Change mail service to SMTP only

Our company was running all its mail for two domains internally on Mac OS X Server 10.6. We recently switched over to Google Apps for our email. However, Google's SMTP server is SLOW, so I thought I'd try to use the SMTP server from our 10.6 Server to send outgoing messages instead. I configured one of the client Macs to use the internal server for SMTP and this certainly sped up mail sending. However, of course, only messages sent to external domains were received. Messages sent internally (to email addresses at our two domains) never arrived because the server delivered them to the local mailboxes on the server, and not to the externally hosted Google Apps mailboxes.
Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for configuring our server properly so that all messages including internal messages are delvered properly by our SMTP server?
Cheers!
Greg

Sure - this is simple.
Your server is delivering locally because it believes it is responsible for mail sent to your domain. It isn't. So tell it so.
In Server Admin, change the server to accept mail for 'localhost' only - remove your domain from the list of mail it accepts, and you're set. It will believe that mail for users at your domain are just like any other remote domain and send the mail out.
Off hand, I don't have a Snow Leopard Server handy to check exactly what the field is called in Server Admin, but it shouldn't be hard to spot, or edit the myDestination setting in /etc/postfix/main.cf

  • Set up Mail service for SMTP only.

I wish to set up the Mail service to act as an smtp server only.
I have FileMaker Server running on this server, on which I am using a plug-in to send mail to my ISP's smtp server. But I am outgrowing my daily sending limits through my ISP (100/day), and would like to run my own smtp server instead.
I have turned on the smtp mail service and it is running, but I'm not sure what credentials I should use to authenticate when connecting to this smtp server...

I have turned on the smtp mail service and it is running, but I'm not sure what credentials I should use to authenticate when connecting to this smtp server...
    Why use any?
If the Filemaker Server is inside your network and this server is just acting as a relay for outgoing mail then you don't need authentication at all. Just tell postfix to trust local networks ("Relay mail from the following networks" in Server Admin and add your internal addresses) and you're set.
Since the server won't be accepting mail from outside clients or servers that's all you need to do. There's no need to authenticate since the connection is coming from a trusted network.
If you still do want to use authentication then just provide any username/password combo that is valid for this server. You could even create a dummy account just for this purpose if you prefer.

  • Mail service on, SMTP on, but clients can't connect -- please help a novice

    Hi all,
We use 10.4 Server on a G5 Xserve. A few days ago we had a problem with our server being used for spam. That was fixed quickly enough, but the problem is: while being fixed, the mail queue accumulated more and more mail, and it wasn't going out. The "retry" button didn't work. Repairing the database didn't work.
To make a long story shorter, after reading different things here and on the web, I managed to delete all the messages in the queue. All the users are still there. But now, when I turn the mail service back on, everyone gets a "can't connect" error.
I've used the terminal before, but I've always been following directions; I don't know what to type or why. But if someone with patience can help, I can follow directions, and would really appreciate the help. Right now I'm dead in the water.

OK, I've already admitted that I know nothing about this, so I'm sure this will give some people some laughs. That's OK, so the only thing I've changed was the name of the company. I have more peace of mind knowing I'm not showing who's got problems. The other thing is that I don't know when my part of the history begins. Maybe it's all me, but I don't remember doing anything even remotely close to changing IPs. So here it is:

  • Yahoo mail service(SMTP & POP3) to browser

I think Yahoo mail service(SMTP & POP3) is open only to browser. Is it possible to interact with Yahoo mail service thru URL Programming means thru URL programming to send retrive mail and attachment ? If so then how ? Plz help! It's urgent.
    Thanx & Regards,

Is it possible? Sure, it's possible, it's only software after all.
Has someone already done it? Not that I know of.
But then you already know that because you've already read

  • Mail service in Server Admin not saving changes

We have a Xserve with Snow leopard (10.6) and we have dovecot installed. We want to serve IMAP. According to mail it is on. Whenever we make any changes to the mail service in Server Admin and press save the values revert back to what they were (so no accepting the new values). We do not get any errors and we have checked the logs but nothing suggests why this has happened.
    Any idea's?
Alternatively, is there anyone here really familiar with DoveCot that we could speak to? or any companies to contact?
All we want to do is run/host our own IMAP mailserver.

  • HT5996 Mail service on the OS X Server 4.0 works only locally

I updated my server to Yosemite and bought the next version of OS X SERVER 4.0.
At first glance, everything was as it should, until I noticed that I have new messages until the time when the server is updated. Then I myself sent a letter from the mailbox iCloud, but has not received a new mail.
Went into the mail settings on the server and see a message:
"Available on your local network at Server.local"
I once again set up e-mail in the section "Domains", but the service is still only available locally.
Messages from these mailboxes can I send. I get a letter, if it is sent to a mailbox that is configured on the same server, but if I send a letter from another server, it does not come any letters.
    maping ports configured correctly.
How to make sure that the service has been available on the Internet and was able to receive emails from any servers?

    These values are important:
    mail:postfix:host_whitelist:_array_index:0 = "ns.100greenwood.net"
    mail:postfix:host_whitelist:_array_index:1 = "mail.100greenwood.net"
    mail:postfix:domains:_array_index:0:name = "100greenwood.net"
    mail:postfix:mydomain = "100greenwood.net"
    mail:postfix:enable_list_server = yes
    mail:postfix:mydestination:_array_index:0 = "localhost"
    mail:postfix:mydestination:_array_index:1 = "$mydomain"
    Also in Terminal, type: hostname
That should show you the name of your host.  Then type this command:  sudo changeip -checkhostname
It should give you a result of:  dirserv:success = "success"
If it doesn't then you have a hostname issue.  The section above that refers to mail:postfix:mydestination:_array_index:0 = "localhost" uses the variable localhost to find your local server.  If there is a name mismatch between them, bad things will happen.  Make sure you change everything to the Internet (not the *.local) address so it routes properly.

  • Setting up mail services. Name of server needs to be changed?

I setup my xserve with snow leopard. By default it was named server.ourcompanyname.private.
Here is my problem Im trying to host our company web site along with mail services. Need to bring all this in-house.
I have with my web provider 5 dedicated IP address, and router address. I bridged the modem to an airport extreme to hand out all the ip address and DHCP, this was done with apple support.
I need advise on how to go about setting up all the services. Can the name of the server be changed without causing major problems?
    Any advise would be appreciated.

One other note. Can I change the .private. to .com and will this help me setup mail and hosting services?

  • Error in the SMTP log of the mail service regarding "master.lock"

I am getting the following error in the SMTP log of the mail service, Anybody might have any suggestions:
postfix/master[87670]: fatal: open lock file /var/lib/postfix/master.lock: cannot open file: Permission denied.
The permissions of the master.lock file are as follows:
    -rw-------  1 _postfix  mail  33 Jul  7 10:25 master.lock
The Mail service stops after a few minutes from starting it
    I appreciate your feedback

I found the problem.. the executable job was referring to a none existing batch file..
I have refreshed the database from production some time ago and the jobs I have setup are referring to production scripts and paths (which we didnt have on dev)..
    This is now resolved.

  • SMTP vs. external mail service

I need to use SMTP on our webserver to send mail via a web form. However, we use an external 3rd party mail service and when the webserver passes the message for a @mydom.tld user to SMTP (Postfix), it gets passed on to dovecot and dumped in a local mailbox on the server (if the user name corresponds i.e. [email protected] => user account 'miles'). If the usernames don't match, _www gets the bounce message in its local mailbox. IMAP and POP are disabled.
DNS MX records point to the external service (with servers at priority 0, 10 and 20).
What I want to happen is for the SMTP server to send the message to the MX servers (the third party service) instead of trying to deliver it itself.

Well, the big question is whether or not this server should accept mail for your domain, mydom.tld.
If it should, then this is appropriate - it sees a message for a domain that it's responsible for.
If, on the other hand, this server isn't responsible for your domain's mail then tell it so.
Right now you've told it that it SHOULD accept mail for mydom.tld:
    mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, mydom.tld, $mydomain
So any mail addressed to any user @mydom.tld is going to get delivered locally. If that's not what you want, remove mydom.tld from mydestination and the message will follow the normal SMTP/MX rules.

    Hi Lee,
In the SCOT, SMTP node you need to have the SMTP server address. if you've given the sap server IP address, then revert it back.
    What Juan has already mentioned,
"you need to make sure that the IP address of the SAP System is populated on the SMTP relay agent for the mails to leave the domain." that means you've to tell your SMTP mail admin guys to add the SAP server IP address in the relay agent.
    Regards,
    Debasis.

  • How do I change mail so only the most recent mail from a person opens?

When I open mail and go to a new mail all of the files/documents that, that person has ever sent me from previous days open as well. The other emails that I do not want also show up on the right side of my mail in the preview the document part. How do I change it so that I only see the email I am clicking on not a scrolling document of all of the mail items the sender has sent me. Also how do I change it so I only see the most recent item (the one I am clicking on) in the preview email on the right side? Thanks

In the View menu, uncheck (Expand All Conversations).

  • Mac mail service isnt listening on default ports at all other than SMTP

Mac mail service isnt listening on default ports at all other than SMTP.
I can port scan locally and here is what's listening
    Port Scan has started…
    Port Scanning host: <IPADDRESS>
         Open TCP Port:     25             smtp
         Open TCP Port:     53             domain
         Open TCP Port:     80             http
         Open TCP Port:     88             kerberos
         Open TCP Port:     106            3com-tsmux
         Open TCP Port:     311            asip-webadmin
         Open TCP Port:     389            ldap
         Open TCP Port:     443            https
         Open TCP Port:     464            kpasswd
         Open TCP Port:     587            submission
         Open TCP Port:     625            dec_dlm
         Open TCP Port:     749            kerberos-adm
    Port Scan has completed…
    Mail service is on.

first place to start is always /var/log/system.log
stop/start mail service while watching that log.
You will probably catch some dovecot/imap lines that will yield clues.

I have a problem sending mail via smtp. I use a satellite system and the average return time for a ping is 675ms. Is this a problem with mail? If so can I change Mail to accept it. The problem also exists with Lion and on both my MacPro and my wife's Imac. I also see my mailboxes randomly disconnecting and reconnecting. Any other ideas of a possible cause?

I solved it myself, after the "note" which came back from FF/Mozilla just as I finished my message, commenting on what it was that my system had , I wnnt back to check my plug-ins etc. I downloaded the latest Java, BOTH 32bit AND 64 bit versions and latest Firefox.
    Now all is working.
    Thanks,
    B.
