Compaq cq50 help

I was given a compaq cq50. it work great but i took it apart to clean the dust out of the fan. after putting it back together it won't turn on, but if i leave the top cover off or just sitting on it. then it will turn on. i look and i can't find whats shorting out. hope someone ran into this problem. thanks for the help i do get.

Compaq CQ50-110US notebook

Laptop issue.
So the other day I was on my laptop and the grpahics of a game become a little buggy. I found it to be a little odd, but was thinking it was acting slow due to low memory.
So, I decided to restart the computer. I logged out of the game, and did the standard restart through windows and it got to the compaq splash art and stopped. It did not load windows and about 1 min after sitting on splash screen the screen went black except for a blinking cursor at the top left.
This concerned me because I also keep alot of information on my laptop for job use. I decided to try and do a repair by doing F11 which is supposed to fix windows, thinking it was a windows error. F11 does nothing.
I can hit all the other options from F-keys and they work but F11 is a no go.
My laptop does not beep on start up and I was told by a friend that if it did then it was the HD that went bad, but nothing.
I really cant take it to a shop because lack of funds at the moment and I would really like to be able to keep the info on my HD, but i need a working computer.
I started looking up the compaq CQ50 problems and fixes and go figure aside from the over heating issues that I have had to deal with, which when i first noticed it, I went about doing everything i could to keep it cool.
Now apparently I have been made aware of just how many issues people have with this laptop and needless to say, i regret buying an HP product.
It is out of warranty and I do not have a boot disk, because they do not ship them with the computers anymore.
Which i was hoping to try and see if it worked.
Would anyone by chance know the issue and possibly help me fix it?

Compaq cq50 problems (solved)

Hi All,
I picked up my new laptop today a compaq cq50.
So far i've not been able to get a single linux disk to work on this machine 32bit or 64
i keep getting machine check exception errors that google reveals is something todo with slightly older kernels.
i have an old install disk that i can get to boot upto the udev section but once it tries to load the ath_pci modules bums out.
so far i have tried the command line brokenmodules=ath5k,ath_pci,ath_hal and still had no luck stopping udev from loading this module.
Any suggestions ?

Just incase anyone else runs into this problem. I made a new install disk using the Larch scripts (very easy to use btw)
with a newer kernel and the archinstall scripts from core.
Worked a charm. Laptop is now running arch and i no longer have nightmares about windows Vista

Compaq CQ50 Gets Hot Even when Cooled

I have a Compaq CQ50- 215NR
I have started Noticing that it gets particualrly hot where the exhaust vents are Especially on tp where the Altec Lansing Logo is for the speakers and this causes the system to act Sluggish.
It Also gets really Hot where the hard Drive is Located So hot in fact it has Burned my legs So i Bought a Laptop cooler But it still gets extremely hot.
Is it Humanly Possible HP can make a freakin Laptop that dont get so hot it can cook an egg or blister your skin???
Can HP actually Put In a Bigger cooler that not only dissapates CPU heat but also a fan for cool air intake for the HDD that also feeds the venting for the CPU Cooler Cause Im seriously thinking about filing a lawsuit against HP for this hazardous Design Flaw in cooling.
Because of this Flaw Will HP Replace this Superhot units with one that gets Cool and wont fry you up like a turkey dinner?

Compaq CQ50 Sound Issues

I've found two sound issues affecting my Compaq cq50-110us (Note: Using latest sound drivers with Windows 7: 4.98.4.60 A
-First one is I wasn't able to use my internal microphone on my laptop, in the Recording Tab it did list the microphone in my laptop but did not respond to any sounds I made. I was able to go around this issue by going into my smart audio configuration and switching settings from "Classic Mode" to "Multi-Stream Mode". This made a duplicate Microphone listing in my Recordings tab that did respond to any noise I made.
-The second and most annoying issue is that when I play any song with heavy bass, or loud sound effect, the internal speakers would sound as if they were popping or crackling, I was able to go around this one by going into my sound device settings and selecting "disable all enhancements" in my enhancements tab. (note: disabling all enhancements one by one did not work, only this option. This stopped any popping or crackling the speakers made.
I would just like to point out these issues so in later drivers they could be resolved as I actively use the enhancements settings.

Sweet! After using Madwifi from the repo and disabling the ath5k module I am in business.
The funny thing is it was actually harder to get wireless working in Ubuntu than Arch (previously had Ubuntu on it).
Arch just works and works well and stuff just doesn't seem to break.

Putting dv6700 hard drive into a Compaq CQ50-115NR

Hello forum,
I have a HP dv6700 and recently the video card had just randomly decided to burn up and not work anymore(typical case). My problem is that I had some things in my hard drive and was wondering if it would be possible if I could remove my HP dv6700 hard drive and put it into my Compaq Presario CQ50-115NR without causing any harm to my Compaq. I know their are other ways to get back the information but I wan to know if this procedure is safe and whether or not it would affect my Compaq in any way isnce I would be putting a hard drive of a differnt computer.
Both computers run on Window Vista, AMD turion chips, NVIDIA graphic cards. Advice would be much apprecaited. Thank you!

You could certainly try doing that, a better choice would be to slave it to a desktop computer. As long as the files are not encrypted you should be able to see them and copy them over.

Old compaq need help

I recently required an old compaq presario 5310US desktop. Yes it's old but it's stable. I tried installing arch on it last night but i failed. I don't know which graphics driver i should install on this old machine. I know for sure it doesn't have nvidia or ati. are you sure about this. what makes you believe that it's the i810 and not just the intel one?

No volume bar [HP Compaq CQ50]

I love my new laptop (HP compaq Presario CQ50 - 120 EP) and it's working fine, but there is one little thing i would like to add: a volume control bar (that appears in screen). There are no problems with volume but no bar or any kind of control volume appears in screen. How can i instal one?

Compaq CQ61 Help.

Ok, so i had some headphones plugged in and TeamSpeak 3 running. The sound from TS3 was coming in the headphones, everything else in the internal speakers. So i clicked on this button: http://tinypic.com/r/2cxt66w/7
And dissconnected the Internal speaker. When i click it now, i get and error from the Troublshooter and the speakers aren't working. I would like some help please, Thanks in advance.

Compaq CQ50-215CA Modem Drivers

I've been running Arch for roughly six months on my CQ50-215CA without issue. However, I recently moved to a rural area where only dial-up is available. For the life of me I can't seem to get the modem to work. It's a Conexant chipset, but I tried all the Linuxant drivers to no avail. Anyone else with a CQ50 get their modem working in Linux? Thanks in advance.

Problem solved, though I have no clue how it was fixed. After getting fed up with trying to get rid of the stuttering I gave up, turned off my laptop and went to bed. Woke up this morning, booted up my laptop with the intent to downgrade to Vista and decided to give it one last try. It works now.

I have compaq cq50. was VISTA upgraded to WIN 7. Recovery disks not working. BOOTMGR compressed

will not boot up. I have 2 recovery disks, the 1 of 2 will take but 2 of 2 disk doesnt run.

If you are trying to use the Vista recovery disks and they are not working, and you can read your Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, then you can make your own Vista installation disk by reading the guidance below.
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.

After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

Compaq CQ50-108CA - Harddrive Failure (#10008) Cannot replace drive?

Ok so here is my issue my 250 gig sata drive has failed, i purchased a replacement western 320 gig (new) but the bios doesnt detect it and in the bios log it still says harddrive failed.
I updated the bios from F07 (2007) to F40 (2008) and still no go.
i tried the same drive (new western 320gig) in another laptop (hp) and its detected.
how weird is that.

the old drive is dead, but i had a few spares used drive.
1- 80 gig sata Seagate (didnt work)
2- 160 gig sata Fujitsu (worked)
so the 160gig worked fine. i think the controler on this board is really picky when it comes to drive.
guess only Toshiba or Fujitsu drive seems to work.

Compaq CQ50-210US inconsistent power

I've exhausted all other resources in my quest to fix this particular laptop. The laptop on rare occasion will stay on, but typically I hit the power button. Then the unit POST's and begins to boot, then I hear a simple "click" and the unit is off. This behavior persists with only RAM, KB, and LCD plugged in. It does this with or without the battery in on and off AC power. I've also replaced the Motherboard of the unit as well as the small logic board under the power button. I'm really at a loss. I'd appreciate any assistance. =]

That's a little strange - in that case, just exit the bios menu for now.
Let me know the following.
Boot from the KillDisk CD again and let me know what drive partitions are listed - see the first image Here for the screen I'm referring to.
