A standard SMS message supports the basic letters of the alphabet. Adding support for accented (in any language) requires extra coding to be sent with the message, hence the reduction in the number of characters that can be sent.
It's like in Windows, the accented characters are an entirely different character in the Extended-ASCII range.

  • My iMessage is stuck on the wrong phone number and I keep getting coded text messages from SMS Info.

    I recently switched the sim card in my iPhone when I moved from one country to another. When I put my local sim card in iMessage would not activate (just staying on 'waiting for activation' forever). This has not been a problem before. When I went to send/receive I saw the phone number there is still on the old one from the country I left. This is not the case in phone settings when I look for 'my phone number' or in facetime, which recognise the new number.
    Plus I keep getting text messages from 'SMS Info'. They are just code, except that in there my new phone number is included among the code. The only other discernible characters are the letters 'REG-RESP?'. Perhaps this is something to do with an error in registering my new number.
    I have tried-
    1. Turning it off and on again.
    2. Turning iMessage off and on again. This results in the usual 'it may cost you to reactivate with an SMS' popup on my phone screen, then a popup saying there has been a mistake, then one of these coded SMS messages.
    3. Doing the above in combination with logging in and out of my apple id (as suggested on another forum post here)
    4. Removing the new sim card and replacing the old one. Then turning off iMessage, replacing the new sim card and turning iMessage back on (of course powering the phone down and up)
    None of these remedies have worked. The iMessage problem is affecting all sorts of my messages. Windows keep popping up saying that I may have to pay for an SMS to activate iMessage, except that it doesn't activate. The SMS messages from 'SMS Info' keep coming and I can't seem to get any of it to stop an just work normally.
    I have looked in these forums already and can't see the same problem elsewhere. If someone could figure this out I would be most grateful.

    Hi,
    When a Mac is "registered" for iMessages account with an Apple ID the Serial Number of the Mac is used to create an Auth Token as it is called for the Messages app that allows that Mac to work.
    I would guess a similar process of linking the Number of the iPhone to a Hardware fact about the device is also in place.
    I would contact Apple Support and check with them.  (you might need to speak to a Level 2 person as Level 1 people are script led and try to fit everything into Software or Hardware categories where as sorting and Apple ID (which the Number is in this case) is normally Free).
    I did find this iOS: Troubleshooting Messages - Apple Support
    It starts off about sorting SMS that is not working.
    This one has a bit on Unlinking an iPhone Number (with or without the iPhone) iOS and OS X: Link your phone number and Apple ID for use with FaceTime and iMessage - Apple Support

  • Talkmobile, iPhone 4S and tethering

    Hi all,
    Using iPhone 4S with a talkmobile sim, which works fine except for tethering.
    The iPhone thinks it's on the Vodafone network (which it is, as TalkMobile use their network) and therefore places restrictions to tethering on the handset.
    I'm unable to manually change the carrier to TalkMobile, and lift this restriction. Everything else works fine.
    Anyone have any ideas? Before anyone suggests it, I don't want to jailbreak

    I used to use my 3 sim, which worked fine, I didn't get a coded SMS for that. I certainly didn't ask for one, so unless it did it 'behind the scenes' or something when activating the carrier settings.
    I had assumed that Personal Hotspot required such activation from some networks, but not others, which would be down to the carrier..
    If I can't change it to TalkMobile, or get them to send said SMS (which they know nothing about) then my options are basically change my phone or change my carrier!
    Bit rubbish

  • SMS encrypted vs data coding scheme

    Hi all,
    I have a problem in hands i can't find a "good" solution. I want to send an SMS with encrypted content and i have to send it in 7bit format. If i send it in 7bit format the phone crashes and i think it is due to the fact that encryption uses chars of the extended ascii table (all the 256 chars) am i right? So what is the solution to send an encrypted SMS in 7bit? 8bit or 16bit would work, but it is mandatory to send it using 7bit format...
    One solution could be convert every char to the hexadecimal representation and send the encrypted chars in plain text but in hexadecimal representation but maybe it is not a good solution in therms of performance... Any tip?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards

    Hi Shane,
    Well i also thought that should work and it was what i tried but with no success...
    Look at this example i adapted from an normal Java method to use in the card:
         public  short getHexString(byte[] raw)
              short index = 0;
              for (short i=0;i<raw.length;i++) {
                short v = (short) (raw[i] & 0xFF);
                tempBuffer[index++] = HEX_CHAR_TABLE[v >> 4];
                tempBuffer[index++] = HEX_CHAR_TABLE[v & 0xF];
                return (short)0;
           }The tempBuffer and HEX_CHAR_TABLE are both byte [].
    The problem is in the tempBuffer[index++] = HEX_CHAR_TABLE[v >> 4]; line... If i remove this line i can execute the code in the card (but obviously not with the desired result), if i have that line the IDE doesn't even let me execute the application saying there are still errors to solve... I tried the cast inside the [ ], tried cast outside setting the value in another variable, etc. I don't know the reason why the operation isn't supported and if i can't use it in this simple hex converter, surely i can't use it in a Base64 encoder/decoder.. :/
    You know why that operation isn't accepted?

  • Receiving null and [Receiving text] SMS

    Hi,
    Strange things on some SMS: I receive one correctly but a the end there is the text "[Receiving text]"
    Then I receive a second SMS only containing null
    Why is that ?
    Thanks.

    You coded:
    if (line == null)
    eof = true;
    else
    do something else;
    // then, regardless of the above,
    st1 = new StringTokenizer(line,","); // line is still null here
    So there's the problem.

  • 8350i: Invalid Service Center when sending SMS

    Some time back I followed older posts about enabling the 8350i to copose SMS texts.  Prior to that, menu options seemed to allow only MMS and not SMS.  Those posts basically involved going into Options->SMS Text and changing the Data Coding to UCS2 and the Service Center to +Personal info removed (originally blank) followed by a battery pull.  It all seemed to work find afterwards, that is SMS was then a menu option and sending/receiving SMS was working.
    Many weeks have passed and now all of a sudden, I get an "Invalid Service Center" when I try to send an SMS.  I can receive just fine but just can't send.  I have attempted resetting the Data Coding and Service Center with no luck.  Whenever I change the Service Center, it merely reverts back to +1personal info removed.  I've tryied a Master Radio Reset with no luck as well.
    Any help on what to do is appreciated.

    Hey avni0302,
    Sorry for the delay in response. Can you please tell me what version of device software you are running on your BlackBerry? Also are you still using the BlackBerry 9300?
    Once I have this information I can do some testing.

  • SMS messages in other but English languages

    Is there any problem to send/receive non-English messages? I have installed the second language that I wanted, it shows correctly, I can even type in it using two different layouts, the media files can be either in English or in this language, MP3 tags are recognized correctly. But when I receive SMS message that I sent from my own computer via the Internet gate @tmomail.net it shows up with '?' signs. It looks like the required font is missing, but why if the rest of the device works perfectly with the same language? I have already tried different coding systems including unicode, no luck.

    Hi,
    Try using SET LANGUAGE or SET LOCALE LANGUAGE commands.
    Make sure that the messages are translated and exist in ITALY before you do this.
    Also this will effect only TEXT ELEMENTS not the Message in the message class that is T100 messages are not effected.

  • Limit to Number of SMS recipients

    I have a list of 44 people to whom I regularly need to send a text message of an emergency nature.
    As late as last Thursday I could create a new text message using the default Text Message client included with my BlackBerry, select the group containing 44 contacts, and it would send to all of them with no problem.
    This week I seem to be unable to send to even half of the group. The rror message reads:
    2512:Too many recipients
    Is this a BlackBerry issue?  One of the specifc reasons why I abandoned Android was their introduction of a hard coded limit on the number of SMS messages you could send.
    If thisis not a BlackBerry issue, could Telus be to blame?

    Jun 14
    This is a routing error. When you send a message it goes from TELUS >> 3rd Party Routing Provider >> Recipient Carrier >> Recipient.

    Are the people in your group message all in Canada?

    All in North and West Vancouver

    Do you know who their providers are? What happens if you try to break the group in half and send 2?
    Jun 14
    Bell Telus Rogers. Not in Wind range. Tried half the list, same error. Managed to send to about 8-10 people.
    Jun 14
    I can report this for you and have an investigation logged. However I would need you to provide me with the list of numbers(smallest group)
    Jun 14
    Great, lastly could I get the approx address of where you were when you got the error ?
    Jun 14
    We will send off the investigation. Reference number is 3983024
    FOLLOWUP:
    A day later Telus Support called me, and now says that the error was generated by the BlackBerry, not  by their system.
    They say to create a new group and see if that works. I tried a group text to eleven people today selected individually, and got the same error.
    Their next suggestion is to nuke the phone back to a factory reset.  That may need to wait for ther weekend.

  • How to send picture message using J2ME sms APIs?

    Hi,
    I experiment with SMS APIs, i successfully send simple text message. now i want to send picture message, how to send picture message using J2ME APIs.
    please guide me.
    guna.

    I experienced in coding sending and receiving sms in J2ME. Besides, I also esperienced in coding reading a binary file in a applicaition jar. But I never done these both together. Hence Im not sure it works or not. Below is the example to open and read a binary file:
    InputStream oInputStream = getClass().getResourceAsStream( "/picture.png" );
    if(oInputStream == null) {
    //File does not exist;
    throw new Exception("File not found");
    //Read the binary file and copy it to a byte array
    byte[] abyPicture = new byte[oInputStream.available()];
    oInputStream.read(abyPicture );

    It's possible that your new device just hasn't updated on My Verizon. You should contact Verizon customer care in regards to the texts and to get clear details about your account setup to make sure everything is correct. If you click on "Contact Us" at the top of the VZW website it should show you the number to call.

    Hi! Lately, 70% of my text messages show a red X beside them - normally meaning it did not send. More often than not, I'm finding the recipient DID recieve them, but I still show a red x.
    When I open the "failed" message, it shows "SMS Error 3, Message ID XX"
    Any thoughts? I always have a good signal, have never had this problem before - it only started happening in the last couple of weeks.

    Some more parameters are missing like, Delivery Report, Validity Period, Sent As, Data Coding, Service Center, Leave Messages on SIM Card, Network to Send Over, Retries. I think you need to reinstall the device OS again.
