Cisco BackUp Interface Operation Failing
OK Experts,
I have made this issue very simple for you guys to help me out.
I have two routers R22 and R23. I have configured the back up interface on R22 to be interface fas 0/1. Everything appears to be working fine. I issue the command show backup and I get the following on R22
r22#show backup
Primary Interface Secondary Interface Status
FastEthernet0/0 FastEthernet0/1 normal operation
r22#
Also I get the following:
FastEthernet0/1 10.10.13.2 YES manual standby mode down
However, when I shutdown interface fast 0/0 to test the back up interface fast 0/1 I get the following:
r22#show backup
Primary Interface Secondary Interface Status
FastEthernet0/0 FastEthernet0/1 disabled
r22#
FastEthernet0/1 10.10.13.2 YES manual standby mode/disabled down
So it doesn't work.
Attached are the configs.
I was wondering if someone could help me figure out why this won't work.
Cheers
Hello Carlton,
there are some notes about your tests:
a) the configuration of the primary interface includes two logical interfaces main interface and a vlan based subinterfaces both fail when you disable fas0/0, the secondary interface has only IP configuration at main interface level
from your log files:
interface FastEthernet0/0
backup interface FastEthernet0/1
ip address 10.10.14.2 255.255.255.0
duplex auto
speed auto
interface FastEthernet0/0.1
encapsulation dot1Q 12
ip address 10.10.12.2 255.255.255.0
You should remove the subinterface fas0/0.1 as a minimum to make interface configurations compatible,
b) the specific type of interface you would like to use for backup is LAN based Fastethernet.
The backup command had been introduced for providing a backup interface for serial interface and the secondary interface may be a serial interface or ISDN based ( in this case a DDR call is triggered over ISDN).
The dial backup command reference says that support for gigabit interfaces in C7600 has been later introduced.
see
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/dial/command/reference/dia_a1.html#wp1012054
The use of backup command may be supported or not for fastethernet interface on your routers.
If it is not supported, you can easily implement an alternate solution, because you are running OSPF in area 0 in all router interfaces
router ospf 1
log-adjacency-changes
>>network 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 area 0
So all you need to do is to increase OSPF cost on fas0/1 to create a backup path
on R22, R23:
conf t
interface fas0/1
ip ospf cost 50
Hope to help

ErrorCode 2155348254
ErrorMessage %%2155348254Shaon,
I am receiving an identical error message as the original poster.
Let me give you some information on my setup and what I have already tried.
I am running a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller with SP1 installed. The system also runs MS SQL 2008 and IIS. All critical and recommended updates are installed.
The server backs up to a set of one of two external hard drives over USB 2.0 every night using Windows Backup. The external hard drives are encrypted using BitLocker and rotated offsite every week. We had no problems until 27 November 2013. On
that date I installed the November Windows updates and rebooted. Backups have not worked correctly since that time.
The server has two hard drives. The first one contains an 100 MB EFI partition (created for the IBM System x3200 M3 server EFI hardware although it appears to be entirely empty). The second partition contains the OS and the SQL databases. The
second hard drive contains shared data files. None of the partitions are close to being full.
The backup fails with the following error in the Windows Backup interface:
EFI System Partition: Windows Server Backup failed to get an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition. Detailed error: Access is denied.
The event viewer contains the error listed by the original poster (in the detailed view). The general view has this description:
The backup operation that started at <time> has failed with the following error code '2155348254' (Windows Backup failed to get an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition (ESP). This may happen if another application is using files on the
ESP. Please retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
This error is thrown about 1 minute after the backup begins. After encountering the error with the EFI partition the backup exits and does not attempt to backup the other partitions.
The most interesting detail about the problem is that if I reboot the server and immediately perform a backup it completes successfully. If I reboot the server and wait approximately an hour before starting the backup it will fail. The backups
will continue to fail until the server is rebooted, at which point I if a backup is started immediately it will succeed but all future backups will fail. Therefore, it seems that Windows Backup has access to the EFI partition immediately after a reboot
but loses access for some reason close to the hour mark (this is an estimate based on a little experimentation but not an exact number).
Reading the little bit of information available online for this error message I have tried disabling our antivirus (Kaspersky) with no effect. I have also replaced the first hard drive in the server that contains the EFI partition with not effect (the
old hard drive imaged to the new hard drive with no errors, but backups still fail with the new hard drive). Backups fail with either external hard drive connected, so it is unlikely that the external hard drive is the problem. I have erased all
the Windows Backup settings including wiping all data on the external backup drive and created a new backup with no effect. I attempted to not backing up the EFI partition but it is required for the system state. I have reviewed all the Windows
updates installed in 27 November 2013 but none of the KB articles reference anything that I could possibly see related to the backup except for possibly the installation of .NET 4.5.1. However, I do not believe that Windows Backup uses .NET. 'Vssadmin
list writers' does not list any obvious errors.
At this point I am stymied except to think that I have some esoteric hardware failure. I have contacted IBM support who ran an extensive hardware diagnostic which showed no hardware issues.
I run several other similar Windows Server 2008 R2 systems, but none of them are on this model of hardware and none of them have an EFI partition. They all installed the same November Windows Updates. All of them are able to backup to external
hard drives without issue.
Any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated. -
In an Exchange 2010 server/Outlook 2013 environment, one of our users is getting an error message every time they start Outlook. The error message says: "The operation failed. The messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem

The system is as follows:
Size of .pst file: 2.3 GB (Unicode format so there should be plenty of space left)
OS: Windows 7 (64-Bit)
Application: Outlook 2013 (32-Bit)
The user upgraded from Outlook 2010 a few months ago and the error message has only recently started appearing on startup. I thought it was a corrupt mail profile, so I have already tried creating a new mail profile, as well as the repairing tool in Outlook.
I even tested another email account and that worked just fine. So apparently it is something wrong with the specific user's account/profile and not something wrong with the computer - since my email account worked fine on his computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.I had the same error message, only in my situation Outlook would only open successfully every 4 or 5 attempts. When Outlook would open (versus just hanging at the splash screen), I would get two dialog boxes with the warning/error message.
After I clicked okay I could get into Outlook.
Previously I experienced this problem running my Office 2010 client with my Exchange 2007 mailbox on my old laptop. The problem followed my mailbox through an Exchange 2010 migration (so new Exchange org), client upgrade to Outlook 2013, and a new
laptop (so I knew it wasn't a corrupt profile). This led me to the conclusion that it was a corrupt item(s) in my mailbox.
To resolve the issue, I archived *everything* in my mailbox to a PST file, ran SCANPST to fix the corruption, and then uploaded everything back into my Exchange mailbox one folder at a time, stopping after each folder to close and restart Outlook so I could
narrow down which folder had the corrupt item if the problem recurred. I'm happy to say my issue is now resolved. -
When using Microsoft Backup on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2 - [Microsoft version 6.0.6002]) I get the error "The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the
error 0x80042316"
The odd thing is that when I start the backup manually, it works fine. When it runs automatically the error appears.
When doing a SFC /scannow I do get errors that can't be corrected.
Is there anything short of rebuilding this machine (It's a DC and the only one this office has) I can do to fix this?Hi,
0x80042316 means "Another shadow copy creation is already in progress". This error could occur when another VSS instance is running.
Is there any third party backup application installed? Try to uninstall it to see the result. And please also check if there is another backup schedule which causes the conflict.
Meanwhile please provide the result of:

Hi,
I do have Crashplan ProE running. It started at 1900 and the Windows Backup starts at 2000. I have modified Crashplan not to start until 2300 to see if that helps.

Hi
Our user used to be able to change the categories in a shared outlook calendar appointment but is now getting the error:
The Operation failed the messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.
We have tried re-creating the mail profile but still get the same error.
If anyone has any other suggestions, that would be great, thanks.Glad to hear that it works fine in new profile. It seems your old OST file or other file in profile is corrupted. After you create a new profile, Outlook would re-sync your mailbox to a totally new OST as the data file.

Cisco AP1231G failed to flash the interface on failed boot
Hello,
I have an issue with Cisco AIR-AP1231G-E-K9 since I have rebooted it to reload startup conf :
Now, radio is disabled. On web interface, Radio mac address is 0000.0000.0000
I tried a no shut on Dot11radio0 but didn't work.
I tried to upload a new firmware but didn't solve the issue.

tanks for your answer.Sep 23 10:06:12.111 GMT: %DOT11-4-LOADING_RADIO: Interface Dot11Radio0, loading the radio firmware (flash:/c1200-k9w7-mx.123-7.JA3/5101.img)
This is the reason why your 802.11b radio won't come up. The radio-specific firmware is either missing or corrupted.
Most effective way is to overwrite and unpack the entire TAR file. So let the AP boot normally. Don't worry about the radio for the time being.
Make sure you have the TAR file located in the correct folder of your TFTP server. Use the command "archive download-sw /over /force tftp://<TFTP IP address>/filename.tar".
Once the process is complete the AP will reboot. -
Loopback0 vs. "Backup interface GigabitEthernetx/x" for redundance
Hi,
I am a voice engineer. To configure MGCP gateways I have used the Cisco standard method of creating a loopback interface specially when there are redundant switch connections, e.g. GigabitEthernet0/0 and GigabitEthernet0/0. Can anybody please explain if I use "backup interface" method, would it work same way. The backup interface method also has a backup delay, not sure what is default, but secondary interface won't be active until the delay elapses. If I configure "no backup delay" would there still be an event for MGCP? Can somebody please share their experience? If your primary interface fails, is there an event for MGCP? What happens to active calls?
Update: I just found that the default delay is 0 seconds (that means "no backup delay" is not required to be explicitly added, so I assume the MGCP gateway should not experience any impact at all. If you done this testing in your environment, please confirm.
And thanks a lot for quick reply! -
Backup interface on fiber ring
We recently installed a 100Meg MPLS fiber ring into our office, and we were given redundant connections (north loop and south loop).
The North loop is the primary interface, and will be used unless the fiber is cut.
I need to configure our router to automatically switch to the south loop in the event that the north loop goes down.
Here is the config I have so far, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
interface GigabitEthernet0/0/0
description 100MB MPLS North Loop
backup delay 30 never
backup interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1
ip address X.X.X.X 255.255.255.252
media-type sfp
negotiation auto
interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1
description 100MB MPLS backup South Loop
ip address X.X.X.X 255.255.255.252
media-type sfp

Am I correct in thinking that, should the North loop on Gi0/0/0 go down, it will automatically switch to Gi0/0/1 after 30 seconds of down time?
If so, how do I go about switching back to the north loop when it comes back online?Hi,
I have see this feature configure on few ISP. For this feature to work, interface needs to go down then only RP can send UP event to standby link and make it up.
You can also go through below discussion on backup interface
https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/10921951/how-set-backup-delay-serial-interface-ethernet-interface
regarding backup delay , i am not sure why you want to put delay of 30 sec before standby interface becomes active and then deactivating delay is infinite, means it will always remain active even when primary interface comes up.
CCO document on backup delay
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios/dial/command/reference/dia-cr-book/dia_a1.html#wp1011975
backup delay
To define how much time should elapse before a secondary line status changes after a primary line status has changed, use the backup delaycommand in interface configuration mode. To return to the default so that as soon as the primary fails, the secondary is immediately brought up without delay, use the no form of this command.
backup delay {enable-delay-period | never} {disable-delay-period | never}
no backup delay {enable-delay-period | never} {disable-delay-period | never}
Syntax Description
enable-delay-period
Number of seconds that elapse after the primary line goes down before the Cisco IOS software activates the secondary line.
disable-delay-period
Number of seconds that elapse after the primary line comes up before the Cisco IOS software deactivates the secondary line.
never
Secondary line is never activated or deactivated.

Backup to tape failed in DPM 2012
I am new to DPM.
We have configured a protection group for short term goal with 7 days retention range, Synchronization frequency 6 hours. And recovery points are based on synchronization (means 4 Recovery points per day and DPM will have 28 valid restore points after a
week...!!??). In long term goals we have configured 2 recovery goals to tape ... 1 recovery point per week on saturday (retention 4 weeks) and 1 recovery point per month (on day 1 with retention range of 1 month).
Now Im getting PG status "backup to Tape failed" I want to know the process how DPM will check and verify recovery points on disk before writing them to tape.
Based on my protection group settings, there should be 4 recovery points on disk everyday. but there is something different result...see the below in reply.
My queries are:
1) On Saturday weekly tape job, does it require DPM to have valid 28 Recovery points?? What happen if any RP missing.
2) Due to some issues, if weekely tape backup failed on saturday. Can we resume it on monday,tuesday..with corrective actions??
3) the DPM process of verifying disk based recovery points before writing them to tape.Hi,
<New questions Snip<
Q1) For file/volume protection, synchronization is not RP. We have to configure RP creation time manually.
A1) Correct, file synchronizations are not recoverable, only "recovery points" are recoverable.
Q2) For application's (SQL,EXCH,SHAREPOINT) recovery points each synchronization job will create a RP as per synchronization frequency.
A2) Yes, for applications like SQL and Exchange that support incremental backups, then incremental synchronizations are recoverable.
Q3) If a tape backup is getting failed due to invalid RP on disk, I am creating a manual RP with Express full backup(for databases) and a RP with Incremental(for file/volume share), then resuming tape backup. Is it correct way to do this?
A3) Yes, A manual Express full for application data or a manual recover point with synchronization for file / share data and that should allow you to manually create a new tape based backup from the alert.
Q4)How to enable the verify option to check the integrity of the tape backup?
A4) Simply modify the PG that has tape based protection and while on the "Select Library and tape Details" page, select the option "check backup for data integrity (time consuming operation)".
Q5) And what is Co-Location..!!
A5) Tape co-location allows data from different protection groups to be written to the same tape. You need to make a tape protection group set using the "Optimize usage" feature under the management - Libraries page of the DPM console.

Hello,
We are getting the following error when trying to backup our fileserver (DPM 2012 R2) to tape.
"The operation failed because of a protection agent failure. (ID 998 Details: The system cannot find the path specified (0x80070003))"
What is interesting:
- The "Short-Term Protection" to disk runs successfully without error
- The "Long-Term Protection" to tape fails after writing ~2TB of data to a TL2000 tape loader. (Always appears to fail towards end of job with the above error)
- In the past (until roughly a month ago) the tape portion of this job was completing successfully.
The DPM logs fail to give much information around the time of error regarding any failures. Likewise windows event logs give no hint of a problem when the job fails.
Looking for any ideas that may help resolve this.
Cheers!Hi
Has it just started happening? What rollup version are you on currently? -
The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation network issue
Hi
I run some windows (2008 r2) servers on the cloud. A couple of servers are reporting a red x in the system tray where the network icon is, and my network adapter has disappeared.Using ipconfig /renew I get:
The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"
There isn't really more info I can provide. All servers on static private IPs.
ThanksHi GSS1,
Thanks for update.
So can we still verify and get information of this missing NIC form device management console on server ? can we still get the NIC by command “netsh interface show interface” ?
what was the latest modification we performed before this issue occurred ? Is there any error or warring event shown in the event viewer ?
Have we installed Hyper-V on this server host ?
We have a KB article that described a similar issue and some methods to verify and resolve this issue on Windows 2003 and XP platform and we may try it and see if that will help:
How to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP

Hello, i hope someone can help me with this tricky situation.
The plan is to move AD from 2003R2 name "DC" to a server 2012 "DC2"
I have made all the adjustments and transferred all the role to the new 2012 server, and both are now GC servers.
The problem is "transferring" the netlogon share.
in DCDIAg on the new server i get:

I have as a last option the burflags issue, i tried this with the option D2, but i think i have done it wrong, because the netlogon share is gone on the old DC. i took a backup of the files and folders before
i did this. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290762/en-us But i am a little confused on which server i am going to set the D4 value on now? COuld someone help? Best regards AkselHello Dirk
And thank you for your answer, in regards of the KB, do i have to follow the steps regarding:
Global vs. replica set specific reinitialization
You can locate the replica set specific
BurFlags
registry key by determining the GUID for the replica set that you want to configure. To determine which GUID
corresponds to which replica set and configure a restore, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type cmd and then press ENTER.
In the Command box, type net stop ntfrs.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit and then press ENTER.
To determine the GUID that represents the replica set that you want to configure, follow these steps:
Locate the following key in the registry:
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\Replica Sets
Below the Replica Sets subkey, there are one or more subkeys that are identified by a GUID. In the left pane, click the GUID, and then in the right
pane note the Data that is listed for the Replica Set Root value. This file system path will indicate which replica set is represented by this GUID.
Repeat step 4 for each GUID that is listed below the Replica Sets
And so on?
I have only thos 2 DC's in the network...

Why is iCal leather so ugly?
Seriously, gross tan leather that I can't get rid of? Are you f*ing kidding me? What on earth are they thinking? It's the worst of retro. Like sideburns on a 50-year-old. A graying, paunchy 50-year-old. And my address book too? This is worth dropping

When I right click on an image in firefox 4, why is there no option to block image?
This seems like a feature that shouldn't go away. If you want to block images now, you have to manually enter the address of the image. I'm a little worried that other features are going to start disappearing. Is there a check-box to turn this on? I
