Chirping HD noise with XP

Hello,
I bought a Macbook about a month ago and decided to install Windows XP by Bootcamp partition. While XP works fine in my machine, I get a little worried about this chirping sound the (I suppose) HD makes when I'm using it. I decided to delete the partition and the chirping vanished a day after that, but I still had it when I was on Leopard during that time.
As a former PC user, I have grown accustomed to hear these sounds whenever my hardware is stressing out and I associated this with a problem with the HD or memory, because it usually appears after a couple of years or accidents. Now that after deleting XP and restoring my HD I don't hear this noise anymore, I am wondering... Should I install XP anyways? Would this sound -apart from being annoying- mean any harm to my computer?
I ask this because there's a few applications that I MUST run that aren't available for Mac (Audition, vvvv, etc.). Please, if you can, advice me on this and tell me if this is just paranoia or what. Thanks in advance.

@weksi,
You can try playing those videos using a different media player to see if those high pitch sound are caused by VLC. Do note that those high pitch sound could also be due to the video file itself. You can try playing the video file on another device or computer to see if that is the case.

  • IMac g5 fan noise with update to 10.4.11

    Has anyone else experienced this?
I have never had any problems with fan noise with my iMac, though I know it's a problem, till the recent update to 10.4.11. After restarting, it sounded like an airplane. Never heard that before. I shut it down and restarted, and it doesn't sound like a plane anymore, but the fan is noticeably noisier than ever before, a constant whine/hum.
Besides the energy saver fix and resetting the SMU and canned gas in the vents, any other suggestions? This is annoying, it's been running pretty perfect for three years till this. Thanks.

The questions are certainly not dumb - almost anywhere is cheaper than Apple for RAM, I recommend [macsales.com] and [smalldog.com] or [newegg.com]. I don't think that going back to 10.4.10 will help, you should really vacuum the vents to get dust out, and make sure that there's nothing hogging your CPU and making the fans noisy, look at Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor to see if anything is using an unusual amount of memory or CPU.
If you do want to install Leopard, I would suggest making a full backup of your system,I use SuperDuper! to clone my system to a firewire external drive. You should certainly upgrade your RAM if you install Leo, but I don't think your machine will be any quieter with a new OS.
You need to remember that your machine is several years old, and that things get creaky with age (I certainly have). Since you have the iSight, it's not a simple matter to open it and clean the fans off. If you are really disturbed by the noise, you can take it in to an Apple service place and have them clean and oil the fans, which should help enormously.
Sorry I couldn't offer more help, but fans will, and do, get noisy.

  • How to minimize noise with 1127/1331 setup?

    Hello,
I've correctly configured my 1127 multiplexer switch with the 1331 terminal block.  I've attached BNC to 2-wire adapters through which I'm routing precisely controlled DC levels.  My problem is that I'm getting emf noise with the signal and suspect that it's being coupled through the two-wire pairs at the 1331 terminal block.
Is there a terminal block that I may attach to the front of the 1127 that has coaxial (BNC or SMA) adapters so that I may minimize this source of noise?  I note that the BNC2095 product is not explicitly compatable with my SCXI 1127.
Thanks if anyone knows anything or has successfully dealt with this issue.
    -Michael

    Hi mkelley,
I've looked into this issue, and have some questions for you. What is the form factor that you need for this switch? Does the switch need to be SCXI, or do you have an available PXI slot for the switch? Are you using Switch Executive to make these routes?
It doesn't look like there is a BNC option for the 1127, however there may be other options for this cable type. The SCXI-1193 will give BNC connectivity for the matrix, using a MCX to BNC cable to connect the signal. I am confirming that this would be the correct option for you, as the SCXI-1193 matrix configuration will be a sparse matrix. I will follow up with you when I have more information.

  • Background noise with i pod dock connection

Just wondering if anyone has had problems with a background noise with the bottom dock connection even when i'm not having it playing any music. and it doesn't matter if its in my truck or at my house ever dock connector piece of equipment has had this problem. i have no problem with background noise if i use my headphone jack. just wondering if this is something that can be fixed. and if it is hardware or software issues right now it seems more like a hardware issue.
    thanks

    Hi mate
    What notebook do you have?
Music maker premium 17 is not known to me and I cannot say anything about this application but you should check if this issue can be related to notebook or to this special software. Maybe you should test it with other software.
Furthermore I would recommend checking the sound settings.
My notebook support Realtek sound driver in control panel -> Realtek HD audio manager you can change many settings check this if this is available.

  • 13" MBP chirping, buzzing noise! anyone else?

Tomorrow is my last day for replacement of my 13" MBP which has chirping buzzing noise around esc button!
Today, I went to Apple Store again and tried to listen the other 13" MBP to make sure that they also have the same noise. And yes, they all have that annoying noise as well...
I really do not understand, why people who has 13" MBPs are saying "Our computers are deadly quite!"

I returned my macbook pro 13", even there was the restocking fee that is $139.
I am happier now, and I do not buy a macbook or macbook pro unless they do solve the all whining problems completely... My 4 years old HP still deadly quite, but needs ram...

  • Histogram of Gaussian White Noise with NI5112

I am digitizing some random gaussian white noise with a NI-PXI 5112. The problem is that even with very high number of samples (1 Mega sample) the distribution presents a lot of periodic pikes when making a voltage histogram (either with built in function or by postprocessing data with Mathematica).
I am using two synchronized digitizers and they both have the same behaviour (pikes symmetric around 0 and with periodicity), but give different response from one another.
I already tried to filter the data, change the vertical range of both aquisition and generation devices, but the pikes always appear at the same relative values, and with the same relative number of counts.
How can I overcome this problem ?

Could you post a screenshot of your histogram? How many bins do you have in your histogram?
Remember that the 5112 is an 8-bit boards so you only have (in the order of) 256 possible values so unless you 'hit' the exact values your bins will have un-equal weights. This could result in the periodic behavior you are observing.

  • Horrible noise with error 5100, MX700

After error 5100, I have tried resetting the printer, cleaning the tape, clearing any jams.  No luck.  Assoon as I turn on the unit, I get a horrible gear stripping noise with the error message; ink cartridges do not appear when I open the top.  They are hiding over on the left.

    Hello MWMarchitect.
Please try the following to see if we can resolve your issue:
    1.  Turn the printer off.
    2.  Unplug the power from the printer for at least 5-10 minutes.

  • Digital noise with digi 02

Can't understand why I'm getting this digital clipping noise with my digi 02. I'm running a macbook with all the latest logic express and digi updates. Could I be missing a firmware or an update?

B, is the right one. I think it's something with
protools core audio. The next thing I might try is
    installing protools 7.3. Thanks
    Hi Phil,
Due to not knowing your exact setup, like what version of Digi Core Audio, proTools, Logic, etc... I will hesitate to say exactly what is wrong.
You stated that clipping type "B" is what you are getting:
    B. Is the clipping happening at the same spots along the playback of the
    song?
If this IS the case, and you can hear the clipping at the SAME spot in the song, then your problems might be related to the Buffer setting, or maybe the version of the Digi Core Audio Manager and driver software.
What version of Digi Core Audio are you running? There have been several bugs with it for the last year, but all have been addressed in the latest version. I'm on version 7.3.1cs1 on my Intel MacBook Pro, and do not get any kind of clipping or distortion. Once PT and Logic are set up properly, it runs like a dream, so don't despair. I've been on my current setup for three years. The only time I got issues was when updating the OSX, and after updating Digi software, no more issues. so now, I ma usually one or two OSX versions behind, to be safe.
Cheers, and let me know more details on your set-up, so we can pinpoint the issue, and solve it.

I have the same problem with the new drivers. Whenever I change modes, I get a quiet hissing noise until I mute the microphone/line-in inputs. This happens even with no mic plugged in, and the hissing occurs whether the input is muted or not - merely changing it, one way or another, will fix it. The problem was definitely not present in previous [email protected]

  • T60p - Chirping noise with CPU power management

I've bought a T60p which produces a chirping noise when running on battery. The high frequency noise is disturbing when working with the device, especially in silent surroundings.
I've already contacted the Lenovo Support and they advised me to turn off CPU power management in the BIOS which indeed removes the noise. However, the cost is a significantly reduced battery time.
First the Lenovo guys offered me a high capacity battery to compensate the shorter run time but then they refused and stated that my computer "works as designed" and that "Lenovo doesn't accept warranty".
I can't believe that this is true. IBM and the ThinkPads have been recognized for their excellent quality and customer service for many years. That's why I bought a TP despite it was way more expensive than other Notebooks. Is Lenovo really not interested in keeping the excellent reputation that IBM formerly had? I'd be very interested in a statement of a Lenovo official on this issue...

    > every CD/C2D processor makes this noise regardless of notebook manufacturer.
Nope, not every. There are C2D ThinkPads and other manufacturer notebooks without this defect. Sometimes noise level is higher, sometimes lower, sometimes completely silent if you are lucky enough...
amaso, I have the same problem on my brand new T60p, and found a better solution. Try to download RMClock and disable PopUp mode in CPU advanced settings. This eliminated the noise for me and power management still is working.

  • My CD/DVD drive keeps making noises with no disc inserted

My computer's CD/DVD drive makes the noise of it trying to pull in a disc whenver my computer is sat down or squeezed slightly from being picked up. I'm not sure why it keeps doing this. Is there anything wrong with it? Or is it just a little too sensitive?

Yes and no, the computer is obviously physically triggering the disk catch which may mean it's got a loose screw or something similar. It's advisable one way or the other to have it looked at or look at it yourself, the mechanism for the drive should be visible by removing the keyboard.

  • How do I eliminate the delay in reducing background noise with each new clip?

My microphones pick up a fair amount of background nosie.  At 60% reduction with iMovie's built in editor it sounds perfect.  The only problem is that it takes about .5 seconds to go from zero reduction to 60%.  If this were only at the start of the new movie, that would be fine.  But this occurs at every new clip.  I'm editing together a long series of short, ten second clips...so there is a distracting hissing of background noise once every ten seconds.  Any help on this would be great.

  • Cracks and Noises with Channel-Strips in L 7.2 and MacBook Pro 17"

I am using a MBP 17" and have "performance-problems": when I choose a single Channel-Strip (like "11 Ethnic/Breathy Harp"), the performance-control shows only one CPU working near 90% (the right one) and I'm hearing cracks and noises. I've tried without Fireface (intern) - same problem. I can't believe, that this "incredible machine" isn't able to run one single Channel-Strip at a time without problems!!!
    Anyone ideas?

Hi Marty, thanks for your imidiate reply! Though your information about sculpture is very helpful I unfortunately have the same problem with CST like "01 Pianos/Concert Hall Grand Piano" wich is from the exs24 instrument. A further problem is, that the performance control in logic show just one cpu working while the other indicator does nothing. I compared to the performance control of MacOS: there the indicator show both CPUs are working - strange, isn't it?

  • Display Problem - Video noise with 15" Powerbook and 23" Studio Display

I just bought a used 23" Studio Display to act as a second monitor for my 1.0 GHz 15" Powerbook. In my set up, the display is rather noisy -- there are consistant flickering lines of white pixels throughout the display. The lines are worst in dark areas, though they may just be showing up under contrast. The Powerbook it is connected to still looks normal.
The first strange thing is that the display works perfectly with another 1.25 GHz 15" Powerbook I have to test it on. In both cases, I have connected the monitor to the Powerbooks with a new Apple brand powered DVI to ADV Adapter.
The second strange thing is that the display seemed to act fine until I reinstalled my Wacom tablet driver so that it would work with dual displays. I've uninstalled the driver, but it the problem is still there.
The third strange thing is that the display is fine while booting up. The blue boot up screen is very crisp looking and noiseless. It only starts showing noise when the login screen shows up.
Any thoughts about what may be causing the problem or how to fix it would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    angus.
    Powerbook 15" G5 dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   23" studio display

Well I called AppleCare yesterday and, believe it or not, we actually got the USB ports acting normally - well at least I can boot up with the keyboard plugged into the back of the monitor.
They had me reset the Open Firmware and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, the night before I updated to 10.4.10 so that may have had something to do with it, too. No idea.
As for the power sensor button thing, they wanted me to plug the monitor into a different system, either at a Genius Bar or a friend or whatnot to see if it would behave in the same manner - not wanting to activate. I took it to school with me and hooked it up to one of my teacher's G5 and it behaved the same way. It took like 15 times touching the sensor to bring the system up.
So I'll be calling them back and see where they want to go with this. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a new shiny monitor - or not...
