Changing function keys to symbols

Hi,
I used to have an ibook with a wireless keyboard, and on the wireless keyboard I had reassigned the function keys so that they had symbols that I use all the time. f1 Ø etc, however I have now bought a new macbook and these no longer work. I've been trying to work out for ages how I did it so I can reassign them but can't remember how I got up the keyboard map to do it, could someone let me know?

I have an problem with function keys functionality on Symbol MC9090 devices (Windows mobile 5.0) for an SAP ITSMOBILE aplication, I'm trying associate events in javascript to keyboard, but don't get work.
In the explorer desktop key function is fine but on the MC9090 devices don't work.

The function keys don't work in Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile.
You will need to use an Industrial Browser. Like this two:
Motorola Symbol PocketBrowser
NaurTech CETerm Browser
Then you have to do the key mapping according to the manuals of you Industrial Browser.

How to change function keys not listed in keyboard preferences?

Hi,
I am trying to delete the f14 and f15 function keys which now set brightness. I want to use these for photoshop actions, but can't now. Also, shift/f12 opens the dock and I'd like to remove that as well. The keyboard pref. doesn't not list these are being set and I can't turn them off.

I don't think Apple provides a simple way to change or override keyboard shortcuts that affect hardware functions like screen brightness, except in a limited way for laptops that have an FN key.
The shifted versions of Dashboard & Expose shortcuts are among the weird little "eye candy" features of Tiger. Adding "shift" to the shortcut does the same thing as the unshifted version, but v..e..r..y s..l..o..w..l..y, at least on Macs that support advanced Quartz display features.
As noted, you can change the shortcuts for Dashboard & Expose, but I'm not sure if the slow motion, 'shifted' forms are inherited by any other key combination besides the F9 through F12 ones.

For a really weird effect, try holding down shift & tapping a random sequence of F9 through F12 strokes: because everything is slowed down, you can have several Expose effects occurring at once on the screen.

How to change the Function Keys functionality?

Hello everyone I'm new here :)
I have a stupid big problem which is whenever I try to click the function keys in Programs, Games, etc.. it doesn't work for that program or game it just does what's on them!
For an example when I click on F10 or F9 it changes the volume, and when I click on F2 and F3 they change the brightness of the screen!!! And F5 doesnt refresh!!! Thats it they do nothing else at all, how can I change that to their old original ways like in Windows Vista and XP!!!
I'm not sure if the problem is with Windows or Toshiba Laptop, I have a Toshiba Satellite Windows 8.
Pleaaaaaaaaase someone help! This is urgent.

You can change it to work in standard mode.
To do this open Toshiba desktop Assist > System settings > Keyboard and change Function keys mode to Standard F1-F12 mode.
After restart check it again.

How can the symbol and non-English diacritical marking/punctuation pallet, available in pre-Snow Leopard OSes with various combinations of letter or number keys and functional keys, be accessed in Snow Leopard? Those pre-Snow Leopard versions worked on the fly as one was making text in any pedestrian application and its native font (Mail, Text Edit, for example). One didn't need to dig around in font libraries, change font preferences, etc.

It hasn't worked like that since the Early Chalcolithic (ie, System 7 or thereabouts).
You've already got plenty of answers. Briefly (and grossly oversimplified),
- Mac OS X conforms to a standard known as Unicode; in its current incarnation, it defines over 100k characters.
- A keypress is translated into a character according to the current keyboard layout.
- The graphic representation of a character (ie, glyph), is provided by the current font.
- If a font lacks a glyph for the requested character, either another font will be automatically chosen (Mac OS X text engine), or some form of feedback (empty box, question mark, etc) will be used.
- To inspect the actual key codes, use a utility such as Key Codes.
- To inspect the current keyboard layout, invoke Keyboard Viewer.
- To inspect the full complement of glyphs of a font, invoke Character Viewer (also accessed with the Special Characters command).
(Remember that both these utilities are resizable and zoomable -- you can enlarge them to a comfortable viewing size, then zoom out to see more of the screen for your original task.)
- For a more detailed look, use a utility such as UnicodeChecker.
- The default keyboard layout depends on your Mac OS X localisation.
(Keep in mind that there's no need to stick with the default layout; choose whichever one makes sense to you, given your language, habits, and proclivities. Mac OS X comes bundled with quite a few, including some obviously designed for the huddled masses of refugees from the Dark Side, who, in their wretched ignorance, have the unmitigated gall of labelling our native ways "really uncomfortable". Oh well, this, too, shall pass.
If none of the supplied keyboard layouts fits your needs -- if, for instance, you write your emails in Etruscan -- go out on the 'net, you'll find quite a few. Or write your own with Ukulele, it's not really all that difficult.)
- Use Keyboard Viewer to familiarise yourself with the current layout and to enter the odd character; but, to be proficient, you should learn your layout to the point that KV is no longer needed.
- Use Character Viewer to enter the odd character not available in the current keyboard layout.
Neither Keyboard Viewer nor Character Viewer are effective tools for more extensive needs, eg, for writing and editing bilingual or multilingual texts. In such a case, you should enable the respective keyboard layouts and switch between them with a keyboard shortcut.
A few interesting layouts bundled with Mac OS X have already been mentioned. Let me add three.
- Dvorak: several layouts based on the Dvorak keyboard. It is claimed that the latter is more productive and lessens RSI risk.
- US Extended: based on QWERTY, it offers a more extensive set of diacritics (eg, caron, breve) via dead keys.
- Unicode Hex Input: also based QWERTY, it allows input by Unicode codepoint (in hexadecimal), so it's the most extensive layout of all; eg, to enter the character "Parenthesized Number Twelve" (U+247F), hold down Option, type "247f", release Option.

Changing functionality of Function Keys in forms 10g

Dear users....One of the big difficulties users facing in my 10g forms applications is that its Function Keys have totally changed like that of Enter-Query or Execute-Query. In forms 6i user was habitual of working with F-7 & F-8 for this purpose but in 10g its quite different. Can u tell me that how can I match the functionality of these Function Keys in 10g to that of Forms-6i???

I mean other users should keep on using the default fmrweb.res file but I should use the file compatible with 6i shortcut keys. Is there any configuration for this in formsweb.conf file?

You can not create function key in default selection-screen. Actualy there are 5 pushbutton available there . you can activate or de-activate them. please check the following link for further detail.

You do not tell us what OS version you have. In OS 10.8.2, do this:
Apple Menu / System Preferences / Language and Text / Input Sources.
Select the language you want. Mine is set to Canadian English.

L420 Screen Brightness does not change with Function Keys

I have installed the latest driers and since then I am unable to change the screen brightness using function keys. I have installed multiple driver updates hence it is difficult to find out which driver is causing the issue. Any pointers in this regards would be a good help.

The newest Intel HD driver (from Intel) is causing this issue. Uninstall it and reinstall the driver provided from Lenovo.

E72 Space Bar with Function Key acts as Symbol

If my Function Key (bottom left) is pressed once or twice then the Space Bar has same effect as pressing the Symbol Key. So if you have Function pressed twice to enter a series of numbers you cannot put in a space without unsetting the Function Key first. Does anyone know if you can fix this?

I now discover this only happens with Predictive Text turned off.
If Predictive Text is turned on then Symbol + Space Bar gives you a space.
Nokia support suggested Factory Reset - but this makes no difference.

F1 and F2 keys won't change to standard function keys even after changing keyboard preferences.

I want to use the function keys on my MacBook Pro as standard function keys. I checked the box in keyboard settings that's supposed to change this, and I changed the Mission Control shortcuts that corresponded with function keys. F3-F12 all seem to have gotten the message, but F1 and F2 still change the screen brightness and won't work as standard function keys no matter what I do. How can I fix this?

Is there a way to Change the Function keys on a bluetooth keyboard for ipad

I just got kensington wireless keyboard for my ipad 2 but the program that i am using dosent allow me to use the function keys instead for volume, brightness ect.

I have had to explain often that no pressure is needed. It's a "touch" screen, not a "press" screen. Most people believe they have to push down hard to make some sort of contact.

Hi, I recently just bought a new keyboard with numerics and when i hook it up, all my function keys are different. F12 now shows me the date and time/calculator. F11 scoots my open boxes do the side.

Recently, I've changed my keyboard and I've change my hard drive. The new keyboard has a different function Keys shortcuts, for example F11 doesn't decrease volume it makes the web page fullscreen. I don't know if the change was because of the new hard drive or because of the new keyboard. I need to change all of them to make them do the same function of the key symbol.
The other thing is this key ] when I press on it, it makes Caps lock be ON, and if I press on it again, it makes Caps lock be OF. I want it to be like this ] when I press on it.

I'm not precisely sure about the situation with the ']' key. It sounds as if perhaps the keyboard doesn't match the language or region of the system. Without knowing more, the first place to go would be the Keyboard tab in the Keyboard preferences pane.
There are buttons there to set the type of keyboard connected, and also check the settings of the modifier keys, including 'Caps Lock', 'Shift', 'Command', and 'Option'.
As far as setting keyboard shortcuts for 'F' keys, if you go to the *Keyboard Shortcuts* tab in the Keyboard preference pane and click on the categories in the left column, you should be able to see current settings, and define new ones if necessary.
