Client - Server Networking

I did not know the right place for this topic , but it may be as much of a networking problem or an applet problem.
The requirement is that the client interacts with the server through an applet (client side) , the problem being that an unsigned applet is not allowed to create connections , is there any way in which we may overcome this problem ? (Use of applets is a must)
The source is as follows
class Ping implements Runnable{
    private Thread PingThread;
    private String PingServerAddr;
    private DatagramSocket socket;
    private int Socket_no;
    Ping(String PingServerAddress){
        //Create a new ping thread
        PingThread = new Thread(this,"Ping Thread");
        PingServerAddr = PingServerAddress;
        Socket_no = 25519;
        try{
            socket = new DatagramSocket(Socket_no);
        }catch(SocketException socketexception){
            socketexception.printStackTrace();
            System.exit(1);
        PingThread.start();
    private void doPing(){
        byte PingData[] = "Alive".getBytes();
        DatagramPacket sendPacket;
        try {
            sendPacket = new DatagramPacket(PingData, PingData.length, InetAddress.getByName(PingServerAddr), Socket_no);
            socket.send(sendPacket);
        } catch (UnknownHostException ex) {
            ex.printStackTrace();
        } catch (IOException ex) {
            ex.printStackTrace();
    public void run(){
        while(true){
            doPing();
            try {
                Thread.sleep(10000);
            } catch (InterruptedException ex) {
                ex.printStackTrace();
//A Ping object has been created in the init() function of the appletThe error is as follows,

No, signing requires the author of the applet to do
some work.
The only alternative is to only try to connect to the
host where the applet was loaded from.Yes ultimately that is what I had to revert to , we used the getCodeBase().getHost() in order to speak to the server applet.

  • Client/Server network traffic.

    I don't know if here is the right forum to ask it, but let's go on.
    Nowadays we a system on Forms 4.5/windows/Oracle 8.0
    We have some clients machines linked to the server by a Frame-Relay link and we use Windows 2000 Terminal Server to reduce the network traffic.
    Well, we are gonna update to Forms 6i/Oracle 8i.
    I would like to know if Forms Server can be a good option to Windows 2000 Terminal Server.
    If I haven't been clear with my question I'll can do it again. I'm new on Forms 6i and I've just installed it to test (It hasn't been working yet....)
    Thanks in advance
    Ronaldo.

    This could provoke quite a discussion.
    "If your client are on slow links you may, for example query 10,000 rows of data. "
    Generally, forms shouldn't be pulling back tens of thousands of rows from the database. Your user is unlikely to page through that much, so either you want a summary (which is best calculated on the database server and the summary results dragged across the network) or you are paging through records in the tens, not tens of thousands. (Look at the 'Number of recods buffered' property in your base table blocks. Bet it's one or two digits, not five!)
    "The information that is transmitted to the client is basically screen draw information - and this will be alot less than the 10,000 rows you were querying before. "
    As above. In client/server you shouldn't have been bringing stuff from the database down to the client that wasn't going to be on the screen anyway, especially if you had a slow network.
    Depending on how your application is written, it could well peform a lot worse on the web than in client server. Rather than having the client do a fair share of the work, it's now got to keep talking to the application server to get anything done.
    For example, because navigation triggers don't allow the use of restricted built-ins, rather than putting code in a 'post-text-item/when-validate-item' trigger on the relevant item, it gets put in a form level 'when-new-item-instance' trigger. It's a bit untidy in client/server but workable. Put it on the web, and every time the user tabs between fields, the form has to go off to the application server to fire the when-new-item-intance trigger to tell it what to do next.
    Another 'speed-bump' is if you have any synchronize bits (eg in a post-query trigger, or as part of a "I'm 10% complete" information messages in long running loops). These will also generate network traffic between the app server and form.
    While web server does have advantages, I wouldn't be selling it on it's performance improvements.

  • Networked client-server applications (newbie)

    Hello everyone,
    (Apologies if this post is irrelevant for this particular forum :)
    As I understand peer-to-peer networks, separate instances of application software are installed on 'each' computer, and files are then shared by everyone logged on. My query regards client-server networks (i.e. a centralized server with less powerful client computers attached to it): Would someone please explain (and possibly point to additional resources) how applications are installed on these networks? In particular, is it true that there's only one instance of application software (e.g. MS Word) installed on the central server, and that this is then somehow shared by all the connected users? ... and if not, is it possible to have such an arrangement, so that when it comes to upgrading any application software, the update only happens at one location (instead of on each client machine)? Thanks very much for your time.

    Guy: Thanks so very much :)
    I see now. I was specifically wondering about networks involving WinNT / 'Win 2000 Server' as the 'central' server OS, but think that these would involve heavier clients than the mainframe example.
    I assume that in a Win NT client-server network, if a client wanted to run a program (e.g. MS Word), the Win NT OS would transfer a 'copy' of the MS Word executable to the client machine where it would run and consume the resources of the client. Win NT would do this again for any other client, and so ultimately there would only be one 'stored' copy of MS Word. Also, given copies of executables are transefered, resources of the clients are used up, resulting in medium 'weight' clients with relatively less central server load.
    It'd be great if you could verify this assumption,

  • Client /server model of network communication

    can some some tell me what is meant by the client / server model of network communication?

  • Client/server - sending ArrayList over network

    Hi all
    I have have written a multithreaded client/server application where multiple clients connect to the server. For each client, the server spawns a new thread to handle the connected client. When a client connects to the server, the client sends its name to the server. The server stores the name in an ArrayList and sends the whole ArrayList to all the connected clients.
    It worked fine a few days ago. But now I have a problem: When I send the ArrayList to all the connected clients then only the newly connected client gets the updated ArrayList while the previously connected clients get the ArrayList that they got previously i.e. they are not updated. If instead of sending an ArrayList, I just send the name of the newly connected client to all other connected clients then it works i.e. each client gets updated with that name. It also works fine if I just send an Integer value to all the clients upon a new connection.
    I know the ArrayList implements Serializable, but I dont know how it doesnt work anymore!
    Plz help me with this. I have been trying all combinations, but no luck so far.
    thank you

    to make sure that we are on the same page, here is the relevant code.
    This method updates the list of the peers' names on the Gui (that extends JFrame).
    public void update(final ArrayList dataPacket)
              SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable()
                   public void run()
                        setTitle(dataPacket.toString());
                        peerList.setListData(dataPacket.toArray());
                        peerList.updateUI();
         }This inner class continuously listens to server to get the arraylist that contains the names of the other peers/clients that are connected.
    The con varibale is the Connection where I obtain input/output streams for this client.
    Note: con.getInputStream() returns ObjectInputStream.
         private class Listener implements Runnable
              public void run()
                   while(true)
                        ArrayList dataPacket = (ArrayList) Receiver.receiveObject(con.getInputStream());
                        if (dataPacket != null)
                             update(dataPacket);
         }Here is how the static receiveObject() metod looks like:
    public static Object receiveObject(ObjectInputStream stream)
              Object obj = null;
              try
                   obj = stream.readObject();
              catch(ClassNotFoundException cnfe)
                   System.out.println(cnfe.getMessage());
              catch(IOException ioe)
                   System.out.println(ioe.getMessage());
              return obj;
         }i think that the receiveObject() method should return the updated list (sent from server), but i get the previoulsy sent list fromt his method!!!
    Has it to do something with the stream? I mean could it be that the list is still in the stream (as you pointed out) and instead of the updated list, i just get the one from the stream that i got initially?!
    thank you for ur time

  • Client/Server to Web-Based application Conversion

    Hi! Everyone,
    I have couple of questions for you guys.
    Our Client had recently upgraded Forms 4.5 to 6i to move from Client/Server based application to Web based application.
    They are using Forms Server 6i Patch Set 1, OAS 4.0.8.1, Windows NT Service Pack 5 and Oracle 7.3. They are facing the following error every now and then, when they run the forms,
    "FRM-92100: Your connection to the server was interrupted. This may be the result of a network error or a failure on the server.You will need to re-establish your session."
    Please let me know what might be causing the above error. The only problem i can think about might be Oracle 7.3. If i am right only Oracle 8 and above supports Forms 6i.
    Can anyone let me know some tips and/or techniques to upgrade Forms 4.5 to 6i. If there are any important settings/steps which we might have over looked during the upgrade, please list them.
    Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Window 2000 & RMI client losing network connection

    We have a client/server java application communicating via RMI. The application runs perfect when the network is running smoothly. However, once the client loses connectivity with the network, the client runs in offline mode (as expected). However, once the client reestablishes a connection with the network, it is unable to communicate with the Server via RMI. It seems that Windows 2000 reassigns the client's IP address when it goes offline to localhost (127.0.0.1), when the client is reconnected the IP addresses is changed back to the network address, but it is unable to send data to the server running RMI. Any suggestions? We did not experience this problem with Windows NT.

    you need to specify the IP address of the server object from the JVM in which it is exported, using -Djava.rmi.server.hostname argument to the JVM (since the client and server run on one machine, you probably want to set this to 127.0.0.1, I think)

  • Client/Server hang up?

    I'm writing a basic client server program. I created an ArrayList to hold all the sockets of a connection so each client could, hopefully, eventually interact.
    Right now my client is a text field with a text area under it. A user types a command up top and then hits enter and sends that along to the server. However when i send in the message it seems to hang up and never sends back a reply. But what's really odd about it, is that if i close my server window and there by shutting it down the client then outputs exactly what i expected it to if it was working right. So im curious why there's this hangup in my code?

  • Help with installing a CHAT CLIENT/SERVER

    i cant seem to get my chatclient or chatserver to successfully connect to my server. even if i do a local host 127.0.0.1 thing it STILL says that it cannot connect.
    the server is a stand alone.
    is there a general place to install the compiled files?
    im SO frustrated right now.
    im writing a card game. it is done but now i need to implement the networking. so im starting with a simple chat server and i cant even get THAT to work.
    HELP.....

    I'm actually working on a card game (client/server if I can) as well, when I spotted this message. Card games work for me because they're simple, they're relatively fun and easy to figure out, and they aren't real-time or heavy on animation/sprites/hardware acceleration.
    http://vpoker.sourceforge.net/ is a java based card game that has some excellent examples of how to conceptualize a 'card' object and a 'deck' of cards.
    good luck, can try emailing me if you want to toss around ideas about our respective card games.

  • How to validate a server in client-server application

    I am considering a client server application for a masters project. One of the core requirements for this application would be to ensure that the server could not be replaced. This would be easy to do using public/private keys. The client creates a message and encrypts using servers public key, then sends to the server. The server decrypts, processes, creates response, and encrypts using its private key. This works, however the public and private keys need to be in the source code. It looks like keystores may fix that problem, however the password to the key store would then be required. For this application to be usefull, I need to find a way to embed a password or encryption key in a .classfile in a way that it can not be retrieved by decompiling or parsing for strings. Anyone have ideas on how this could be done, or a different method I could use to guarantee that the response coming from a server process is from my server program and not a fake program?

    More detail. The program is a network license server (not web based). We need a simple license server for internal use, so that we can track usage and limit concurrent users for custom software. We also need some security so that people can not take the software home and use it. We have looked at commercial applications, however they are very expensive and we can not justify the cost since this is for internal software. There are 3 main pieces to a license server, the client libraries, the server, and the key generator. For the license server to be usefull, it should be impossible (or very very difficult) for someone to generate their own keys and add them to the license server. It should also be very difficult for them to create a fake license server that will grant licenses to clients without needing keys. If public/private key encryption is used, then the client would need to know the servers public key and their private key. These keys would need to be compiled into the program, stored in a key store, or looked up at run time from some other resource. The server would need to know its private key, and the clients public key. Since this is internal software, we can limit access to the server software, so it would be ok to compile the keys into the code (not ideal but secure enough for out use). However if I use this program as my Masters project, I would need to figure out a better way to secure it. The generic problem is how to give someone two programs that talk to each other, and be able to ensure that they do not fake one of the programs?

  • Client/server vs. Application Server

    Our company has around 30 sites with each one having its own Oracle database server and file server (repository for executables of Forms6i/Reports6i). All the sites have the same applications running, i.e., the same set of programs are replicated to each site. At present we are running the applications in client/server mode (Forms6i/Reports6i runtime is installed on each client machine).
    We are also using some third party modules developed in VB/VC++.
    Now we are looking for the Centralized Solution, i.e., We want to have a Single Database Server available to all the sites all the sites are already linked with Network Leased lines).
    Now we want to know the impact of running centralized file server (located at Corporate Office site) accessible from all the sites (through same client/server mode).
    Will this solution work for us or we should move to 3-tier mode? Please suggest us the best feasible solution which can be implemented as early as possible.
    What I mean to ask in the question above is: if a good intranet connectivity is available among sites, what would be the better approach, client/server or n-tier?
    What actually would we gain by using application server in this context? Does the Data travelling is reduced from Database Server through to the Client Node in 3-tier AS approach? Does this 3-tier approach will reduce the Burden on Leased Lines? Does we gain more network resources available in 3-tier?
    What I think is that in client/server mode, the data is travelled from Database Server to Client Machine, but using Application Server, the Data from Database Server will travel upto Application Server and NOT to the Cleint machine (on browser etc.), hence reducing Network Load.
    Please clarify as your input makes a valuable role in our decision-making.

    Hello,
    I'll take a stab at this one...
    If you have enough network bandwidth, you should be fine funning in client/server mode. I have worked with clients with this same configuration. In addition to having a centralized DB, we have also centralized the forms on a network drive allowing users to access the same files and removing the need for users having to update their files locally. The biggest problem I see with this configuration, as long as you have enough band width, is that your configuration is not supported as 6i has been desupported.
    From my perspective you really don't have any choice but to upgrade your application so that you can be supported. The good news is that for the clients we have worked with upgrades have gone very smoothly. In fact recently we have started to partner with another vendor that has a tool specifically designed to upgrade Oracle Forms and it includes additional features above and beyond what you get from Oracle. This tool has drastically reduced the amount of time to complete upgrades (like going from a 2 year project to just a few weeks).
    I hate to answer this question because it is hard to answer without really getting into the details with you. The good news is once you do have a centralized DB and centralized application maintenance will be significantly easier.
    One last option you might consider that our company has done is to use Citrix. I've never used it for Oracle Forms, but for other client/server applications it has allowed out clients to web enabled their existing applications without changing them at all and also get a boost in performance. I wouldn't recommend this approach to you because what you have should be short term until you get your forms/reports upgraded.
    If you have any specific questions I can try and answer them for you. Good luck and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

  • Publishing .fla project including client - server socket connection

    Hi,
    I have designed with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 a .fla project that integrates a client - server connection.
    After publishing it, I have the following issue:
    - when running the generated .exe file for Windows, then the connection to the server works perfectly
    - but when I am running the published .html file, then nothing is sent to the server.
    I have tried to change the Publish Settings.
    When setting the Local Playback Security in Flash menu to "Access network only" instead of "Access local files only" then the last packet that was send using the .exe file is resent once and that's all (the html client does not receive the response from the server and the next connection attemps generate data transfer).
    I guess I have to change some security settings somewhere but I didn't find which.
    Does anybody have a hint ?
    Thanks.

    Hi again,
    I was finally able to solve the issue.
    I did not get any error message when using firefox, but using iExplorer provided me this error:
    "Local-with-filesystem SWF files are not permitted to use sockets"
    Googling did then allow me to find the solution here:
    http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.htm l
    The local locations on which I store my html page during the development has to be added to the trusted locations in the global security settings.
    Hope it will help some other people.
    Best regards

    Hi Guys,
    I am wondering about this error as while I am using the same code to connect to the Oracle database server in my Windows program with Win Forms, the connection to the Oracle server is established and working fine.
    But when I have tried to use it with Web Forms for my ASP.NET Application, it throws me out with these exceptions :
    ?ex.Message
    "Oracle client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3.3 or later client software installation.
    Provider is unable to function until these components are installed."

    Can anyone help?

  • Oracle(tm) Client and Networking Components were not found..

    I installed Oracle 9i Client tools on my machine (Win2000 Server), and successfully installed the Oracle ODBC Driver, however, upon using "Oracle in OraHome92" option in my Administrative Tools System DSN I receive the following error upon attempt to connect to the database with my ASP scripts:
    "The Oracle(tm) client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and part of Oracle Version 7.3.."
    I also receive the following error on my page:
    Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80004005)
    [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV failed
    I have tried every trick I know and at this point am out of options. If anyone has a suggestion I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanx
    Phil

  • Developer 6.0 - Client/server mode

    Assuming I have an application server between the front and back ends, what needs to be running in the middle tier, if I am running strictly client/server ?

    It's, first, a problem of client power. On 3 tier, the client needs to do nothing else except run the web browser; the PL/SQL code in forms/reports running on the application server. So, a 3rd tier client might be even an old 486, while a pure client-server would have to be Pentium, preferably 64 MB RAM, have enough disk space for the application and have Forms & Reports runtime installed.
    Then, there is a matter of network communication: an application server could accomodate more clients than classic client-server.
