Color Difference - Camera Raw & Nikon Raw NEF

Hello everybody
When i open a Nikon Raw file in Camera Raw (Photosop CC) I notice a distinct color-difference between the integrated preview image in the Raw file and the camera Raw standard.
I want to start with the exact same color how it came from the camera.
Refers to Nikon D300 or D800 in Raw / Nef format.
left, from Camera Raw 8.4.1 "Camera Raw Standard"
right, integrated preview from the original raw-file
Mostly i have the difference in Blue, it's too much cyan in there an looks not "natural"!
thanks for help

The third icon in from the right (looks like a camera) called camera calibrations is where the presets live that supposedly match that of your camera.
Even though you use those presets, you are not done. To match what you see in your camera, you must manually adjust the sliders under the basic tab until it does match.
What you see in your camera is a processed image, which is applied to a jpg only. The raw file is just that raw, no processing is done to it. Think of it as a negative. It is your permanent record of the image. Camera raw is then used to manually set up the image to your personal liking. Which does a better job the camera or yourself, is dependent on your skills. You can get details out of that raw file that the camera can not.
When you find you are placing the sliders in certain location more than once, then it is time to create a preset in camera raw that stores those settings. The more you use camera raw, more you can see when your own preset can be used (even as a starting point) and when it is time to do everything manually.
So in other words it is going to take time to 1)get a keen eye 2)understand the subtle differences in what each setting does and 3) collect a library of presets that you can use time and again.

  • Can't open RAW Nikon files (NEF) using PS3 10.0 running 10.6.8 , think there is a conflict with camera Raw plug-in. Can't open raw images in bridge or photoshop.

I think I may have a Camera Raw plug-in conflict or plug in may be in the wrong place. In both PS3 and Bridge Nikon raw files (NEF) will not open. I've noticed that in photoshop in the pull down menu-about plug-in, I have 2 Camera Raw (s) listed, getting info one is 4.0, the other 4.6.0.30. It appears that my files and .xmp are 4.0 just by searching for 'Camera Raw' either 4. or 4.6 in spotlight. nothing is listed in spotlight under camera raw 4.6, but all my images are listed in the spotlight if I search for camera raw 4.0! I can not open either in Bridge or Photoshop CS3 I just receive the error message 'could not complete this request because photoshop does not reconize this type of file'. any help would this is greatfully appreciated. Thanks

Well if you have a fairly new Nikon camera PS CS3 will not have the proper version of ACR to support that camera.
You could use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the NEF files to DNGs or you can update PS to a newer version that does have support for newer cameras or you could buy Adobe Lightroom V4 which also has support for the newer Nikon cameras.

  • Canon raw, Nikon raw and CS4

I work with both canon and nikon raw files. My CS4 currently recognizes my nikon files but is not recognizing my canon files. Anyone know how to get in there and have it recognize both?

The 50D was released around the same time as CS4 became available, so the Canon 50D was first supported in both ACR 4.6 (the last version for CS3) and ACR 5.1 (the second version for CS4).
You can check the version of ACR PS-CS4 thinks it can use by going to:  Photoshop (Menu) / Help / About Plug-in > Camera RAW... where multiple entries for Camera RAW could result in the behavior you're seeing.
How did you update to ACR 5.3: via an extract from the compressed-archive and then a manual copy to the same folder as the older version of ACR overwriting it, or did you download and run the installer-program to perform the update for you?  If one method isn't successful you could try the other.  Both the archive and the installer are available from the ACR 5.3 link off of http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
And if you feel like it, the beta release candidate for ACR 5.4 is available at Adobe Labs:  http://labs.adobe.com/
I have both PS-CS4 and PSE7 installed and running the updater only updated Photoshop's ACR, and I had to manually copy the .8BI over to the PSE7 location.
If none of this helps, are you on a 32-bit or 64-bit platform and are you on Windows or Mac.

  • Colors differences between jpg and raw - Lightroom 4.1

    Dear All,
I have a doubt on colors and monitor profile. I am using an imac with monitor calibrated with Spyder pro3 and shoot photos with a Canon 500D (RAW+JPG).
I recently added a cir polarized filter to my camera, and really satisfied of colors I see in the camera screen, and the same colors I see on my imac when I look at jpg files. Unfortunately when I open photos on Lightroom 4.1, colors seems the same while loading the picture (probably reading the jpg) but than suddenly changes when rendering the preview and in develop module. Colors seems less vivid like missing some contrast (in attachment an example of the same file opened with lightroom and apple preview in raw and jpg).
I know that jpg created by camera are different from raw files, but actually never had such a difference in colors with all other photos I shoot before. Is this because of the filter or do I have to set anything in particular in lightroom, such as monitor profile or others?
Thank you for your kind advices, have a nice day,
    dk

  • Using the Nikon RAW NEF format and Nikon Capture NX.

This is about using the RAW NEF format in Aperture together with RAW NEF capable editing programs, specifically Nikon Capture NX.
I basically agree with Aperture that it is a "workflow tool" and NOT a photo editor with all the bells and whistles of Photoshop or Nikon Capture. Apple fixed the most basic level of NEF conversion with version 1.1, great!
However, as a workflow tool for RAW images, I cannot seem to figure out how to use RAW (Nikon's NEF) files efficiently with the new Nikon Capture NX.
Nikon Capture NX is quite an interesting alternative to Photoshop. (I cannot wait or the Universal version, as with Photoshop, but that is another matter.) I like the work flow idea it uses, and I like that it edits the RAW NEF files directly, layering the edits on the RAW data. If I open an edited NEF file in Photoshop using the Nikon Plug-in, the result looks great. If I open the same file with Aperture (or using the Adobe RAW plugin) the result is basically an unedited version of the RAW NEF file. This is very disappointing.
It seems I need to export the file from Nikon Capture as a TIFF or JPG. The TIFF gives good results but takes up about 10x more disc space. With the JPG I must give up the 16-bit per channel color depth. Neither allow me to have a "RAW workflow" as advertised by Aperture.
What am I missing? Is this something Apple is going to work on by working more closely with Nikon (and Cannon)? (I figure Nikon keeps their conversion algorithms secret.)
Or are we out of luck here?

    Macbook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

How do I know? Well if you change the white balance settings in-camera, different numbers come thru in Aperture. But the numbers in Aperture, ACR and the presumed numbers in-camera do not match. I wrote Nikon about this quite a while ago and they wrote back saying we do not know how other people interprete our proprietary WB numbers. See note below for additional insight as how you might look further into it
"The shooting data I referenced is available in Nikon View Browser when viewing your images. Looking at all the images at once, it is easy to compare changes made to the camera by quickly clicking on the separate thumbnails. They displayed the differences I had mentioned before. If you do not already have the software, you can download it here:
Title: Nikon View 6.2.7 Full Version - Windows
    URL: http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=13760&pcreated=1131989543
Nikon Capture will not report a temperature value for White Balance, unless a manual Kelvin setting is selected using the option in the D200. As I mentioned before, Auto White Balance, and other Auto settings in the camera may not deliver a consistent result in a burst or as separate still frames even if the subject has not moved or changed. You have a cast on that one image using Auto White Balance. This is not uncommon, just choose a different value. The value may not even accurately reflect what situation you are in. It may be sunny, and you choose cloudy. The White Balance is not measuring the ambient light, it's used to measure the temperature of the light reflecting off your subject. The closer your subject is to white, the closer the value. This is why a preset is taken with a white or neutral gray card.
Since Auto White Balance covers a wide range of temperature, the exact value is not recorded anywhere that I know of. In addition, all White Balance temperatures are approximate values, as per the manual page 35. Having a cast on an image while using Auto White Balance is very possible, just choose another value more suited to the ambient light.
Set the White Balance to K , and capture an image, and this will be reported by the shooting data in Nikon Capture. I have no idea whether ACR is reporting an accurate value or not, we do not support that software, but check this value against what you see in there software."

    Steven

  • Nikon D70 NEF in Camera Raw 4.2

    Hi there,
I'm new to the forum. I have two questions. I have searched the User Forum and Adobe site in general in hopes of finding answers, but could not.
First question. Is Nikon D70 NEF compatible with Camera Raw 4.2?
Second question. When I open my Nikon D70 NEF files in Camera Raw 4.2, all the photos look extremely over exposed. The highlights are completely burned out, to the point where I can hardly recover them.
I tried taking a dual-mode photo (a NEF and JPEG captured at same time with one shot). When I open them both in Capture 4.2, the NEF version is still way over exposed and the JPEG version is normally exposed. The exposures look so completely different, yet all the exposure settings are exactly the same.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem?
Thanks so much for any insight you can provide.

The results of my conversion, based on the image you uploaded to
http://download.yousendit.com/D47FE36E76602801 seem to be exactly the same ones that were discussed here as recently as yesterday:

The "overexposed" phenomenon you are seeing must be a monitor profile and/or color management issue.

    Hey,
Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
    2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs  with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right?    Am I missing anything.   here?    Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work?   Will I be at any disadvantage.   Am I missing anything.   here?

  • Camera-raw plugin for NEF files, made with the new Nikon D7200

Hi, does anyone know when there will be a camera-raw plugin for NEF files made with the new Nikon D7200?

I think that camera is too new. Even the DNG converter will not support it. If you have Nikon software with the camera, you could convert to tiff and then use the tiff files in Elements whilst awaiting the next Camera Raw update for PSE13.

We have the problem only for Nikon D50 and only in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Camera Raw 7.3 and Photoshop Lightroom 4. (Not in CS5. Not for Nikon D5100 or D7000 or Canon S95) .
There is a more detailed posting at photoshop.com.

The above list show the current camera models supported by Adobe Camera Raw (plugin for PS CC) and Lightroom 5.3.
You will see that the Df Raw support was provided in the latest version of LR 5.3.   Support for the D300s was introduced in LR 2.5. (the NEF files are different.)
Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw can only be updated after the camera manufacturer has produced the camera and made it publicly available. If you are using an earlier version of Lightroom then that is your problem.
Please post details of the version you are using at present.

  • Getting Nikon D3100 NEF Photos Into CS4 Camera Raw

I am a novice photographer (some of my work is here: http://www.chrisinmotion.com/office1.htm). I recently bought a Nikon D3100 DSLR but can't for the life of me get any of the Native NEF images to open in Photoshop CS4 Camera Raw. What steps do I need to follow to accomplish this task and what additional software do I need to download. I have updated CS4 with all the plug-ins. I would be ever so grateful for a step by step outline. Thank you. -- Chris

The Nikon D3100 is NOT supported by any version of Adobe Camera Raw that runs with CS4.  There will never be any updates to CS4.
    You have three options:
    1.— Upgrade to CS5; or
2.— Download the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, currently 6.4, and use it to convert your raw Nikon files to raw DNG files first, then open those raw DNG files in Adobe Camera Raw 5.7 hosted by Photoshop 11.0.2 ("CS4"); or
    3.— Use the Nikon software.

  • Camera RAW (Nikon NEF)

Just bought the new Lightroom 5 and went to work. Now I looked in the compatability list and saw that I will need a Lightroom better dan 3.3 for my camera, no problem 5 is.
Maybe I'm to dumb but there is no support for any Nikon camera. What now?
    Please advise.
    Roel

This discussion probably belongs in the Lightroom forum, not the Adobe Camera Raw forum which is mostly about the ACR plug-in for Photoshop, but I’ll answer, anyway:
LR has support for many Nikon cameras.  How are you judging the lack of support?  What are you doing that doesn’t work how you expect it to?
As a first guess, if you have a newer Nikon camera and are using a very old Nikon Transfer 1 or View NX, something that came with an old Nikon camera to copy your NEF files from your camera to your hard-drive then the obsolete Nikon software is corrupting your NEFs so that LR doesn’t recognize them.
The solution for ne4w NEFs is to either use a version of View NX2 that is new like your camera, or stop using Nikon software to transfer your files and use Lightroom, or just use Finder of Explorer to copy the NEFs to where they should be on your hard-drive and import from there.
Another guess is that you’re trying to open an NEF with LR5 instead of using LR5 to create a LR catalog database, and then using LR’s File / Import to instruct LR where the NEF files are.
