Cisco AP1142N won't join controller

Hi
When upgrading one of our WISM controller cards a problem occurred with some AP1142N.
The can’t join controller with 7.6.120.0, upgrading was from 7.4.121.0
When CLI into the AP I got this messages:
Reboot and tries to connect to the WISM2 with  7.6.120.0, but it fails.
Then tries to connect to another WISM2 with 7.4.121.0 and this work
But then the image on the AP is not correct (have a 7.6.120.0 image)
Downgrading AP to 7.4.121.0 image
Reboot and are back to number 1.

With a WISM, you have by definition an etherchannel between your controller & APs.  Try setting the load balancing algorithm on the switch housing the WISM to src-dst-mac before connecting the AP.  There is/was an issue that shows itself rarely where other load balancing mechanisms interfere with an AP's initial join to a controller.  The problem declined significantly over the years, but you may be running into it.
Once the AP joins, you can reset your load balancing and you shouldn't have the problem even if the AP reboots later.  It usually impacts APs that have never joined your controller.  Don't know why.  Since this was an upgrade it may not be your problem, but it won't hurt to try.

  • New Cisco 1552AP Mesh with 5508 controller version 7.0.116.0

New to working with Wireless and the Cisco Meshing concept so have a few questions to ask.
I currently have the majority of the mesh setup and configured.  I have a setup with two RAPs with 9 MAPS connecting to each RAP.
First question is how many MAPS can connect to a RAP generally?
Secondly how can I block other cisco AP's that are not in my mesh network from trying to connect to my AP's
The below is constantly hammering the logs for 6 devices that are Cisco close to my mesh that are not mine.
    8
    Sat Nov 12 23:31:53 2011
Mesh child node '58:35:d9:aa:db:4f' has changed its parent to mesh node '88:f0:77:b7:c6:e0' from mesh node '88:f0:77:b7:c6:c0'.
Mesh Node '58:35:d9:aa:db:4f' failed to join controller, MAC address not in MAC filter list.
I have only added the MAC addresses of my AP's in to my AP Policy under security.  Would these other AP's affect the mesh in any way?
What I am seeing is the AP's constantly changing the child to parent relationship.  I have inherited this network and they have about 20 AP's all within a square mile which is absolutely overkill.  Would this close proximity of AP's together be the cause for the constant child parent changes?
How close should I have RAP's together.  The network was setup so two raps are about 20 metres apart and the AP's on one side connect to RAP1 and the other to RAP2?
How do you deal with Radar?  The install is pretty much next to an airfield with radar running and a few times I have seen all the AP's disconnect and change channels.
These are a few questions to start.  As I go through my logs I will continue to ask additional questions.  Cheers.

    Out of order answers here.
Don't use the UNI-II band, this should help with the radar, for the most part.  Generally I only recommend 4-6 MAP to a RAP.  Othewise you can over saturate the backhaul, and of course the further out you go, the smaller the backhaul.
You could set a bridge-group name (BGN), for the RAP-MAP sectors.  This can help you limit the number of MAP to RAP, it also will help keep MAPs that aren't your off your network as they do look at the BGN.  However, this is not an end all method.  a MAP can still try to join a MESH using 'default' as it's BGN.
If the mac address isn't in your filter, the MAP won't be able to join, and the message it sends to try, is low bandwidth.
    HTH,
    Steve

    any advice please??
    thanks

It sounds like you are still working out IP connectivity, but I also noticed your AP is not for US regulatory domain.
Can you confirm that your WLC is ready to accept an AP with country code -E?
    Your AP model:  AIR-LAP1242AG-E-K9
    From the WLC CLI
    >show country
If you are in US, you should only have -A available.  If this AP is intended to be used the US, then you will need to acquire an AP with the correct country code, as -E would not be supported in the US -A regulatory domain and should not be used.  Perhaps this is for another location, so you may need to add the applicable regulatory domain support.
This link provides the list of the respective country codes and compatbility/etc.

    Any reason ??

    Hi Adam ,
    Thanks for your reply .
Scenario is that we have 2 controllers in HQ . Controllers running  IOS code 7.6 . APs are 1242 LAP .  They were working fine just one week ago . But now I can see them they are not in the controller , though up . When I checked in PI , Flexconnect status showing down . Hope this will help .

  • My iMac won't join the correct network

This is a new iMac with Lion.  The network is ok because all my other devices work fine with it.  The network is in the list and when I select it my mac joins without problem, but won't join it automatically.  I've also tried to move my network up in the list but that doesn't seem to work either.

Mine is the only network listed in the Perferred Networks List in the advanced settings.  The "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
The problem is that when I wake my computer up, it won't find the network.  I updated my airport extreme last week and this problem started after that.  However, none of the other devices using this network are having any problems.

  • Cisco 2602 won't connect to the controller

    Hello,
i have a problem with my cisco 2602e lightweight/capwap access points. They won't connect anymore to the controller?
It seems to be that ap will connect ap as mesh ap on the controller? A few weeks ago everything was working fine with
these ap's and they are connecting as local access point. When i add the mac address as mic ap to the mac address
table the ap connects to ctl without problem. We have a lot of access points and i don't want to add all of them to the
    ap mac address table.

it looksl like that AP somehow got configured to be in MESH mode, you'll need to add it to the mac filter.  Once it joins you can then change the mode back to local and remove the filter entry.

  • Cisco 2702I WAPs won't join 5508 WLC

I haven't been able to get a few WAPs to join my existing WLC and network.  They don't seem to be pulling any IP address or talking to DHCP, but everything has been already configured and the same as the other buildings that I have deployed these WAPS on.  any thoughts?
Here is the Show Running-Config and Show ip interface brief commands output.

    Hi,
First check that a DHCP pool is configured for APs to pull IP address then only AP will be try to discover the WLC.
Most of the time these problem(AP join) arise when you don't have correct software version on WLC.
For 2702 AP, you need at-least 7.6.120.0 version on WLC.
    Here is the matrix: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html
Fore more info, paste the info which Rasika asked.

  • AP1142N doesn't join his WLC (5508)

    Hello,
My APs 1142N don't join their WLC. APs and WLC management interface are in the same vlan (WLC can ping all the APs). It is strange because it doesn't seem like they are trying to contact the WLC.
What's strange is that I have other AP 1142N which joined this WLC without any problem.

Ok thank. I didn't notice that it was an autonomous image.
It seems that I can't use this guide (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp157147) to upgrade them to lightweight (can't install software on windows seven).

  • 1252 LAP won't join WLC

    Hi all
I'm having an issue with a 1252 LAP that is connected to the WLC over a WAN link.
Basically, it won't associate. The following is taken from a console into the LAP:
*Mar 1 00:00:07.799: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0, changed state to up
*Mar 1 00:00:08.799: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0, changed state to up
*Mar 1 00:00:26.851: %LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DISCOVERY
*Mar 1 00:00:27.003: Logging LWAPP message to 255.255.255.255.

%CDP_PD-4-POWER_OK: Full power - NEGOTIATED inline power source

    2.90a3.533a
    Translating "CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.nation.radix"...domain server (10.x.x.x)
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTEVENTLOG: Controller address 10.x.x.x obtained through DHCP
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTEVENTLOG: Did not get log server settings from DHCP.
%SYS-6-LOGGINGHOST_STARTSTOP: Logging to host 255.255.255.255 started - CLI initiated
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTEVENTLOG: Performing DNS resolution for CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.nation.radix
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTERRORLOG: DNS Name Lookup: could not resolve CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.nation.radix
%LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to JOIN
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTERRORLOG: Join Timer: did not recieve join response (controller - Fxxxxxxx)
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTERRORLOG: Set Transport Address: no more AP manager IP addresses remain
%SYS-5-RELOAD: Reload requested by LWAPP CLIENT. Reload Reason: DID NOT GET JOIN RESPONSE.
%LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DOWN
    IOS Bootloader - Starting system.
    Xmodem file system is available.
The ap-manager interface is configured correctly and there isn't a duplicate IP address.
The LAP was initially stand alone and was converted to LWAPP.
The MTU over the WAN link is 1500 bytes.
All I'm getting from the WLC debugs is:
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx Received LWAPP DISCOVERY REQUEST from AP 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx to 00:19:xx:xx:xx:xx on port '29'
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx LWAPP Discovery Request AP Software Version: 0x3003300
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx Successful transmission of LWAPP Discovery Response to AP 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx on port 29
So basically the join messages don't seem to reach the WLC. In fact they don't even seem to reach the local router on the remote subnet. The discovery packets are seen on the local router but the joins don't seem to appear at all.
I'm not sure if it's a latency issue. Average latency over the WAN link is under 70ms.
I'm assuming the certificate on the WAP is MIC and the MAC details have been entered into the WLC AP Security policies for authentication. I'm not seeing any debugging messages relating to bad authentication at all.
I can't debug from the LAP as it's LWAPP, obviously.
I've been through many Cisco documents trying to troubleshoot the problem, including this http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a00808f8599.shtml, but can't find a solution.
    We're running WLC version 4.2.130.0.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Brodie

I assume you have connected to router's AUX and doing reverse telnet. You should be getting Password: prompt on your LAP's console. Password and Enable are both Cisco. Below is console output from my lab's 1250 LAP after erasing configuration (which can only be initiated from controller). In my case, the vlan is not configured with Option 43 and no proper DNS, so LAP doesn't join the controller.
By the way, your best bet might be to convert this LAP back to IOS and then back to LAP again. Use this method:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918
Do you have "Authorize APs against AAA" checked under Security > AP Policies in any of your WLCs ?
    Press RETURN to get started!

    Hi!
I try to configure a Cisco 5508 Wireless controller and 25 Air-lap1041 to use as VoIP and data. I read documents, manuals, etc, but the AP doesn't charge the configuration, or not conect with the Wireless Controller, why? No Radius server present, only WPA security.howto, please...

    Hola:

    Hi!
I buy a gigabit switch. I connect the service-port to gigabit switch, and laptop to gigabit switch. I used 192.168.1.x ip address (192.168.1.157 to service-port and 192.168.1.233 to wired port on laptop, well, the laptop has two ip adress, 192.168.1.233 and 209.165.200.2, and the laptop works ok. Ping to 209.165.200.230 -ip address of management interface- and ping to 209.165.200.203 -ip address for AP, is assigned by  DHCP of WLC. And i connect the ap to gigabit switch, and the wlc assigns well an ip direction.
I post the run-config and sysinfo log. The gigabit switch is tp-link model tl-sg1005d, no configuration.
Before the logs, I see this message from AP:
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4  ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
    Hola:
He comprado un switch gigabit.
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4  ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
    Un saludo

Can you provide more information such as:
    1. How many APs can the WLC4402 support and how many are currently joined?
    2. What is your WLC's firmware?
    3. Is there a possibility of a duplicate IP address in your network?
