Chopping Up Video In Compressor

I work for a church which produces weekly services that need to be distributed in various formats. We use Final Cut Studio as well as Final Cut Server. With the copyright restrictions we have several different cuts of the service have to be produced.
For DVD and Live Streaming, we can use a cut of the entire service.
For Vimeo, we have to cut out all the live music.
For Youtube, we have to cut the live music and chop it into 10 minute segments.
I am trying to automate the process as much as possible, so we can make one cut, add makers and send it to Compressor from FCP. Compressor would then chop it up, compress it and send it the the correct location.
All the documentation I have found mentions nothing about being able to segment a video. Is there a way to do this? We have programmers, could Apple Script help? Additional software?
It would be an enormous time savings.
Thanks,
Austin

Automating the process may be a bit of a challenge, but you can use In and Out points to define a section of the source media you want to encode. You can import the same source multiple times and define different in and out points for each instance...that may satisfy your YouTube requirements.
You need to create a source though that doesn't have the live music because you can not enable and disable individual tracks in Compressor. It's either all on or all off.

  • How to resize the video in Compressor?

Hi all, my first post here,
I just know  we can't optionaly resize the video in Final Cut Pro and
using the compressor can resovle this problem,
It's not very convenient to resize the video in FCP.
i wanna ask how can i  resize the video in compressor
    Thanks a lot

First, you should carefully think why you'd need to resize. You can export from FCP X to the standard sizes, both HD and SD. Do you really need some nonstandard size?
Keep in mind that usually you'll get the best quality if you edit in the desired final size, rather than resizing afterwards.
If you do need to create a video in some nonstandard size, like, say 1080x1920 (i.e. in "portrait" form), there is a way to do it:
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/payton_t/FCPX_Custom-Resolution-Timeline s/video-tutorial
With Compressor you have many pre-made defaults for different kinds of devices. Also, you can export to Quicktime and tweak the settings to get a desired size.
1-Drag one of the existing settings (in the example below, I used SD 480p)
    2-Select it
3-In the Inspector, select the "Geometry" tab
4-Choose "Custom" and enter the desired size.
5-Change the other properties (such as codec, under the "Encoder" tab), as needed
5-Choose "Save As..." and save it (give a suggestive name, say "Portrait") so that you can later reuse it as needed.

  • Cropping 16:9 video in Compressor for output in 3GPP format

    Hi all,
We need to regularly batch convert video for a client, from a 16:9 original to 3GPP's 176x144 ratio by cropping and resizing in Compressor. However, when setting up the encoding settings for 3GPP output, the Geometry fields are greyed out, meaning I can't crop the edges from the original.
The current workaround is to output the file first as an M-Peg (cropping it at this stage), and then re-encode that file in the 4 different 3GPP versions we need.
The question is, is there a better way to do this? Can I force the crop to take place at the same time as it's encoded to 3GPP, or, if we're stuck with a 2-stage encoding process, can I make Compressor automatically begin the re-encoding of the M-Peg file to 3GPP, as soon as the initial transcoding is complete (AppleScript, Automator?)
    Thanks

So, if I drop in my source, add an MPEG-2 preset (120 minute video) and then modify the aspect ratio drop down to 16:9, is there anything else I need to do to get the same result as the 16:9 preset in Compressor 2?
There shouldn't be anything else you need to do.
By the way, it should automatically detect aspect ratio (via the anamorphic flag in DV/SD QT files) but I suppose setting it manually couldn't hurt.

  • Problem exporting video using compressor for a final cut pro vid

I've created a video in Final Cut Pro and trying to export using compressor to apple tv. Each time about half way through it crashes final cut and gives me the 'final cut pro had to quit unexpectedly'.
Haven't a clue what is going on, it happened sometimes when i was trying to conform to HD but when i did it bit by bit it was ok.
All the media is online so really haven't a clue. I've tried using quicktime conversion in pro-res then bashing into compressor and it works but interlacing is all over the shop, even with de-interlace filter.
ANy answers with regards to why its crashing greaty appreciated!
P.S when it crashes says something about a pro-core plugin

    Hi Jim,
Can you update your profile, we don't know what your hardware set up is or your OS, or version of FCS. It could give you answers a lot faster if we know your details from the off.
Ok, what format is your original media, what are your sequence settings please.

  • How do I avoid or get rid of thin green line bordering my video in Compressor?

    Hello!
    This is my work flow:
Edited an 18 minute 1920 x 1080 ProRes video on FCP 7, exported a master video file ProRes 422 self-contained QT movie, sent to Compressor (tried Best DVD 90-minutes and ProRes codec settings) to prepare files for a SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
My issue:  I am getting a THIN GREEN LINE bordering my entire video on the Compressor file.
My master video file is perfect, no green line, however once it's gone through Compressor (tried both Best DVD 90 minutes and ProRes codec settings) the video has a thin green line that I can see in the DVD Studio Pro preview and simulation.  The burned DVD also has it.
I would like to author the work in DVD Studio Pro as it is a looping video work for exhibition so I have the video file 6 times on the DVD rather than have it re-start at first track every time.
Seems like it has to do with downscaling the 1920 x 1080 video to SD for DVD.
Searched the web and there doesn't seem to be a clear explanation for it besides this discussion about 16s but doesn't clarify in regards to the problem downscaling to SD DVD.
Thanks so much to anyone with the magic answers!

    >prepare files for a SD DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
My issue:  I am getting a THIN GREEN LINE bordering my entire video on the Compressor file.

    PAL - 1080 / 576 = 1,875
    NTSC - 1080 / 480 = 2,25
DVDs are standard definition, so your original file has to be compressed to those pixel dimensions. As you can see above the number of HD horizontal lines don't divide by an even number into SD horizontal lines, so you get partial lines left over that the TV system doesn't really know how to interpret - that's the green bit.

  • Howto add adiuo track to video in Compressor

I exported video from Final Cut to Compressor for burning on DVD, after I deleted source files in FCP. Now I have 2 separate files with video and audio, how can I convert them to one file for iPod?
If I add both files to Compressor it creates two separate jobs, is there any option to add audio track to video?

    Interesting problem....
If you've created a DVD (or VIDEO_TS) you can use an app like DVDxDV (www.dvdxdv.com) to create a QT movie from the source.
    or
You can transcode the AC3 file to an AIFF 48k/16 pcm file in Compressor, and then transcode the MPEG-2 video stream to whatever I-Frame codec you want to work with (DV, ProRes, etc). Next, take those two files into FCP and sync, or use QT Pro's "Add to Movie" command and Save As a self-contained movie.

  • How to compress a 120 VDV video with compressor?

hello, I would like to know how to compress a video more than 2hours on a DVD of 8.5G

    Just to add:
Essentially the same steps that I gave for FCP>Share would be followed in Compressor, except you would select the job in the Batch window and then go to the jobs action tab. (An advantage of using Compressor is that you could insert chapter markers.)

  • Jagged video with compressor encoding

This question runs parallel with an earlier one I have posted re quicktime encoding.
I have submitted a 47 min timeline to compressor for encoding to mpeg 2. The resulting file imported to DVDS is jagged with movement of subject or camcorder. The 2 cameras used are a sony SD and a Sony Hd exporting as SD, both inputs are affected. This is a process I have been successful with over a number of years so do not see what I can be doing wrong. I have uninstalled and reinstalled FCP Studio 5.1 plus all the updates, tossed the FCP Studio ID file and re registered but to no avail. I have encoded as Pal, Bottom file as it should be but tried both top and auto with no change.
Blaming Leopard, after which I have had problems with my 5 year old mac I have, on an external drive, installed OS 10.4.9 and FCP Studio 5.1 and all the updates ( ten in number), again with no improvement.
    Any suggestions?

Thanks for the response Olse. As I put in my query, I used an HDV cam but, as sony describes it, I used the i.Link Convert feature to convert to DV format. I have checked the Browser window in FCP and get the following information for all clips. Vid rate 26 fps: Compressor DV-Pal: Data rate 3.5 MB/sec: Pixel aspect Pal-CCIR 601: FIELD DOMINANCE Lower (even). Which seems to be pretty conclusive.
Perhaps I should have signed myself as "old aging workhorse" being in my eighties, so have seen the world moving forward. While knowing that an upgrade is desirable I find a pension and other needs very restrictive. I bought my first Apple almost 26 years ago as a retirement hobby, but achieving good video has always been an ambition. It looks as if my granddaughter will have to wait a while longer for her wedding video.

  • Poor quality video from compressor

This is very basic, so please bear with me. I used  Share from Final Cut Pro X, using mpeg 2 for dvd (I have Compressor installed, but it did this without opening it). Everything renders well, but on playback in QT, the edges of the video are serated, which is quite a let down considering the footage is HD. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what I am doing wrong?
    All best
    Jem

Hey Tom, thanks for that info. I agree about DVD being an attenuating medium, but my parents, 90 and 93, couldn;t really view their grandson on another medium! However, I am still puzzled as to why the image is fine in FCP, but interlacing when compressed for DVD, but I am presuming that this is just the codec.

  • Help!!! No audio with video after compressor

I have a huge 2 hour edited video that I am trying to compress into a DVD. I am using compressor and when I do this it does everything I need except i get no audio when I play the compressed video. I am new to compressor and I need to know how to get this 2 hour video to a DVD. I am using the DVD pro app to put it to DVD and if anyone else knows of a better way to get 2 hours on a DVD let me know, I need to get this done in the next week. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

When Compressing for DVD, you need to make to separate files, which you will then combine in DVDSP.
    .m2v for video
    .ac3 for audio

  • How to achieve good non-interlaced video using compressor (newbie question)

    Dear all,
I am completely at sea but I know that I have to use the "none" setting for the field order and cannot for the life of me work this out.
Now- I usually export direct from Final Cut Pro (H.264, best quality etc etc) but this time the exported QT file just will not de-interlace (not my footage but I have to deliver the edit), come **** or high water.
So- a kind soul said to use Compressor... And to not use any field ordering.
But HOW? I watched videos, sought to use the instructions given me here but am still totally lost.
    What I did:
    1. Launched Compressor,
    2. Dragged in the self-contained reference QT file from my desktop,
    3. Picked a setting (H.264 which has field reordering ON by default),
    4. Dropped the "setting" into the blue field to right of clip thumb,
    5. Double-clicked the "setting" and then-
    6. picked the "Encoder" button, as instructed but cannot change the Field Order.
Because Compressor is completely new to me I don't know if I ought to NOT pick a setting until I have it how I want it, saved it as a "custom setting" and THEN bring it into the project or if I am to do it once brought in to the project. Either way- how to change the field order to "none". Or should I pick a de-interlace filter? Just that I have been looking and testing and nothing I do creates a de-interlaced final file.
All the tutorial videos I have watched (erm- about 5 now) go over exporting and how to pick your settings from those which exist but what I need to know is how to change a setting to suit (ie get rid of the evil interlacing).
I am hoping someone here can give me a very simple step by step or point me in the direction of one.

Let me see if I can wrap my head around what you're trying to do. You started with an HD timeline 1280 x 720 (16:9). Into this you want to add your SD PAL clips, shrunk down for a picture in picture effect (a completely different concept from multicam.) But your shrunk down clips have nasty interlacing, and the one clip which was meant to be full frame looks like rubbish, right? Sorry but there's no way to blow a clip up 180% and have it look even halfway decent. At least not in FCP. Compressor has an upscale algorithm, available in the same Frame Controls tab where you did the de-interlacing, which can give you somewhat better results. There's also a plug-in from Red Giant called Instant HD which may or may not yield better results than Compressor.
Here's where you went wrong. The clips to be shrunk should have been deinterlaced before bringing them into FCP, and into your sequence. Go ahead and do this, using the ProRes 422 setting, with the deinterlacing technique from before.
Your sequence in FCP is fine, except that you want to change its compressor to ProRes 422 so that it matches your newly imported de-interlaced clips.
You want to de-interlace your P2 1080i clips beforehand as well. The other change to make to your sequence is to change Field Dominance to None.
If you've already finished your edit, you can still do all of the de-interlacing, outputting all of the results to a new folder. But you have to do every source clip in its entirety if you want to re-link to retain your edit.
When Compressor's done - this will probably take all night - open your FCP project, select all the source clips, right-click and choose Reconnect Media. Locate the newly de-interlaced ProRes clips and Connect.
Then you only need to export your sequence as a Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. This will give you a pristine master which will play fine on your computer, and from which you may then use Compressor to create a web or dvd version as needed.

  • Why does my 40 minute movie become a 7 hour video in compressor?

I've made a final cut HD movie about 41 minutes in length.  When I send it to compressor I have to wait many hours while Compressor does it's magic.  The reason for the unreasonable time is that it is compressing a 7 hour plus file rather then the 40 minute movie sent to Compressor.  When the compressed file is sent to DVD Studio Pro I have to drag a 7 hour timeline down to 40 minutes of actual video/audio files.  In Final Cut the sequence time line is only 40 minutes long and I can not find why this relatively short movie becomes so long when dispatched to Compressor.  Any solutions?

Open your project and hit Shift Z. See whether there is any file beyond 40 minutes on the Time Line,
Take the Range tool and do a selection around your movie in the Time Line, In Share, choose Master File and save.
Open that file in Quick Time and it will be 40 minutes. Bring that file into Compressor for whatever encoding job you need.
    Good luck.

    Help

Hi Bill, again just trawling these forums in search of another prolem solution and ran over your post. I'm not sure if every problem reported in these forums requires removing the app's preferences or running a third party product that does it as well.. Sometimes it will work. Usually there's a process somewhere in Compressor or its subcomponents used in the OS that need to kicked in the arse or terminated and restarted or is handed a flawed structure it can't handle entirely and fails.
These failures are sometime echoed in /var/logs/folder/... or ~/Library/Logs/"this_application's.log" or ~/Library/LogsDiagnosticReports/"this_application's" dump. Yep u can view these with the /Applications/Utilities/Console.app or jump in to Qmaster through the Share Monitor.app as well.
Anyway not all these events get logged so sometimes it's difficult to know where to look especially with compressor and qmaster. Qmaster has its logs also in a temproary place then then are magically moved to /var/logs.
A good practice is to see if you can determine one of these flaws before getting the chainsaw and axe out for a "hack and bash session". Chances are you will have this again.
Elsewhere in these Apple Support forums and on the creativecow forums is a wealth of knowledge on compressor or Qmaster and other products. Always worth a simple Google search
Now, I'd propose that is likely that the current structure used by compressor and qmaster are in a less than optimum state!. Most of these are rebuilt if they are removed. All except the SETTINGS and LAYOUTS. So if you have any of your own settings, layouts or destinations and you dont want to lose them, go and make a second instance of these else where of fetch and reinstate them from Timemachine.app once you have restarted everthing after some suggestion I'm going to propose to you shortly.
The probable sources of state information may be deleted and Compressor and Qmaster can be started again. However before embarking on this easy walkthrough ......
Step 1: Stop Apple Qmaster your current host. (Compressor.app/Application Menu Apple Qmaster/Share This Computer / Setup tab/ and untick "Share This Computer").
count to 10 slowly and all the compressord tasks will stop. Qmasterd is still active...thats cool.
Step 2: QUIT Compressor.app on your current host.
Step 3: Make a second instance of your Compressor.app Settings , Destinations and Layouts: As stated a tonne of time in so many threads , that in Compressor 4, these structures for Qmaster and some of Compressors have been moved into the users home domain (i.e. ~/) in the ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Settings and ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Layouts directories. If you dont have any then move to the next step....
THerefore simply DUPLICATE or COPY them to another place such as your ~/Desktop. U can use the FINDER or simple unix cli commands such as:
    cp -Rv ~/Library/Application\ Support/Compressor/Settings ~/Desktop
    cp -Rv ~/Library/Application\ Support/Compressor/Layouts ~/Desktop
    Step 4: remove | purge | delete compressors Lion/ML saved state.... ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.Compressor.savedState
You can also remove the the saved state entry for Compressor.app so tha you wont be bothered with it trying to resstablish where it was when it failed or you last quit it.
rm ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/com.apple.Compressor.savedState or just selct and +del it in the trash (hold the OPTION key and select the Finder GO menu to access your homes ~/Library/)
After doing  this you can basically destroy | delete | purge | remove your ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor and also your ~/Library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster directories
OK if you're up to it I will refer you to a post where this procedure is comprehensivley detailed. I'm fairly certain that when you follow this procedure and remove these compressor and Qmaster structure and restart then re-set up any clusters and networking, tha compressor will work amazingly well again.... probably like it used to.
Step 5: click over to ths apple forum post and follow the steps in there. No need to duplicate its contents here. The link is at https://discussions.apple.com/message/17356372#17356372%2317356372
Step n: well if you have returned to here hopefully compressor V4..app with Qmaster is running and its like brand new. 9 of 10 times this is the case.
Basically you have purged your current folders:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor and
    ~/Library/Application Support/Apple Qmaster
Now a few more things to consider as mentioned in the post at https://discussions.apple.com/message/17356372#17356372%2317356372 is not to be too impatient. THese compressor and qmaster components take a little time to communicate and ready themselves. You will be able to see this via teh activity monitor.app and also right-gear-down on the compressor.app icon n the dock. Look for SERVICES. If you only have one, add some more in the qmaster prefs.
ALso make sure you c=can use Compressor.app / File /Mount Cluster Storage and tha you get a voluem for your cluster apearing in the list box.
No volume then qmaster is not set up.
You may have to do all the above again.
Lastly, the NETWORK settings used between hosts for Qmaster are often a point of noise and frustration. If u can disable your network  just to get compressor/qmaster going on a single host. Often  the comms causes a great deal of "waiting"scenarios in Compressor. U can see these in the Share Monitor.app.
Please report back you progress so tha others my benefit..

  • Can I batch stabilize video in compressor?

    Hi there.
I've got about (30) 10 second clips that I need to put some sort of stabalization on. I know how to do this in fcp but I'd have to group all movies in one timeline to do it all at once. Is there a way to do it in compressor (or another program) where I can just make settings for one and batch change them all?
    Thanks in advance,
    Caleb

No. Compressor does not do stabilization.
You need FCP, Motion or AfterEffects.
If you use AE, you can send it to a render farm to do the computations.

  • SYNC  Loss when converting FCP 6.1 Video thru compressor for DVDSP 4

This is an intermittent problem; video is perfect when viewing in FCP or on tape; but there is an intermittent loss when the MPEG-2 ecode is done... any suggestions to correct?
    KGD

So we take it that it's a bug which strenghens the
usual warning: never update your software in the
middle of a big project. Acually the more I look at
FCP 6, the more I wonder if it's worth upgrading...
I have another six months to go on this project, and I love smoothcam, but still....
I'm going to try 6.0.1. If I don't get any satisfaction with that, I am going to go back to 5.1.4, which was working fine. Actually, FCP 6 solved what for me was a huge problem with version 5.1, which involved management of media and clips. Previous to version 6, if I moved a sequence from one nested bin to another one nested in a different bin, FCP silently and without any warning broke ALL links to the master clips in that sequence. FCP 6 has fixed this problem. But created others.....
I will report back to this thread after I try 6.0.1.
