Catalog creating software?

Ok, I am looking for a software product that does a few things. 1) It MUST be compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8. 2) It will allow me to create a catalog for retail merchandise in a relatively 'user friendly' manner. 3) It needs to be able to be saved as an e-file, so that it can be sent to clients in an electronic format and maintain the catalog formatting regardless if they are using a mac or a pc. The only example of this I can think of is a pdf file where everyone uses the reader to open things and the formatting stays the same. 4) it must also be able to be sent out to a print shop to be able to communicate with the printers computers without formatting issues so that a hard copy can be generated. And Lastly, 5) we are a very small home-based business so this needs to be as cost effective as possible.
So this is your mission, should you choose to accept it.....no, just kidding. But any help or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch, Jenny

honestly: Pay a graphic designer to do it for you. If its done wrong it can cost you a LOT more money.
You could make a PDF with InDesign that would satisfy all of your requirements but number 2. Grant is 100% correct on this one.
If you fill in more details, and the details instill confidence in your abilities in a forum full of print and documentation pros (e.g. "Our catalog will be made by hand, with no automation to link to Excel, because we only have twenty products, and have experience with making print brochures in PageMaker some years back") then maybe we might be able to give you some more pointers.
Dani's recco of EasyCatalog is a good one. I really liked my experience with InData from Em Software, but it wasn't easy. I never used EasyCatalog myself, but I helped out on a translation project and got to look over the the shoulder of a designer that used it, and it's well-named. If you're already the kind of person who is good at pushing data-driven publishing projects around, but dislike writing bits of code to duct-tape stuff together, then EasyCatalog is what you're looking for.
If you're not that person, then you want to hire the person that is.

SCCM 2012 R2 -CU3 fails at 'Create Software Update Catalog'

I am trying to upgrade SCCM 2012 R2 CU1 to CU3 (skipping CU2) but the upgrade fails in the middle with following message in the log
Task 'Create Software Update Catalog' completed, state is 'failed' ExceptionText: Error: Setup detected an unexpected problem during installation. Error message: A valid file name is required.
Parameter name: fileName
I have checked following article but it does not fixed mine.

Already uninstalled CU3 and reinstalled it with no luck so I was wondering anyone has any ideas as what might be causing it?

** RESOLVED **
After attempting several times and uninstalling when it failed, finally it got installed successfully.
Since I was skipping CU2 so I thought to install that as well before installing CU3. However, the CU2 also failed at Admin Console update. Re started installing CU3 but this time I choose not to create deployment packages for client, server and console.
Not sure if that fixed it or CU2 but I am glad its over now. After installing CU3 successfully, ran the installer again to create all required deployment packages for console, client and server.
All looks good now.

Steps to create software component,
1. Goto SLD --> Software catalog
2.select new product
3.Fill the Vendor, Name , version and choose create
4.now go back to the SLD main page and then choose software type as sofware component
5. select new component and in the next page select your product which you have created in the previous step
6.then give your vendor, name and version and choose create
7. now the sofware component is created, you can import the same in you integration repository for your scenario

Problems creating software components in SLD

Hi,
I am using NW2004s SP06.
While configuring NWDI, I was defining Product and Software components in the SLD.
1) I am unable to create products for SAP Systems in the catalog. Whenever I select a new product the message always says new product for non-SAP system.
2) I am unable to create software components for products for non SAP systems. Whenever I try adding new software components I get an error on the production state
Value not allowed by VALUEMAP for property SAP_SoftwareComponent.ProductionState:Released
This is the same error when I choose all the listed Production states: (Eg: Planned, Developed etc)
Please help

Is anyone else trying to use Edge Animation to create software simulations?

We're in the process of evaluating Edge Animate to create software simulations. We want to use it because it has many great HTML5 functions. We're also evaluating Captivate7 - which also has an HTML5 option - but it lacks some of the functionality we're looking for. Like the ability to show users a 'hint' when they hover their cursor over an object. Why that functionality isn't there already - I still can't figure out. It would be create if Adobe could take some of the functionality in Edge Animate and incorporate it into Captivate! It would make an awesome product!
If you're attempted or were successful creating a software simulation using Edge Animate - I would be interested in hearing how you accomplished it. Also looking for some best practices around this idea.
I think Edge Animate would be an amazing product for software simulation if it incorporates a few enhancements.
In the timeline - allow the user to nest things. The timeline can get unwieldy quickly. Would be nice to be able to nest items and then twirl the nested items to hid them - like in AE.
Enable AE functionality with the ability to play one Edge Animate piece inside another.
Provide the ability to add video with transparent backgrounds. We wanted to have someone walk on screen and appear as if they were walking on the software. Can't do it in Edge Animate!
If you have any other ideas or suggestions for creating software simulations in Edge Animate - would be great to hear from the community

We're looking at ways to make the timeline more flexible as far as nesting and/or hiding elements, so hopefully these types of improvements will come as Animate continues to grow. Just wanted to quickly pop in to address a few of your bullet points - hopefully, other Animate users can answer regarding whether they use Animate for software simulation.
Your first two points (I think) can be at least somewhat addressed by using symbols. Each symbol has its own timeline which can contain many elements, but it will appear as a single element in the main (Stage) timeline.
Regarding video, there's currently only one HTML5 browser that natively supports video with alpha transparency: Chrome, using video encoded to the webm format. See here for more info: Alpha transparency in Chrome video - HTML5Rocks Updates
Once other browsers start incorporating native support for video with transparency, this could be pretty cool. But as of now, native browser support is still quite limited.

Using logical operators when creating software groups

Is there a way to use simple logical operators when using filters for creating software groups?
An example of what I want to do is to select all updates for the past month - but not include Definition Updates for instance. So all update classifications but NOT definition updates.

The '-' trick only works for ADRs to my knowledge.
For searching within the console, anytime you add criteria for the same attribute, it always adds it with an OR. This is a known design shortfall.
For your question specifically though, you need to reverse your thinking and instead of being exclusive, think inclusively. Thus, you can add an attribute multiple times to the search criteria by selecting and adding it multiple times -- once for each
classification that's not definition updates. Then, save the search as pointed out by Torsten.

Unable to create software component version

Hello All,
I am unable to create software components for products for non SAP systems. Whenever I try adding new software components I get an error on the production state

I had the same problem reg. SLD used in my SAP XI system (a NetWeaver component).
You should upgrade your Java part of the application to Service Pack-SP (at least) 5. I found more information in the SAP Marketplace:

Create software update group that only contains post service pack hotfixes?

I'm creating software update groups for server and workstation OS. Is there a way to exclude pre-service pack updates from an update group (or even the search itself)? Example: all of our machines already have Windows 7 SP1 installed, therefore
I don't need to include any updates that were included in SP1. I know only required updates will be installed, but I'd rather not waste disk space downloading ones I don't need. Thx

The console shows you how many devices in your hierarchy require a given update. If you don't want to see updates that are not required by any devices, select Add Criteria > Required > Greater or Equal to 1 > Search. This assumes that the Software
Updates Evaluation cycle is run on the devices...
If you apply SP1 to all devices, the individual updates (pre-SP1), should not be required by the devices (they may even become superseded by SP1 - depends)... The count of Required in the console should be 0...
I know this is not the exact answer you're looking for, but it's easy...

If you are serious about developing software for Apple which includes both OS X on the Mac and iOS on mobile devices, you are going to have to get a Mac to do it on. You can't develop for Apple on a Windows machine.

Creating software music in Soundtrack Pro..."musical typing"

Hello, all-
I just started using Final Cut Studio yesterday for a movie that I'm making with some friends. I'm doing the musical score, so I'm working a lot with Soundtrack pro. I just switched from using Garage Band, so it's a totally different world! =) In Gband, I'm used to creating software music...as in, typing in the notes, or "musical typing." I haven't found a way to do that in Soundtrack...is there a way? I know there are the loops, but I haven't figured out how to create my own music without recording a real instrument.
So basically, my question is, can you create a software instrument and do "musical typing" in Soundtrack?

Nope, simply put, STP is audio rec. only, no MIDI[software inst.] Look up MIDI in the STP reference guide to see what you can do.
There is a way of syncing with MIDI inst.-you may be able to import individual recorded tracks this way from GB, by using an option that should appear as an output in GB called Soundtrack Pro Sync Source when both programs are running. You can automate controls over STP this way; typing notes will likely only yield one source of output.
When you play back the notes and have STP running a multi-trk file with a track rec. enabled then STP will record the real time playback on the software inst. track. That's how you can record MIDI data in STP, but i can't say for sure GB can do that...

Catalog Publishing Software Recommendations Anyone :)

Hello,
I would love to get some catalog publishing software recommendations besides Easy Catalog (currently using Easy Catalog and looking to get away from it) that are user friendly with InDesign?
We are looking to streamline our process and hopefully use a datapull that we produce into an excel document. Our catalogs are generally printed and anywhere from 80-130 pages each.

I have not seen any custom demonstrations by them, im always learing of having to "sign up" for things online in order to get demonstrations, ive been bombarded with tons of junk email before by doing this. Since you have used this program can you tell me if i can have my data pulled from an excel document in order to use this program? Basically our information is entered into a specific program that was written for our business. In the past we have had to extract data from this program, run it through yet another program and then convert it to excel document... How can I create software start and stop trigger in LabView using 6023E series DAQ card? I don't want to use the external trigger.

I am using 6023E DAQ card to collect the signals, such as AE, Force, Torque from the machine. I want to collect only some part of signal for example between start triger and stop trigger. I'd like to know how I can creat those triggers in LabView from one of the channels that I am acquiring at the same time. I found one or two library file that is only for start trigger. I know that this is availabe in some of DIAdem functions. Please let me know if you have done some example for this requirement.

If you are wanting to create a software trigger based on an analog input voltage in LabVIEW, there are several options. One suggestion would be to compare the voltage values from one input channel to a number within a loop. If the input voltage crosses that threshold (is greater than the number), have a case statement that will acquire data from the other channels. This would simulate a software start trigger in LabVIEW.

There are many ways you can achieve this.
Either by Creating a SharePoint list and then modify it using InfoPath to get all your required fields added
or
Use InfoPath application and select any template or blank form template to get all your required fields added and then publish it to SharePoint site
For the second step you can create an OOTB workflow which can send email to view an approve items using Approval workflow feature
For the advance notification you can use SPD workflows as well.

Creating Software Update Packages - Best Practice?

I am setting up our SCCM 2012 R2 environment to begin using it for Windows Updates, however I'm not sure 100% the best method of setting it up.
Currently my plan is to break out the deployment packages by OS, but I read\told that I should avoid creating to many dynamic deployment packages, as every time it changes all the computers will re-scan that package. So What I want to do is create
various packages for OS and years, so I would have a package that contains all updates for Windows 7, older then January 31, 2013 (assuming the package doesn't have 1000+ updates), and are not superseded\Expired. Then I would create Packages for the 2014
monthly updates each month, then at the end 2014, combine them all in 1 package, and restart the process for 2015. Is this a sound plan or is there a better course of action?
If this the best practice method, is there any way to automatically create these packages? I tried the Automatic Deployment Rules, but I can not set a Year of release, only the a time frame of the release,(older then 9 Months), unless I am missing
something. The only way I can see doing this is going into All Software Updates, and filtering on my requirements, and then manually creating the package, but this would less desirable, as after each year I would like to remove the superseded and expired
without having to recreate the package.

First, please learn what the different objects are -- not trying to be rude, just stating that if you don't do this, you will have fundamental issues. Packages are effectively meaningless when it comes to deploying updates. Packages are simply a way of grouping
the binary files so they can be distributed to DPs and in-turn made available to clients. The package an update is in is irrelevant. Also, you do not "deploy" update packages and packages are not scanned by clients. The terminology is very important because
there are implications that go along with it).
What you are actually talking about above are software update groups. These are separate and distinct objects from update packages. Software Update groups group updates (not the update binaries) into logical groups that can be in-turn deployed or used for
compliance reporting.
Thus, you have two different containers that you need to be concerned about, update packages and update groups. As mentioned, the update package an update is in is pretty meaningless as long as the update is in a package that is also available to the clients
that need it. Thus, the best way (IMO) to organize packages is by calendar period. Yearly or semi-annually usually works well. This is done more less to avoid putting all the updates into a single package that could get corrupted or will be difficult to deploy
to new DPs.
As for update groups, IMO, the best way is to create a new group every month for each class of products. This typically equates to one for servers, one for workstations, and one for Office every month. Then at the end of every year (or some other timeframe),
rolling these monthly updates into a larger update group. Keep in mind that a single update group can have no more than 1,000 updates in it though. (There is no explicit limit on packages at all except see my comments above about not wanting one huge package
for all updates.)
Initially populating packages (like 2009, 2010, 2011, etc) is a manual process as is populating the update groups. From then on, you can use an ADR (or really three: one for workstations, one for servers, and one for Office) that runs every month, scans
for updates released in the past month, and creates a new update group.
Depending upon your update process, you may have to go back and add additional deployments to each update group also, but that won't take too long. Also, always QC your update groups created by an ADR. You don't want IE11 slipping through if it will break
your main LOB application.
