Changing ID of host machine for local network

I don't have a local network yet I keep getting messages that the OS has changed the identity of my machine in order to allow file sharing!! "FirstName-LastName-.3 has been changed to .4" Nothing seems to change in terms of operation, but it is irritating and I wonder why it's happening. I have "File Sharing" off.

this happens when the system detects a computer by the same name on the same local network.
It's also happening when there is only one computer....which is apparently the OP's situation as I took it.
yes, I know. what I meant is that the computer thinks that there is another computer by the same name on the network. it does not mean that there is actually another computer by the same name present, just that your computer thinks there is one for some reason. resetting the router is the first thing to try in such situation.

  • How to set up with cacheing DNS for local network?

    Our new Lion Server has a static IP Address pointed to over the internet by our registrar's zone file. Planning the Lion Server installation process with the intent of hosting Web, Mail and Open Directory services to a small number of users who are nearly all located off-site. I do also want Lion Server to be a caching DNS Server and DHCP authority on the local network to replace what dnsmasq does on our current Linux server.
    I am looking forward to offloading some of the lower level Linux administration tasks and putting myself in the hands of the Lion Server Setup Assistant and Server App :-) but at the same time don't understand some of  its assumptions and fear having to spend a lot of time experimenting and re-installing.
    So, specifically, I want the Server App to know that my Lion Server has a "Host Name for the Internet" but that the DNS it sets up will not be the DNS for my zone - I will be managing that through my registrar's interfaces.
    Second problem is my fnot understanding what name space devices on the local network will / should use. e.g.  The Linux server will be available for backups etc  on the local intranet (and optionally have a static ip address on the Internet) but MacBooks, PCs, iPads and iPhones will be served ip addresses by the Lion Server's DHCP. So will / should these dynamic devices have their machine names fully qualified by our domain name with RFC 1918 style ip addresses or something like .local?  How do I tell this to Lion's Server App / Setup Assistant? How easy is it to update these initial settings later?

    You do indeed need to have a master zone on lion server.  There's no way to get around that since Open Directory depends on Kerberos and Kerberos depends on the DNS.  LS scripts may see that the rDNS record exists, but I highly doubt that it'll auto configure everything for you... and given the number of possible variables, I bet that even if it worked something would need additional tweaking.
    Sounds like an interesting lab excersize.  You should try it on a test server!
    Again... you just need to folow the set up procedure that Lion Server presents you with.
    It won't be smart enough to see your external records and use them to configure a key distribution center for your OD.
    As far as your caching needs...  Could you set up your DHCP server to set the DNS server setting to show your internal server as the first hit, and your external as the second?  That way when the client requests a resolution it'll not get a hit on your local server but will from the external?
    The question then is how long will it wait for a response from the first server?  Or will the first server respond with "I don't know" sending the client immediately to the second.
    The server set up that I have works similarly.  I have an internal master DNS that is replicated to a secondary.  The first DNS has an A record (community.server.com) that points to the INTERNAL ip address of the secondary server that's also running the web service.  The first server is running DHCP.  It tells the clients to use the first and second servers as it's DNS lookup.
    Now...  Externally, my registrar hosts an A record for community.server.com that points to the external IP address of my router which then forwards the request to the proper port on the internal network.
    This way, the local clients internally look up and get a response locally when they go for community.server.com.  Externally, clients that look up community.server.com get the external connection to the router in my school.
    Yikes...  I fear that this is as clear as mud!

  • Cannot resolve host names on local network

    It is a local network with router, few Windows computers with shared drives and one Mac.
    Windows shares appear correctly in SHARED and can be used without any problems, like iTunes and iPhoto libraries are on those shared drives and work properly, even if ip address of those computers would change.
    BUT - if I am trying to use VNC and connect to hostname:port, it says that server is not specified. If I try to ping hostname it says Unknown host.
    At the same time, similar ping from Windows computer work without any problems.
    It could be possible that router does not support something standard and communicates with Windows using something windows-specific, but what confuses me is that I can see computer names resolved in the finder already! Also, as I said iTunes and iPhoto can work with shared files on dynamic ip's which would be not possible if host names would be not resolved.
    Thanks.

    Domain Name Resolution for local IP addresses require a Local DNS server running on your network.
    Bonjour names will resolve without a Local DNS server. So this is why iTunes and iPhoto works as they use bonjour technology.
    A bonjour name ends in .local so in your macs sharing preferences you give the mac a name of imac its bonjour address is imac.local
    Other than that you are best giving your devices fixed IP address and adding there hostnames to your hosts file.
    the contents of /etc/hosts on your mac would look like
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    so at the above that you could add for example
    192.168.1.5 mypc
    192.168.1.6 myprinter
    Then you could ping 192.168.1.5 by
    ping mypc
    So would have to add these entries to each hosts file on every computer on your lan.
    Or you could setup a local dns server and give each computer on your LAN a fully qualified domain name.

  • Easy filesharing setup for local network

    Hi folks,
    I'm currently trying to enable easy filesharing for my local network.
    Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a Laptop and it just worked.
    But I can't get filesharing to work under Arch (Chakra 64bit Beta 4) witch kde4.
    Samba is installed, the daemon is running... i cant figure out why it doesn't work.
    When I open Dolphin and go to Network I can see all the PCs in the local Network.
    After opening i can see 3 things (when looking at the system i am currently working on):
    <hostname>[00:21:5d:72:b4:84]  (has kind of a Networksymbol)
    <hostname> (has a shell-symbol)
    SFTP File Transfer on <hostname> (folder symbol with world in front of it)
    when clicking on the first one with the strange numbers, dolphin crashes.
    I dont know why! what i would like to have is a real symble filesharing for my local network i dont mind whether its nfs oder samba or whatever.
    thanks for help!

    We only want to connect/browse the server locally , so I'm a bit stumped on the need to set up DNS.
    Ideally i would like to browse the server directly by entering the IP address (and port number if need) followed by the site name.ie:
    By default, virtual hosting setup via Server Admin use name-based virtual hosting, meaning that Apache looks at the hostname in the request to work out which site configuration to use. That's why you need DNS - a way to map the numerous names to the various sites you've configured, e.g.:
    http://site1.server.local/ -> site 1
    http://site2.server.local/ -> site 2
    (where both site1.server.local and site2.server.local resolve to this server's IP address)
    It is possible to do port-based virtual hosting (where you include the port number in the URL) - to do this you leave the hostname blank in Server Admin and ensure that each site has a different port number configured.
    http://server1.local:8001/ -> site 1
    http://server1.local:8002/ -> site 2
    There's no easy way to map URI elements to different sites, e.g.:
    http://server1.local/site1 -> site 1
    http://server1.local/site2 -> site 2
    This can be done by editing Apache's configuration directly, but you can't do this via Server Admin (unless you really are just mapping to different directories and not entirely different sites).

  • Airport for Internet with Wired Ethernet for local network

    I'm trying to set up a small local network of 3 PC laptops connected via a router to a Mac which is acting as the central repository for the 3 PCs. The 3 PCs and the Mac are all connected by Ethernet cables to the router which is deliberately isolated from the Internet. However, I also want the Mac to use Airport to get access to the Internet via another router which does have Internet access and provides wireless support.
    What happens is that the wireless Internet access for the Mac works OK as long as I have the Mac disconnected from the small PCs+router network. As soon as I connect the Ethernet cable to the Mac, it loses Internet access.
    It seems that the Mac is preferring to try to use the wired connection over the wireless connection for Internet access.
    How can I force the Mac to use the wireless connection for Internet access and leave the wired connection for my small local network? That is, how can I change the priorities for the two network interfaces (similar to the interface metric setting in Windows XP)?

    read this and then look at this.. this is a screen shot of what you need to do..
    http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/Picture%203.png
    if you share your wireless and tell it to share it THROUGH your ethernet you'll be okay..
    another thing that you may want to do is to access your routers settings and tell it to work as a switch rather then a router. however if you can get it to work using the article up top then you might not need to do that.

  • OS X server for local network Drupal web development

    HI All,
    First post here, so here goes, please go easy
    Background
    We're a small web development shop and bought a mac mini server so we can collaboratively develop our websites. Previously we have all been using MAMP on each of our local machines to develop Drupal websites.
    *Help needed*
    I've tried configuring some custom sites through the web services preference pane, but have no luck in viewing these custom sites from our other mac clients.
    Ideally we want to virtual host multiple sites on our server that we can see on our local network.
    We only want to connect/browse the server locally , so I'm a bit stumped on the need to set up DNS.
    Ideally i would like to browse the server directly by entering the IP address (and port number if need) followed by the site name.ie:
    http://myserve.local/mydevelopmentsite
    Essentially, i would like to replicate MAMP functionality - hosting multiple sites on the server that can be collaborated on from the local machines.
    I've really found it hard to find any configuration information via search, most topics seem to refer to modifying regular OSX installs to work as a server. My understanding is that as OSX server has all the necessary LAMP components that this should be a fairly straightforward task.
    If anyone can share any links, advice or tutorials that would be much appreciated.
    Best Regards
    Hixster

  • Can I use wifi for internet, while ethernet only for local network?

    Hello everyone.  We have two internet connections at our office.  One is wifi only -- but fastest uploads.  The other is connected to our ethernet network (and very slow).  Really, it's not much a network -- just iMacs connected to a switcher.  When transferring files between iMacs, obviously we want to remain connected to ethernet.  But when uploading and downloading files, the wifi option is quickest (long story why -- our offices next door, can't run a physical line yet, yadda yadda).
    So we find ourselves constantly switching between the two in network preferences.  Not only is this a pain, but it doesn't allow us to upload or download directly to a drive on the network.
    Is there a way to tell the preferences to use wifi for internet, and ethernet for the local network (without internet)?
    (We have updated mountain lion on i7 imacs, and most recent airport extreme)
    Thanks!

    Your downstairs router can be installed anywhere in your home, but telephone companies or ISPs are only obligated to install their equipment just barely inside its service entrance. Usually, that location is the worst possible one for a home network, since it's in a basement or some remote corner, far from all the devices that use it.
    Your idea to install an Ethernet cable to extend its reach to a more suitable location is an excellent one and will be worth the effort or expense. If you don't want to do it yourself a qualified electrician can perform the work quickly and elegantly, and you may find the cost surprisingly affordable. Ask your friends and neighbors to recommend a reputable electrician and get a written estimate.

  • Unable to access hosts from outside local network

    I have set up a few different name-based virtual hosts for a small client. DNS is set up correctly; sites can be accessed internally; everything is working OK.
    However, none of the virtual hosts can be accessed from outside their internal network. I know for a fact that DNS is set up correctly as dig tells me so. Firewall port 80 is open and everything (mail, vpn, etc.) else is working fine.
    I've looked over the httpd config files many times and just can't seem to find anything wrong. Any suggestions on where to look for problems?
    Xserve   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    What if you swap out your Apache config for a moment with the default one? Do you have reason to think that it's something in your name-based virtual host settings?
    Can you access a web site from the outside if you only have the default config on there, accessing it maybe via IP address?
    If so, we'll probably need to know more about your virtual host setup in order to troubleshoot this any further, considering you have other services running and accessible on the machine.
    Are you getting any errors? What happens when you try to reach one of the websites? Have you looked at your error log for any of the sites?

  • Can I make Virtual Host accessible to local network only?

    On our web server (with only one interface and IP address), we have two virtual hosts:
    -An intranet site which should not be viewed by general public.
    -A public website accessible by general public over the internet.
    How do I ensure that our web server only serves the intranet site to the local 192.168.0.0/16 network, whilst still allowing anyone to view the public website?

    Quick thoughts. You can handle this a few ways. Here are two fast ones.
    You can just use the host name and order your virtual hosts public first, private second. Then make sure that the URL for the public site is the only one on you public DNS. For example, if you have two VHs, www.yourdomain.com and wiki.yourdomain.com. Then on the public DNS servers, create a record for the www host only. That way, if the wiki host is entered outside of the environment, it will not resolve to an address. Now if you are using wildcards on the outside, then this may cause some issues and I can not predict this early in the morning if the wildcard would resolve to the primary VH or pass the URL in the header.
    So the other option is to modify the directory container within the virtual host file. For example, your VH file has a Directory container that probably looks something like this.
    <Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents">
    Options All -Includes -ExecCGI -Indexes +MultiViews
    AllowOverride None
    <IfModule mod_dav.c>
    DAV Off
    </IfModule>
    </Directory>
    And to it the following:
    order deny,allow
    deny from all
    allow from 192.168
    This will restrict access the to the 192.168 subnet. Refine it more if needed to 192.168.0 etc.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine for clients + Network Home folders?

    I currently use Retrospect to back up my client machines, but frankly I don't like it that much. I'd really like to have Time Machine working for all of the client machines so that the users can easily grab copies of their own backups, rather than having to request them from me. I plan to continue to use Retrospect to back up the data on the server and to back up non-Leopard and non-OS X clients.
    However, I'm also hoping to move some or all of my OS X clients to network home directories. I saw some mention in a forum that Time Machine doesn't work with network home directories, but I can't find anything about this in the server documentation. Is this true? Can't I have my network home directory clients back up their home directories to another share point using Time Machine?
    Thanks in advance for any information on this or alternative ideas.

  • Windows machine on local network can see all volumes mounted on my MBP

    I have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.4 with 4 volumes mounted (Macintosh HD, Scratch Drive, Files, & Media). On this same network I have a Windows 7 machine. I just noticed today that in the Windows File Explorer I can see all 4 of the volumes that I have mounted on my Mac. Not only can I see the volumes, I can drill down into folders on my Mac, open files, and even make changes to and save those files.
    I've checked all the Sharing options on my Mac and everything is turned off and my firewall is turned on. I know that in the past I wasn't able to see these volumes from the Windows machine. I recently upgraded to 10.6.4 but don't know if that has anything to do with this as I rarely do anything with that Windows machine so I'm not really sure when this started.
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

    Check this
    Go to system preferences--------->
    Sharing -------------->
    File Sharing ---------------> ( you said this is not selected )
    then
    go to the options ------------->
    and See if SMB sharing on or not .
    this is the only place which is sharing with windows .......

  • Obtaining MAC addresses of machines on local network

    Hello, I have written a small network management program in Java (used to remotely turn our machines on and off)
    Off via starting an external program (beyondexecv2), and on via creaing the Wake On Lan magic packet.
    Currently it looks up the MAC addresses in a textfile of mahinenames->mac address.
    I'd like to be able to scan the network and automatically pick up the MAC addresses of any machine that is currently on.
    I have seen other network scan programs that do this, is it possible in Java?

    Thanks Omkara,
    Thats nearly the way I've decided to do it (after finding similar on another thread)
    Basically need to itterate through my list of machine names (or get them from a standard scan of the IP range), and for each run the ping command on the ip/machinename, then immidiatly run the arp -a command and parse its output looking for the IP address of the machine, and that will give its corrosponding MAC address.
    Problem sorted.
    Cheers for the help though.

  • 802.1x authentucation only on Virtaul machine. i want to by pass EAP authentication on Host machine

    i want to do EAP authentication (802.1x) authentication by the client installed on Virtual machine. i want to by pass EAP authentication(802.1x) on Host machine, because i wanted to test it on the client in VM not on the host machine. for wifi it works fine because i can have a USB wifi NIC which connects to VM directly and the authentication goes fine as host machine NIC does not come into the picture at all.
    but in Case of wired VM NIC has to go via Host NIC.

    Hello,
    I managed to do that with a VM and a host, both authenticating in wired, behind a phone. The host would receive an ACL limiting its traffic to just internet and the VM could access the internal network. (do not ask to discuss the use case).
    The considerations were that :
    both host and VM would need to be on the same dynamically assigned VLAN, as 2960/3750 do not support two DATA domain hosts in different vlans (3850 apparently supports or will support it), so I had to have 802.1X both on host and in VM.
    the VSwitch in VMworkstation had to be in bridge mode.
    authentication mode multiauth had to be enabled in the interface in order to cope with multiple authenticated sessions behind the same interface.
    What is exactly your question?

  • Windows machines on the network

    I just installed Leopard... so still new to the environment.
    I think it's cool to have other computers on my network easily accessible from the sidebar, but my sole Windows XP Professional Dell machine is not. It's there in the sidebar, but I get a Failure Connecting message when I click on it. I previously was able to connect to the internal C-drive of that computer, plus an external F-Drive.
    What do I need to re-configure to fix that?
    ...Charles

    I am also still having problems writing files from my Mac (running Leopard 10.5.1) to mounted Windows drives -- both folders on the Windows 2003 server (SMB/NTFS) at work and the Windows XP virtual machine (NTFS/Parallels) on my Mac.
    1. Any type of account: reading and copying from Windows to Mac works OK.
    2. Guest account on mounted Windows shared folder: writing (dragging and dropping) from Mac to Windows works OK (this was problematic in 10.5.0, but is fixed in 10.5.1).
    3. Authenticated user on mounted Windows folder: writing (dragging and dropping) from Mac to Windows does *NOT work*. Leopard stalls when copying files (> 4kb) to Windows, sometimes producing a -36 error code (stating that the Finder cannot complete the operation because some data cannot be read or written). I cannot even connect to my virtual machine as an authenticated user. I am always logged in as a guest even after choosing the "Connect as" option.
    4. Dragging and dropping files directly into a running Parallels virtual machine (thus not via the mounted drive) works OK.
    Interesting enough, I had not problems copying data from my Mac running Leopard to our old Windows 2000 server, which was replaced by the 2003 machine more than a week ago. So, this seems to be a Leopard - XP/2003 issue.
    When having to back up data from my local Mac to the Windows 2003 server, I just drop files into Parallels and use the virtual machine for Windows networking.
    Apple, please fix this.
