Changing color modes = degradation?

HI,
Beginner's question: Does it "matter" if you start with a CMYK or greyscale image and put it into RGB in order to use a filter that only works in that mode, then bring it back into CMYK, etc.? Does the image degrade or other wise lose quality?
When you do go hopping back and forth, doing, say, 3 different things to an image,does it matter which order or is it cumulative?
I know RGB has a higher Gamut range, so from CMYK to RBG it must resample and vice-versa?
Image doesn't have to be perfect but I'm curious just what is happening.
Thenx.
I think I should have posted this to the Photoshop forum...sorry...but if you have thoughts I'll take them!

Sorry for the nebulous reply but the answer to your first question is 'maybe'. Why are you going back and forth between cmyk and rgb? Usually, the best solution is to work the file in rgb and only convert it to cmyk upon output. You can also do this by embedding an rgb file as a smart object in a cmyk file.
You won't lose quality by doing this, per se, but by going from cmyk to rgb to cmyk could spell trouble if you are doing this for offset printing. The original cmyk file may have specific information for a certain press or black generation scenario. When you go to rgb and back to cmyk you are potentially destroying this black generation from the original and replacing it with something that may not print the way one wants it to.

  • Cannot change Color mode

    Hello,
    I was provided a file from a customer that is RGB. I need to change it to cmyk for printing. HOwever I cannot change the color mode. All my options in the Mode section under Image are greyed out. I have never seen this happen before.. Here is a screen shot of the Mode.
    The image has been flattened. I am using PS cs6 on a mac. I have never seen this happen before. Does any one have any ideas?

    Strange. Could the file permissions be set to lock you out?
    In the Finder, do a Get Info in the file and look at the permissions. If at the bottom, your name says "read only," then you need to change the permissions to allow you to read AND write.
    To change permissions, use BatChmod, but be careful to change the permissions on that file ONLY.
    It's FREE at:

    ... And if that doesn't solve the problem, can you share the file?

  • Display changes color mode after restart.

    I recently turned off my computer for a couple days and when I restarted my iMac screen is displaying in a strange color mode. It looks like the contrast is turned up and the color depth is in 256 color mode. I've gone into the preferences and tried about eveything I can think of but nothing switches it back to normal.
    When I restart, everything goes back to normal for about 3 seconds and then it switches back to this strange display settings again.
    I'm stumped, any help would be appreciated.

  • Can i change color mode in keynote?

    Whenever I import pictures or logos to keynote, the colors turn out really skewed as from how they should look like.
    COuld someone please tell me what might be wrong and how I can fix that? I have tried several differnt options when I export files from illustrator. Strange thing is, they llok perfect in Finder and Preview.
    Panicing here. Thanks.

    I have just had the same issue. I am importing a logo I have created in Illustrator, which was done in RGB with specific values. The following methods all produced result that was different than the source…
    -Copy/paste the logo from Illustrator with sRGB profile active in the document, and with no profile, with the same result.
    -Placing the EPS directly was different again.
    -Placing an AI file with embedded sRGB profile. No good either.
    I also usually generate a PNG for client to use and when placing this into Keynote the colours were correct. The PNG was created in Illustrator with sRBG profile active. This worked for me, but I have seen other say it does not.
    I've seen someone else claim changing the colour profile in Photoshop etc to the same one used by your screen will fix the shift, as Keynote supposedly uses the profile you have in system prefs. I tried this and it made no difference.
    I assume the issue is colour profile conversion, but see no method that fixes it. Other than PNG.

  • Changeing color modes from rgb to cmyk

    Good Morning Everyone,
    I am editing a file for a Realestate customer of mine. For some reason her previous designer didn't understand to make print material in cmyk ( I cant believe how many "designers" dont understand the difference.). I am now going back and correcting that issue so they will print accuratly. Usually I can do this in Illustrator and just go to the edit menu and then go to edit colors and choose convert to cmyk. That option is greyed out in this situation. Does anyone no why? I am attaching a screen shot. I am using illustrator cs6 on a mac running 10.7.5.

    What Jacob says but check that you Color Settings are set right for the type of printing in question. Otherwise the colours may not convert satisfactorily.

    What is the problem specifiaclly?
    If the images are intended for web use I would recommend converting them to sRGB which could be done with Edit > Convert to Profile or with File > Save for Web, but as including a Save step in Actions and applying them as Batch can sometimes cause problems I would go with regular converting.
    You could also try Image Processor Pro.

  • Oracle form query mode does not change color to blue

    Hi, I have created a custom form and using query mode in it. However on hitting F11, the record does not change to blue, instead it turns white. Can someone please guide me as to what I should be doing to get this right?
    Thanks for your responses.

    The fact that it doesn't change color when you "Enter Query" mode tells me your Custom Form does not conform to Oracle Application Programming Standards. I recommend you visit the Oracle Applications Documentation web site, choose your EBS version and scroll down and look at the Oracle Applications User Interface Standards for Forms-Based Products and Oracle Applications Developer's Guide to ensure your Custom Form conforms to Oracle Standard.
    Also, I suggest you always use the TEMPLATE.fmb (or if you can't find this form, use the APPSTAND.fmb) as the starting point of any Custom Form. This will ensure you have the minimum required objects and code in your form.
    Hope this helps,
    Craig B-)

  • Illustrator CC: Changing Document Color Mode + Edit Colors

    Let's say I'm going to export a PNG.
    If I switch the Document Color Mode from CMYK to RGB, IS IT THEN NECESSARY to also Edit/Edit Colors/Convert to RGB, if I'm just going to select each element and assign specific RGB values anyway?
    In other words, is simply switching the Document Color Mode to RGB sufficient before manually assigning specific RGB values?
    I'm thinking Edit/Edit Colors/Convert to RGB or CMYK is just relying on Illustrator's best judgment. Am I correct?

    Color management needs to be set up in a way that it works as you want it to. Don't turn it off.
    BTW: actually you can't turn it off. It is so deeply integrated in modern software that it will always work somehow.
    Have all the numbers you set up in your colors be transferred correctly into the PNGs? Then don't worry.
    When converting your document from CMYK to RGB all color values get converted: object colors as well as swatches. No need to use the Edit colors function.
    When using File > convert to RGB resp CMYK document color mode, Illustrator applies the rules you have set up in Edit > color settings. That is: the profiles, the conversion engine, the intent.
    Change one of the settings and you get different colors.
    If you need to use specific RGB values, first convert the document color mode, then set up the color swatches and apply them to the objects.

    For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head.  Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
    IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt.  I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation.  Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

  • How to change the document color mode(RGB to CMYK)?

    Kindly advice me how to change the document color mode(RGB to CMYK) via scripting in "illustrator cs3".

    Somebody wrote and posted this a couple of years ago.
    // Duplicate the selection from the active document into a new document.

    var docSelected = app.activeDocument.selection;
    if ( docSelected.length > 0 ) {
    // Create a new document and move the selected items to it.
    var newDoc = app.documents.add();
    if ( docSelected.length > 0 ) {
    for ( i = 0; i < docSelected.length; i++ ) {
    docSelected[i].selected = false;
    newItem = docSelected[i].duplicate( newDoc,

    else {
    docSelected.selected = false;
    newItem = docSelected.parent.duplicate( newDoc,
    ElementPlacement.PLACEATEND );
    else {
    alert( "Please select one or more art objects" );
    It should give some ideas about how to proceed.

  • Why does a placed .eps file with a Pantone color change the color mode to CMYK?

    I am working on a 2-color newsletter in Indesign CS5... black and Pantone 227U.
    Whenever I place a duotone .eps (black + 227U) or an Illustrator vector .eps with 227U in it, the color mode for that swatch changes to CMYK. An Illustrator vector which is 100% 227U also gives me the same issue.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Thanks Rob!
    I also unchecked “All spots to process” and the spot color appeared in the Separations Preview.

  • Color change in Mode in 1 file has changed every image systemwide--help!

    running cs3 on imac osx
    making business cards, rgb  mode.  colors just right.   then the guy that does my printing tells me i have to give the file to him in cmyk.  so i changed to cmyk in Image>Mode, knowing that the colors would be different.  printed a version and ugh, hated it; much darker and more drab.  so, changed Mode back to rgb. But--OMG-- the color, when i printed it, had NOT changed back!  i opened another file--one that i had not messed with, which has never been anything but rgb.  and lo!  it too had changed colors to the dark and drab!
    what in the world is going on?  please help
    thank you!

    i used to always post in Photoshop-Macintosh.  does this no longer exist?  i tried posting in Photoshop but so far people arent able to even respond to my question as if they have read it.  Michael, would you be willing to help me via that thread?  http://forums.adobe.com/message/4119156#4119156

  • Changing color without modifying existing items.. problem!

    Hello,
    I'm reletively new to flash, and am trying to modify a template and am running into a problem and I don't seem to know why Flash is acting so strange.
    I am going into a movie clip to edit the color of an item, and when I do so with a tint, it overrides any additional effects such as light, and text. The color appears almost as if it were just slapped on top of everything.
    When I edit the color in advanced mode, it is really a hit-or-miss to get the correct color, and will only modify when changing the offset RGB.
    And also when doing this, the text gradually changes color, for example: there are 4 items in total that I want to edit the color of. Each item is a different colored box with text on the front (for a main Navigation of the website). --- The first item, the text will stay white. Gradually through the second and third items it starts to change, and by the fourth / last item, the text is completely blue.
    Is it possible for a portion of text to be connected somehow to an object within the animation in a movieclip? If so, is it possible to go inside and edit this? -the shape, animation, and text?
    Is there an easier way to change the color of an item inside a movie clip? I can supply additional information if needed.. files etc.
    Am I doing something wrong / completely missing something?
    Thank you very much in advance for any help and/or advice!
    New Flasher,
    Lisa

    go one level deeper than the movieclip so you're editing the shape.

  • Converting from pantone to cmyk color mode in Indesign CS3??

    I am working on a business card for a customer, I am using Adobe Indesign CS3.
    I use an outside company for the printing job called 4over (4over.com) and they require you use their cmyk pdf print engine so they can do the job properly... Basically to break it down: I am in Indesign CS3, I choose Print, and as the printer I choose their "4over pdf cmyk print engine" so the colors do not convert and the color doesnt change when they use their printers.
    4over is telling me my document is in pantone color mode, they can see the pantone color 371C, but not the cmyk values.
    How do I change from pantone color mode to cmyk color mode???
    if anyone can help me please. I would really appreciate it.
    I attached the file I sent to 4over incase that helps anyone answer my question.
    Thank you,
    Brandon

    Before exporting, in the swatch panel, select your Pantone colour, right click and select swatch options. Change the color type to Process and the color mode to CMYK.
    If it's a business card and you showed the client a pantone swatch, know that you won't get the same colour results. There's a very useful Pantone book available that shows swatches side by side with CMYK values.

  • ITunes puts my computer in windows 7 basic color mode. It also does not recognize my iPad as viable video source

    When I start iTunes on my desktop computer, instantly it switches to Windows 7 Basic Color mode:
    "The color scheme has been changed
    The following program has performed an action that requires Windows to temporarily change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.
    Program: iTunes
    Publisher: Apple Inc.
    Process indentifier (PID): 3296
    Windows will automatically change the color scheme back to Windows Aero when this program or other programs performing similar actions are no longer running."
    When I close iTunes, it immediately switches back.
    THEN, when I try and move a movie I have recently downloaded ("Tangled (2010)" or "Tron: Legacy") to my iPad (1st edition) or iPod Touch, iTunes tells me these devices are not supported:
    "Tangled (2010) was not copied to the iPad "My iPad" because it cannot be played on this iPad."
    I get the same message with "Tron". This is only happening with the movies I have downloaded after February. All previously downloaded movies work just fine. I have found when I transfer the new files to my laptop and use iTunes on there, everything works normally.
    New for today...
    When I plug the iPod Touch into the the desktop computer, iTunes locks up completely. I only get it back when I unplug the iPod.
    Solutions...
    I have done minimal talking via email with iTunes support. They told me to make sure I had the updated version of everything. I had explained in my original inquiry I had done that already. When I replied as such, I did not get a reply. I sent several messages explaining that I have deleted itunes all together from my computer and reinstalled the program from scratch. Finally, I received a second reply to reinstall iTunes.
    Also, I have tried several ways of moving the movies over to the iPad and iPod: dragging/dropping, sync, auto sync. I get the same error message every time.
    I am more than a little frustrated with Apple's lack of support and hope someone out there knows something that can be done. PLEASE HELP!

    Just curious, have you resolved your issue yet?
    I am working on a friend's computer that had the same issue and it turned out that her iTunes was set by some crappy program called TuneUp Companion to use Windos XP compatibility.
    If you have TuneUp Companion, uninstall it.
    Then check to see if iTunes is trying to run in some prior windows version compatibility and turn it off
