Character name/description from Character symbol

Hi,
This may sound a bit unusual, but probably someone already did this.
Is there any way to show the description or name of a character that was just typed in the String control?
So for example, if I type " ", the description is "<space>", and if I type "," then the description is "comma".
Yes, I can build this through a case structure on my own, but if it's possible to fetch from some existing database (like the Char mapping), then it's better. Because on my own, I may miss some character and after all, it's a lengthy process.
Thanks and Regards,

Hi GerdW and MC,
Thanks.
I found my complete table on the http://www.theasciicode.com.ar/ page.
It's a pity I cannot use the UNICODE characters in LabVIEW, alongwith other simple characters. I must change the whole text's font to Symbol, for example to use Greek letters in between other text controls (like Enum or String or Tree View), as I asked in another thread. That would have been really good.

  • Field name retrieval from field symbols after assigning to field in a struc

    We have an internal table of about 100 columns. First 7 of them have key values and other fields are data fields. Out of remaining 93 fields, any 2 to 3 fields have data stored in it in each record. Using field symbols in a loop (93 fixed iterations), we are identifying which fields has a data in it. Once we identify the field, how do we retrieve the name of the field / column of the table. We are performing further processing based on name of the field.
    Any ideas how to get the name of the column assigned to field symbols?
    sample raw code piece is as below:
    clear n.
    Do 93 times.
      n = n + 1.
      assign component n of structure itab to <fs>.
      if not <fs> is initial.
       Get name of the field in cfname.
        perform process_record using cfname.
      endif.
    enddo.
    Thanks.
    Regards.

    Hi,
    Try this..use the function module GET_COMPONENT_LIST to get the fields of the internal table and store it in an internal table ITAB_COMP..
    Then use READ TABLE ITAB_COMP INDEX sy-index..
    You can get the field name from the work area..

  • How to remove character names from the drop down

    I was writing off screen dialogue. Normally I would write  FRED (O.S.) but when I did this, Story treats it as a new character - different dot in the outline.  In trying to correct it I now have four different instances of the FRED character that pop up in the character drop down list. How can I make the ones I don't want go away?  How do I indicate a character is off screen without creating a new character?

    I hadn't noticed this as I use a (VO) tag under the character name rather than (OS) but this is a good point.  I agree, simply ignoring anything in parantheticals is a good way to go on this one.  It all goes to the same name then.  Good ideas.
    Not sure about all the formal formatting issues as I'm really an experimental filmmaker so I don;t get that involved int he formaities but can't you also simply write these as follows:
                                            JUDGE LAWLESS
                                                      (VO)
                             Why did Jesse go and shoot that old goat anyway?
    To represent his voice being heard over the scene.  Or is this indicitave of the person being physically on camera for the scene but overheard as an inner dialogue?

  • "not a valid short file name" and "invalid character" install errors

    Disclaimer: Apple does not necessarily endorse any suggestions, solutions, or third-party software products that may be mentioned in the topic below. Apple encourages you to first seek a solution at Apple Support. The following links are provided as is, with no guarantee of the effectiveness or reliability of the information. Apple does not guarantee that these links will be maintained or functional at any given time. Use the information below at your own discretion.
    Symptoms
    While upgrading or uninstalling a Windows software application (such as iTunes for Windows or QuickTime for Windows), you may receive one of the following error messages:
    file name is not a valid short file name
    The folder path 'folder name' contains an invalid character.
    ... where file name could be the name of any file, and folder name could be the name of any folder.
    In the case of software that uses advertised shortcuts (such as recent versions of iTunes for Windows or Safari for Windows), the messages may also appear when attempting to launch software that has already been installed.
    Resolution
    The error messages are usually caused by damage to the installation database for the application. Clearing the installation database for the application by using the Windows Installer CleanUp utility can usually get you past the error message.
    (1) Click [here|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301] first, and read the important information about the utility.
    (2) Click the *Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now* link on that page to download a file titled msicuu2.exe.
    (3) Open the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install it.
    (4) In your Start menu click *All Programs* and then click *Windows Install Clean Up.* The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (5) Select the software you're getting the "not a valid short file name" or "invalid character" message for from the list and click Remove.
    (6) Click OK in the confirmation dialog that appears.
    (7) If you have multiple entries for the software you're getting the "not a valid short file name" or "invalid character" message for, repeat steps 5 and 6 for the other entries for the software.
    (8) Click Exit.
    (9) Restart the computer.
    If you were getting the "not a valid short file name" or "invalid character" message when trying to upgrade or launch software, now try reinstalling the latest version of the software.
    If you were getting the "not a valid short file name" or "invalid character" message when just trying to uninstall software, program files for the software in question will remain on the PC after it has been removed by the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. If you want to remove leftover program files, check in at the appropriate forum at [Apple Discussions|http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa?categoryID=1] and ask which files can be safely removed.

    Go to Microsoft website to fix installer file problems.
    Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:
    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall
    Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

  • Curve 9380: Return from character input to QWERTY keyboard

    Hello,
    I own BlackBerry Curve 9380 smartphone (all touch, without physical keyboard).
    I have the following issue:
    Consider you're writing a text message, when you need a question mark you're tapping on the "&% 123"  button in the left-down corner and selecting the question mark. In order to return back to the original QWERTY keyboard you need to tap on the button again, now "ABC".
    Is that possible to automate the return to the QWERTY keyboard from character input keyboard after tapping the "space" button?
    Keyboard is returning automatically back only if you will tap on the "Enter" button.
    Adding the "space" button would be a great enhancement for touch-based devices featuring BlackBerry 7 OS.
    Thank you.
    P.S. I didn't find any better medium for my concern than this forum, if somebody knows how to reach directly to software engineering group, please let me know.

  • Having problems creating a zip file with Japanese language character names

    I have a bunch of files with names in Japanese characters (also Chinese, Korean, Spanish etc, but this will do for an example). The encoding is Unicode.
    I wish to be able to put them in a zip file, then extract them again using any old zip tool (WinZip,PKZip,7-Zip etc)
    Trouble is, every time I do it, the files inside the zipfile end up with garbage character names. The contents of the files are fine, though.
    I'm aware that there used to be a bug in the java.util.zip.* classes regarding character encodings (http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do;jsessionid=5bd4fe01ad8a7b4ec89afef5005da?bug_id=4244499) but as far as I can see it's supposed to have been fixed I have also tried the ZipOutputStream class from apache which allows you to set the encoding manually - no luck there either (just many different varieties of garbage characters)

You need to look for the simillar information for other tools. You can find more on tools on their website.

    Hi All,
    Can i remove NULL values (hexadecimal - 0000) from character string. I am uploading a file from presentation layer (shared server) and getting NULL values in many fields which i want to remove.
    please assist.
    Thanks for you help..

    Hi,
    Most likely, nobody needed it, but if anybody in future will need the solution for related problem  - here's solution:
    data: lv_nullchar type xstring value '0'.
    shift lv_xstring right deleting trailing lv_nullchar in byte mode.
    shift lv_xstring left deleting leading lv_nullchar in byte mode.
    This hack deleting null chars in lv_xstring at end file and at begining of file. Works perfect for me, where i also worked with files.

    How do I make multiple text bold, for example scene headings or character names?

    You can do that by editing the template of the document.
    Open the document, go to Edit->Template. A dialog will launch which will have element types on the left and it's properties on the right.
    Select Scene Heading(or Character name) on the left. On the right, go to 'Text' tab and click on Bold checkbox.
    Press OK.

    You can search the forums for that error message and find previous discussions - they all boil down to the same problem.  Somewhere in your query that calls this function, the code invoked implicitly converts from string to date/datetime.  In general,
    this works in any version of sql server if the runtime settings are correct for the format of the string data.  The fact that it works in one server and not in another server suggests that the query executes with different settings - and I'll assume for
    the moment that the format of the data involved in this conversion is consistent within the database/resultset and consistent between the 2 servers.
    I suggest you read Tibor's guide to the datetime datatype (via the link to his site below) first - then go find the actual code that performs this conversion.  It may not be in the function you posted, since that function also executes other functions.
    You also did not post the query that calls this function, so this function may not, in fact, be the source of the problem at all.

    If we run JCO server in both my client machine(from developer studio) and in the WAS machine(stand alone Java program), everything is ok. In the Abap side, the SM59 unicode test return the destination is an unicode system, and the ABAP report call the function can run smoothly.
    But we package this JCO server to a web application and deploy to WAS, problem occured. The SM59 unicode test still say the destination is an unicode system. But the ABAP report runs with an ABAP DUMP:
    Conversion error between two character set
    RFC_CONVERSION_FIELD
    Conversion error "RETN" from character set 4102 to character set 4103
    A conversion error occurred during the execution of a Remote Function
    Call. This happened either when the data was received or when it was
    sent. The latter case can only occur if the data is sent from a Unicode
    system to a non-Unicode system.
    I read the jrfc.trc log, it shows it receives data in unicode 4103(that's ok), but send data in unicode 4102(that's the problem).4102 is UTF-16 Big Endian and 4103  UTF-16 Little Endian. Our system is windows on intel 32 aritechture, so based on Note 552464, it should be 4103.
    Why it sends data (Java JCO server send output parameter to ABAP) in 4102?????
    What's the problem??? Thank you very much!!

  • How to get Locale from Character.UnicodeBlock

    Hi All,
    For Ex: I enter Japanese language (Hiragana/KATAKANA characters) in the text field. My expected result is Locale: 'ja' (this is belongs to Japaneses language)
    How to get locale value from Character.UnicodeBlock.
    or we have any other way to get locale value from "input locale" means what ever language( Japanese /Chinese/other languages supported by java) i enter in the text box and i want to identify the locale of the text.
    This is the example program i found in the forum.
    import java.awt.BorderLayout;
    import java.nio.charset.Charset;
    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.JTextField;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    import javax.swing.event.DocumentEvent;
    import javax.swing.event.DocumentListener;
    public class TestSBC {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
         SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
         @Override
         public void run() {
              new TestSBC().createGUI();
    private void createGUI() {
         JFrame frame = new JFrame();
         frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
         final JLabel messageLabel = new JLabel("Here comes a message",
              JLabel.CENTER);
         final JTextField textField = new JTextField();
         textField.getDocument().addDocumentListener(new DocumentListener() {
         @Override
         public void changedUpdate(DocumentEvent e) {
              checkEvent(e);
         @Override
         public void insertUpdate(DocumentEvent e) {
              checkEvent(e);
         @Override
         public void removeUpdate(DocumentEvent e) {
              checkEvent(e);
         private void checkEvent(DocumentEvent e) {
              messageLabel
                   .setText(validateText(textField.getText()) ? "KATAKANA"
                        : "other");
         frame.add(messageLabel, BorderLayout.PAGE_END);
         frame.add(textField, BorderLayout.CENTER);
         frame.pack();
         frame.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
         frame.setVisible(true);
    private boolean isKatakana(char c) {
         Character.UnicodeBlock unicodeBlock = Character.UnicodeBlock.of(c);
         System.out.println("unicodeBlock : " + unicodeBlock);
         boolean isKatakana = Character.UnicodeBlock.KATAKANA
              .equals(unicodeBlock);
         System.out.println(isKatakana);
         return isKatakana;
    private boolean validateText(String text) {
         char[] chars = text.toCharArray();
         for (char c : chars) {
         if (isKatakana(c)) {
              return true;
         return false;
    Thanks for your help...

    Hi Joerg22
    Thanks for your response.
    Can you please tell me ...is there any another ways to find the "input locale" value in java.
    There are 3 important locales in Windows: “Input Locale”, “User Locale” and “System Locale” and all 3 can be different.
    That is you can have System Locale = English, Input Locale = Chinese and User Locale = Japanese
    This might represent a Chinese user working in japan on an English PC.
    In this example i want to identify Input Locale means "Chinese "
    Thanks for your help.
