Change layer's order   InDesign CS4 js

Hi, I need to move layer below another layer and what I tried doesn't work:
myDoc.layers.item("INSTRUCTIONS (TURN OFF)").move (locationOptions.AFTER(myDoc.layers.item ("Die")));
Thank you for your help.
Yulia

You seem to have the syntax wrong:
myDoc.layers.item("INSTRUCTIONS (TURN OFF)").
move(locationOptions.AFTER(myDoc.layers.item("Die")));
locationOptions.AFTER is a constant, it is not a parametrized function. I don't have the syntax of the move() method in front of me [gasp!...], but I believe it it takes two parameters ,the locationOption and the destination [maybe the other order], so it should be:
move(locationOptions.AFTER,myDoc.layers.item("Die"))
or somesuch.

  • My Fonts change when opening an InDesign CS4 file with InDesign CS6

I've been experiencing strange behaviour when opening a InDesign CS4 file file with InDesign CS6: the kerning and spacing is all off:
    Original file:
    opened in InDesign CS6:
Is this a conversion error? Is there a setting/pref I've got wrong?

It's more than a year ago since this issue was reported, but at this time I'd had the same problem when opening a CS4 document in CS6/CC.
I was amazed that a header, placed in capitals, looked different in CS6/CC. But at last, after several tests, i've came to the conclusion that "forced" capitals behaving different than "real" capitals. In others words: when you forcing text to capitals the kerning would be different in CS6/CC. When you place text in real capitals (Shift + text) the kerning is the same as in both InDesign versions.
    Text in CS4:
As you can see: in CS4 there's no difference between real capitals en forced capitals.
Below the results when opening the CS4 file in CS6/CC:
I'm not sure if there are still people struggling with this problem, but hopefully was is this helpful.

  • Change Page info in InDesign CS4

Typically the page information is appeared at the bottom of every pdf pages while exporting from InDesign CS2-CS4 or PS through PDF. I want the same to be appeared at the top of the PDF page while converting PS through PDF or Exporting PDF from ID. Please guide us to change the same.

You MIGHT be able to do it using a custom marks file (see http://indesignsecrets.com/downloads/mrk.pdf), but I'm not sure it's a good idea because there's a risk of encraochement into the bleed or even the page area.

  • Is there a script for changing layer names in ID CS4?

I have multiple documents with an average of 20 layers in each. Each of the layers is named for the expiration date of the coupon in the ads. When a new order comes in I retrieve the previous files and change the dates via scripts and the Find/Change option. I have looked but cannot find a way to rename the dates in the layers as well.
Does anyone know of a script for this?
    Thanks in advance!

E-mail, eh? You're missing out a lot of fun stuff, as there is
    - editing your own posts
    - using bold and italics to highlight important stuff
    - finally being able to shout (some posters think it's necessary to use a large bold font to make their post stand out in the crowd. They are correct, it does. In the Bad way.)
    - inserting images

  • Change layer content in Photoshop CS4

    Where it is!?
I search and I search but I don't find it.
    Someone can help me?

    >And why there is still no dithering option for layer effects?
I'm not sure what relevance this would have for dynamically created effects. By all means, those effects are calculated at the native document bit depth with correct blending, so what would be the point of artificially introducing another level of dithering? This really only has relevance for final rasterization, so I don#t see a requirement for this. If you do:

    >Dear ADOBE, check your quality inspection process.
They do. You just have to understand that software development isn't a wishing well where everyone gets his favorite feature. if a feature does not benefit a majority of users or is not requested by a large number of them, then you certainly can imagine that this ends up being very low on the popularity list. and, specific to the matter at hand: As J. Nack probably would put it, you sometimes have to let go of legacy stuff to make room for a better, more generalized implementation in the future, even if it means that in a particular version the feature goes completely defunct and is "skipped".

  • InDesign CS4 or CS5?

For work, I use a PC and currently have the CS4 Web version which does not include InDesign. I need input on ordering InDesign CS4 vs CS5.
We are now looking to buy InDesign and was wondering if I should stick with CS4 since that is the version of the other programs I have or if I should go ahead and get CS5 for InDesign since it is the newest version.
Will there be any errors between the two versions...working with Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS5? If so, what types of errors will there be? I'd like to make a pretty quick decision so any input you can give, I'd really appreciate!
    Thanks!!

Despite Scott's usual cynicism , buying the full version of InDesign will cost you more than upgrading your CS4 Web suite to CS5 Design Premium.
    Standalone InDesign CS5 is $670
Design Premium upgrade (Windows) is $580 at Amazon: http://amzn.to/bNBkmF. Mac: http://amzn.to/a8NT7A
I have an article on my website on why I think Design Premium is the best choice: http://www.theindesignguy.com/purchase-advice.shtml
    Hope that helps,

Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by pressing command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift while starting Photoshop until the appropriate dialog appears after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)

  • Can I change layer order in PDF?

Acrobat 9 pro: I'm doing a complicated map with layers in PDF format. I found a merge command to merge layers, which is cool. But better option for me is to change layer order, and possibly create new folders within PDF. Is this possible with Acrobat 9 pro?

You can't, but "sub level layers" don't exist in Acrobat. OCGs exist in a single stack, though their NAMES can be grouped in the sidebar panel to make it appear they're in multiple levels. InDesign can create groups like that, Illustrator cannot, and Acrobat can't create them via the UI - however the names in the sidebar are NOT required to match the layer stack in the file, either in order or structure. You can use JavaScript to build the OCGorder array, including any sub-levels you want, and store it in the file.
See the Acrobat JavaScript documentation on the setOCGOrder() function for help and a simple example of populating the array. Groups are created by putting an array within an array, just like any other tree of data.

  • InDesign button changes layer visibility?

    Hi all,
I'm in InDesign CS4. I want to produce an 8-page PDF online publication that contains a tutorial about InDesign (what else?!)
Also, imagine a JavaScript Button object on the bottom of each page that, when clicked, shows a layer of graphics for Windows screenshots, and when clicked again, shows a layer of Mac OS X screenshots.
So the text stays the same, but the button would change between accompanying Mac or Windows screenshots. How cool would that be?!
I see in the button panel, that I can choose from things like close, exit, goto anchor, next page, previous page, URL, movie, sound, view zoom...
But can the button be made to hide or show a layer of graphics in the PDF (assuming an Acrobat version at least v6 or newer).
Does that have to be done in Acrobat Pro? Can it be done at all?
    Mike Witherell in Maryland

    Mike,
Layer visibility changes can only be done within Acrobat.
Show/Hide fields can be done within ID.
Yes, if you screw up a button in ID, you can change it in InDesign, but I warn you, the interface for buttons in Acrobat is much different than ID and even the most simple button action becomes very complicated in Acrobat.

  • InDesign CS4: File names change to string of numbers

Occasionally, one of our users will save an InDesign CS4 file, only to have the file name change.  For example, a file originally named "#kwn25501.bcbsNM.indd" was saved as "#kwn25501.bc157-1223857848."
If the user is not aware that this has happened, things can go horribly, terribly wrong in our production environment. The "numbered" file may be missing key elements, or be somehow be corrupt in some fashion. In one case, this led us to having to reprint a job because the "numbered" file was missing a photo; somehow, that file was used (and perhaps renamed after the fact) to create the final output.
We use Macs running InDesign CS4 6.0.5. Some of our Macs are running Tiger 10.4.11, while others are running Leopard 10.5.8. The problem seems to related to the Leopard machines, although that is not 100 percent certain at this point. All of these Macs are bound to Active Directory and save files to a Windows 2003 server. I know Adobe recommends against working on files over a network, but perhaps there is an explanation for this file renaming aside from network issues.
Any light that can be shed on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Kevin Stauffer

Check to see if maybe your original filename is the problem.
You may need that particular name for a workflow reason, but some of the symbols in the middle of your filename are generally not a good idea. Especially working off of a server, file names should be ONLY alpha-numeric characters, no symbols, no periods (except for the file type) and only underscores or dashes to separate words, no spaces.
The reason is some of those symbols get picked up as machine language and all sorts of bad can happen as a result.

  • InDesign CS4 to reinstall after a system crash. I have bought CS4 some years ago in order to update InDesign CS2. Of course, I have my S/N for CS4 but, during the reinstallation process, I have to give the S/N of InDesign CS2 wich is lost !

I'm unable to reinstall InDesign CS4 which was bought as an update of an old InDesign CS2. I have the serial number of CS4 but I have lost the S/N of CS2 which is required.
    Thanks for help.

    Hi,
Thanks a lot for your answer. In fact, I’ve really registered CS2 in 2002 (october 14th). But I guess that, at this time, my email address was [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> which is no more presently usable.
So, when the installation program of CS4 requires the S/N of CS2 (because my CS4 was an update of a preceding CS2, I’ve an answer (1037-0225-5711-8675-6584-4525) but this answer is not considered as correct by the program.
I guess this change of mail adress is the reason why I don’t find, on my personal file on Adobe, any information about Indesign CS4 (S/N : 1037-0005-3808-1893-0944-6511) nor PhotoShop CS5 (S/N : 1330-0000-7535-1483-5980-1567).
    Thanks

  • Urgent - help with Text direction in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
I use InDesign CS4 on Windows 7. It's a standard version (without options for right-to-left languages).
Whenever I make a new text frame, it seems to have a right-to-left "logic" of the text. The text types left to right, but the period in the end would go all the way right.
It also mixes up tabs. It looks like this:
    Instead of:
Usually I get around it by pasting another correctly formatted text-frame or text, and it works.
Now I'm trying to create a new document with master frame (in order to be able to easily change the layout successively of a many-paged document), where I need to insert existing (formatted) text. But this text take this "right to left logic", whether I past the text, or even a whole text frame.
I could find nothing in the character/paragraph options to get rid of this.
I would greatly appreciate if you could help me.
    with respect,
    Jerusalem Nun.

This behaviour is normal. Changing the default property of any style, when no document is open, changes the style for every new document, but not for existing document.
Take a look what is your basic style where all other styles are build up on it, in your case, go to the paragraph style and look what is the basic style which was used.
If the default style was used (it is the one in brackets), you have always a problem. You should not use it in any case.
Because you don't have a ME version of InDesign you can't change direction directly, but you can create a new document with the default settings and the same paragraph (and character, table and cell styles) in a new document without RTL styles. Save this document, no content is required.
Go to the 'infected' document, open the paragraph style panel and in the panel menu take "Load all text styles", select the new document and overwrite with the incoming styles.
If necessary you might repeat it with the Table, Cell, Character and Object Styles, as all of them have some kind of direction settings.
I don't know how good your styles were created, you have to adjust your document. And I would strongly recommend—I repeat—I strongly recommend to work always with styles.

  • Remove back image while exporting to PDF (InDesign CS4)??

    Hi All,
I have two images in my InDesign CS4 file and one image is hiding behind my second image. When I am exporting my InDesign file as Pdf and opening in Acrobat, Acrobat showing bottom image first and then showing my top image.
Is there any way to remove my bottom image which is appearing behind in my top image while exporting to Pdf.
I don't want remove manually because it happening with most of my InDesign file.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks
    Baljeet

I would move bottom image to separate layer and then eventually I would switch it off.
If you don't want to change anything in InDesign you can eliminate the second image in your already generated PDF.
Open your PDF in Acrobat Pro.
Advanced -> Print Production -> PDF Optimizer.
You can leave only "Clean Up" check box marked (eventually Transparency if Acrobat will not allow you to switch it off). All the rest leave unchecked.
This operation will remove hidden image.
Correction: It will not remove the image. It just made the PDF to be displayed much more faster that is why the second image appearance was not noticeable. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Cannot add ruler guides in InDesign CS4. What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying out InDesign CS4 on a trial basis. I have the Web Design CS3 suite and have no problem making ruler guides by clicking and dragging from a ruler. I'm wondering if there is a conflict between CS3 and CS4 products. I can't select the Selection or Direct Selection Tools by clicking on them. They do become active, however, if I use the keyboard shortcuts (V) or (A).  According to the 1-on-1 tutorial, my Selection Tool cursor should change from black to white when the guide snaps to an existing margin. My cursor turns white as soon as a click on the ruler. When I drag, nothing happens. When I release the mouse button, the cursor turns black again. With the Direct Selection Tool, the cursor remains white throughout the entire attempt. Nothing happens in either situation. This is a simple, getting started doc. There is only one layer, I'm in Normal view, and I have created margins and columns that are visible. I can select Baseline and Document grids and they work. Is this a bug or am I missing something?
P.S. I've tried to attach the InDesign file (840 kb), but got the message, "The content type of this attachment is not allowed." Sheesh!

You were right in your original assessment; it was a corrupt installation. There were several other things not functioning as designed. I just came upon the guides problem first. BTW, I found that if I expanded the document to where it covered the entire screen, the guides were visible. Unfortunately, the tool box and menus are covered, so that was a bit inconvenient. Just wanted to say thanks and tip my hat to you and the others who responded by offering help.
One last thing, when I posted my original posting, I tried to attach the InDesign doc file I was working on and got a pop-up window saying that these type of files are not allowed. Am I to understand that you can't post InDesign files on the Adobe forum?

  • InDesign CS4 - Index no longer lists entries

First off, it's been a while since I've posted here! I feel all giddy =)
Second, thanks for taking time to look at this one....
I'm on XP using InDesign CS4. We've created and updated many book files over the years starting with CS1 and have not run into this situation before. I'm hoping someone out there can help shed some light as to why, if not a fix. This particular project is a chapter based book file that was originally made several years earlier using InDesign CS1. There are 11 chapters, plus Table of Contents, Index, and technical matter up front. Since the original production, information has changed so we have set out to make an update.
    Updates included:
    - Figure edits/addition (all externally linked to .AI files)
    - Layout changes (i.e., page shifts due to additional graphics, some text content added, some removed, but nothing heavy)
    - Conversion from CS1 to CS4
    - Chapter Title updates (we are not using any scripts that name internal content based on file name)
    - Chapter sequence has changed so that old Chapter 5 is now new Chapter 1 and all following chapters shifted up by one. This literally changed all file names of the individual InD chapter files used to comprise the book document.
    OK!
Old Chapter 5 is now new Chapter 1 and required reinsertion into the book document. This was the same for most of the other chapters as well. Upon all updates, the page numbering, sequences, etc., all checked out. I updated the ToC withgout issue. I then attempted to update the Index. This is when I noticed that the "Update Index" option was greyed out (Windows/Type & Tables/Index Shift+F8). Odd, but Ok, so I tried to generate a new index. No luck there either as it only created a empty text field with the title "Index" but with no entries. I then checked the Index Preview list and noticed that all but perhaps 5% of my entries were missing.
So this is where I am. Yes, content was edited, but not to the extent that would have deleted so many indexed entries throughout the book. Has anyone had experience with index errors during conversion from CS1 to a newer version? Or perhaps by renaming and reinserting chapter files into the master book document? I always assumed that the Index entries were held within the chapter file they were created in, until running the book-based Index generation. Perhaps I'm wrong. Could renaming/reimporting chapters have wiped my entries?
I do have the old Index.ind file with all old entries as well as several prints for reference should I need to comb the ENTIRE book replacing each Index entry. I hope that is not my only option! I hope hoping that one of you might offer some sound advice that I'm overlooking here before I head down that road. Please help me, Obi-won. You're my only hope. Any takers?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. It's much appreciated!

    - Noel.
Please forgive my weird sense of humor, but, it looks like you've found a perfect way to delete 95% of your index markers in a book.
Seriously, I'm not certain how this could happen, but I do have a couple of ideas on how to troubleshoot that I learned from some years as a trainer and tech-support guy.
    * Go back to the beginning of your process. Open a copy of an old file in CS1, if you still have it, and if it runs on a workstation that's compatible with it. Generate an index; the original index markers should work. If you don't have CS1, open a copy in whatever release you used to convert your old files, and generate an index. Compare the two indexes, if you have been able to make one for the file with CS1. If no CS1, compare the index entries in the newer version's index with the complete CS1 index. If any original-index entries from the test file aren't present in the newer-version index, here's where things went bad. If nothing's lost, this likely isn't the trouble spot.
What could go bad here? The obvious suspect is the conversion from CS1 to CS4. I can't remember how CS1 worked. If it had an export-to-inx, and you opened that inx file in CS4, and the CS4 file is missing index markers, try opening a copy of the CS1 file directly in CS4. Or, if you opened the CS1 file directly in CS4 and lost index markers, try exporting from CS1 to inx and opening that file. If both methods lose index markers, then this is the problem spot; perhaps someone has a suggestion to fix this problem.
    * If the file conversion doesn't lose index markers, then the book feature is the next place to look. Create a new book in CS4 and add the files in the old order and generate an index. Compare it to the original. No loss, then push it harder, and rearrange the order of documents in the book, and regenerate the index. If this fails, generate a brand-new index. If both index generation approaches fail, then you've found the problem. Perhaps someone can suggest a fix.
    * If all's OK so far, try more stuff, like rearranging chapter files, generating the index.
    * If rearranging files works, test each succeeding step in the process until you find the failure.
    * If you can't find a fix for the problem you uncover as the cause, one possible help in re-marking content for a new CS4 index would be to export the original book file set from CS1 to PDF with index entries set to create hyperlinks. Then work through that PDF index by clicking the page references to find their sources, and create new markers in the new files.
