubt: workflow
I know this is a question of personal preferences, but I need to hear here opinions. When you Log and capture, what better option.
1- Minute tapes and afterwards log in FC and capture
2- See the tapes in FCP and log directly on the application
3- Log authomatically the tape ( with the separate-shots-in-clips mode active) and capture the whole tape in a row, and check video after in FCP?
Please, dont hesitate in advice me, I really need to clear this out before starting the project, in advance, thank you very much for your help!!
    jeym

    Hello again guys
I have finally captured in HDV. Yes, Michael, my workflow plan is to transcode when picture lock is done.
Nevertheless, I have never used mediamanager before. When I worked whin Avid MC I did the transcode in the same application. I suppouse I will use mediamanager if I must ( if I can´t do it with FC itself). So I really dont know how it works
Mightmunken, I hope to be able to deliver in blueray or something, DVD is to poor ( in case I have to be DVD I have already all the workflow from my previous works, only it is in Avid!!).
Ross, thanks for your comment, right now I have space enought, so it´s not really aproblem for me, but it´s good to know for future projects.
Ian, thanks for your advise, I am exactly in this step of trying, the only thing is I just want to consider all options and hear some opinions before adventuring myself.
I would let you know how the project is doing.  As I have said before my main concerns are:
1- If FC will work properly with HDV native media ( interframe compression is not good to edit with, although I know FC can do it).
2- The transcodification and compression afterwards. In my previous projects I cant use Compressor because the resoult was very desapointing. I had to research and ask in forums to get another application to have the work done.
3- As I say, I will try to burn it in blueray so I will no need to compress ( altought I will nedd to transcode). In any case, right now I think the workflow will be ( if possible):
    A- Edit.
B- Transcode to ProRes when p-lock to get it to color etc,
    C- Transcode to blueray.
Have any of you have try this workflow? Any advise in the matter?
Thanks again to all of you, really appreciate this disscussion

  • Advice Needed for Video Capture Device

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a USB (or Firewire if they exist) video capture device that can take S-Video and composite connections. Could someone recommend me best one under $150 that is compatible with Snow Leopard? Also, and more importantly, does anyone know if it is possible to capture the signal via Quicktime Pro or Final Cut Pro rather than bundled third party software.
    Thanks!

I used the predecessor to the Canopus ADVC55 to load VHS tapes into a mac.  As I recall I brought the firewire signal into iMovie (could have been Final Cut Pro too, as I had both on the system). Here are the specs:  http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc55 .     Also some comments on it at http://www.amazon.com/Hardware-ADVC-55-d-Converter-Ntsc/dp/B000HGVZG0/ref=sr_1_2 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1323954590&sr=8-2   Here's another source to buy it: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/312315-REG/Grass_Valley_602005_ADVC_55_Ana log_to_Digital.html .
They also make an ADVCmini, which I haven't used, which is probably less expensive, with specs at http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcmini

  • Need Advice: Which Camera 4 Capturing HDTV & Flipping Monitor Horizontally

I have CS4 Premiere and need to buy an HDTV camera and have questions how to achieve the following:
    1) Capture hours of continous video direct to PC hard drive without stopping.
    2) Display in real time a monitor image with the video flipped horizontally on a consumer LCD HDTV, so the monitor image is reversed as if you were viewing yourself in a mirror (we're recording a makeup artist who is applying makeup to a woman and needs his monitor to reflect a mirror-like image)
Any idea how to flip a monitor signal horizontally? I know how to do this in post production, but I need to do it on the realtime monitor feed from the camera.
Your recommendations for HDTV camera that works well with CS4, probably feeding a USB-2.0 signal to the PC.
    Jonathan in Atlanta

I've learned that Adobe OnLocation when capturing video has a setting to flip video horizontally in the monitor display, so that would be a solution. (Few LCD consumer TVs have any ability to flip in hardware, except for Sharp LCD's which seem to have a mirror command, or professional video monitors which often can flip.)
My nagging problem now is apparently OnLocation cannot capture video from the newer HD consumer cameras which only have USB 2.0 and HDMI outputs, whereas OnLocation CS4 at this moment appears to only support 1394 firewire. New cameras no longer have 1394 outputs, the trend is to USB 2.0

  • Advice on compressing screen capture movies for web ?

    Hello everyone,
I just am curious about what is the best way to go for compressing screen captures so that they maintain the best clarity for text. I've gone back and forth between MP4 (improved) and quicktime movies set to h.264... I am just curious what the general opinion here of what is best to use? It seems that MP4 improved produces larger files with less quality... Also it was a little confusing to see that compressor's h264 option is for "apple devices" or "dvd studio pro" and thus doesn't offer streaming as an option as it does with mp4-- so the only way to properly produce h264 files for web is to use the quicktime option and select h264 as it's compression type? Is this correct?
    -patrick

What is the frame size of your source clip, and what frame size have you chosen for your output?
Exactly what settings have you tried so far? Please share some details
I would recommend using the Apple > Other Workflows > Web > Download > QuickTime 7 compatible > H.264 LAN as a starting point.
Set a frame size (i.e. 1280x800, 1024x768 or 768x480, if you have a widescreen computer display) and adjust the video bitrate accordingly. The frame size you choose, should be divisible by 16, 8 or 4, for best quality. Have a look at this article for more info on that: http://www.flashsupport.com/books/fvst/files/tools/video_sizes.html
For more info about H.246 and macroblocks, have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264
For more details on getting the most out of H.264, have a look at the Apple tutorial Creating Amazing Video Content with H.264.
    1. Find the frame size you would like to end up with
    2. Adjust the video bitrate accordingly (set the keyframe interval to automatic)
    3. Enable Frame Controls in the Inspector window, and set the Resize Filter to Better or Best (gives you much better quality on downscaling, than without frame controls - do a test and see for your self)
An other good tip, is to set an in/out point in the Preview window in Compressor, with a duration of maybe about 10 secs. That way you do not need to encode the whole clip just to test your settings. Add multiple settings, before you submit the batch. When it is done, see which one you think looks the best compared to file size.

  • Have several Hi 8 tapes needing captured to digital files for conversion to DVD; need advice...

The tapes are from an old Sony TRV-308 (Hi8, non stereo).  Has an S video out and the standard 1/8" A/V out.
Will PRE 10 capture the video with the correct capture card?  What capture device do you recommend for a x64 bit Windows 7 machine?
Also, which format would you capture the video / audio?  DV-AVI?
I have a 1 TB drive for Video and 1 TB drive for audio set up in a raid (mirror) so really four 1 TB drives.  So storage shouldn't be an issue.   I also have 2 360 gb 10,000 rpm raptor drives setup in a raid 0 (striped) I only save program files and files I am currently editing to.

Old forum discussion, message now gone, but here's the summary
Matt with Grass Valley Canopus in their tech support department stated that the model 110 will suffice for most hobbyist. If a person has a lot of tapes that were played often the tape stretches and the magnetic coding diminishes. If your goal is to encode tapes in good shape buy the 110, if you will be encoding old tapes of poor quality buy the model 300
Both the 110 and 300 are two way devices so you may output back to tape... if you don't need that, look at the model 55
http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc55 One Way Only to Computer
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc110 for good tapes, or
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300 better with OLD tapes
    Or
    ADS Pyro http://www.adstechnologies.com
Capture will be DV AVI Type II with 48KHz 16-bit Audio

  • Advice needed!!! Imac 27"/Canon HV30 capture/FW 800 compatability.

    Greetings.
I have been really intrigued by the new 27" i5/i7 Imacs. Basically getting a computer along with the monitor. I realize the expansion short comings, but until I get little busier (or richer) a Mac Pro along with a new display is sort of out of reach.
Has anyone had a chance to actually capture video with FC from a Canon HV30/40 via FW from camera to the FW 800 port on the Imac? Can it be done? I have always hooked up the FW cable from the camera to a FW 400 port on my G5 and I've had no problems.
I'm assuming there would need to be an adapter that makes FW400 plug into a FW800 port, or maybe it's as simple as anew cable.
My last question: If I have a Lacie 1 TB external connected to the Imac via the FW 800, that leaves nowhere to attach camera for capture.
However, on the back of my Lacie, I have a FW400 port. Can I hook the camera to that port and capture video from the camera that way?
If you can't do that, then it seems the only way to capture video from an HV30 is to connect the camera to the FW800 (if possible at all) capture to the start-up drive, and then move all captured files to the external after capture.
Help, please. I need to do something really soon.
    Thanks.
    Jonathan

There in a nutshell is the exact problem with the imac and final cut. If I were you, I'd take my camera and the drive and hop over to your nearest apple store and try plugging the camera into the drive and the drive into the imac and seeing if you have any problems capturing. Don't forget that canons don't always play nice with other devices on the same bus.
