Checkpoint info

Looking at the below log from alert log does it mean that checkpoint took 5 mts?
Tue Mar  3 11:04:04 2009
Beginning log switch checkpoint up to RBA [0x1a9d.2.10], SCN: 2337499124

Tue Mar  3 11:09:09 2009
Completed checkpoint up to RBA [0x1a9d.2.10], SCN: 2337499124

I see this in ADDM report for that time period:
FINDING 1: 49% impact (3133 seconds)
The SGA was inadequately sized, causing additional I/O or hard parses.
RECOMMENDATION 1: DB Configuration, 49% benefit (3133 seconds)
ACTION: Increase the size of the SGA by setting the parameter
"sga_target" to 36000 M.
SYMPTOMS THAT LED TO THE FINDING:
SYMPTOM: Wait class "User I/O" was consuming significant database time.
(12% impact [797 seconds])
Waits on event "log file sync" while performing COMMIT and ROLLBACK operations
were consuming significant database time.
RECOMMENDATION 1: Host Configuration, 14% benefit (923 seconds)
ACTION: Investigate the possibility of improving the performance of I/O
to the online redo log files.
RATIONALE: The average size of writes to the online redo log files was
52 K and the average time per write was 2 milliseconds.
SYMPTOMS THAT LED TO THE FINDING:
SYMPTOM: Wait class "Commit" was consuming significant database time.
(14% impact [923 seconds])
I don't really understand why it's doing this or what it means

  • Question about an UPDATE statement (Answer conflicts in two Q & A papers)

I need to know the correct answer to the below question as two exam papers provide different answers?
Q- Which two steps are performed the first time any UPDATE statement is issued after the Instance is started? (Choose any two)
A - Creating the parse tree of the statement
B - Writing the modified data blocks to the data files
C - Writing the modified data to the archived redo log files
D - Updating the control file to indicate the most recent checkpoint
E - Updating the data file header to indicate the most recent checkpoint
F- Reading the blocks to database buffer cache if they are not already there
Please help, as im preparing to give exams and such conflicts are making me even more confused.
    Thanks!

Well, the order would be A, F, B, C and I'm not sure on the checkpoint info. Archived Redo would be written AFTER online Redo.

  • Purge trails

    Hi,
If i'm using PURGEOLDEXTRACTS s:\ggs\dirdat\rl*, NOUSECHECKPOINTS parameter in MGR prm, how the mgr process purge the old trail files from disk without checkpoint information, what is the purpose of NOUSECHECKPOINTS parameter?

    tiath,
NOUSECHECKPIONTS means that the manager will delete trail files, even if they are still needed by one of the OGG processes (replicat or pump)
For example; if your pump is stopped, in the checkpoint information it is stil pointing to a certain trail, because it still needs it.
With the NOUSECHECKPOINTS the manager will delete it, and when you start that pump again, it will abend, because the trail it needs is not there anymore
If you use the USECHECKPOINTS option, the manager will check all the checkpoint info for all the processes of there is a process that still needs that trail file, if one of the OGG processes still needs it, the manager will not delete the trail.
So NOUSECHECKPOINTS is a dangerous option, personally i have never used it.
    regards,
    Eric

  • Required info abt checkpoint process & checkpoint event.

What is the difference between checkpoint process & checkpoint event in ORACLE.

checkpoint process is background process of an oracle database (Mandotry process) it is part of oracle instance (instance = memory + background process) and inturn oracle database = instance + Database (datafiles, control files, redo log files)..
regarding checkpoint event ? if i understand your question correctly then so some definition below...
    Oracle Checkpoint
A checkpoint performs the following three operations:
Every dirty block in the buffer cache is written to the data files. That is, it synchronizes the datablocks in the buffer cache with the datafiles on disk.
It's the DBWR that writes all modified databaseblocks back to the datafiles.
The latest SCN is written (updated) into the datafile header.
The latest SCN is also written to the controlfiles.
The update of the datafile headers and the control files is done by the LGWR(CKPT if CKPT is enabled). As of version 8.0, CKPT is enabled by default.
    Events that trigger a checkpoint
The following events trigger a checkpoint.
    Redo log switch
    LOG_CHECKPOINT_TIMEOUT has expired
    LOG_CHECKPOINT_INTERVAL has been reached
DBA requires so (alter system checkpoint)
Additionally, if a tablespace is hot backuped, a checkpoint for the tablespace in question is taking place. While redo log switches cause a checkpoint, checkpoints don't cause a log switch.
Time and SCN of last checkpoint
The date and time of the last checkpoint can be retrieved through checkpoint_time in v$datafile_header The SCN of the last checkpoint can be found in v$database.checkpoint_change#.
    Size of redo log
If the size of the redo log is to small, the performance of the checkpoint will not be optimal. This is the case if the alert.log contains messages like Thread .. cannot allocate new log....
    Thanks

  • Short dump when expand info provide

    Dear all,
I have 0GL_ACOOUNT info object that act as a master data.
the problem is when I want to expand at the info provider instantly create short dump
the overview of the short dump is :
    Runtime Errors         ASSERTION_FAILED
    Date and Time          12.08.2009 10:08:16
    Short text
         The ASSERT condition was violated.
    What happened?
In the running application program, the ASSERT statement recognized a
situation that should not have occurred.
The runtime error was triggered for one of these reasons:
         - For the checkpoint group specified with the ASSERT statement, the
activation mode is set to "abort".
         - Via a system variant, the activation mode is globally set to "abort"
for checkpoint groups in this system.
         - The activation mode is set to "abort" on program level.
         - The ASSERT statement is not assigned to any checkpoint group.

    Please advice

    HI,
I have read the sap notes and that is exactly what happen to me.
but I don't understand how to correct it.
    It said :
This error cannot be corrected automatically. Use the method DELETE_VERSION_FROM_DB of the class CL_RSTRAN_STAT to delete the existing A version of the transformation manually in the target system.
Ensure that the transformation is permanently deleted from the database; therefore, you should verify that the correct transformation ID is specified (in the short dump, the TranID that is specified in the short dump is in the variable L_TRANID).
anybody know how to use delete_version_from_db ?
    please advice

    REPLY TO ANSWERS:
yes, i use blur and a couple of other security and ad blocker add-ons.
actually, just now, it was the "firefox help" screen that always displays the code.
based on info provided by cor-el, i started disabling add-ons... I use zonealarm firewall and antivirus which installs its own toolbar... when i disabled blur & other add-ons in turn, the problem continued... when i disabled the zonealarm toolbar, the problem stopped.
so im going to surmise that its the zonealarm toolbar causing the problem... ill uninstall it
great product in firefox... been using it for years... like everything about it... and now the support too!
thank you for the help.... cheers!!

  • Deleting VM with snapshot/checkpoint is extremely slow in SCVMM 2012 R2

It appears deleting VM with checkpoint from SCVMM 2012 R2 is extremely slow.
    There is the configuration:
one SCVMM 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2
one Windows Server 2012 R2 as file share server (SMB), stores all VM files. The share is managed by SCVMM . uses local SSD disk. two gigabit ethernet ports connected to a switch.
two hyper-v hosts running Windows Server 2012 R2, non-clustered, managed by SCVMM, each hosts has three gigabit Ethernet ports connected to the switch.
Everthing works including live migration. Here is the problem:
When I deleted a VM with checkpoint, it appeared that SCVMM/Hyper-V merges something, it took a lot of time on reading each AVHDX and write to VHDX, this results two problems:
    1. It took a lot of time and bandwidth. I am about to delete the VM (and all its files). Why SCVMM/Hyper-V wants to merge all files? The deletion took 29 minutes for a 36GB VM.  This VM is just plain standalone VM, no usage of template.
The expected result is to just delete all VM files and remove VM, don't do merge. (BTW: VMWare doesn't do merge, the deletion is done in a few seconds))
    2. although all data file are on the file share, the hyper-v host still reads each file from file share, then write to another file on the same file share. It consumes significant network bandwidth. Can they offload the work to file server?
The expected result is that Hyper-V offload the transfer to file share server. It should not create huge amount of network io.
    3. The merging operation is incredibility slow. around 24MByte/sec data being copied.
The hyper-v has 2xgigabit links, benchmark shows the file share access can easily go 200Mbytes/sec, and the file server side is SSD drive with 200+MByte/sec bandwidth. The expected result is if hyper-v ever merge, the speed is least 100MByte/s and hopefully
go up to 200MByte/sec.  21MB/s is just painfully slow.
    Did I miss anything?

Thanks for the info. Even there may be use cases where merge is necessary, there are plenty of use cases where merging is overkill -- can Hyper-V have a CLI option that deletes VM without doing merging?
If such option won't be available soon, can SCVMM do this on deleting a VM:
    1. revert to the latest checkpoint, delete the checkpoint
    2. repeat the step 1 until all checkpoint removed.
    3. delete the VM.
This workaround avoids the Hyper-V's merging. It is not as clean as VMWare's (they just delete the VM files, no extra merge), but at least it is much faster and less resource consumption than merging.

  • Entries in clustering log for DFSR checkpoints

    Hi,
I am looking through our cluster logs trying to rule out errors and I notice a repeat instance of this error for all of the cluster disks every 5 minutes:
ERR   [RHS] Error 161 from ResourceControl for resource Cluster Disk 80
This seems to be related to other behavior happening at the same time related to DFSR. What I think is happening is that DFSR resource is checking the validity of the path on each physical disk until it finds the one the replicated folder is on (the last
entry) and then tries to create the checkpoint file which already exists. Does anyone know why it keeps scanning through all the disks and not just the relevant disk? Also is there a way to stop it spamming the log with this information every 5 minutes if
it is normal behaviour? This is happening on all our nodes and resource groups with DFSR configured.
Note I have truncated the GUIDs:

    Hi DH84,
Please offer us more information about your current cluster configuration, such as the event cluster occur, the server edition,
please disable RSS, TCP Chimney on both cluster nodes RSS, NetDMA to narrow down the issue first.
If you are using 2008R2 cluster please confirm you have installed the following hotfix,
Slow failover operation if no router exists between the cluster and an application server

  • CheckPoints with Sequence containers - Please help

    Hi experts,
I have a very critical requirement using checkpoints.I have SSIS 2012.
As you can see, there are two sequence containers (Call it as SEQC). SEQC1 has Execute SQL tasks 1 , 2 and 3. Similarly SEQC2 has tasks  4,5 and 6.
After that two individual tasks task 7 & 8.
The requirement is, I have to implement both CheckPoint and Transaction feature in the package. That means, the restartability should be BLOCK wise. ie
    1) If the task 3 (inside SEQc1) fails, then the tasks done by the Task1 and task2 should be rolled back and next execution should start from the Task1 and NOT from the Task3.
    2) If the SEQC1 is success, but the task 6 (inside SEQc2) fails, then the tasks done by the SEQC1 should be COMMITTED and tasks done by the Task4 and task5 should be rolled back  and next execution SHOULD start from the Task4 and NOT from the Task6 or
    NOT from Task1 of SEQC1.
    3) If the SEQC1 and SEQC2 succeeds but the next individual task Task7 fails, then SEQC1 and SEQC2 tasks should be committed and the next execution starts only from the Task7.
Could you please tell me is it possible to combine  CheckPoint and transaction options? If not, any workarounds?
Requirements 1 and 2 can be achieved ONLY when i enable'Transactions=Required' in SEQC 1 and 2 . But when I enable this, if the task6 in SEQC2 fails, the the next execution starts from task1 of SEQC1, but the requirement is to start from task4 of SEQC2.
I tried a lot but not able to accomplish this.Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    From Books online
Using checkpoints and transactions in the same package could cause unexpected results. For example, when a package fails and restarts
from a checkpoint, the package might repeat a transaction that has already been successfully committed.
That being said you can use checkpoints and make it start from failed step. However I dont think you'll be able to start from start of the sequence generator as other tasks previously successful would have already logged the info to checkpoint file so they
    will not get executed again.

  • Another 'Checkpoint not complete' case ....

    Hi;
I getting some 'Checkpoint not complete' in log alert. This is not frecuently, however I understand this is not good.
my DB is Oracle 10G, RAC, two nodes.
I executed the next query, but I'm not clear how to determine the redo logs files size.
Can anybody explain me, if these values are OK?
    SQL> set linesize 200
    SQL> select * from v$log;
    GROUP# THREAD# SEQUENCE# BYTES MEMBERS ARC STATUS FIRST_CHANGE# FIRST_TIM
    1 1 8630 52428800 1 NO CURRENT 1320381521 16-MAR-10
    2 1 8629 52428800 1 YES INACTIVE 1320220450 16-MAR-10
    3 2 11341 52428800 1 NO CURRENT 1320386723 16-MAR-10
    4 2 11340 52428800 1 YES INACTIVE 1320242239 16-MAR-10
Also, I executed the next query that somebody sent me, but the optimal size is empty.
    SQL> SELECT TARGET_MTTR,ESTIMATED_MTTR,WRITES_MTTR,WRITES_LOGFILE_SIZE, OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE FROM V$INSTANCE_RECOVERY;
    TARGET_MTTR ESTIMATED_MTTR WRITES_MTTR WRITES_LOGFILE_SIZE OPTIMAL_LOGFILE_SIZE
    0 16 0 13413
As I explained previuosly, this problem is not frecuently, occurs two times in month, but my DB is not used at full capacity, but sometimes is experiencing some slowness, I don't know if fixing this, can help to solve this problem.
I was reading this thread, Checkpoint not complete but still I'm confused.
    These are my doubts;
How can I determine the exact redo log files, I got now? I think is 2, but I'm not sure.
If I want to change that, to increase the redo size, how can I do that?
Does the DB needs to be shutdown to change this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards;
    ANG

How can I determine the exact redo log files, I got now? I think is 2, but I'm not sure. You have 4 redo log groups, with 1 redologfile per group.
    select member from v$logfile;
If I want to change that, to increase the redo size, how can I do that? You can resize the redolog file size by, Checking here

Does the DB needs to be shutdown to change this?Nope. The database can be online.

  • When does capture/pump/replicat process do a checkpoint?

    Dear Guru,
May someone help me to know when capture/pump/replicat process does a checkpoint? There are 2 things which made me confused.
    - CHECKPOINTSECS parameter: There is no setting in the parameter file, that means it will be set by default (10s)
    - One document says that checkpoints are based on transaction boundaries, that means checkpoint will happened by the end of each transaction
In my source db, there was a long running transaction lasting for 1 hour and already committed and written to the local trail files. Then the pump process have started to read the trail files to pump to target. My concern is when the capture/pump/replicat process do a checkpoint? 10s or 1 hour?
One thing is I often see the value of "Time since chkpt" in the output of "Info all" command is more than 10s. If they do a checkpoint every 10s, how could the value of "Time since chkpt" be more than 10s? I think that maybe the term "chkpt" of "Time since chkpt" is of database transaction, not of GoldenGate. However I'm not sure. It made me really confused.
Here is the output of "Info all" command:
Program Status Group Lag Time Since Chkpt
    EXTRACT RUNNING PUMP6 00:17:07 00:04:29
    My system profile:
    Source:
    OS: OEL5 64bit
    DB: Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.2)
    GG: 11gR1 (11.1)
    Target:
    OS: Solaris 10
    DB: Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.3)

Thanks for your help in advance.

CHECKPOINTSECS defines how often an extract makes its regular checkpoints. An extract will make a checkpoint every 10 seconds if this value is set to 10 irrespective of a transaction that is running for 1 hour. Extract also writes commit checkpoints when a transaction is committed.
In the example where your Pump is showing time since checkpoint as greater than 10 could have a problem at the network level or issues with the remote trail..
that is my observation as I had an extract that was being shown as RUNNING but time since last checkpoint was in hours and when i checked the report file, it had an error.

  • Get More Info for NetConnection.Connect.Failed Error?

I have a single server that runs IIS and FMS, both on port 80.  The server has two internal IPs assigned to it, one for IIS and the other for FMS.  I also have two static public IPs.  My router maps one public IP to IIS' internal IP and likewise for FMS.
IIS works fine.  Using an online port scanner, I was able to determine that port 80 is responsive for both public IPs.  Before I had configured my Adapter.xml and fms.ini, only IIS' public IP was responsive.  This seems to indicate that FMS is fine.
However, when my ActionScript creates a NetConnection and calls connect(), my netStatus callback takes about half a minute to be invoked, and I get "NetConnection.Connect.Failed".  Which is not very informative.  Is there a way to get more info about the cause of the error?  Also does anyone have suggestions for how to debug this issue?

    Hi,
    Thanks for trying out FMS..
I can guide you with few checkpoints to first see where the problem might be.
    1. Go to the FMS installation directory and check for the logs folder. See all the logs (according to date) and find if the port bindings are all successful. This might tell us whether FMS actually has started or not.
    2. FMS works on port 1935 for RTMP streaming. It also gets bundled with apache (listening on 8134) but one of the fms processes also takes hold of 80 for its tunneling streaming as well as redirecting to apache. So either you remove this entry from fms.ini or change it to reflect to some other port. ADAPTER.HOSTPORT is the variable to look for.
    3. How are you making sure that FMS is working/not working ?
    4. Please turn off your firewall or other secutiry for testing purposes to see if you are able to hit the FMS .
Let us know if any of the above are helpful in getting some more information.
    Thank you !

Any suggestions on what to do?
    J

ASE tracks the free space available on each segment in memory.
If the server is shut down politely, ASE can store the current values on disk and retrieve them at startup.  However, if the server is shutdown abruptly (shutdown with nowait, crash, power failure, kill -9, etc.) the free space figures don't get written out.  In that case ASE has to recalculate the free space values by reading all the allocation pages or OAM pages in the database.  On a big database, that can take time.
    Your main choices are to
    1) wait it out
    2) set the "no freespace accounting" database option and reboot
Disabling free-space accounting for data segments
While recovery will be much faster with freespace accounting turned off, there are side effects such as unexpected 1105 errors (no free space...) and thresholds not firing as expected.  In general I'd advise waiting it out and trying to avoid the use of "shutdown with nowait" going forward (which may or may not be what brought the server down, but it is the main cause you can control).

  • Gatekeeper to gatekeeper through a Checkpoint FW

Has anyone established communications through Checkpoint FW NG R55 without using the service "any"? I am trying to establish external IP videoconferencing through a FW but can not get it to work without using the "any" service.
    Thanks

This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with Gatekeeper.  Gatekeeper simply prevents certain kinds of apps from opening.  You should set Gatekeeper back to the default (middle) setting for the best balance of safety and flexibility.
What is the extension at the end of the problem files' names?  Is it .jpg or .jpeg, or is it something else, or is it missing entirely?  (Note that you may need to select the file and choose File -> Get Info in order to see the full filename with the extension, as extensions can be hidden.)

  • An error occures during discovery checkpoint in Cisco MARS

    Hello,
I am trying to add checkpoint firewall NGX R65 to Cisco MARS. Certificate was pulled successfully from checkpoint. But discovery doesn't work
When I start "Discovery" I get the message - "Error occured while discovering device". When I am choosing "View error" I see the message - "There is no Error Log for this Device".
As I understand this issue doesn't mean ok with discovery.
Could you tell me what can I see if discovery will be ok?
Is it obligatory to add route info?
Is it obligatory to add snmp?
Which is checkpoint OPSEC should I use for R65? Are NG AI or NG FP3 or NGX?
    I use  NGX.
I would be gratefully if you help me.
    Thank you in advance

As long as you just need to collect/analyse logs from your FW you don't have to "Discover" the device. Just click 'Next' and 'Submit' to add device.
