Color correction, muzzle flares and smoke questions

A couple of days ago I directed an action sequence called 'Silent takedown' using Premiere CS5 and After Effects. The goal was to do a very fast paced editing style but still within the realm of 'classic' action films from '90 like Face/Off and Mission Impossible 2. I've got some question regarding visual effects done in After effects. Tell me if you thought they were good or bad. Also the color correction was done in AE and PP. Does the overall movie look good?

Well, aside from it being quite disturbing to have a team of 14 year olds turning everyone to blood soup it's got some great camera work.
Your first mistake might have been thinking there's anything worth copying in mission impossible 2.  Sorry, had to be said.
Todd's right.  The clouds of blood is comical.  Maybe tone that down?  Right now it just looks like a string of video copilot tutorials one after another.  You need to hide effects, and make them feel seamless.
Ask yourselves what are you trying to showcase.  If it's post production, you have to tweak those effects and make them look classy.  There are shots where bullet holes are appearing in glass and there's little breakage, and no reaction from the actors.  You can't just glue in effects.  If the actors don't react, you can't use the shot, or it should be changed so you don't notice.  Add a shake etc.
If it's editing, then that has to be solid too.
You've got time shifting all over the place without it being stylistic.  For example, the guys who walk up off the top are shown in a wide shot that you re-use for the security cam.  They enter, put their masks on, walks softly up to the guards and take them out, but then we are inside and the scarface guy is watching action that happened minutes ago on the monitor.  If you're going to jump around in time, you need to find a stylistic way to do that.  Why not bring the scarface guy's scenes into the lead up, show the monitor, (drop that long shot at the top) to introduce the guys sneaking up.  This introduced tension (will scarface notice???) gives you an idea of who the guards are watching out for and drops that opening super wide of the two kids going up against the wall.  That shot doesn't work because when you show them super-wide, you get a feeling for how exposed they are and what a terrible job they're doing of "sneaking" up.  But it works as security cam footage...
Another example is when you have one of your agents say "good morning gentlemen.  He says something strange to men who are in masks and they give him enough time to put a gun to his head and pull the trigger in spite of the face that they're holding their own guns.  Then you have the camera exposure flash cuts to the other agent sneaking up...
If you want to make this effect work, you need to use editing to explain why the second guard didn't reflexively shoot the first agent.  have the agent say, "good morning gentleman" and start the action of raising the gun.  Then flash cut to the other agent sneaking up, then back the the first agent shooting, then back to the second guard being shot.  Then all of a sudden you have a frenetic action scene.  Right now the pacing feels slow and unrealistic.
The effects go off the rails a bit at the end.  The muzzle flashes don't aim in the right direction, and the particle smoke becomes very obviously added in post.  One shot in particular is a dude walking through a black smoke cloud from behind a van.  Loose that smoke in the second to jump cuts.  And if oyu're going to have a smoky enclosed space. you have to add atmosphere in other shots.
If you're not going to use practical effects for the gunshots, you need to cut away. Having a guy explode with particles and stock footage will always be "funny" without having some squibs on set.  I know it makes it harder and more complicated, but you have to have the whole package, or it'll always just look like kids messing around and...
... oop, my render is done.

  • Color Correction for DVD and online

I have a 13" SD TV hooked up to my mac working as a color correction monitor for FCE.
My question is: Should I always color correct using the TV monitor vs looking at the Canvas in FCE? What I'm seeing is the picture in the canvas is darker and more saturated then the view of the TV monitor. Is it best to trust the TV monitor vs the canvas? And should it make any difference if the final project is going to DVD vs online? I'm assuming the ending product (mov file) should look the same if the mov file is viewed from a computer vs on a TV from a DVD. In a nut shell, once the clip is color corrected using the ext monitor, should I be good to go no matter where the file ends up?
    Thoughts?
    Thanks so much

    Hi
I would take some photos with color miss match eg blue tint (Blå-Stick in Swedish)
and with other known color anomalities.
Put them in TimeLine and playback. View TV - corrected or as bad as from start.
I use a color corrected CRT-broad-cast monitor but prior to this a small TV and
this one did a good job.

  • Color Correcting in Final Cut general question

I am finding I'm at the end of a long process with my feature film and I'm preparing to output and yet again I've run up against a wall of my ignorance...
    1. It's a dv film I don't want to just output the film and then apply a color correct as I'm afraid of a lot of clipping...so I'm doing the individual clips through the film and I'm finding a lot of them I have to limit the rgb to 90 some go as low as 88, some are just fine at 100 or 97...it was shot on the dvx100 and I looked up the dvx and see it is geared for superwhite...but I want to prepare my film for broadcast...I wonder though if this is why I'm getting a lot that I have to limit the rgb to 90??? I wouldn't have known to tell the DP please don't use the superwhite settings.
So am I doing this right?
After I output the whole thing, do I color correct the quicktime again when I letterbox it (it's 720x480 to be letterboxed to 1:85:1) before encoding it for the mpeg2? Or if I'm doing it this way is it not necessary?
    Thank you

Also is it stupid to do this when I already went through the film and applied color correction as what is bothering me is a lot of the color correct with the range check shows that little arrow that shows it's on the edge...those are the clips I'm bringing down to code because a lot of them the rgb is too hot...for just preparing a professional dv is it necessary to do what I'm doing?
I really want to prepare it once and not do different color corrects again so if what I'm doing above is correct for broadcast quality though it's going to look more muted on a dvd but maybe that's my confusion as many of the bright hilights giving it that look are on the verge or are clipped.

  • Work Flow with FCP and color correction

I am looking for a decent workflow between FCP and motion when I need to apply color correction to the clips.
I have a goup of clips in FCP that I would like to send to motion, animate them and send them back to FCP. Problem is I want to use FCP for the color correction- nicer than motion's. The, all bad options I have come up with are:
    1. color correct in FCP and then send to Motion- will not work because filters are not applied in send.
    2. Export the clips as one QT self containned movie- I lose the clip partitioning.
    3. Exports individual clips to QT then into Motion- I lose the clip ordering
    4. Color correct after I get back into FCP from Motion- clip boundaries are lost making applying color correction harder.
    Any ideas?
    Rick

I've done this two ways - both variations on the methods you have outlined. First and simplest and one I used last week on a PSP project was to apply the color correction to the Motion clip (.motn file) after it came back from Motion. This is simple and easy, but if you've done titling, you may not want to color correct that.
The second is as you said to render and export a self contained movie, then import it and copy it onto the timeline above the original clip that produced it, thus (at least organizationally) maintaining a connection between them. I then send the quicktime to Motion.
Sorry I cannot think of another better way of doing it...

  • Premiere Pro CS3 then After Effects CS3 for Color Correction?

    Hello All,
I'm at a bit of a loss here, it seems like it's a no brainer to be able to do this. I'm trying to edit my film in Premiere and then use After Effects to do color correction using Color Finesse 2. But there doesn't seem to be ANY way to keep a project so you can continue to edit in premiere while you also keep all your color correction??
You can do color correction in AE and export a premiere project but premiere won't recognize the Color Finesse Filter so you lose all you color correction!
Or I can edit the whole project in premiere and open it in after effects to do color correction, but then if there is a single edit change that needs to be done in premiere again i've once again lost my Color Correction to bring it back.
Is this really the case that I can't use these expensive packages together this way? It seems like there has to be a solution! If Adobe just made it so Premiere kept the "links" to your filters in the project, instead of killing an unrecognizable one. Then when you opened it back in after effects after your edit your Color Correction would still be there.
    Any one have any advice?
    Thanks,
    -Ethan

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, all good ideas.
Aanarav, Your idea to just get Color Finesse for premiere I suppose I could do. It's $545 which isn't exactly pocket change, but it would probably be worth it, if there is another way other than breaking the bank book for software I already own i'd like to try to get away with it.
    Steven Gotz
Dynamic link is unfortunately a feature only of the production studio package which is like $1100 upgrade from what I have...so that's kinda out of the question for me.
    Jon Sands
Great idea here. I really thought it might work since premiere seems to use what are called after effects plugin files too. But after copying and pasting for a while it doesn't look like it actually sees it as a plugin anywhere I paste it. :( If anyone knows of a way to get that to work I would be seriously grateful!
I guess it sounds like the only way out is to spend cash, sigh such is so often the case is seems.

  • Bug - Color Management Photoshop 11 and OS X 10.6 Dual Monitors

I need to know if it's just me, or others are seeing this.
Color management doesn't seem to work properly on dual monitors (MBP + Dell 2408) with Photoshop 11/CS4 and 10.6.
Each of my monitors is independently calibrated and all other apps work fine.  For reference Lightroom 2.4/Preview 5.0/FireFox 3.5.2 all render properly across both monitors.  Under 10.5 Preview 4.X did not render properly across two monitors, I was so happy in 10.6 it finally did, but PS is WAY more important so I'm kinda bummed.
Anyway, this seems to only happen on the 2nd monitor.  If I move the menu bar (Prefs/Displays/Arrangement) to the external monitor making it primary monitor then it works for that monitor, but no longer for the laptop display.  Photoshop render images on the 2nd monitor way washed out, but normally on the primary.
Photoshop 11.0.1 worked fine for me on dual monitors under 10.5.

So if you've read the links above regarding the "default monitor" issue, people have suggested that a potential workaround is to go to System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement>drag the menu bar from the first diplay to the second
Essentially you make your secondary monitor the default display.
For me what this does to PS is that it now displays the matching colors to Lr in the secondary display (which is now the default display with the menu bar at the top), BUT! when I drag the PS window back into my MacBook display it appears OVERLY saturated...
Strangely Lr appears the same in both windows, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY with the same colors, saturation, brightness, just as it did before I made my Dell 2405FPW the default display. Basically, Lr hasn't shifted in color from display to display or even from display to display after making the secondary monitor my new default display. It has retained the same integrity of colors through all these changes.
Which begs the question, if Lr can't handle dual displays and always uses the color profile of the display it begins in (starts running in), then why does it never shift in color and still look exactly the same after I've made my Dell 2405FPW my primary display?
And actually, if you look really really carefully, Lr DOES produce a color shift between displays as you drag it from one screen to the next. It's extremely fast and happens pretty much as you get 0.5 to 1 inch of the window into the secondary display. It's subtle on my monitor too, which leads me to believe that it performs this color correction properly, quickly, and seamlessly.
What if, my Photoshop 10.0 (old version of CS3) is not registering and understanding the secondary display's color profile correctly? What if it really is PS's fault because everything else looks right? Maybe the issue I'm having is different from what others are experiencing, after all we're in 10.6 now and most of these issues were reported in 10.4 and 10.5? I should probably upgrade my PS CS3 and see what happens?
jb, what version of PS do you have?

  • Exporting Movies Losing Color Correction

I have a movie created in iMovie 08 that I've used color correction on the clips. When I export the movie to an .m4v file or .mov file, the movie plays as expected with the color corrections applied.
However, If a most the .mov file to the web, or convert the .mov or .m4v file to an .flv file for playing in a Flash player, all of the color correction is lost and the video clips return to their originals, which is too dark.
Why am I losing the color correction?

I am using Flash CS3. Here are steps I am taking to import the video:
    1. File > Import > Import Video
    2. Selecting Videos (I've tried converting both .mov and .m4v files)
    3. Selecting "Progressive download from a web server"
    4. Choosing Flash 8 - High Quality (700kbps) profile
--- Under Video > Video codec the only two options I have are On2 VP6 or Sorenson Spark
Does this help? Please let me know if there's something more specific that would help answer the question. I'm technically competent, but new to video conversion.
    Thanks for the help.

I just got started with Safari and have a couple questions.
    1. How do I set up the browser to color correct all images and not just those with profiles attached? I greatly prefer the former method a la Firefox 3.0, which is no longer supported anywhere it seems.
    2. How do I set up multiple search engines to select from the drop down search list?

  • HD Plasma Televisions as a Color Correction Monitor

    Hello All In MacNirvana,
I am working on a Powerbook 15" ( see specs below) and work with a lot of video editing with HD video. I am wondering if an HD or HD Plasma TV are suitable to use as monitors for color correction for film and TV when I edit in FCEHD.
And then I should also confim that I will be able to use the TV as a second display. I use a projector sometimes as a monitor by hooking a basic S cable up to the Pwrbk. I would think that this ( or maybe some other fancy cable combo ) would work well with a new HDTV.
I'm a real newbie to the HDTV thing, ( although I'm pretty handy with FCEHD, HD video and Compressor, etc....) so any answers should come in baby talk. Dumb it down for the kids sitting in back.
    Thanks!
    BBP/BR

It is generally a good idea to edit (or at least see the effects of your edits) on a TV vs. the computer monitor. I do this as well, but I am not sure it is being done properly by using a TV as a 2nd monitor (with a S video cable or the DVI out). With S video maybe with DVI you would be using a non-interlaced signal that should scan the entire width of the HDTV and this could be more than a TV viewable area.
I use a FW cable back to a DV camera (NB: a low cost DV camera is a lot less than a DV deck adn you can control it with FC) then connect the AV out to the TV. Since you want the work rendered to NTSC TV so it appears on the TV as it will look when played back.
You can do this as well with FInal Cut - the same DV camera you used to capture as it is already connected - just set FC to FW out and add a TV to the AV jacks on the DV camera.

  • Color correction for tube vs lcd tv's?

I did a few searches, and couldn't find anything on this topic. I know color correction is a big thing and I want to take full advantage of it, but one thing confuses me. If I shoot some footage, import, not do any color correction, burn dvd, and play that DVD on a LCD TV, wouldn't the color be the same? I know broadcast monitors are great for doing color correction, but isn't that for if you're going to watch the video on a tube or older tv? How does that work? Thanks.

It is best to get a professionally balanced LCD or CRT display for color correction.
WHY? Here is the BARNEY explaination:
Go to Best Buy, Circuit City...Sears...and look at all the LCD and plasma TVs. Notice that not one matches the other in color. Many waaaayyy off.
If you get a pro monitor and set it up properly, you know your colors are what they are SUPPOSED to be. Unfortunately, as your little experiment at Best Buy showed you...no one will see that perfect color correction. You know that your colors are right, and that most sets are wrong....but at least your colors are right.
Now, lets not have this topic go on for pages...

  • Color correcting in multiclip

just finsihed an mc with 6 angles. 1000's of edits. can i color correct one angle and have it effect that angle's edits throughout the whole timeline? i would hate to have to go to every edit and copy attributes. thx in advance!

  • Color Corrections iPhoto '09

Color corrections made in iPhoto '09 do not apply in iWeb '09. Is there a way to get these edits to show-up across the board in the iLife Media browser. So that edits work in the other iApps?

If I understand correctly you make a color correction in iPhoto and then open iWeb and access the iPhoto photo using the media browser and you do not get the color correction (you are not going directly into the iPhoto library)
In that case the fires thing to try is quitting iPhoto and deleting the iPhoto preference file - "your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist - when you launch iPhoto it will create a new default preference file - reset any user preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it

  • Color shift between play and pause

    Hello,
On CC 7.0 and 7.1, I noticed there is an important color shift between pausing and playing my timeline when using "CineForm Visually Perfect" encoded source material.
This is especially noticeable on reds.
Using other codecs, there is no such shift.
My video card is a Geforce 650M. At first, I thaught it might be related to the video overlay settings of the card, but there are no such settings in the control panel.
Besides, using Quicktime to play the source produces no shift as well.
As I am often doing color correction using Premiere, and as I have dropped Avid exactly because I always had this same problem (when using a profiled calibrated screen), I would like to know precisely what is going on. As I'm regularly producing shows for broadcast, it is a real problem not to be sure whether what you see matches the final exported output in all circumstances.
NB : For the need of searching the cause of this problem I disabled any custom profiling of my screen.
    Thanks ! for any answers.
    Fred

Sure and thanks. But nevertheless, if you color correct using a calibrated screen, and produce for the web ; or if you do a first pass of color correction before the ultimate pass happens with a "properly calibrated TV", wouldn't you like that your paused frame would look like your playing frame ?

  • Color Correction - FCE has me feeling blue

I have a clip a few seconds long, shot indoors and lit by a halogen lamp. I know, I know, but's that what I did. It has a strong overall blueish cast which looks very cold.
Is there a simple way using Color Correction to warm and correct the colors? The Color Correction literature is copious and daunting and I don't really want to spend the time to learn all about Color Correction at this time. I need a quick fix so that I can finish my movie. ( A vast and impatient public is holding its breath.) A suggestion really would be appreciated.
If I make it yellower, won't that give me an overall green tint? Red, a purple haze?

If you're interested, Izzy has a free tutorial that as I recall covers the subject of making video feel colder (or in your case) warmer by using the Color Corrector filter. The tutorial video is under chapter 3 on this page:

If you don't want to watch a slightly longer tutorial though, Tom's tip should do the trick.

  • Color Correction Won't stick

    Hello all,
    FCP 3.0
I have range check turned on and get the exclamation point.
I apply Color Correction 3 way and lower the whites until I get the green arrow and render. I check the clip again and the filter was not applied. No CC was done.??????
Yet it rendered for the amount of time it said it was going to render. Tried pasting the CC filter forward from the CC window by hitting the 1 and 2 and yet it doesn't work.
    Thanks,
    Al

when you say the filter was not applied are you saying that the filter disappears from the filter list for the clip?
just for reference heres a workflow i've found helpful when adding and adjusting filters:
before you correct, change your playhead sync mode to open (View > Playhead Sync > Open). that way you can be sure that the clip you are viewing in the canvas window is the same clip you are adjusting in the viewer window. drag and drop the filter or otherwise apply the filter to a clip in the timeline. move the playhead so that you are looking at that clip in the canvas. adjust the settings for the filter controls in the viewer window.
