Changing AppleTalk printer name

I have a Personal LaserWriter 4/600PS and I need to have its name changed. Unfortunately, I no longer have a machine that runs OS9. I have a MacBook Pro that can only boot into OS X. This printer is originally a LocalTalk printer. I us a Farallon Ethernet bridge so that I can have the printer talking to the ethernet port of the computer. This is what the setup looks like:
Printer <--localtalk-->Ethernet Bridge<--ethernet-->MacBook Pro
Thanks for the help!

If you can cart it to a friend or associate who has a Mac that can run Classic or Mac OS 9, you can change its name. The name and attributes are recorded in a semi-permanent memory inside the printer, and will be retained when you put it back on your own Network.
It also appears that if the name is all you want to change, you can use
System Preferences > Print and Fax > Set Up Printers > (select the printer)
and choose "Show Info" from the "Printers" menu. You will be shown a screen that contains a drop down menu with three sub-screens
• Name and Location
• Model
• Installable Options
On the Name and Location sub-screen the name can be changed, and the button at the bottom will then turn into an "Apply Changes" button.
Most folks are looking to change additional options, such as Startup page Yes/No, Print density, or get page count, which are not settable using these simple Mac OS X screens.

Then if i close this popup window which is showing error message and change the printer name from 'USJC-PM03' to 'LOCL', and click on execute button, the printer name is not getting changed and still the error message is getting displayed. How to remove this error message?

  • To change the printer name

    Hi,
I have a requirement to change the printer name when the user tries to send the invoice with the same o/p type second time also. How to change the printer name?

We have a field in NAST table which tells us whether the copy is printed for the first time or more then once. Read the value basing on the output type (i.e., Message type in nast table)
Now in your driver program & modify the parameter OPTIONS that are passed to function module OPEN_FORM, goto Option and pass your printer name according to your requirement.
    Ex: if <print> = 1.
      <printer name> = 'XXX'.
        if <print> GT 1.
      <printer name> = 'YYY'
Close the thread once your question is answered.

  • Change the printer name

How can I change the network printer names?

    What model printer is it?
Generally speaking, Bonjour can't help you with renaming. It is a "service discovery" protocol.
But if you tell us the model, someone may be able to help with renaming.

  • Can't see printer name in the print dialog box as the printer name is too long

This is actually causing siginificant pain as I am using a tablet and moving around a number of floors/buildings needing to be able to print from where I am.
When printing from Acrobat reader, the print dialog box that comes up does not have a horizontal scroll bar and does not fit in the names of the printers in my organisation. We are unable to change the printer name, so it basically means that when using Acrobat, we can't select a printer.
All other windows applications show more characters and also have a horizontal scroll bar in the print dialog box so you can scroll across to see the rest of a long printer name. Why is acrobat not using the standard windows print dialog?
Has anyone come across this? Help!

This is the Acrobat forum, not the Reader forum. In the future you should check there. I am not sure why you can not change the printer name, unless you do not have administrator rights. The name of the printer has nothing to do with where the print copy is sent. It is just for the purpose you mentioned of identifying the printer to print to. If you are not the administrator, ask your IT folks to change the name for you and explain why.

  • Need help with changing the product name for a HP LaserJet Pro 401n to use on a ePrint network.

I am in a school environment, naming printers is imortant.
Bonjour Service Name and Device Description name have been changed. IOS7 devices see the Bonjour name but ChromeBooks see the Product name. How can I change the Product name on the printer so that it is then recognized by HP Connected and shown to ChromeBook devices?

You should be able to change the product name in Google Cloud.  The ChromeBook uses Google Cloud to print (Google Cloud uses HP ePrint).  Log into your google account and change the printer name there.

I have two printers on my network.  Does anyone know how to change the printer nomenclature - Officejet Pro 8600  (0B54AF) to a recognizable name...like Brad's Office when you use Airprint?

You would have to change that in the printer's settings on the printer, if that option is offered by the manufacturer. The iPhone just finds printers on the network and uses the name they have given themselves or that were given to them when they were set up.

  • Network name keeps changing with Print Share

I have 3 iMacs on a network using a Brother MFC-9840CDW printer. My computer is set for print sharing. I keep getting messages that the name of my computer is already in use on this network and it keeps adding a higher number at the end of the name. But as soon as it does that, the other computer cannot print until I change my computer name back to the previous number. It works for a while, and then I get the network name error message again.
What can I do to resolve this? Thanks.

New MB user. have windows network. installed printer CUPS driver for my brother 7820N printer. can print when connected directly with USB. MB recognizes printer when not connected directly...must be going through the wireless network. try to print and little printer icon on DOCK starts jumping...says printer is Off-Line. can see the files in the queue.
Any ideas on how to make the printer "on-line"? Thank you.

  • How to change the print queue name with Lexmark printer?

Is it at all possible to change the print queue name from Lexmark_3500_4500_Series, to something shorter? I try to link printouts from an old Sun Unix system, thru my iMac to the Lexmark X4580 multifunction printer. However, the Sun/Unix will not accept this long print queue name...

Apologies, I misread. The only way I know of changing the Print Queue Name is by readding the printer.
     > System Preferences > Print & Scan > Add
Choose your printer, make sure you change the print queue name to something different (equates to the Printer Name).
When you need to print, simply select the printer you just added.
Once your happy it works, delete the old printer from the list in Print & Scan.

  • How do i change a printer's ip address?

    hi
i've been given an old hp2100tn laserjet printer and need to get inside and change the ip address settings and device name stored in the printer's memory from its previous location.
does anyone have any general experience doing this kind of thing, or specifically with that model printer? i don't have a web interface or anything like that.
thank in advance for any suggestions
    p.

Thanks again, but this doesn't address my question. I'll try and be clearer...
I understand that my router can assign ip addresses and where to find them.
My problem is that I need to physically change the machine name and the ip address of the printer, which is stored in the printers memory. This information was created when the printer was set up on the network to which it belonged before I aqcuired the printer. I can read this information by getting a printed configuration report from my printer.
Now, at present I cannot see the printer over my network -- the router will not deliver an ip address to the printer. I am beginning to understand that this may be because appletalk is not functional over my wireless router. I can also not print using ip to its current [old network] ip. When I try to do this, the printer directs the job over the internet to its old network address range, and printing fails... of course the printer is no longer on the old network, it is beside me here!
So, the alternative I wish to try to reach my printer is by direct ip printing, obviously to a new, local ip address. In order to try this I need to establish a recognizable ip address for the printer, as a stand alone machine. I am presuming at this stage that if I can assign an address within the 192.168.x.x range of the router, and if the router then recognises the printer on the network, I may then be able to use ip printing to reach the printer as a local machine.
My question is, does anyone know of a way to connect with the internal memory of the printer via ethernet in order to assign the printer a new ip address?
Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for the advice so far.

  • Printing to AppleTalk printer via Ethernet

I’ve read all the pages I could find about this topic, and several threads on this forum, and tried everything suggested but I still can’t get my Mac Mini with OS X 10.7.4 to print to my HP printer.
My hardware setup is thus: HP LaserJet 6MP is connected by its AppleTalk cable through an AsanteTalk bridge to an Ethernet hub. (There is also a DSL box connected to the same hub). The hub is connected to my Mac Mini via the Ethernet port. This setup worked fine with my old eMac with 10.3.9. The printer was recognized automatically and I did not need to do any special setup, at least with 10.3.9. I understand that Apple dropped support for AppleTalk with Snow Leopard, but is there any possible way to make this work?
I bought a Mac Mini with OSX 10.7.4, and I have connected the same hub to the Mac Mini via the Ethernet port. The DSL works fine. But I am unable to print. I have read through the following pages and tried everything suggested on these pages:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4507
    http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-resurrect-your-appletalk-printer-in-snow-leopard/
What I have done to set up the printer is:
    1) I have downloaded the latest HP drivers and run Software Update today, to verify that all my software is current.
    2) I powered down everything and then powered everything back up starting with the printer, then the hub, then the Mac.
    3) In System Preferences -> Network, I noted that it says “Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address 76.212.150.40” So I am assuming the IP address of the printer is 76.212.150.40 However I'm not sure if I'm correct in assuming that.
    4) I ran Terminal and typed PING 76.212.150.40 and got a series of replies,
    64 bytes from 76.212.150.40: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.071 ms and so forth.
5)I go to System Preferences -> Print & Scan. I click the + to add a printer, then the IP icon. For Protocol I have tried all 3 options, but the last time I chose Line Pinter Daemon - LPD for the protocol, because it’s an old printer.
    6) For the address I put in 76.212.150.40
    7) The “Print using” field came up automatically with Generic PostScript Printer, but I chose Select Printer Software... and chose HP LaserJet 6P/6MP - Postscript.
    8) I click “Add” and I get a warning message, “Unable to verify the printer on your network. It cannot be currently determined if ‘76.212.150.40” supports the Line Printer Daemon Protocol. Would you still like to create the queue?” I click Continue.
    9) The next dialog box asks me to verify my printer’s options (the only one is Total Memory and I set that to “6 Mb or more” because the printer has 7 Mb of memory. I click OK.
    10) The printer shows up in the list of printers. Under it says, “Idle, Last Used.” I print a test page of one sentence, using Tex-Edit Plus. The printer’s status changes to “In use” in printer list. In the Print Queue, it says that it is printing my document, but under that it says “The printer is busy.” And it stays like that.
I have tried deleting that printer, and adding it again with all the above steps. I have also powered down the whole system and started up again. Now it says, “The printer is not responding.” and if I turn the printer and hub off and then back on again, I am back to “The printer is busy” message.
Is the problem here that I am trying to still use AppleTalk or LocalTalk? Besides the LocalTalk port, the printer also has 2 parallel ports (a B-type and a C-type) and an infrared port that I have never used. Would a parallel-to-USB cable or adapter solve this?
Is the problem that the DSL is interfering with the communication between the Mac and the printer? Is the problem with OSX 10.7.4? Or did I make a mistake in the setup process?
Is there a solution for this or will I have to buy a new printer? The printer still works fine and worked well with 10.3.9. I would hate to just discard the HP LaserJet because it is a workhorse that has printed over 120,000 pages for me and still seems perfectly useable.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

You suggested earlier that "The only way you can print to an AppleTalk printer from OS  X 10.6 or later is if the printer is a shared printer running on a Mac running OS X 10.5 or earlier.
I am using a Macbook Pro with 10.7.4 and like Bob Weaver, I have tried all of his methods as well. What is the set up as you describe above. I have an old HP laserjet 5m with the Directjet.
To be absolute about things, I should change that wording to indicate AppleTalk only printers need to be shared from a Mac running OS X 10.5 or earlier.
You have a JetDirect card that allows for other connections/protocols other than AppleTalk.
I am trying to use it with my mac using an ethernet cable. I cannot ping it, I cannot see it but my ethernet shows its connected with the green light. The HP is a work horse and I would hate to turn it into a door stop. Iv'e printed the config sheet and have entered the IP address with no luck.
I cuurently use a Netgear Wireless Router/Modem and have tried using its ethernet ports as well but I continue to have no luck. Can I print to this thing or is it a paperweight
You appear to be on the right track here, but you appear to need to make some changes to the JetDirect setting to use it on your network.  I have never worked with a JetDirect card, so I cannot give you all the specifics.  Bob Weaver's post will probably be of more help than my outline.  You may also want to search the Apple Discussion boards a bit more -- especially the OS X 10.6 archives.  There were a lot of posts regarding switching over from AppleTalk to network cards.
    The basics are:
    1.  Set the JetDirect card to use a routable address that your router can use.  You can look at the router's configuration to get the expected range of addresses and the gateway address for the router.  You will also need to pay attention to the subnet mask to make sure the two devices are on the same network.
    2.  I generally recommend that you reserve an IP address on the router for the printer.  You will need the JetDirect's MAC address to do this.  The benefits of setting a static IP address for the printer is that you can power down the printer assuming it will hold the set address.  This saves a lot of time and headaches.
    3.  When you configure the printer with the static IP address, subnet mask, and router gateway, be sure to turn off the option for it to get its address using DHCP.  That is, you don't want the printer to get a new address from the router every time you power it up or down.
