CD Door stays open/Discs don't mount

Hi all-
Not sure if I need to replace my CDRW burner. When I put a disc in the tray, the tray closes for a couple of minutes, then reopens. Any disc I mount doesn't appear on the desktop.
In iTunes, it searches for recordable media, but fails.
Just before this happened, I had dragged a playlist from iTunes 6.05 into the Toast 5.2.1 window to see if I could burn a CD this way, so I am wondering if this is the problem somehow.
Remedies I have tried-
1. Boot into safe mode
2. Zapping PRAM (4 times)
3.Restarting in firmware window (Apple-Opt-O-F) to reset nvram, defaults & all.
4. Apple service call-they took me through steps 1 & 2
If I need to replace this burner internally (which I prefer to do) can anyone recommend which model and where I can get instructions. I'll need to install Tiger after this also, and I already had the CD version (5 discs) ready to go.
I don't need DVD capability, I just need to burn music and picture discs. I hope there is an inexpensive fix.
The unit shows up in Sys prefs. It's a Sony CRX155E, ATA device type atapi, disc burning fully supported.
Can anyone tell me how to keep the door closed? It just stays open now.
Thanks-
Ray

Hi
if you do need to replace it, installation instructions including a QuickTime movie can be found here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75314
Removing the old burner just involves undoing 4 screws to remove the drive carrier from the computer and a further 4 screws to remove the drive from the carrier. You also just need to unplug the ribbon and power cable, the power cable can be a tight fit so you may need to gently waggle it or pry it off (but don't pull directly on the cable).
The Pioneer DVR-111D is a popular choice. It does burn DVDs as well as CDs but isn't too expensive ($30-$40). Under Tiger it should just work as is, no additional software needed. I recently installed one and haven't had any problems with it.
I hope this helps.

• Flash drive/discs don't mount

I have a flash drive and three flash discs that mount in OSX on an iBook, but not on a Titanium with OS9. System Profiler shows them all plugged into the USB port, but they do not appear on the desktop. File Sharing and Foreign File Access are enabled. I've tried several different things but cannot get them to mount. They are all supposed to be OSX and OS9 compatible. Any thoughts, please?

In some cases there is a conflict with Apple's USB
Extensions The major conflict I found is named
something like- USB Mass Storage ...
You see from Mac OS 9.1 and above (to 9.2.2) all the
USB Mass Storage stuff was to be built into the MAC
OS. However the installer seems to add that Extension
anyway. I trashed mine, as you can tell, I already
forgot the full name of the Extension. For yourself I
recomend in pulling it out of the Extensions (folder)
and reboot your computer. Otherwise post back if you
were not successful.
It is USB Mass Storage, and the cards don't seem to work with or without it. They do show up in ASP, though; they just don't mount.
They not require (or have) drivers.
I'm flummoxed.

• Why does the print cue window stay open even after job is done?

In Tiger, and every other version of OSX I have any recollection of using, the printer window opens to display what's in the cue when you select to print something. Once printing is done, this cue closes. Since installing Leopard, everytime we print from our iMac, MacBook or MBP, the print cue window stays open indefinitely after the job is done, requiring a manual closing of the window. I can't for the life of me fathom what benefit this brings or who would want this. Is this part of Leopard or a problem with our install? Something I can turn off?

If you control-click (or right click) on the open printer queue in the Dock you can choose to have it auto close once the spool file is sent.
As to why this is necessary in Leopard, well I haven't seen a good enough answer to date...

• Saving window don't stay opened

Since I updated all the drivers on my laptop, the saving window where I am supposed to choose the format (jpg, gif, etc.) of copies of my file don't stay opened long enough for me to save in another format than PS. How to fix it?

The OS save dialog (the one you can't keep open) should only close when you hit the save button, or press enter or return to commit the save).
My guess is that something on your OS is interferring with the OS save dialog.

• Serious problems in Illustrator CC with OSX Mavericks: Open, Place and Save windows don't stay open

I just upgraded to OSX Mavericks. After that, Illustrator started acting up. When I try to save or open a file, or place an image, the command window opens just for a second or two then closes right away. Even the Save shortcut doesn't work. I've saved the file a few times using Command-S, when I was closing it I got a warning that I had to save it. Of course, I couldn't save it using Save As or Save commands because their windows wouldn't stay open, so I had to just close it. When I opened it again, it was an older version; Illustrator just ignored my last two or three saves.
I tried restarting the computer and relaunching Illustrator, nothing worked. The problem was worse when I have InDesign open too. But just quitting InDesign didn’t always work. This morning, I had to quit and relaunch both InDesign and Illustrator a few times before the problem temporarily disappeared.
I think it might also be worth mentioning that I use Apple Trackpad, and my computer is brand new.
Is anyone else having similar problems? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. But I always have the List View.
One lame thing worked though. I would hit the command short cut and keep hitting it for a few times. This forces the command window to stay open, and it actually helps getting ridding of the problem temporarily.
I also had a similar but nastier problem in Acrobat. I tried to save a Photoshop PDF file in Acrobat, the Save As window opened and closed right away. Then all the command menus went gray; non of the commands was available including Quit. The only option I had was to force quit Acrobat. However, I didn't have this problem when handling native Acrobat files. The good news is that my lame solution worked.

• Office 365: dropdown menus don't stay open + theme problem

Hello
I recently encountered some problems that make the Office 365 unusable. Could you help me figure it out?
Problems:
These problems appear in every office program: word, excel, power point...
Windows are in some very old 98 looking theme
Office programs appear to be in a window within a window (Image 2)
Dropdown menus in ribbon and in settings stay open less than a second - makes them unusable
Situation:
Office worked well for 2 months, then problems started
Graphic drivers are up to date
Windows is up to date
All the other programs work normally
No recent hardware changes
Comodo Internet Security installed recently
Automatic updates enabled for pretty much everything
When reinstalling, even the installation windows goes to 98 theme
My actions:
Selected default theme from control panel, no effect
Restarted, no effect
Reinstalled Office (Image 1), no effect
Disabled Comodo Internet Security, no effect
Tried running in safe mode, no effect
My setup:
Acer R7-572
Windows 8.1 Pro N
Office 365
I would post some screenshots, but seems that it is not allowed for me.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi,
Seems you've already tried lots of steps, including a complete reinstallation of Office, but to no avail. As per your description above, I'm thinking it might be something on Windows side that is interfering with Office product.
Have you ever tried to disable the hardware graphics acceleration in Office? Sometimes a recent updated video driver might be incompatible with Office. Please have a try and see if it helps:
Open any Office 2013 component, for example Word 2013, then go to FILE>Options>Advanced
Tick the option of "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" under the section
Display
If issue persists after the steps above, I would suggest we try to perform a clean boot in Windows and then verify result. This will help to determine whether any program conflict is causing the issue:

Hope this helps.

• DVD & Blu Ray Burner Drive Trays Do Not Stay Open When Media is in the Drive

I have a problem with both Windows 8/8.1 and the Windows 10 Technical Preview (there is no issue when I run Windows 7).
I have 2 optical drives: 1) DVD Burner and 2) Blu Ray Burner (I just got the second drive a few weeks ago). They are attached to the secondary SATA Chip (see below for specifics).
The problem I'm having is that when I eject media from either drive, the drive does not stay open, but rather immediately closes. Before I got the Blu Ray Burner, I had this problem with just the single DVD Burner by itself. I was hoping when I installed
Windows 10 Technical Preview that this problem would not be present, but it is present in that O/S as well.
This problem will repeat continuously if I attempt to use the eject button and so I either have to grab the disc while the tray is moving, or if I press the eject button again on the drive at the right time, I can get it to re-open and not close (this
is tricky to get the button timing right as it seems like it has to be done close to when the drive tray is fully extended when it starts retracting). It usually takes me 5 to 10 button presses to get it to stay open. Sometimes it will stay open for about
0.5 to 1s before it closes again, but most of the times it just immediately closes. I also have the same problem if I use the software eject feature by right clicking on the drive and choosing eject.
Of course, the expected behavior is that pressing the eject button should open the tray, but not close it immediately allowing you to remove the disc.
Here is some background information about my system and how the drives are connected:
1. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-ED3P Revision 1.0 LGA 775
2. Interface (for both drives): Gigabyte SATA II Chip - 2 x SATA 3 GB/s connectors (GSATA2_0, GSATA2_1) supporting up to 2 SATA 3 GB/s devices
3. Memory: 8 GB (4 x 2 GB)
It should be noted that I tri-boot between Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 Technical Preview and that this issue is not present in Windows 7, but has always been there in Windows 8/8.1 and now it is present in 10TP as well.
I've had this system for just over 6 years now and it is still going strong. It should be noted that I have both drives on the secondary SATA chip (as identified above), which is meant to be used with removable SATA devices.
Since the problem exhibits itself in both Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP, a reinstall of the O/S will have no affect on this problem and so this appears to be some other issue that is consistent between Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP.
I'd appreciate your support in looking at this issue - thanks!

P.S. I also submitted this feedback through the Insider Program.

Hey Zagayer,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
As you now have two optical drives in your Mac Pro, you need to be able to choose which drive to eject.  That is built into the system.  You just hold the Option key while tapping eject for the 2nd drive.
OS X Mountain Lion: Eject a disk
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10613
If your computer has two optical drives, hold down Option-Media Eject or Option-F12 to eject a disc from the second drive.

• Bottom door only opens part way

Just installed Pioneer DVR 118LBK in bottom slot (2nd drive). Drive works OK but door only opens part way, thus blocking the tray from coming out. You can hear the tray trying to open. If hold door down, after opened part way, then tray will open OK, after telling it to close and then open again (Option:Eject keys). Removed the optical drive carrier and can move door down with ease. Does not appear to be hanging. Can't see any interference. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

About the only other thing to do is take the drives out again, set them side by side and see if there is a difference in the height of the tray, height of the mounting screw holes, etc...
Could just be a bad drive. I just installed a pair of 117D's, had no issues. Don't know if they changed a height or mounting point on the 118D. They may wind up screwing a lot of users up! I'm sure there is some sort of spec they have to follow for stuff like that however.

• TS1545 I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbo

I have downloaded 10.5.8 combo several times and cannot get it to install because the disc won't mount or the installation gets hung up after restart. My current os is 10.5.1, and I am trying to upgrade to snow leopard. This is on a dual core macbook pro.

You don't need to update to Leopard 10.5.8 unless you want to keep Leopard. Upgrading to Snow Leopard requires that your purchase the retail install disk.
The following covers Leopard:
Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

Hello,
After I have receipted a production order into stock the production order stays open - should this not close the production order?  Is the only way of closing it done by going into the order itself and changing the status to closed?

Hi Kate,
It has to be closed manually and only then will the final journal entry be created in case of variance etc.

• Mail app won't stay open and keeps crashing

I use iPhone 7.1. Every time I open my Mail app, it crashes. I don't know why.
I have maybe 700,000 unread emails, fourteen different email accounts (8 Gmails, 2 iClouds, 2 Gmx's, and 2 AOLs, all of which are linked together through my Mail app), over 16,000 photos, and 0 bytes of free space left on my phone.
I've had my phone since 23 May 2013.
I bought it off Amazon for $161.
How can I get my Mail app to work again? Whenever I open the Mail app, it stays open for about 60 seconds, then a black screen appears, and the Mail app crashes.

Hi don290022,
If you are having issues with your iPhone's Mail application becoming unresponsive, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

I'm having the same problem, but can't execute any Safari menu options because it doesn't stay open long enough. Can't even Reset Safari.
Installed 5.0 and it won't open. Continually get the "Reopen" window that sends a a report to Apple. The usual Safari window never gets beyond the URL line before it destructs. I backed up to ver 4.0.5 and get essentially the same result. It does however, try to populate the page, but stays in "Loading" mode for up to a minute or more and then disappears under the "Reopen" error window. I've done the Repair Permissions step with no improvement. Whatever ver 5.0 brought with it has poisoned all previous versions also.
