Color correction filter

I've been trying to learn the color correction filter. I used the manual, and read how to apply filters and the chapter on color correction. So I select my clip in the sequence, park the playhead where I want to monitor, open the scopes, drag the filter from the browser. When I use the sliders or controls, nothing happens! I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

First of all Catrina did you drag the color correction 3 Way filter from the browser window onto the clip (sitting on the timeline) that you want to be affected?
If so you should be able to control your changes in the viewer window and see the results of your colour grading on tha canvas in real time.

  • Color correction filter and keyframes

After lots of projects in FCE, I should know this!
I have a clip with a color correction filter and keyframes at either end of the clip.
Question: If I break the clip in two, am I correct that the color correction filter and keyframes are no longer shared by the two clips? Changes made to one clip's keyframes no longer effect the other clip's color correction settings?

    That's correct.

  • Strange thing in FCP´s color correction filter...

Hi i have noticed that I do have in my FCP color correction filter one of the WHITES dropper colored in green???
    Have a look a this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elegantmob/3930570127/
Is this normal? I do not remember seing it that way. Should I do something?
    Thank you
    St.

that indicates that you have enabled the *Match Hue* function ... click the round reset button at far right of the Match Hue controls (below the Mids wheel) and it should revert to normal
you can read more on the venerable Match Hue function here

  • Choppy clip with color correction filter

I'm working on a video that has multiple clips. The clips that are choppy have a Color Corrector filter on them. The choppy clips stay that way even after exporting, but the rest of the file is fine. All video came from Canon Vixia HF200. I'm thinking I have a memory issue, but I'm hoping it's a user error issue. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2 GHz Intel Core, 2GB RAM. I'm using a Lacie 1TB external drive for the video. Final Cut Express 4.
    Any help is appreciated!

Have you fully rendered the sequence before viewing/exporting? Click Option-R to check.

  • Color Correction with in Final Cut Pro 6

    Hi All,
I have a showreel of my work, and some of the clips have sections that are darker than I would like them to be, and I would like to correct the color issues. Is it possible to only correct 3 seconds of over dark video, and not have the entire 2 hours thus over bright? I have tried with key frames, and maybe I am not doing the right way.
I put a keyframe on the 1st frame of the clip in question, then on the last frame of the correct section of the clip, then 1 frame later another keyframe, this is now on the incorrect color clip, then 2 more keyframes, last frame of incorrect color, then on the 1st frame of correct video.
    Is this ok?
    Justine

A better way is to blade (or add edit) at the beginning and end of the section that needs the correction and just apply the color correct filter to that section.

  • Auto-select clip under playhead? (for color correction)

    Hi all
Another newbie question concerning color correction in FCS2.
When moving from clip to clip in the timeline, the viewer (which contains the 3-way color correction filter) doesn't refresh until I remember to double-click on the current clip to select it. In other words, if I change a filter on one clip, then move in the timeline to the next clip, the viewer still contains the previous clip's filter, and if I forget, I'll start fiddling with it, thinking I'm now looking at the current clip.
    Still with me?
So, my question is, is there an "auto-select" feature whereby, as I move my playhead along the timeline, clips on a selected track (eg V1) will automatically get selected and loaded into the viewer?
I know there is an auto-select feature for tracks, which I've enabled for my video track, but it doesn't seem to be meant for what I want.
    Thanks!
    Matt

If you set the SYNC to OPEN, what is being played in the time line (and displayed in the Canvas view) will also be displayed in the Viewer.
Just a point of clarification - the Viewer doesn't hold the CC filter, it will only display the filters that have already been applied to currently displayed clip. If the next clip displayed in the viewer has not had the 3way CC applied, the 3way CC won't display as part of the filters on that clip.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Color correction questions

I have a few questions about the color correction tools in Premiere CS4.
    1. Suppose that the colors in my shot are basically correct, but the blacks have a tint to them.  Which is the best color correction filter to use to correct for this?
    2. Do any of the color correction filters desaturate secondary colors?  I have a shot that would probably look fine if I could just desaturate the yellows.
I know that this can be done in Photoshop.
    3. Is there a good technique in Premiere for matching colors between two scenes or cameras?  I know Avid's color correction has a specific setting for this.
    Thanks in adance!
    J. D.

    1) tint in black probably means white balance was off a bit ( not matched to your light source).
Can try to correct WB overall and get rid of black tint ( use eye dropper and choose the black area that's supposed to be black and make it black...see what happens to the rest of your image colors )
    2) maybe broadcast colors...which has some tendency to imitate "selective color" in photoshop, as you adjust stuff ...
    3) no ...except maybe ( again ) broadcast colors ...  but probably you have to do by eye or LUT...but basically no
I'm kinda new at this so dont take my word as gospel...someone else may have cool ideas ( they usually do )

  • Color Correction - In Premiere CS5 or After Effects CS5?????

    Hello
I started this question in Premiere, but am now thinking that perhaps I should take advantage of the additional color correction tools in CS5 After Effects.....
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/777459?tstart=0
If any one is interested in helping me do this in AE CS5, here is a copy and paste of the question from the above link:
I have two clips that I need to color correct.  Please see attached.   I want to brighten up the clip on the BOTTOM to more match the clip on  the TOP
The cinematographer has given me these instructions:
"  Specially the third clip with the two foxes ) shots are dark compared  to the second  time the foxes are shown. You will have to apply a color  correction  filter on them and work with the midtone and the light  sliders so you  can make it a bit brighter.  Also you will probably need  to bring the  balcks down a bit once you pushed the midtones, you will  have to see  what it looks like once you are correcting."
I haven't done much color correcting, but the above seems pretty basic.  So any suggestions you have will be appreciated.

To make those changes all you really need to do is adjust the levels... so apply a "levels" effect and adjust accordingly... in either Premiere or After Effects... it works the same in both.

  • Multiclip Color Correction

So I have a 3 angle multiclip - I place it in the time line, play it and edit it. Now I want to color correct. The manual says I can drag a color correcter filter from the effects browser onto the timeline clip where I am offered the option of 'apply to source angle' which I do as I am told this will allow me to alter the settings for the whole of that angle each time it appears in the timeline edit. However, this is not what happens, it only effects the one piece I dragged the filter onto. Every subsequent time that angle appears it does not have the filter on it. Additionally the manual says to see filters rendered to multiclip angles choose "Render Filters in Multiclip Display from the View pop up menu" - this option is not in the View pop up menu.....
    any ideas?

This probably isn't the norm. But, I've been color correcting and when I have numerous pieces in the same scene that can use the same color correction I just click on filters and copy all. This copies all the filters and then just go down the line and copy into each sequence. For me it goes very fast. If you're just using Color Correction, in the upper left corner are two arrows facing each direction, if you click the first in either direction it copies that CC to the next clip. If you hit the second it goes two clips over.

  • I don't see my color correction filters?

    Hello again,
I'm working with a subclip that I created from a capture that I made from my video camera and I am having trouble finding the color correction tools that were available when I went through the Color Correction tutorial. I opened up my video in the viewer and switched to the Color Correction window layout. In my viewer I have the following tabs, Video, Mono (a1), Mono (a2), Filters, and Motion where I can't find any of the settings for brightness or RGB control. How do I find these controls?
    Thanks

Have you added the 3 way color correction filter to the clip?

  • Batch color correct?

I have applied color correction filter to a timeline of clips (55). Now I want to go in and adjust the whites on all of them slightly. Is there a way to batch color adjust them?

First, load up an already existing CC filter into your viewer.
Then use the track tool to select all of the video clips in your sequence, then press Command Option V to Remove Attributes. Use that function to remove any existing filters. Make any necessary adjustments to your CC filter in the viewer, then with all of the clips still selected in your sequence, drag the modified filter down from the viewer.

  • Blown out footage - Color Correction fix-it tips

I'm dealing with some DV footage that was shot about three or four stops open, daylight exterior, so everything is pretty blown out. Using the 3-way color correcting filter certainly helps take things out of the 'illegal zone', but it makes the skin tones glow (like bad chroma video) and leaves patches of white space on foreheads and upper arms. I am editing two camera footage, so matching the footage the best I can is important. I understand that color correction has it's limitations (especially on FCP) and bad footage is bad footage, but I just wanted to open up a topic for tips and tricks on how one might solve this proablem, or at the very least, improve upon it.
    Thanks in advance!

At 255-255-255, overexposed photosites carry no information.
You can adjust some of the mids and blacks but the highlights are completely gone.
    Period.
The only cure is to know when and how to use auto-exposure and when and how to turn it off. Knowing how to control a camera is one of the things separating photographers from snapshooters.

  • Losing Mask when color correcting

I am trying to isolate a certain color, so I applied a mask in Motion because I get a much better/easier mask there. I bring it back in to FCP and add color correction, no problem. But the second I try to limit the effect it is gone. It is like that makes the alpha go away or something. Any thoughts to why this is happening and any suggestions?
    Thanks as always
    Shawn

Ok, let me try this again.
On track one I have a clip that is black and white.
On track two I have the same clip that I have put a mask on in Motion. Which is over an object that I want to isolate the color which in this case is orange.
I add a color correction filter to clip 2, then I clip on the limit effect triangle in color correction and use the dropper to select the orange from my clip.
At the point the mask immediately disappears. That is about as clear as I can make it.
All I want to know is why this is happening and a possible work aroound. Color might be the be solution for this down the road, but would like to figure this problem out for now if possible.

  • Multicam and Color Correcting

Is there a way that I can set the color correction for one camera, and it applies to all of the cuts. When I drag the filter onto the clip it asks to apply it to the source angle, or to the multiclip. I have tried both, and it will only apply to that one clip and not all of the other clips that are from that camera. Will I have to apply to each individual clip, or is there and easier way?

    hi Rod
color correction workflow for Multiclip projects is no different than for any other FCP project
that is, correction is applied on a clip by clip basis
you can only apply a universal correction to a clip (or angle) by applying the correction to the source before you start editing with it ... thereafter, every instance of that clip will have the filter applied
of course, you can apply the color correction filter to an angle of your multiclip and every instance of that angle that you cut in will have the filter applied
(i did notice before, that even though the clip may be color corrected, the multiclip display only shows the unfiltered clip, and the filtered clip only displays correctly once it is cut into the timeline)
sure, it might be nice if there was an option somewhere to force a filter applied to a master clip (or angle) to be applied to every other instance of that clip ... but there isn't!
    good luck

  • Color correction filters do not APPEAR to work

    Hi All,
I have been working FCS as long as it has been around and have just come across a strange issue:
I apply a Color Correction filter (does not matter which one)
-In the Viewer screen the filter appears and i can move the adjustments
-The render Bar changes color in the timeline
-No color correction appears to take place in either the Canvas window or the scopes.
    Here are my sequence settings:
    Compressor: Apple Prores 422 (HQ)
    Quality 100%
Render all YUV material in high-precision YUV
Process Maximum White as Super White
    Motion Filtering Quality Best
    Render Frame rate 100%
    Resolution 100%
    Codec same as Sequence Codec
My Computer setup is listed in my Profile.
    Latest FCS, latest OS
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

Studio X is exactly right. I've tried the Bunnahabhain solution and it works. Why? I have NO idea. How an inanimate object (Mac computer and FCP software) can "heal thyself" overnight is beyond my comprehension. Anyway, in the end, I'm sure only Steve Jobs knows the answer and he put a block on my calls. So the only thing I can add is that the key is the Bunnahabhain. Under NO circumstances should you substitute the Bunnahabhain. I did and was beaten soundly by a couple of undercover "Geniuses" from the Apple store.
Another helpful thing is to NEVER sit down in the presence of your Mac with a negative attitude toward it or Steve Jobs. I promise you it can sense it and it will punish you. Clear your mind of negativity and become one with the universe BEFORE you begin to edit on a Mac. This is imperative. No one asked you to join the cult. Like it or not, you're in it now and there is NO escape.
