Coldfusion - Simultaneous Requests
Hi,
BACKGROUND:
I have developed a "Flash Remoting" application using
Coldfusion and SQL 2000 and am almost ready to go live.
The remoting application uses many queries/responses to/from
the SQL 2000 database via Coldfusion.
The Flash Remoting application is a game which I hope will
become popular and be played by many thousands of users at the same
time - meaning that SQL2000/Coldfusion will need to process
thousands of simultaneous requests.
QUESTIONS:
1/ My main concern is that if there are many thousands of
users playing the game simultaneously will Coldfusion and SQL 2000
be able to handle the thousands of "simultaneous requests" going
back and forth from the Remoting,Coldfusion,SQL 2000?
2/ Will I need several dedicated servers to handle thousands
of simultaneous requests (as Macromedia advises that should not set
to more than 40 simulateous requests)?
3/ Would it be preferable to use ASP.NET instead of
Coldfusion:
(i)To Interact between Flash Remoting and SQL2000 as there is
much discussion that ASP.NET is far superior to Coldfusion in
handling significant loads and simultaneous requests?
(ii)Need to purchase multiple Coldfusion licenses in the
event that multiple dedicated servers are needed and ASP.NET does
not require purchase of separate licenses on servers?
I realise that will depend on many variables, however any
feedback on above issues will be much appreciated.
Thanks
Hi
In ColdFusion 10 Standard the Simultaneous requests should be equals to 10 or more than 10 however in ColdFusion 10 Enterprise there is no such restriction, the value can be of a single numeric digit as well like 5,4,6 or so on.
You can consider this as a benefit of running ColdFusion 10 enterprise

Maximum Number of Simultaneous Requests
I want to update the Maximum Number of Simultaneous Requests
from 4 to 6 or 8. A restart of ColdFusion Application Server is
required for changes to take effect. Has anyone experienced
problems with the change not taking effect and/or causing the
service to not restart.
This has not happened. Being precautionary. The reason for
the question is that I made a change previously to the Max Heap
size from 1023 to 1535 in CF Admin, but when I attempted to restart
the CF service it would not. Finally had to change the Max Heap in
jvm.config back to 1023. Unsure why that would not accept it. The
variable is that the service is running with a non-admin user ID on
the server. Thoughts?The prevailing wisdom from Adobe for simultaneous requests is
very wrong and inaccurate. First off, editing the simultaneous
requests in the CFAdmin is safe to do. Editing your JVM settings
with the CFAdmin is very dangerous on Linux because the CF Admin
code can mangle the xml file. I'm not sure if this is true on
Windows.
Now back to the simultaneous requests issue. If you have high
traffic and enough server processing power you can greatly increase
the request number. We currently run our CFMX 7.02 servers set to
100 simultaneous requests. And yes we've been maxed out at that
level. We see over 1.5 million page views per day on a single cf
server with only one instance of CF. As of today we switched to a
load balanced setup and split the load across two servers. The
reason we went load balanced is that we're expecting to more than
double our traffic. Anyways, the number of simultaneous requests
can be much higher than the 'General Wisdom' at Adobe.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I've seen the new setting for
simultaneous requests take effect with out having to restart CFMX.
Cheers, -
Need more than three simultaneous requests , so where to upgrade to ?
Hello,
I have a CrystalReports XI Developer Full Product (Release 1) license. What are the upgrading options in order not to be limited anymore to three simultaneous requests ?
Thank you!Can you provide the exact steps you took to "created multiple children entities under the oportunity" ?

Icreasing maximum number of Simultaneous requests
Hello
I am working on running a web based application , dployed on SunONE app server on a Windows 2000 machine. The goal is to test the application under stress condition. The test client sends 500 simultaneous requests, but I see the number of threads on the appservd process as 176 . I have already increased the max number of Simultaneous threads setting on the HttpServere. Is there any other thing that needs to be changed
thanks
-Aniruddhathe appserver uses a pool of threads for servicing client requests. it doesn't spawn a new thread for each request. after handling a request from a client, the same thread can handle a request from another client.
The following link (although it is written for the webserver, it also applies to the appserver) contains some more information that you may find useful. A similar document for the appserver is in the works.

Real World Max Simultaneous requests
Sun recommends this performance-tuning variable beset between 100 and 500.
To me that seems outdated. For a given hardware configuration what are people using for this value?
Im looking at single processor with 2GB memory.The maximum number of simultaneous requests is specified by the magnus.conf RqThrottle directive.
The ideal value for RqThrottle is determined more by the type of content served than by the hardware the web server runs on. If requests can be serviced quickly, you should use a lower number. If it takes a long time to service requests, you should use a higher number.
For example, if your web server just serves small GIF images, an RqThrottle value of 16 might yield the best performance. However, if your server executes complex database queries or streams movie files, an RqThrottle value of 1024 might be more appropriate. -
Hi
I'm after some up-to-date info on how many simultaneous
requests each CPU
(or CPU core) can handle for CF, these days.
The old yard stick was - say - three per CPU:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_18540&sliceId=2.
More recently people have pointed out that doc is a few years
old (it's
older than the "last updated" timestamp suggests: it's from
around 2003-4,
from memory), and CPUs these days can handle maybe 8-10 per
CPU, and for
multi-core CPUs, that's per *core* not per physical CPU.
And that's always been in relation to the standard CF
install, not the
multi-server version. For the multi-server version I've never
seen
anything except "it defaults to 25".
Now I'm faced with a virtual server set up using this
technology:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_Domains.
So what do I count as "CPUs"
in this case?
Obviously I realise the most accurate answer to this sort of
question is
"it depends", where it's depending on the type of app (CPU
intensive, DB
intensive, etc), but I'm just after a rule of thumb, or
people's own
experience.
I've been working on eight-per-CPU (-core), but that's really
not an
infomred position it's just based on something I read
somewhere, at some
stage.
Thoughts?
Adam> hmmmm, ok, uhm...we have manage as much as 500 a ms,
OK, look, you don't understand my question, so it's perhaps
best you leave
it. I do - honestly - appreciate your efforts though.
I think if you actually read my initial post (and the
included links)
rather than just picking up a couple of words and guessing
what I might
mean, then... it might have helped. At least helped you
understand what
I'm asking anyhow.
[deep - melodramatic - breath]
There's a setting in CF Administrator which sets how many
simultaneous
requests CF will service. It's loosely analogous to how many
threads the
JVM will allow to start to process said requests. A rule of
thumb number
for this was published some years ago (three per CPU), but it
is out of
date, given the advances in CPU performance and architecture.
As time
passed, people have stated that it's more like 8-10 per CPU,
although that
info is also a couple of years old now. I am asking what
people's findings
are currently.
I'm *not* asking "how many requests per second I can make my
CF server
process", nor am I asking "how many JRun instances I can run
on my server".
Now. I'm all ears if you actually understand the question and
have
anything to offer. But, to be honest, I don't think you get
it. So never
mind.
Thanks for taking the time to respond though. As I said, I do
appreciate
it.

Simultaneously request to servlet and causing duplicate trx_id
Hi,
I have a servlet which will handle all the request from external.
That servlet is responsible to insert the request into database by copy a record which already created in one of the table.
My problem is when two requests are coming simultaneously with same trx id, I will hv error of duplicate key.(Note, I assume external party send duplicate request with same trx_id in the same time)
I hv tried to synchonize the method of insert record but seems it does not work. The duplicate primary key error still occurs.
Anyone hv any idea how to solve it? Any suggestion is appreaciate.
Thanks.I did not duplicate record. After it is moving to another table, the currect record will b deleted. As I know we need to change our database design by using foreign key. However the application now is sitting in production and I could not juz change it like that. It will involve others application as well.
Now my question is how I can ensure each table onli can handle one request per time. As we know synchonize method is to lock the method and others request is not allow to enter the record. But why for my case, even I use synchonize method but others request still can access the method in the same time? -
Limit on the number of simultaneous requests using SP.WebProxy.
I've created a SharePoint hosted app and have just added a license check to the app. The license check is done by making a call to a REST endpoint using SP.WebProxy. The app is implemented as an App Part, and as such there can be many instances
of the app on a page.
Everything works fine if there is only one or two instances of the app on the page. As soon as I add a third instance to the page however, the third instance starts failing the license check with the error "This app has reached its outbound
request limit."
Obviously this is happening because all three instances are hitting the SharePoint Proxy service at the same time. It would appear as though there is a limit to the number of simultaneous calls that a particular app is allowed to make.
The problem is that I can't find any documentation regarding this limit. The error that I'm getting does not get a single hit in Google. Is this a limit that can be increased with a setting in web.config?
Does anybody know what documentation I can consult regarding this?Hi Mikhail,
Unfortunately no, we never did get any information on this. In our case since the data that we are querying is pretty much static, we ended up caching the data in a SharePoint list in the app web. We only access the WebProxy if the data is not cached. That
workaround solved the problem for us.
Good luck. -
Troubles with simultaneous requests
(sorry for my poor english)
I have a problem with web sites generated with servlets
- linux server with apache & jserv & mysql.
All web sites are generated with the same servlet and refer to the same database. They are identified with an index
(like www.site.com/servlet/showsite?site=12)
with 5 sites : ok.
with 50 sites :
sometimes, when many users access simultaneously several sites, there is a mix of datas (menu of site #1 with pages of site #12).
Is it jserv wrong settings, or else ??
thanksi think that you use instance variables in servlet class, or you test your servlet by making multiple request from the same session (this could happen eg. if you use ctrl-n in ie to create new window), or there may be something like that
i have used jserv a year ago (wich is quite a time) but i dont remember that i ever had major problem like yours with it
perhaps you should post the pieces of servlet code without uninteresting parts ...

Htmldb_getAsync simultaneous requests problem.
Hi, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question but here it goes.
I am using the GetAsync to populate 2 tables at application runtime through 2 different application processes. What I've noticed is that if I make the requests simultaneously, I run into a lost update problem.
If I call only 1 of these functions at a time, everything works out, however, if I call the two methods in rapid succession, it will usually lead to one of the methods not doing anything. I suspect this has something to do with 'p' that is injected into the handlers, does anyone have any ideas how I can circumvent this problem while still maintaining the asynchronous behavior of the call?
Thanks!
Code Example:
function methodOne(){
var get = new htmldb_Get(null,&APP_ID.,'APPLICATION_PROCESS=PROCESS1',0);
gReturn = get.add('TEMP1', 'variable');
gReturn = get.GetAsync(asyncHandlerOne);
get = null;
function asyncHandlerOne(){
if(p.readyState) == 4){
//insert response into a div.
function methodTwo(){
var get = new htmldb_Get(null,&APP_ID.,'APPLICATION_PROCESS=PROCESS2',0);
gReturn = get.add('TEMP1', 'variable2');
gReturn = get.GetAsync(asyncHandler2);
get = null;
function asyncHandlerTwo(){
if(p.readyState) == 4){
//insert response into another div.
//jquery code to call both methods on document load:
$(document).ready(function(){
methodOne();
methodTwo(); //This results in duplicate div data, or one empty div.
Edited by: user10449650 on Nov 4, 2008 10:17 AMHello,
>> Hi, I'm not sure if this is the place to ask this question but here it goes.
Until two weeks ago, this was the best place to ask this question, as Carl backstrom, who wrote this method, was a “frequent poster” on this forum. Unfortunately for all of us, this is no longer the case (Carl Backstrom - A great loss .
>> //insert response into a div.
Are you using gReturn in inserting the response? The gReturn is a JavaScript global variable. Using the same variable in two different methods, running asynchronously, might cause one response to overwrite the other.
>> I suspect this has something to do with 'p' that is injected into the handlers
The ‘p’ is a reference to the actual XMLHttpRequest object. Two GetAsync calls generate two separate ‘p’ references, so that should not cause any problems (it’s actually a local object within the event handler).

Handle 2 simultaneous lifecycle requests
Hi all
Ok trying to work out the best way to handle 2 simultaneous requests.
What I have
2 pages one with information the user sets
the second (opens in new window) has a report dependent on the information in the first page.
So i can use stanard navigation as i cant open in new window have to use javascirpt window.open
Obvious problem the getters on the second page are being called before all the processing of the first page is done.
So I am tyring to work out the best solution at the moment I have some Booleans and doing some thread.sleep() really isnt a great robust solution so I am trying to work out the best way to do this in jsf.
I am thinking I should use either a phase listener or a view handler but not exactly sure which is the best and what is the best way to do this?@mac_freak:Look what I have just found in the FAQ section of the Nokia N80 support pages:
Q: On my device, can there be several active Bluetooth connections at a time?
A: Yes. For example, if you are connected to a headset, you can also transfer files to another compatible device at the same time.
Note: Some active connection might limit establishing another connection. E.g. if your phone has an active connection to headset you can not connect your phone simultaneously to car kit.
So it appears to be a problem with car kits only, this is why I have no trouble with headset and GPS receiver. I hope this sheds some light on this matter. -
Maximum number of simultaneous Template requests
I am running a CF-server (standard) on a
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5420 @ 2.50GHz, 8 cores
I have read somewhere on the net that you can set 8-10 maximum number of simultaneous template requests per core, which in my case
would be 64-80 simultaneous template requests.
Is that a correct assumption?
This does feel quite high considering the default value of the server is 10 simultaneous requests.
//TobyIt is the common rule of thumb, but that does not make it the correct or incorrect assumption.
What it does make is a common and usefull starting point, with the strong assumption that one will then load test ones system to make sure the setting accually works well with ones applications and hardware. And that one will then adjust accordingly based on the testing. -
Memory leak after upgrading to ColdFusion 10
We recently upgraded from CF8 to CF10 and we're running into some issues. We started off getting a lot of OutOfMemory errors with the default heap settings. Chaning them to 768MB/1280MB which has helped, but we're still running into occasional OOM issues. We took a heapdump as the instance was having problems today with blocked threads and noticed the heap usage was near the max so it was probably going to run out of memory soon too. Below is what the eclipse memory analyzer tool found as a possible leak suspect. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go from here? Not sure if it's an issue with CF itself or something in the app. Thanks

Here's the settings summary from the console. The OOM issue is now happening about 1-2 times weekly after increasing the heap size. Before that it was almost daily. It seems we can go about 75-85 hours before we restart due to either OOM or blocked threads.

Coldfusion service hangs when logging into coldfusion administrator
Hi,
After changing the maximum number of connections to 1, I can
no longer enter the coldfusion administrator.
He allows me to enter the password, and then continues, but
after showing only the top frame on the left, the coldfusion
service hangs.
I use coldfusion mx 6.1 on windows 2003 server and IIS.
Kind regards,
ThomasIf you mean the "Maximum number of simultaneous requests",
this setting can be changed by making an edit to jrun.xml found in
\CFusionMX\runtime\servers\default\SERVER-INF\.
The argument is:<attribute
name="activeHandlerThreads">8</attribute> in the
ProxyService section.
Yours should show <attribute
name="activeHandlerThreads">1</attribute>.
Be sure to make a backup copy of the jrun.xml file before
making any edits.
You will need to restart ColdFusion after the change.
