Collaborative Editing?  Is it possible?

I work with a team of about 250 employees, with about 15 managers. We use Macs in the office, and currently are running a Mac Pro with Snow Leopard Server. We use Numbers to do all our spreadsheets.
Currently, there are a few Numbers spreadsheets that we all share to update information. Those Numbers files just live in a folder on the server. The problem is, is that if more than two people are accessing/editing the same document, someone's information is lost or overwritten.
Is there anyway to setup a collaborative working environment for iWork docs? We thought about using GoogleDocs, but we want to keep the files in our closed protected in-store network.
Any thoughts?

You are lucky if the document survive to these attempts.
The responce is simple : No, there is no provision for collaborative editing.

  • Collaborative Editing

I want to ask you all if Premiere Pro allows Collaborative Editing. If yes, how does it work on Premiere Pro? Specifically, I have two questions:
    - Is it possible to share files on a Central Storage along with several users? It means, an user is editing a project that contains the same files of another user project.
    - While an user is editing a project, is it possible to copy and/or see the project content by another user? Even if this project is locked, which is our desire, could another editor copy and/or see its content?

    Hi there,
On a basic level, this should work.  Editors running Premiere Pro on separate systems can import the same shared media from the network, even across Mac and Win.  When the media is imported in Premiere Pro, the first editor to import the clip has write access to that clip, so they wouldn't be restricted from changing the clip, such as overwriting it, changing the timecode, metadata, etc.  However, any editor that imports the clip while it has already in use on another system will not have write access, only read access.
In the Preferences > Media, there is an option to "Save Media Cache files next to originals when possible".  For best performance, this option is better left off, so that conformed audio will be generated on the editor's system.  However, if you want to avoid audio conforming on each system, and just want to do it once, and you don't mind the performance hit, you may try turning that option on.
In my limited testing, it seems that CS4 (4.2.1), on Win only, has a problem with saving projects to network attached storage - Save As works the first time, but thereafter both Save and Save As seem to fail with a file permissions error.  In CS5, this is not a problem.  The other issue is that Premiere Pro doesn't restrict write access for the project when it is open, so if the project is opened on two systems, there can be contention.  If an editor wanted to peek at the current state of the project being edited by another editor, it would be safer to import the project into another one, so that there is no danger of modifying it.
There are a few collaborative editing products out there that advertise support for Premiere Pro:
    http://www.studionetworksolutions.com/
    http://www.editshare.com

Not sure if anyone in the forums has ever tried these with Premiere Pro, and has some experiences to share...?
    Hope this helps,
    Zac

  • What is the best way to organise remote collaborative editing with Premiere Pro CC

I am writing to enquire about a solution for a collaborative project between two filmmakers in different countries.  Ideally, we would be able to have a cloud media library that could be referenced by both of us as well as a project folder with work in progress that would allow one of us to review the other’s progress or pick up editing where the other left off.
It is a relatively small scale project and I’m not sure what would be the best platform on which to base it.  We are currently both using Adobe Premiere Pro CC but it is the cloud library aspect which concerns me.  We would need approximately 2TB of space in order to accommodate all of the footage and work in progress sequences.
My immediate thought was to use the cloud storage integrated with CC, but as far as I'm aware there is not an option to increase storage size to the amount we would need.  My second thought was to use something like Google Drive or Dropbox, but someone has told me that it is not suitable due to issues in Premiere Pro referencing the files?  I'm not sure I completely understand the issue, hence the reason for writing.
    Thanks

Adobe sells the Adobe Anywhere platform for collaborative editing, but it's not a realistic option for small-scale projects due to the huge investment in hardware required for the servers. Premiere in desktop mode isn't designed for parallel editing - two people cannot have the same PRPROJ file open at the same time, and you cannot merge changes from two separate copies - so if you're sharing the project file on a cloud service you will have to ensure that only one editor is working at any moment. Without active file locking, that has to be done through a manual process (phoning to confirm handover, etc.).
Sharing your original source footage on a cloud service isn't necessary as Premiere won't be changing those files - so the inexpensive option is to distribute copies on hard drives to both editors, and/or for the primary editor to set up a proxy workflow so the project files are much smaller. Both editors then work of locally-saved copies of the footage and download the updated PRPROJ file from the cloud service when the work hands over. Premiere can rebuild its preview/cache files provided it has the source material and the project file in the same place, so both editors would set up the same absolute folder names - don't work from a My Documents or ~library folder!

  • Best storage solution for collaborative editing between two editors

    Hello!
I was wondering what would be a recommended hardware storage solution for collaboratively editing Final Cut Pro X Libraries. Our current process revolves us copying all the video footage onto a portable drive and copying it over to each others machine. This is a time consuming process and the process gets broken up if one of us isn't in the office. We are working only with 1080p (and less) footage and both machines are MacBook Pro's (both have Thunderbolt connections).
I've dug around the internet and found network solutions (setting up another machine as a server w/ the storage drive there) but that setup seems like a lot of work.
Is there another way to do it with a single shared drive, no additional computer setups that would allow us to edit videos concurrently? I'm not looking for a scalable solution, just something to allow us to edit from the same pool of  footage at the same time.
    Thanks,
    Aaron

If you want to edit concurrently, you are looking for a networked solution: either a drive on a server, like you mentioned, or a NAS (a drive connected directly to the network) or a SAN (storage area network, which is a more sophisticated, professional setup - that would likely be overkill in this case).
In any case, you need a fast network - at the very least gigabit ethernet. There exist NAS options for a decent price.
In this kind of setup, you would save all your media in the NAS, work on your libraries locally, and use "external media" - so the media would stay in the designated places in the NAS, and the libraries point to it. Libraries will be fairly small, and you could pass them around.
In any case, you would share the media concurrently, NOT the libraries.

  • Collaborative editing unable between two ipad users

I'm trying to share a numbers file created on an iPad (and stored on iCloud) with my wife's iPad to allow for real time editing, but seems to me that the only way to do it is using a web browser running on a MAC o PC (Safari on the iPad seems unable to do it). Is not possible to do it with numbers running on two iPads? How strange... Ought to be my fault.
    Thanks for your support.
    Amando Hernández

Grrrr yes I also just stumbled across this very problem after I spent the money on the app for my girlfriend.  I've requested a refund as this is very very poor.  Iwork for iCloud pages talk of sharing, collaboration, ios, web etc etc yet in practice I simply can't collaborate  with another user on an ios device using safari or Numbers app.
    Very disappointing.
Share document links with others instead of sending out lots of separate attachments. Then make instant progress by editing together in real time. See who’s in the document and follow their cursor as they make edits alongside you. You’ve never had a closer working relationship. With people so far away.

  • AVCHD Editing - Export - Best possible quality?

    Hi there,
I own the panasonic hdc-sd9 (avchd). I´ve read millions of words regarding the quality, problems, exports, interlace and so on and (although I understand the details very well) after all I´ve been confused indeed.
What I really want to know (a nobody could answer in a clear and simple way) is the following:
    1. I´m able to import 1080p-movies into iMovie 08. Since iMovie only works with 540 lines, what happens to my video files? Does iMovie cut away every second frame? (1080p is not interlace!)
    2. If I use FCE or iMovie HD 06 and do an export of 1080i, applying an deinterlace-filter, how much lines will be exported (1080 or 540) ?
    3. The main problem: In which mode (1080i or 1080p) should I do the record, and how should I export then after editing (iMovie08, iMovie06 HD or FCE) to get the BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY WITHOUT INTERLACE ? That´s the simple question, nobody can answer to me.
    Kind regards
    Joerg

and AVCHD is of no use for iMHD6 too..
we noticed on araise of iM08 some weird effects on export of 'video' from within iM08 Projects (me old dv user, so forgive my ignorance making my test with that old Standard-standard): http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1090633
afaik, AVCHD gets automatically converted to AIC to make it editable (=no 'native' AVCHD editor on Mac). what happens to progressive footage on export? No idea.. (lack of AVCHD files......)
that 'cheap' deinterlacer was meant for the QT-Deinterlacer feature: you can double any odd line to create 'progressive'; or, on professional equip, a DI would 'blend' the odd and even lines into two 'inbetween' lines..
Don't hesitate to perform your own tests, free tool JES Deinterlacer http://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html - it uses that 'blending' techniqué.. does NOT rely on the Quicktime engine..
so, iMHD6/FCE3.5 is of no use for your device; iM08 could probably do weird things on export.. test it and share your insights, screen shots preferred..

  • Collaboration API - Is it possible to retrieve all the projects stored in a specific project folder?

Hello,Is it possible to retrieve a projects list with the collaboration API from only one information: the project folder where are stored these projects ?
I parsed the API collaboration reference manual. And I don't find any function allowing me to do that. Can somebody confirm or explain if such a query is possible ?

  • Is edit to tape possible with a HDV timeline?

    Hi all,
I´m working with Final Cut 5.1 and I´m trying to export my HDV timeline to a HDV recorder(Sony HVR-M10E). Print to video is working but edit to tape not.
is it possible to edit to tape with HDV? If not is there any workaround for frameaccurate editing to tape.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks, Carmen

    nope...
The work around is to export your sequence as a DVCPROHD QT movie (using the same frame rate), then edit that to tape.

  • 7 angles (cameras) edit - is it possible for iMac 3,06 Intel Core Duo?

    or i want too much?
Hi there! I have 7 tracks of ProRes HQ 1920 X 1080 50i to perform a multitrack edit. Problem is - doesn't show a realtime preview, so i can't choose a proper track
Is it possible with my iMac 3,06 Intel Core Duo, 2 Gigs of RAM, + strip 1TB raid? I guess i'm in lack of memory If i increase the amount of RAM to, lets say, 8 Gigs - would it solve a problem?
If not - is there a way of some low resolution editing? Thanks

ProRes HQ, certainly not. Definitely not over Firewire and almost certainly not over even the internal drive (not that you'd want media on your system drive anyways). Yes for low-res editing, it's called offline editing. Someone else will probably have a lint for you to Kenstone or Creative Cow to easily tell you what to do, but when I did it for me, I went from DVCPro HD to DV NTSC. As long as you export the correct timecode, you should be set to then edit in that offline format's sequence then Media Manage back to the full-quality files.
    Hope this helps,

  • How can i control a video embedded in pdf while viewing in adobe digital edition. is it possible?

I have a pdf file of 10 pages - in 2nd page of pdf there is video, I can control this video (play, pause, stop etc.) in Adobe Acrobat 9, but when we are opening this pdf in Adobe Digital Edition - Controls goes Hidden,  and we are not able to control the video. Is there any way to control the vedio?

    Hi,
It should be checking the Course on basis of the User Access i.e. whether the slides have been viewed fully or not as well as if there is a quiz has the user successfully completed it or not. So, in case of a video only slide views would be checked and passing criteria will depend on it

  • Editing @ 1324x966 6FPS: possible?

I have some odd video from a scientific instrument that is 1324 x 966 at 6 frames per second. I want to edit it, add text, overlays, etc. for a presentation.
However I cannot for the life of me seem to find how you would import this video into a project without the video being formatted to 30 FPS or 24 FPS, and also, being changed into a different resolution.
Can I do this in FCP? If not, is there any software that can? I have Premiere Pro CS3 and that does not work either from what I can tell.
Is there any program that just lets you open a dang video file and edit with multiple video tracks (I need to layer two tracks on top of each other) without being forced to use one of the "standard" resolutions and frame-rates??? **** the old Adobe Premier from 1994 would let you do this, but it seems to be a feature that has been removed.
I mean how do you create a new project in FCP or Premier that will be 6FPS and 1324 x 966?

Doesn't work. I made the multiclip sequence but then when I export that using "current settings" to a QuickTime Movie, it changes it from the native resolution of 1392x1040 to 919x686, and changes the FPS from 6 to 18. Inexplicable.
There's a custom settings box but it only lets you change the FPS down to a lowest setting of 23.98. Also, if I manually set the export resolution to 1392x1040 then when it exports it resamples it from 919x686 and it looks all pixelated and chunky! Even though the source video is tack sharp!!
So OK that didn't work... any other suggestions?

  • Attempting to edit mxf metadata - possible?

    Hey all,
Is there anyway to get Bridge's metadata editor work on .mxf files?
Here's my situation - I work for a small production company that shoots solely on P2 footage and we're looking to setup some easy way of organizing and bringing our logged footage into one searchable location.  I was hoping Bridge would be the answer but the problem I'm running into is even though Bridge identifies .mxf files of the footage, it won't let me edit the data to match the logs we've already done in Premiere.
    Thanks for taking a glance!

Sorry I wasn't clear about the Time Machine reference. I was explaining my reluctance to roll back to a previous version of my main library if the changes I had made to the MBP library were going to prevent me from importing its .xml.
    Chris CA wrote:
Once you import the songs, you should be able to import the iTunes library.xml file from the other libraries to update this info with the songs you just added.
How exactly do I do this? As a test, I tried making a new library and importing just a few songs, all of which came in with today's date. Using the WAG approach to importing the .xml, I tried using "add to library" and selecting the .xml of the real iTunes library. Nothing happened. I then tried "import playlist" and selecting the real library's .xml, which triggered the import of all of my songs, all with today's date. I suppose that today's date could be a function of using a just-created library for my test, but...
Clearly my guesses were off the mark, so I could use a little more guidance.

  • App-V and Microsoft Office 2013 Home Premium O365 Edition - Is it possible?

    Hello,
Over the past couple of days I have been trying to sequence Office into an App-V app. As far as I can tell, the app is created successfully, the problem is publishing the app and actually installing it on clients. I have tried to get this to work using multiple
methods, and the commonality between all of them is that the XML files seem to be unreadable or corrupt? Here are a couple of screenshots that show the problem.

I have followed various guides, and tried sequencing the app on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Has someone had success deploying HomePremium using App-V? If so, can some one tell me where I'm going wrong? Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi Mike,
What's the specific build number of your Office? Looks like the same issue as this thread:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/98e5508b-7898-4b2b-b24d-3fd0194bbbc7/office-2013-with-visio-and-project-error-package-manifest-is-invalid?forum=mdopappv
As suggested in the thread, please try to add the Version attribute to the
Add element to specify an older version number, then try again and see if it's an build issue.
Since your query is directly related to APP-V, I would also suggest you to try the forum of
Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V), where you will get the most qualified pool of respondents.
