Combining mpg and avi footage

Hi,
I am trying to pull together video footage taken at my brother-in-laws wedding.  The tape footage is .avi which is supported by premier pro but the footage taken on a Sony HDD digital camera is saved as .mpg and comes up as an unsupported format, it is also not recognised as a recording device in a capture screen.  I have spent the afternoon trying converters to get it into avi but it then plays in slow motion or is a still because I am using trail versions.  Have you any ideas?? I need to work it out quickly as once I go home in 5 days I will have no time to look at it.  I am already planning an all nighter!!
I do want to combine the two different videos so it plays as one.
Thank you Sarah

Sarah,
You will not be able to Capture from the HDD camera in PrPro. As Harm mentions, if you have the trial, you cannot do anything regarding MPEG.
You will need to copy over the .MPEG (not sure if it writes this as a .VOB, or a straight MPEG file, to your computer, and then convert that/those file(s) to DV-AVI Type II, and then Import that/those file(s), into PrPro. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but there are free conversion programs that do it too, like Prism. Then, you will edit, and Export as DV-AVI to be used by an authoring program. With the trial, you will not have Encore, Adobe's excellent authoring app. Still, there are many others, that work, though not nearly so well. I think that Roxio, Nero and CyberLink have some authoring capabilities in certain of their programs. I do not use anything but Encore, so do not know how well, or poorly, these other programs function.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS - if the other camera records to miniDVD, or uses the .VOB container, this ARTICLE will give you some background on that "format."

  • Converting mpg and avi.

hey everybody, Ive been scanning these forums for information on adding video into the 5th gen ipod , Ive learned alot of things but surprisingly theres not much information on converting mpg and avi files without quicktime pro. In my opinion Id rather have many music videos, live performances etc, than making the effort of coding 2 hour long dvd movies. so ive tried FortyTwoDVDVxPlus http://ipsp.kaisakura.com/fortytwovx.php and this program is great for just that, just drag the avi or mpg in and select ipod as the output and thats it. Without the license you can only get 10 minutes of any file, none of my music videos are that long. so it codes a 4 minute music video into .m4v in less than 4 minutes. itunes opens them up and im just waiting to see if my ipod will play them. if it goes smooth I plan on buying the license, hope this helps.

I think .avi is a container, not a format. You can try with flip4mac and create windows media files (if you can't create any other format powerpoint accepts). On the other hand, if you have iWork-I think Keynote can be viewed from powerpoint.

I use the Nomad Explorer software, but, depending on you machine, firmware... there probably are different ways. What operating system (PC) do you have and what firmware (mp3 player)?

  • Encore CS3 - Hangs and import problems with menus and avi footage with audio tracks present.

I'm trying to import some footage files in .avi format into Encore CS3 and am having several problems.
In what follows when I say "crash" I mean Encore quits with a standard Windows error. When I say "hang" I mean Encore does not quit but rather becomes an unresponsive process that must be killed manually using Windows Task Manager.
    My System:
    WinXP Pro SP2
2.93 GHz Intel Celeron CPU - single core
    Intel PERL mobo
    3GB 400MHz RAM
    NVidia 7800GS video
I mention these specs however I am not experiencing any hardware
related bugs or issues (like out of memory or video driver crashes
etc) when using any CS3 app.
The footage files (as reported by GSpot) and problems I am seeing. In all cases GSpot reports that I have the appropriate codec installed:
    footage1.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, Dolby AC3 48kHz 192kb/s, 716834 KB
Attempting to import as timeline causes Encore CS3 to hang.
Importing as an Asset allows it to import but when I try to click
on it in the project windown to add it to a new empty timeline,
Encore hangs. It plays fine in Windows Media Player.
    footage2.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG-1 Layer 3 48kHz 128kb/s, 718302 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no audio.
    footage3.avi - Dx50 XVid 1.0.3, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 112kb/s, 717606 KB
Imports fine as either a timeline or asset but no audio track comes
with it, even though there is an audio track in the footage. It plays
fine in Windows Media Player. Video imports perfectly, just no
audio. I tried converting this one using AVS to both MPEG3 and DivX,
each using MPEG1-Layer3 44kHz 192kb/s audio, and got the same issue
upon importing into Encore CS3. I also loaded it into Camtasia
Studio and it looked fine over there. The audio was present and I
was able to export it as a .WAV file. When I tried looking at the
file in Soundbooth CS3, there was no audio track or, more
accurately, the audio track was a flat line.
By way of comparison these are importing perfectly:
    footage4.avi - XVID XviD 1.1.0 Beta2, MPEG1-Layer3 48kHz 189kb/s Two mono
    channels LAME3.96r, 717436 KB.

Although this one imported & transcoded correctly, when I went to
build it to a DVD image file I got some strange errors during the
"planning video" stage that prevented the process from completing.
Unfortunately I neglected to write down the error message I recieved
which read like quite nonsensical babble to me, and I have since
deleted the project folder. I remember it was not a memory or
display related error and it included a timestamp where the error
was happening. I played the footage in the preview panel thru the
identified timestamp but it previewed perfectly without even a
jitter in either the video or audio. Took forever to transcode so I
doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon.
Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). Another issue I am having is with the motion menus. I burned a DVD and it does not load correctly in one of my DVD players (a Sony rdr-gx330 recorder/player). It appears to take extra time to recognize the disk, the startup (first-play) menu does not show automatically, and I must press the Main Menu button on the remote control to make it appear. Other than that it seems to play ok in that player. Also tested it in 2 other DVD players (a Panasonic and Zenith) and it worked just fine like it's supposed to in them. Also plays perfectly in my computer's DVD player/burner using Windows Media Player v10. I tried burning to Memorex +RW single-layer single-sided disks at 6, 7, & 8Mbps project settings but got the exact same result every time.
Encore CS3 crashes fairly often during authoring, particularly during imports, and when I go to edit things like calling up a timeline in the timeline panel, dragging footage into an existing timeline, or changing button links in a menu etc.. I have also experienced seemingly random hangs even more often, probably 5 or 6 times as often as a crash. Saving the project after every little change I make, then closing and restarting Encore allows me to make progress albeit at a significantly reduced workflow rate. Accessing Photoshop from Encore appears to be working flawlessly so far aside from the slow load times. Encore hangs sometimes during video transcoding, repeat the process and it works ok. If I try to import a menu from the library after importing my footage files, Encore hangs trying to import it either at the 50% mark or the 99% mark (it varies even with the same exact menu selected from the library). If I import the menu first and the footage after, then no problems. Also trying to render motion menus after importing footage causes Encore to hang, render before footage import and everything works ok. Interestingly enough, previewing my project in Encore's monitor or preview panels works perfectly even in High quality mode -- in fact it operates quite smoothly in comparison to other apps I have tried. Although those footage files that had missing audio tracks on import obviously played silently, I have yet to experience a hang or crash during a preview or when scrubbing through a timeline in the monitor panel.
The last problem I've seen is with the project cache files. It doesn't always get rid of cache files when stuff is deleted from the project. I was working on one project and surprisingly ran out of disk space. When I tracked it down I found that there were some two dozen copies of a footage file I had repeatedly imported and deleted from the project still sitting in the cache folder. The file was an avi about 2GB so it was taking up some 40 GB of disk space for stuff that was no longer in the project. I tried shutting down Encore and manually deleting all the cache files, and that worked for most of them, but there was one 2GB file that kept reappearing in the cache folder even though it was no longer in the project. The XML file in the cache folder still had references to it in there so I can only assume that was the reason it kept showing up. I eventually had to delete and totally recreate the project from scratch to regain my lost disk space. This included having to sit thru a 6 hour long transcoding session which pissed me off to no end.
Encore CS3 appears on the surface to be a very powerful, feature rich, and approachable app with a simple easy to use interface, but it is awfully bugged in just about every area I have explored and still needs lots and lots of work for it to be really useful. Frankly for me it is pretty damn annoying that I have invested so much money in this suite only to find several of the apps in it (Encore & Premiere in particular) behaving this poorly. In my opinion every single app in the suite exhibits lousy performance whenever you must do anything at all involving the disk from the time you click to start it up until the time you click to close it down. Several of them are just as seriously bugged as Encore too, and being a long time Photoshop v5.5 user I expected much more from Adobe. Even Photoshop is two or three times as slow now (e.g. it takes about 20-30 seconds to simply create an empty 500x500 pixel image file and almost a full minute to load a 30x60 pixel single-layer gif). So far I have attempted to create 6 DVDs using Encore and after 3 weeks of effort have only succeeded in getting one of them onto a final disk -- and that one is kinda limping to work correctly in my DVD player. Three of those projects became so corrupted while working on them that I had to delete them completely and recreate them from scratch, only to find that I still couldn't get them to completion for one reason or another. Seriously disappointing.

I have footage shot with a HD Camera and footage from another cameara that only supports DV. Is there any reason why these cannot both be captured and saved in the same project, and then the appropraite Clips put in the desired sequence? I recall reading that these should not be mixed, albiet I am not certain about that.

  • Reduced quality of .vob and avi files

    Hi Guys
    I need some help please.
I am working on a trail version of adobe elements 10 on a new macbook pro lion.
    No problem installing application.
When I import video either in vob from dvd or avi format, the quality of the video is reduced tremendously, there are no white black lines, no jumping, just low quality.
On the bottom right hand side, the application tells me that it is doing something called conforming.
When I play the same video in vlc on the mac, or on my pc, the video runs fine with no problems and the picture is crystal clear.
I tried the things suggested in support:
    1. Rendering
    2. Checked the fps are the same as the original video ie 25 fps
    3. Tried using application to convert vob file to mp4 of all different levels of quality using external program (wondershare video converter ultimate for mac)
Elements looks like a great program, the closest to the magix I used to run on my pc, but the problem at the moment is that the quality is reduced.
    Is there a codec problem?
The vob and avi files are not recognized by quicktime.
    Please let me know asap
    Thanks
    Simon

Much has to do with which project settings you've selected in Premiere Elements when you set up your project. (For DVD video, you should be using the Hard Disk Camcorder/standard definition settings for your project.) You also should not mix DVD and AVI footage in a project. They interlace very differently and this can cause problems in your output.
Much also depends on where your AVIs are coming from. Unless your AVIs are from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection, you are likely working with a codec that is not fully compatible with the program. Where did these AVIs come from?
Conforming is an important part of the process of the program rendering non-workflow formats (such as DVD VOB files) into editable workflow formats. Allow the program the fully conform your DVD video and use the proper project presets and you should get results that are virtually identical to the original footage.
Parts 1 and 2 of my free 8 part Basic Training tutorials at Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com will help  you understand how and why project set-up and proper footage formats are so important.

  • MOV and AVI Files - Rendering Every Clip In The Timeline

This is just a quick query really. When I try and add certain .mov and .avi footage into final cut express 3.5, the timeline requires the clips to be rendered fully. It also requires a render every time you move the clip or add a transition etc.
If for example I wanted to make a fan film using footage from another source, how would I go about this - it seems very time consuming considering every single shot needs to be fully rendered every time I move it / edit it.

FCE is a resolution specific editing application. It edits DV or HD using the Apple Intermediate Codec. Anything else needs to be converted to one of these formats. It's usually best to convert your media to the correct format before bringing it into FCE.

  • Best "Capture" workflow for projects mixing HDV tape and XDCAM footage

I'm trying to determine the best workflow for projects that combine XDCAM and HDV footage.
I'd obviously do the editing in a project designed for XDCAM, as that's the higher quality footage,
and render the HDV clips in the XDCAM timeline...ending up with an XDCAM end product.
I'd use SONY'S XDCAM TRANSFER to get the clips into FCP.
My question concerns capturing the HDV footage in this scenario. I've never been able to get
the Log and Capture feature for HDV footage to work, unless I've created an HDV project and am capturing into that HDV project.
So, generally, I create an HDV project, open the log and capture utility which is now set to capture HDV, and then capture the footage. I then close that project and create a new project, designed for XDCAM footage. I use XDCAM Transfer to get the XDCAM footage into the project, and I import
the previously captured HDV footage into that browser and start editing, rendering the HDV in the XDCAM timeline.
My question...do I really have to open, what is essentially a "fake" HDV project just to capture that HDV footage? You don't seem to have the option of capturing HDV footage (out of a camera or HDV tape deck) directly into an XDCAM project. If I try to change the capture or audio video settings of the XDCAM project to HDV, you get messages saying you can't do it.
Is there something I'm missing or a more streamlined way of doing this?
Thanks in advance for any input.

No need to jump through these hoops. Just set yourself up with a universal Easy Setup that will handle both. Choose your regular XDCAM HD Easy Setup then open the Audio / Video Settings window and change the Capture Preset to "HDV" and the Device Control Preset to "HDV Firewire" ... then click the "Create Easy Setup" button and save it for recall whenever needed.
Regarding the overall workflow, I'd seriously question the idea of creating XDCAM HD masters. No real benefit to that unless you need to export to XDCAM HD. Much better would be export your final master as Apple ProRes 422.
    Best

  • Converting .mpg and .mov to .avi

    I am on OS X 10.4.5 and Quicktime 7.0.4
I am trying to convert .mov and .mpg to .avi files. This is so that I can insert these files into a powerpoint presentation and they will run better. I downloaded iSquint but that only seems to help me convert video files to mpg4.
Any advice on how to save as an avi?

I think .avi is a container, not a format. You can try with flip4mac and create windows media files (if you can't create any other format powerpoint accepts). On the other hand, if you have iWork-I think Keynote can be viewed from powerpoint.

I can't watch a video with the extension mpg or avi or anyother one using flexplayer for my ipad. Which player i can download to watch the videos that i receive in my email?

Unfortunatelly, something’s not working fine on Flexplayer during the last cupple of months. A lot of updates have been released lately and the problems persist. Since iOS 6 was on the air, the problems became even worst. It’s a shame, but I think it’s time to change the app we are using. The alternative I found is 8Player, it works fine, similar to Flexplayer (but nicer interfase), and the best is that it supports “.flv” (not sure Flexplayer did). You can save your files to your hard disc using iTunes and then transfer them again to your idevice, once you’ve installed 8Player. I hope this helps. Bye bye Flexplayer!!

  • I have .MPG and .MTS files on my computer. Can I convert at high quality?

I received .MPG and .MTS files from a friend who shot the video clips on a Sony HDR-CX150, and are now on my computer.
Log and Transfer sadly doesn't work because of the disassembled file structure... Total Bummer.
Will these AVCHD camcorders allow me to throw the footage back on the camera, and THEN perform a log and transfer?
(I don't know if my friend still has the manual)
Side note: I bought Aimersoft Total Video Converter and it seemed to work great, but the quality of the video output is AWFUL. I'm so disappointed.

Try MPEG Streamclip for the MPG files. Lots and Lots of posts explaining its use can be found here on the forum.
Did ClipWrap work on the mts files?
iirc, AVCHD seems to be a one way format. It may be worth reading through the camera manual or going to one a website for the camera to see just to see if going backwards is possible.
    Good luck,

  • Import CS3 AVI Footage into CS4

I'm trying to import some footage that I captured on my PC in CS3, into my Mac in CS4. When I open the project that was created in CS3 (PC), on my CS3 (Mac) it comes through fine. But when I convert the project and open it in CS4 (Mac), it wants to render all of the footage in the timeline. Which means the sequence settings aren't matching the footage. Even though the sequence settings are the same as those I used in CS3. Not sure what's going on.
Reason I capture the footage on my PC to begin with is because CS3 and CS4 still will not capture my DVX-100 24p footage correctly on a Mac. So this is my only solution at the time being. I have 34 hours of AVI footage that I'd really like to edit in CS4. Any help would be much appreciated!

Bill, thanks for your response. Sorry for the delay in getting back. The mis-match is precisely what I'm trying to figure out and fix. My sequence presets are as follows:
    GENERAL
    Editing Mode: Quicktime DV 24p

  • Editing SD and HD footage together in one project in FCE

I have both SD and HD footage that I have imported (in addition to still shots) into a project, which is now ready to edit in FCE.  This is my wedding video and I would love to avoid as many problems as possible before I get too far down the road in editing.  Is there anything I should know about combining the SD and HD footage in FCE?  Are there certain settings that I should check before editing?  I am concerned about aspect ratios and how that might ultimately skew the picture when burned to a DVD.  Any basic guidelines that you could provide would be very helpful.  Thanks!

This is great information, thank you.  After reading the responses, (and doing some additional research) I think I'll try create a shortened version of the video using only the HD footage and share via youtube and/or vimeo.  I would also like to produce a longer video (under 1 hour) that includes both my DV and HD footage and burn that DVD for a few people.  Given that I will be burning this to DVD, it seems that I should downsize the HD footage before editing to have it all at the DV level for one sequence in my FCE project.  I have two questions for creating this longer video with the output to DVD:
    1) How to downsize the HD footage: there seems to be several suggestions for this process, so I was wondering which is the most effective (and least time consuming).  Please note that I have already loaded all the clips (DV and HD clips) and still photos into a new project, which took some time.  I hope to be able to leverage that effort in some way (so I don't have to start from scratch again).
         a) Convert the HD footage using Streamclip before bringing it into the project
         b) Select the HD clips and export using Quicktime Conversion, select the DV codec, and resize for DV aspect ratio pixels (either 720 x 365 to match 4:3 DV aspect ratio, or 720 x 405 to match the 16:9 DV aspect ratio)
         c) Put all the HD clips in the project and do a batch export to DV
         d) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, which will automatically downsize them and will then require rendering
         e) Create a DV sequence in FCE and drag all HD clips to the timeline, then highlight all the HD clips, go to Modify > Fit to Sequence, which should resize it to match the sequence settings
         f) Resize the HD footage using a 3rd party app called Compressor before bringing it into the project
    2) Do I still need to crop the footage even after downsizing the HD footage?  I assume that "crop" means that the image will stil be too big for the DV level editing, so part of the image will not fit, so I will need to scale it (or something like that).  Is that right?  It seems very labor intensive to do that for every clip, hopefully this is not the case.
    Thank you for your help!
