Compiz-standalone appearance

Hi there,
this may be a silly question but im trying to fin out a way to customize the look of my compiz-standalone install, i have installed a them for emerald and now want to know how i can change the rest of the window looks (not just the borders) what packages do i install or commands do i use?
Thanks,
Sisco

I don't know if this is what you are asking for, but if you mean changing the qt and/or gtk theme for applications and such, the most obvious choices are qtconfig (should be there if you have qt installed) and/or lxappearance (it's in the repos), for example.

  • Compiz Standalone?

    I need help with compiz standalone. I have set it up according to the wiki. I can log in using slim. The problem is I cannot set up wireless. the network manager applet does not allow me to connect. Is there a fix and what other packages do I need to run compiz as a standalone window manager?

    A little more info would be cool, like "I get the following error message: xy" or "I tried xy" and whether your interface is up at all.
    And is your user part of the network group?

  • [Solved]Compiz Standalone + Layout switching: how?

    Hi!
    I`m trying Compiz standalone at the moment, and while everything works at the moment, i ran into problems with layout switching. While using Openbox, i had XXKB configured properly to remember all my three layouts (english, russian, latvian ) for every application opened, and AXKB running in tray to show my current layout.
    When i switched to Compiz, xxkb doesn`t work anymore. It shows up in the running processes, but it doesn`t do anything.
    Any other apps i can use with compiz? Any specific configuration in xxkb config file?

    Solved this by installing gxneur.

    Okay solved the problem now. Here's how I did it:
    First I install compiz-alone-utils-git from AUR.
    Change /etc/slim.conf line (remove dbus-launch):
    login_cmd exec ck-launch-session /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
    Change ~/.xinitrc:
    exec compiz-alone-session
    The remaining autostart applications put into ~/.config/compiz/autostart.sh:
    # This shell script is run before Compiz launches.
    # Environment variables set here are passed to the Compiz session.
    # Set a background color
    BG=""
    if which hsetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=hsetroot
    else
    if which esetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=esetroot
    else
    if which xsetroot >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    BG=xsetroot
    fi
    fi
    fi
    test -z $BG || $BG -solid "#202020"
    # D-bus
    if which dbus-launch >/dev/null 2>&1 && test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS"; then
    eval `dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session`
    fi
    # Run XDG autostart things. By default don't run anything desktop-specific
    # See xdg-autostart --help more info
    DESKTOP_ENV="COMPIZ"
    if which /usr/bin/xdg-autostart >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    /usr/bin/xdg-autostart $DESKTOP_ENV
    fi
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
    export _JAVA_OPTIONS='-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=lcd'
    nvidia-settings -l
    sh ~/.fehbg &
    xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources &
    volumeicon &
    xfce4-panel &
    conky &
    covergloobus &
    (you can find the skeleton file within /etc/xdg/compiz/autostart.sh)
    The relevant part is the xdg-autostart part within the autostart.sh it seems.
    Commenting it out resurrects the problem.

  • Compiz-Standalone, KDE...ERGH!

    I pretty much can't decide between the two. I can set up a complete desktop environment with each one, but each has their own pros/cons....I can't decide which would be better if I were allowing others to use my computer (simply b/c they find it convenient to use a computer that's already on, so I created a guest account)...so far, here's what I've gathered from my current Compiz-Standalone setup & KDE setup:
    Compiz pros:
    KUPFER (helps since I can easily browse my files w/o thunar open)
    lightweight
    more eyecandy
    cons:
    I need TWO apps for changing my gtk+ theme completely
    KDE pros: easy usr switching
    plasmoids
    auto-tabbing
    easy configuration
    cons:
    fsrunner breaks consistently, which is the only thing I'd need to work in order to kick kupfer out since I'd be able to pull up most files by typing their names
    recent documents only uses KDE accessed documents (I don't know if there's a way around this)
    it froze when I had the extensions dialog open for OO.o, dunno why
    Also, can someone tell me the pros/cons vs Geany & kate? From what I've seen in their plugins, they seem to share the same feature set except for HTML/XML completion.

    Bralkein wrote:If you like features of Compiz compared to KWin then it's quite easy to swap them and still have an otherwise standard KDE setup, IIRC.
    True, although my mind irritates me with "If you aren't using KWin, remove it from the system!" But removing Kwin from the system w/o taking KDE along with it is impossible.
    Rezero wrote:

    Right. This isn't hard to do at all. I have Compiz running nicely in KDE 4.4 because KWin was choppy. I just set Compiz as the default WM via System Settings -> Default Applications -> Window Manager. There's a slight flicker during KDE's splash while it loads, but it loads before the DE itself. There are a few drawbacks though.
    - Wallpaper plugin doesn't work
    - Desktop activities don't work properly (you can still manage virtual desktops via CCSM)
    - Plasma animations and window previews don't work (but you can use Compiz plugins)
    I believe there's going to be a Compiz release that's more tightly integrated with KDE4, but seeing as how KDE4 is 2 years old and the latest version of Compiz has been "looming" since September '09 who knews when or if that might happen.
    I can do that, but as I said before, it sort of irritates me that I can't uninstall Kwin w/o taking the rest of the KDE w/it (otherwise I'd be fine w/either setup). Having the wallpaper plugin not working is fine for me since I have Plasma handle that if I'm in KDE. As for desktop activities, I don't really use them either, so that'd be fine too. I'm sure there was a plugin in Compiz that said "enable KDE Compatiblity" for fixing the thumbnail problem. Reinstalling KDE quickly to see if that fixes the thumbnail problem you mentioned.
    [EDIT]: Reinstalled KDE and turned on that plugin I mentioned in Compiz. Sometimes my auto-hiding panel at the bottem doesn't pop up and it's animating the logout dialog.
    [EDITEDIT]: Turned off built-in thumbnails and auto-hiding panel seems fine now. I let the system idle for a few minutes and wrote down the amount of RAM for each window manager + my plasma setup. Here's the numbers:
    Compiz+KDE setup: 230.8 MB
    KWin+KDE setup: 234.2 MB
    It doesn't seem that different from each other. (I also now opened the extension manager of OO.o after reinstalling the plugins I had for it, it doesn't seem to crash KDE now)

  • Compiz standalone theming

    hello all I finally got a nice Compiz standalone desktop with tint2 and xfce4panel running but I was wondering how I can change the windows themes, like the colors and stuff.. it all looks very win98 ish and I'm REALLY tired of that look this bugs especially in pcmanfm or any configuration window.
    dont know how to post screenshot....

    use lxappearance, it's in the repos.
    extract the themes in /home/your-user/.themes folder.
    you can also extract icons and cursors in the .icons folder.
    I assume you'll use a gtk theme, so run qtconfig and choose to use gtk+ in "gui style", so the qt applications match the gtk ones (only necessary if you use qt applications, like vlc or clementine, otherwise they'll look old regardless the gtk theme).

  • Compiz Standalone won't start

    Hi, I'd like to run Compiz as a standalone desktop manager. The Arch wiki has a very short section on this, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_Manager, which suggests all that's needed is to edit ~/.xinitrc to start compiz.
    This doesn't work for me, and I simply end up at the CLI prompt with no on-screen error message or anything to indicate why compiz won't start. I'm not even 100% sure it is trying to start!?
    If I try to start compiz from the CLI prompt, I get the following error:
    compiz (core) - Fatal: Cannot open display
    If I start with startx, X will start, but compiz will not.

    By display manager, do you mean something like KDE, XFCE etc?
    If so, then I would really like to just run compiz without any of these. I have got Compiz running OK under KDE, but it takes forever to boot up (ok 1 minute) and I just find KDE to be somewhat .. Kludgy (it has a dated feel IMO). Also there are some weird behaviours in Compiz under KDE. I'm currently using XFCE which is altogether nicer than KDE, but I can't get compiz to work with it at all.

  • [solved]compiz standalone session not working

    So I tried setting up a standalone compiz session with a few graphical apps auto starting but all i get is a black background and a mouse pointer that I can move.
    I've tried consulting the wiki, read the .desktop file documentation available online and tried looking for related options in the lightdm config.
    Example .desktop file:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Version=1.0
    Name=Synapse
    Exec=synapse
    Type=Application
    BTW: I'm typing from my cellphone so I dont know if the font is gigantic or if it's just my display, sorry if the font is huge

    Autostarting programs when using a display manager
    One way in which you could start programs with your Compiz session, when it is started from a display manager, is to use an xprofile file. The xprofile file is similar in syntax to xinitrc - it can contain commands for programs you wish to start with your session. Most display managers will parse commands from an xprofile file by default.
    Alternatively, you could use Compiz's 'Session Management' plugin. This plugin will save running programs on exit and restore them when the session is next started. Simply enable the 'Session Management' plugin in CCSM}.
    Yeah, in the end I figured I should try it even though it was written in the xprofile article it cannot start gui programs and it worked, thanks for the help
    and thanks progandy I"ll check it out as a way to start the gui in the future

  • Power management & media keys Compiz standalone

    Hello everyone
    Just made the full time switch to Arch a week or so ago, have to say it's the best Linux experience I've had! Loving it!
    So I've got it set up using Compiz as a standalone WM with tint2 for navigation. I was curious if anyone could suggest a decent power manager?
    I mainly need this to actually be able to tell my system to shutdown/reboot, right now I've just been using the shell to compensate. I have the gnome-settings-daemon running for gtk management if that opens up more options for me It'd also be handy perhaps having the ability to manage my session, I've been using pkill and it's getting a bit tedious...
    Also, I use the Apple aluminium keyboard with my system which has playback keys (back, play/pause,forward) and volume keys. Right now the only means I have of managing my system's audio output is to use alsamixer, which is somewhat cumbersome. As the gnome-settings-daemon is running, I get the HUD to notify me of the volume change, so I just need some way of managing my volume conveniently. I thought I might be able to do this with the 'commands' module in compiz, but couldn't find any command to suit my needs.
    Thanks in advance, any help is greatly appreciated!
    *!EDIT!* : Okay I figured out the media keys myself. Whilst I looked for a suitable media player for my music, I stumbled upon sonata, once installed one of it's optional installs was 'dbus-python', which I already had on my system, it's comment stated something along the lines of 'function for media keys', so I added it 'dbus-python' to my xinitrc and it worked!
    Chuffed with this, but, I'd still appreciate some advice on a power/session manager
    *!EDIT 2!* : Right, my edit above did work for the volume keys, however I'm still unable to use the playback keys on the keyboard

    Thanks for the reply patrickthebold, I haven't tried that. soon as I'm home from work I'll give it a shot, though I'm not sure what commands I could bind to simulate track back, play/pause, track forward. Hopefully nothing a bit of Google can't solve

  • Compiz (standalone) freezes...

    It's been doing this every morning for the past week and a half. And it actually only does this in the morning, after the PC has been shut down for more than 2 hours..
    If I just reboot or shut down and start it after a few minutes there's no problem whatsoever.
    I only get a moving cursor and a frozen AWN dock and I have to drop to a console to kill and start compiz manually. Also, the CPU usage goes up to 100% because of compiz when this happens.
    Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD4850 (using open source drivers)
    Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? How can I fix this?

    Sounds like a hardware issue to me, if it depends on the temperature.

    When I issue startx, there's a bit of tearing, and then it flashes xterm and finally goes blank. I can't do anything after that. Can't even zap X. I also tried this with the catalyst drivers.

    I fear I may have to use a display manager since killing X doesn't drop me to tty (so I have to do a hard reboot). But I'll get to that later.

    I am pretty sure this is an issue with xorg.conf. I tried starting up a game in twm and it wouldn't run smoothly. The graphics were also pretty horrible.

    yeah, xfe only handles fstab stuff and already mounted disks... but this seems like a universal solution, especially for obscure environments...
    now if I could find an agnostic solution for the "places" plugins on the standard DE's, I'd be good!

  • Desktop/software recommendations for Compiz user?

    Hi all,
    I initially came over to Arch from Ubuntu+Compiz, so of course Gnome+Compiz was a natural fit for me. Have tried KDE a few times, up to 4.2 even, but never really got the hang of it.
    The more I think about it, however, the more I realize that I probably don't really need Gnome, as most of the functionality I need is Compiz-related. I do use a lot of the default Gnome apps, however, as well as the panel (purely for displaying an easy-to-click calendar), but primarily do my launching from Alt-F2 or Gnome-do, whichever comes to mind first. I do find the list of applications helpful, however, since sometimes the name of the application or launcher just slips my mind.
    So, I'm asking for recommendations on how best to proceed. Stay the same (compiz+gnome)? Get rid of gnome, keeping only apps I need (compiz standalone)? Get another desktop with compiz? Get rid of compiz altogether (difficult...)?
    Basically, this is what I use/need from compiz...
    1. Cube (negotiable) - seems the most natural representation of my multiple workspaces. Hasn't seen much use recently though, due to....
    2. THE SCALE PLUGIN - this has GOT to be my favourite compiz plugin, use it all the time to see what I have running currently and quickly switch windows. Alt-tab is SERIOUSLY underused on my setup.
    3. Desktop zoom - I sit pretty far away from my screens, and for detail work I like to zoom the entire desktop in with a simple <Super>mouse-scroll.
    4. Adjustable Window transparency - I use this for image comparisons, or just to read something while typing it into the terminal/text editor/whatever.
    Other desktop-related apps I have running are cairo-dock (originally meant it as a gnome-panel replacement, but didn't like the calendar implementation. Launch frequently-used apps from it though), Gnome-do (no explanation needed), and the requisite conky. I'm not actually sure whether cairo-dock has any gnome dependencies for operation... if so please let me know. I guess I could do without cairo-dock, at least, since its just a convenient store for all my launchers, at least till gnome-do goes multi-monitor (separate X) capable.
    So, on to my frequently-used apps, related to Gnome.
    1. Evolution - I was a Thunderbird user in Windows and Ubuntu, but Evo was just quite nicely integrated to the whole Gnome environment, like the calendar and stuff, unlike the cool-but-feels-a-bit-hackish Lightning plugin for Thunderbird (I haven't tried v3 with integration though). This is pretty essential now as the only means of downloading my Microsoft Exchange mail at work.
    2. Firefox - More gtk than Gnome, just thought I'd throw it out. Don't think this will be a problem in any case.
    3. Nautilus - I understand this is tightly integrated to Gnome. Have tried PCManFM, Thunar, and EmelFM2, with the last one being the best in my opinion, but always came back to Nautilus, just like the interface (wish for dual-pane though). I guess this could be adjusted pretty easily.
    So, any suggestions? I know most here have the opinion that everything eventually ends with tiling WMs, but that's a bit scary for me, plus I'm not sure if desktop zoom and adjustable transparency are achievable (especially for one-on-top-of-the-other comparison of images, as I do image-related research, and that's the fastest way to confirm the accuracy of my results). I do realize, however, that my love of the Scale plugin can be seen as a stopgap because I don't use a REAL tiling WM... Suggestions welcome, and sorry for the extra-long post.

    Well, seeing as compiz is a WM any of the other WMs are out. Essentially then, you're left with KDE + Compiz, standalone or one of the lighter DEs.
    If you're not a fan of KDE (same here, I try it every two point releases, but I can never get used to how it does things) then the first option is pretty much out. That and I'm sure the KDE team isn't focusing much on compiz integration, what with their own effects.
    Standalone works (with a bit of effort for start-up scripts etc). However, you may miss some of the little DE additions you don't notice until they're gone (like copy&paste that keeps the data even after the app you copied from has closed).
    I'd say you should look into XFCE or LXDE. My suggestion is XFCE. It's pretty much GNOME-lite. Similar panel, similar settings, similar little extras like a settings daemon.
    As for the apps - I've never had any problems running GNOME apps in it (though the libraries add to the RAM usage), it uses GTK+ anyway, and some of the XFCE apps are really great (Mousepad is a great little text editor if you just want to jot down some stuff and Thunar is stable and fast).
    Firefox will only ever have problems if you're running it in KDE, and that's just appearance-based stuff.
    The scale plugin - Awesome has a project called Revelation that I believe implements this. Compiz is your best bet here, though.
    Hope this helps.
