Cascading a Wireless WRT300N to a BEFSX41....

Have tried connecting the wireless router to the other router many times by following the instructions received from Linksys and changing the IP Address on the wireless router as instructed. Tried both methods without success. Receive a very strong signal from the wireless router but cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. IP address and DNS 1 & 2 fields are entered as provided by the service provider. Have started over many times without success after resetting the wireless router . Three sessions with live chat left me abandoned two times.
Can any one give me any pointers?

First get the main router (wired or wireless) working fine with the modem. Change the Lan ip and disable the DHCP server of the secondary router. Connection should be from Lan to Lan on both the router. Power cycle the network, it should work.

I have a vista machine which finds the connection no problem with no additional passwords, etc. I am now trying to get my laptop to see it. It asks for a wepa passphrase to find the connection. I used WPA2 on the Linksys wireless not wepa.
How do I get connected here? It is an XP laptop.

  • Cascading a wireless WRT600N to a wired BEFSR81 to the Internet

Okay, here is an easy one.
I am trying to daisy chain a new WRT600N wireless router to an older BEFSR81 8-port router.  Here is the setup up.  Cable modem is wired to the WAN jack on the 8-port.  5 computers (Win98 or Win 2000) wired into the common ports on the 8-port.  They all can communicate with the 8-port, with each other and to the Internet.  I have now wired common port 1 of the WRT600N into the cross-over uplink port of the 8-port.  The 8-port uses IP  address 192.168.50.1 (submask 255.255.255.0, starting DHCP IP address 192.168.50.70, 20 user max).  The WRT600N uses IP address 192.168.50.100 (submask 255.255.255.0) with DHCP disabled.
Okay, now here is the interesting part.  I have a new Vista laptop that I want to go wireless through the new WRT600N.  If I wire the laptop directly to a common port of the WRT600N, I can communicate with both routers, all the other compters and the Internet.  However, if I remove the cable and go wireless, I can only communicate with the routers and the other computers.  I can't connect with the Internet.  I have set the wireless for WEP encryption.  I have fiddled with the gateway settings, etc., but no wireless Internet.
I seems to me that if I can get there wired, I should be able to get there wireless if I simply disconnect the cable.  The laptop connects with the WRT600N and with the other local computers, but NOT THE INTERNET.  I am writing this message from the laptop in the wired configuration (port 2 on the WRT600N), so I know this much works.  Any thoughts or help here on configuring the WRT600N or Vista would be appreciated.  There is always the secret step!

I would suggest that you re-load the WRT600N firmware using the tftp.exe program.
The instructions for how to get this program, and how to use it are located at:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3703&p_created=11515...
The instructions are near the end of the post at the above URL.  Look for a section labeled  "Downloading tftp.exe"  and another section labeled "Reloading the Firmware".
Before attempting to use the tftp.exe program, please do the following:
    A)  Power down your entire network.
    B)  Disconnect the WRT600N from all devices.
    C)  Wire one computer (the one with the firmware and tftp.exe program) to a LAN port on the WRT600N
    D)  Power up the WRT600N and your computer.
    E)  Use the tftp.exe program to load the latest firmware.
After the firmware upgrade using tftp.exe, exit the tftp.exe program, power down the router and computer, wait one minute, then proceed to the "reset to factory defaults" using the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router, including the computer.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, go ahead and setup the router manually.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Cascade Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router to a Linksys EZSX16W switch....

I tried to cascade a wireless BEFW11S4 router to a EZSX16W switch but I can't get it to work. When I first connect it goes online for about 1 minute then after that nothing. I loose my internet wan connection. I connected the uplink on my router to the number 1 port on the switch. My modem connection is on the wan port on the router. Plugged everything in and it goes for about 1 minute then I loose connection. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this working....THANKS

No you don't need to change any settings on your router. The First thing which you can check when you connect the Modem to the Linksys Router and then your Computers without using the Switch are you able to go Online and check if you are getting Disconnected or not.
Modem - Router - Computer ..... and check the Internet Connection.
If your Computers are able to go online, Then you need to connect the Ethernet cable from the LAN Port 1 of the Linksys Router to the LAN Port No.1 on the Switch, Then connect your Computer to the LAN Port 2 of the Switch.  Once you are done with these connections.. Then you need Unplug the Power from Switch, Router and Modem.. Wait for 30seconds and then first plug the power to the Modem... Wait till all the lights are Solid then plug the power to the Linksys Router and then to your Switch.
Now check if you are Online from the Computer connected to the Switch.

  • Cascaded Routers: BEFSR81 primary, WRT54GX2 secondary

I have had a Linksys, 8-port ethernet router for about 7 years and it works fine. I recently got a laptop with a Linksys WPC54GS pc-card wireless adapter. I purchased a Linksys WRT54GX2 wireless router for the laptop. I wanted to add (cascade) the wireless router to the ethernet router. I had a lot of trouble getting it to work, so, long story short, I spent a couple hours on the phone with Linksys support and here's what I learned: The proper wiring configuration is: High-speed internet connection connected to the ethernet (primary) router. Wireless (secondary)router connected to the ethernet router using a regular, numbered port on each. Don't use the "uplink" port on the primary router or the "ethernet" port on the wireless router. I have Windows XP on my laptop, so I needed to use WEP security, not WPA. As far as IP addresses for the routers, the subnet number (192.168.x.#, where x is the subnet) had to match. Disable DHCP and NAT on the wireless router. I did the initial configuration of the wireless router with an ethernet cable connected to the laptop. After that(turned off DHCP), getting to the internal configuration page on the wireless router over the ethernet cable required a static IP address with the default gateway set to the IP address of the wireless router. Now that the entire system is up and running, I can get to the wireless router config page wirelessly using a DHCP address, static address not required. Hope all this helps someone, sometime. -J

  • How to reconfigure WRT300N from cable modem to DSL modem

I have moved my wireless WRT300N router from my home in Michigan where it was configured using a cable modem for the internet connection to my Florida home where I use DSL.  I went though the routine of using the install disk to re-set up the modem to use the DSL line and it fails to connect to the internet.  I did this twice, first using my new Vista os computer, and then thinking Vista was a problem, I tried the same procedure using an older XP os machine.  Both gave me the same result getting a message that the router could not connect to the internet.
Any idea what is going on?  The DSL line is connected to the internet otherwise I would not be online right now asking this question.
    Thanks all for your help.
    Jerry

Before you try to use the CD setup disk, you need to reset the router to factory defaults, using the reset button on the back of the router.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
" or "Request timed out." This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.

  • Cascade a router question

I have a 8 port wired Linksys router that works great. I posted here and was instructed how to cascade a wireless router to a wired router. It worked great for a week.
The only way I could get it to work again was do a reset on the router and then cascade it again. They had told me a storm came up that night and the next morning it would not connect. I thought first damage had been done to it but the wired router worked great.
I used 192.168.1.2 for the ip address and changed the others things I was supposed to do. It worked again. Is this normal for it to have to be reset after say a power failure or something. I tried just powering it off and back on again but could never connect. Thanks for the tips and great site. Tom

I have all my network hardware plugged into a tripp-lite ups.  Cost me about $250 but whenever the power goes out, my server, and 2 other desktops shut down nicely instead of just going down.  Another nice thing about this is that my router stays up...and with my laptop I can surf online for hours while others sit in the dark.
it also protects against power surges.  though a power outage shouldn't "reset" your router, a surge could....
you don't need anythign fancy like I have setup, but even a $50 UPs from office depot would be a smart investment.

  • WRT54G Version 3.1 Connection Issues - Help Please

    Good Morning,
We have a WRT54G Version 3.1. Our existing network is wired and functions fine, I am adding the WRT54G for a few wireless clients.
During testing I have connected the wireless to my computer via CAT5 cable to port 1. I have connected another CAT5 cable to the internet port of the router from a known good wall jack.
When I first open the default address 192.168.1.1 and enter the password, all seems well. Due to having servers that hand out IP addresses, I disable the routers DHCP capability.
I enter the following information for example:
    Local IP: 81.0.0.90
    Gateway: 81.0.0.1
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP disabled
    etc.
After changing the the local IP and receiving a confirmation that my changes were saved and I will be going back to the previous page, the page won't display with the address changed to 81.0.0.90 and it is blank.
I release my IP address through cmd, clear my dns cache and reboot the computer. After restart, I am presented with the stock MS address of 169.254.X.X.
I cannot connect to the local IP I established at 81.0.0.90 and nothing appears to work. The only thing I can do is reset the router and start from scratch...again.
Any ideas on what keeps happening and how it can be resolved once and for all?
    Thanks in advance

even if you have two DHCP enabled on both routers in your network, you will not get an IP adress conflict (exception of course if you're cascading two wireless routers).
a LAN port (ethernet router) to WAN port (wireless router) connection can be established allowing you to have both DHCP server enabled on your routers.
by doing the LAN to WAN connection, you will have two networks in a network.. both network won't meet cuz they will have different IP adress... router 1: could be 81.0.0.90, then router 2 could be 81.0.0.91.
if you want your two routers to meet and be in the network together, you just need to follow QUAK's suggestion to assign a static IP adress on your PC. or better yet, you can just connect the router you're disabling the DHCP server with to it's LAN port from a LAN port as well of your DHCP server (router 1). this is a LAN to LAN connection... by doing that, you will be able to open up the interface of your router 2(DHCP disabled) since your PC connected to it will get an IP adress...

  • Dropping on a N signal.

I've bought myslef a Wireless WRT300N and WMP300N to get a good strong signal.
Router is placed downstairs, and reciever is just one room above it. It seems dat my Linksys connection program recieves a good steady signal of 90%.
Still I get drop outs, all the time. When I connect I can use the internet or other programs to run steady for about tien minutes, after that it just drops out and I need to restet my connection.
When I use newsleecher to get some newsarticles, speed gets up to about 600 kb/s, but after two to three minutes, speed drops and the program stops.
Does anyone have some good tips to get my connection more stable. I just phoned to linksys helpdesk for about one hour, te hear that they can't solve my problem.
Kinda **bleep**ty, since I payed well for this setup.
    Thx ia gABBY.

    Gabby,
There are alot of posts on the problem with using the WMP300N adapter. Go to the forum 'wireless adapters'.
I have the N router which I was using with some G notebood adapters , no problem, Recently I purchased the WMP300N to use with my desktop and I was dropping all over the place.
I called them up and it seems this is a common problem. They sent me the beta driver and since I installed that, no problems... I am up and running for 2 days now with no drops .
Go to Live Chat and ask the technician for the Beta Driver. You are not alone.
Hopefully, they make this available soon to all.
    Hope this helps

  • Bridge mode on WAG120N

Hi I have a WAG120N. I wish to use it as a modem only and not as a wireless router.
I have another wireless router I want to use to handle network connectivity.
I want the wag to be set to 10.10.1.1 and I want my router on 10.10.1.2
What bridge mode do I set on my wag? Do I need a crossover cable?

Let me see if I got your preferred setup. You want the modem router set a router ONLY and will be cascading a wireless router to it. In this setup, the DHCP server is the second router, right? This is feasible. Configure internet connection and set the WAG120N to use the preferred address. Disable DHCP server on the modem router. Connect the routers LAN- LAN. Use a regular CAT5 cable to make this connection.

  • Network scenario!!

I have a WRT54G and a WRT54GC wireless routers, I have a D-link USB wireless adapter, 2 wirless notebooks, a HP notebook with an extra NIC card, and a Xbox 360 with an USB wirless adapter.
My plan is to connect the WRT54G router directly to the Roger's cable modem.  I will configure it for WEP encryption, SSID disabled, MAC filtering and port forwardingfor the Xbox360.
Second, my HP dekstop will be in an other room and will have the d-link USB wirless adapter connected to it so it can be part of the network.
My 2 notebooks aren't a big deal as they will connect to the wireless network via their external wireless modems.
This is where I am having problems coming up with a solution.  I want to connect the WRT54GC wireless router to the available NIC in my HP desktop and run be able to run a cable so it will be closer to the room that has my Xbox in it.  The Xbox will not connect to the network right now with the USB adapter that is in it.  I am wondering if I could get  that 2nd router close enough to  it, the USB adapter will pick it up better and connect to the wirelss network.
I am wondeirng what kind of settings I will need to do with the 2nd router to make it communicate with the network.  I was thinking I could turn on ICS on the NIC in the desktop and connect a CAT 5 cable to the Internet port of the 2nd router.
    What will I do??

in such case it is not possible to connect both the routers using the same cable connection ....
Because ... the router needs internet connection fron modem or router ..... using HARDWIRED connection ...

  • WRT300N Router does not working with Intel 4965AGN adapter on Wireless-N

Hi! I have recently bought the laptop Acer 5920G with Intel 4965AGN network adapter and Windows Vista. I have read that WRT300N Router is supporting Draft-N standard, so I purchased it. The router is working fine on Wireless-G 54Mbps (firmware - 2.00.17), but not on Wireless-N. I tried to enter the following settings: ssid - any non-linksys name;  radio band - wide; n-channel - 9; standard channel - 11; beacon interval - 50; Fragmentation threshold - 2306; RTS threshold - 2307, but nothing has happened, connection still remains 54Mbps. How should I configure the router and network adapter to get Wireless-N?

okay... try reflashing/upgrading the firmware on the router, after reflashing the firmware on the router, reset it back to default settings and reconfigure it according to ISP settings...edit the wireless settings again, make sure that "wireless mode" should be mixed...
on the vista computer, click on start >> control panel >> network & sharing center >> manage wireless network and try removing existing wireless networks from profile and manually add wireless n/w profile according to wireless settings of the router...check whether it makes any difference or not and let me know.
