Cloned HDD, Now Boot Issues. Help Please....

Hello All and Merry Christmas!
UPDATE: The "restore points" utility is fixed. I inadvertantly checked "Toshiba System Volume" to have restore points and apparently it is not supposed to be checked.  After correcting that, the system will now create restore points for the (C drive.
I cloned my Dad's hard drive (Toshiba Satellite L-355D-S7825, running Vista Home Premium) with use of EaseUs Disk Copy and am having some issues. Mainly, at this moment, it shows no previous restore points nor will it let me create one due to error message, "The volume change journal is being deleted. (0x8007049A)". If you can help me correct this then great, otherwise read on for full details.
1) I cloned the Toshiba drive(250gb) to an external usb connected WD drive (250gb). The WD drive is fairly new and has only been used for backups. Anyhow, the computer rebooted before I could swap drives so the new WD drive wouldn't boot upon installing it. Next...
2) I ran the clone process again, this time with the WD HDD installed in the laptop and the original Toshiba HDD as the usb external. Cloning from the external Toshiba drive to the installed WD drive, btw.
This worked fine as the newly installed WD drive booted up and contained all files including OS. However, it seemed to run warmer, so I decided to reinstall the original Toshiba drive. I just wanted a backup drive in case the original Toshiba drive ever failed...
However, the computer wouldn't then boot up with the Toshiba drive and upon re-installing the WD drive, it didn't even recognize a drive was installed?
3) I was able to run a rescue disk to get the laptop to boot with the original Toshiba drive. As noted though, it shows no restore points (should be about 10) and I'm unable to create one. If however, I connect the external WD drive via USB, it then lists all the original restore points?

I ended up going to the Apple store at Chermside (Brisbane) and the Genius could not have been more helpful or apologetic about my broken iPhone. Was changed in 7 minutes, I timed him:).
Now if I can get the wifi problem solved everything will be great.

You're probably running into the servers simply being swamped. Thousands of people are all going for the software update at the same time. Give it a try again and if that doesn't work, then try plugging it into your computer and trying it that way.
I didn't get a notion of the size, it doesn't seem to be as big as the 700 meg 5.0 update, but it did take me 20+ minutes to download via cable internet so it's a large file. That in and of itself takes a while.
If you're trying to download it directly to your iPhone, you'll need to be on wifi since I'm sure it's well over the 20 meg file size limit for 3G.

N8 wlan and hard reset issues, help please

Have a nokia N8, after installing Connectivity analyser beta from beta labs, my wifi reception has become very poor. i ave a wireless N router and before this date the signal was very strong. my friend has an N8 also, he tested the rooms i was having signal issues to see if the router was the problem, however he had excellent signal, leading me to think it was my phone. i uninstalled the app and he weak signal remained, i did a factory reset and the problem remeained, i did a hard reset and the problem is still there, I now have the added problem of no Ovi Suite and other Qt related app issues. Help please, this is really annoying. btw this is my second N8, really getting annoyed at Nokia now. any further specs, please ask

As synth_fg rightly points out it takes quite a bit of tinkering to recover from "hard reset" on N8. To give you an idea what would be involved:-
Download from Ovi Store website the sis installer of WordPress and install it on phone (wordpress install also Nokia Smart Install and all QT and PIPS components)
Launch Ovi Store on phone: which will download the .sis installer and should work without any error
Reinstall Social_1_2_update.sisx from here: http://nmota.messaging.nokia.com/clients/Social_1_2_update.sisx
At this point you are still without OVI Maps but you can install v3.06 pre-release from Nokia Beta Labs: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-306 which will allow you to pinch to zoom on your N8

IPOD TOUCH WIFI WORKING PERFECTLY FINE NOW IT DOESNT HELP PLEASE!

i received the ipod touch for christmas and i tried EVERYTHING to get the wifi to work. ater three days of trying i gave up. it said i was connected completely but when i clicked on safari or anything else that needed to be connected to the internet it said it wasn't connect to the wifi. then on new years eve when i got home it started working out of the blue. since then i never changed anything with my router, or disconnected the wifi from the itouch. i went to the hospital a week or so later after the wifi was working, and connected to their wifi without a problem. when i came home from the hospital the problem with the wifi not connecting start again. its been over a week now and still no wifi connection. i wrote down everything that showed up on my wifi properties when it finally worked and enter everything EXACTLY how it was before and still no luck! ive tried everything and noone has answers for me! any help please!?!?
oh and i also have a linksys router if that helps anyone out.

Two easy things to try (assuming you have the wireless icon at the top left of the screen):
1. When you get home, go to Settings > WiFi and turn off WiFi. Wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Try Safari then.
If that doesn't do it,
2. Open WiFi and tap on the right arrow next to your network name. Tap on DHCP, scroll down and tap on Renew Lease.
If you don't have the WiFi connected signal, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings and tap that. AFter your Touch returns to normal, log into the network.

Login Issues - Help please

Hi All-
I had to reinstall the OS system and now it is asking for a login. Not sure what it is-so I go back to the start up cd hold down C get to change password. Change password as system admin (root level). Quit installer and restart the mac. enter my name and the new password the screen shakes and drops out the password. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the info - Just a brief history on my problem.
I was trying to open an application on the mac and it froze - nothing would work. I powered down at the surge protector. restarted to have the mac hang on the grey screen with the apple. Let it sit for 15 min with nothing. Called and apple dealer near us and was told to reinstall the OS. I had to do an archive & install. I think I had 10.3.9 but the system cds were 10.3.1 or something like that. So reinstalled and you know where I am. SO, should I still restore the netinfo data base? Will this effect my network with others. I back up my HD to another mac at night and vicea versa.

The issue randomly occurred when I was on Google chrome and I wanted to move an app that was downloaded in the wrong place. I went to click finder and it wouldn't open, tried system preferences it wouldn't open. It also wouldn't let me use any of the functions on the menu bar so I was pretty much stuck, however I could still use chrome. After which I closed the lid which enabled sleep mode. Just now I went to open it from sleeping and all there was, was a black screen and my mouse cursor.
I couldn't do anything, even the keyboard shortcuts and had to force shut down by holding the power button.
After which I was greeted with the following screen:

I didn't press anything and I noticed that my mac kept rebooting and kept showing that screen. Instead of leaving it I pressed a key and this came up:

That screen would come up for roughly 3 seconds then it would reboot showing this screen again

Your MBP is suffering kernel panics.
Try SMC and PRAM resets:

If no success, try to access the recovery partition:

Select the recovery partition. From the 4 option menu, select Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.

Satellite boot and recovery disk issue, help please...

Well here is the issue. My satellite is a few years old, all the sudden it quits booting. Gets to the starting windows xp mode then crashes and repeats the process. So I thought, well..I will just install my recovery disks..
Well, thanks to whatever reason, and its frustrating as anything..I get a wrong machine error. Wont allow me to install my recovery disks. Call toshiba, they say my warranty expired have to go pay a service rep.. Arrgh..
This was bought brand new and it is the correct machine..
Anyway..when I get wrong machine i do get:
Installation process aborted/failed!

I am assuming, there is something I can type there that will have it reconize my machine.. Any ideas?? Toshiba was no help. Or.. If you have a idea on how i can boot this thing without the recoery disks.

I have just put my iTunes on a new laptop by hard drive method and some songs are not there. When I go into iTunes it's doesn't say download or purchase it says play.
So you press play and it opens a separate box saying search for file which isn't there.
I have read tons of stuff re this but still not got it fixed. It's not a HD issue because iTunes won't let me download it why ?

Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are unable to download the purchases from your purchase history, because iTunes believes the songs to be in your library. It may be necessary to delete the items from your library, then re-download from your purchase history. Before doing so, you may want to take note of which song are available for re-download:

64-bit Smart View + Excel 2010 64-bit Issues - Help Please

Hello everyone.
First, I am not an "IT guy" so please bare with me as I am not technical but need help.
I am running Windows 7 64-bit Professional and Excel 2010 64-bit. I installed Oracle Smart View for Office, Fusion Edition 64-bit as an add-in within Excel.
I have worked with our "Hyperion Admins" to connect to the right server so that my "private connections" are set correctly (hopefully that makes sense).
However, when I attempt to refresh my Smart View query I end-up retrieving no data. The "refresh" button under "Smart View" in Excel will proceed as a refresh is occurring but then not return data (I know this Smart View template works as I've used it many times on 32-bit Excel).
Our admins have informed me that I cannot use 64-bit Smart View because our "server" is on a 32-bit O/S (or something similar to that). To me, the logic doesn't make sense and I'm hoping that there is a solution the admins are not aware of.

Cause

WRT610n Issues - Help Please

Hi, I have had my WRT610n for a few weeks, and i have a few questions.nI have an option in my Network Settings Called: EGHN Qos Policy Holder? What is this for? If i right click and select "View Webpage" I get the following website linked open.

So why do a i have an option to click on an Invalid webpage, What am i meant to be seeing? Same issue when using either "EGHN QosDevice" and "EGHN Qos Manager Device", both bring the invalid wepage from Linksys. The WRT610N is the only link that opens the correct weblink (in that case the local 192.168.1.1)
Any suggestions?
Also i have a 1TB Westerdigital USB2 HDD, which despite the abysmal USB1 speeds the 610n can handle, Has seemed to of stopped working. I have the drives set to NTFS, which i here some people isn't supported... but all the directories are found, and i have copied to the USBHDD from Linux and Vista machines previously which is when i noticed that the USB speed was 3Mbps P/S instead of 30Mbps as i would of expected. So where is the Shared drive meant to appear?
Do i remember that it appears in the Network settings folder too, becuase i cannot work out how to access my shared drive folders. Any ideas.... Do we know NTFS isn't supported?
Also I have a Intel 5100 wireless N network card, that can only optain a 135Mbps connection to the 5Hz range, It connects at 270Mbps for about 5 seconds, before falling back to 135Mbps and staying there with an excellent signal.
Is this a Linksys problem or Intel? or Combination of both, has anyone with an Intel 5100 connected faster?

The Shared Drive is meant to appear on all the computers in your network if you have mapped the network drive on all the computers...
If you are not gettings the desired speed using the linksys router do these settings :
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop).In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
2.4GHz Wireless Settings :
-Here select manual configuratioon...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network.Now try if you could see the Wireless Network Name/SSID and try to connect...

BIg Problem - loss of sound, unable to reload drivers after reboot. Now what? HELP PLEASE!!!

Have been working on getting this resolved for the past 6-7 hours reading and trying different things to no avail. I have a Toshiba m305 s4829 from Best Buy thats only a few months old. It apparently has a conextant audio driver ('smart audio 221' according to devices), which isn't showing up (there is a red "x" over the speaker). When I scroll the mouse over that icon it says "No Audio Output Device Is Enabled". And when I go check out the Device Manager there is a hazard symbol under "SOUND, VIDEO & GAME CONTROLLERS".
Don't know if this is a registry issue, a BIOS issue, a Vista 64 issue, a problem with me downloading the wrong driver, or somehow screwing up the process of unpacking and installing it. Or if there is even some possible conflict that occured elsewhere.
for more info on any of those ideas:
-registry / bios - I don't want to mess with these unless I absolutely have to. I do have CC cleaner, superantispyware, and Avira antivirus installed and no viruses or spyware currently.
-wrong driver possibility - the first driver I tried was from the Toshiba "downloads" section for my model- its the second one down just issued on 12-02-08 ( http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=2060017&rpn=PSMDYU&modelFilter=M305D-S4829&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663&selModel=2060017|PSMDYU)
So that didn't work and I kept reading around and saw this (see http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=37703&tstart=0); whichpointed me towards trying this driver (http://www.mediafire.com/?mymmj2bkjfc) which didn't work either.
-in terms of how I installed it, I tried different ways. Read that if you simply uninstalled the driver and rebooted then it should automatically reinstall. Not for me. So I tried unistalling the old driver, rebooting, unpacking & installing the new driver & rebooting again. Nothing. I also tried installing it directly over the old driver that shows up, nothing.
-potential conflict?? I do have a lot of music programs on here both recording (cubase, audacity) archiving/ playing (Media Monkey, Itunes), and composing (sibellius 5). It was originally in audacity that I found out I couldn't play my freshly recorded song back.
Getting frustrated, especially on a new system like this!!! Please help, would like to get this solved without having to reformat as I have put a lot of time/ energy into getting all the programs on there and working properly (which they did up until now). I'm not sure about the recovery disks that came with and whether they would help, my understanding is that the latest drivers **SHOULD** be on toshibas website so recovery disks wouldn't be needed.
***A few other tidbits that may help you help me:
- in addition to no audio driver showing up in device manager, there is also a hazard sign showing that my imaging device driver for the computers camera has dissapeared;(Chicony USB 2.0 camera). What was I doing on this computer when it happened? Well, nothing - restarting it. An hour previous to that I was able to record a short rehearsal (hourish) on audicity (though audacity crashed and I had to uthe audacity reovery tool to get it back). I've never really used the camera, but ealier in the day my wife used it to try and take a picture for her facebook profile (which I don't think she was successful at).

1. We have had on several occurrences a situation where we (people in the office using the 941 phones) can hear the caller (or person we call outgoing), but they are unable to hear any sound from us. Rebooting the SPA400 has seemed to solve the problem. The problem has happened at least 5 times today, each time requiring a reset of the SPA400 before the external side of the party is able to hear us.
---try setting VAD to ON , set preffered coder to g711u on the spa400, don't forget the magic power cycle after saving settings.

HD issue, help please

Unfourtanly just before the xmas holiday my secondary HD in my powermac disappeared. I ran disk utillity in the hope of recovering it, but it only gave me error message:
Verify and Repair disk “disk1s3”
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I´ve never seen this before and called our apple care tech guy, He told us to try running Diskwarrior and see if it could solve the problem. But again without luck, I can't even start the scan:
diskwarrior directory cannot be rebuilt, the disk format is unsupported
and the buttons are grayed out.
Again I tried yet another application in desperation, because all my work is on the disk. I bought Prosoft Data Rescue II and It also sees the harddrive and even after a Thorought scan I'm still no able to recover my data.
So Is there any chance of getting my files back?
The computer sees the drive but can't mount it.

Well if you can't recover anything with Data Rescue...
Disk Warrior only repairs your directory.
You can option boot from Tiger install cd and run AHT extended test and see if it reports anything.
You can also try placing the drive in the other slot and c booting off the install disk and running Disk Utility repair disk as it might be a faulty or loose SATA or power cable to the drive.
Depending upon the value of the data on the drive, there is Drive Savers (google it), what they do is open the drive and read the platters. It's very expensive, a few thousand dollars.
Sometimes hard drives just die, I had one happen to me, exactly like yours. The computer can see it but it fails to work. If it's under AppleCare or warranty Apple will replace it if you call them and if you say you can install it yourself a new one can be at your door by next morning.
If you can reformat the drive in Disk Utility, at least all you lost is the data. If DU can't repair or reformat, it's most likely a mechanical problem of some sort.
If all methods have failed, you might want to try a desperate trick.
Take the drive out and reconnect it (so the drive is outside the slot), then reboot the PowerMac, give the hard drive a few small taps with a small hammer as the Mac is booting up. If the drive heads are frozen this might dislodge them a bit enough to get them working.
You might also try warming the drive in a heating blanket first and try that.
If it does work, do make sure to get to get the data off and set your drives to Never Sleep in System Preferences immediately.
Next time, make sure your cloning your boot drive to a external drive at least weekly and backing up your data drive at least daily.
With a bootable clone you simply hold option while booting to boot from it.
Visit Carbon Copy Cloner's forums, they are very good at helping you make a clone. Make sure you donate.
A favorite auto-clone and auto-backup commercial software that I like is Deja Vu (search Apple main page) as it runs as a preference pane automatically.
