Components of Instant Client - how about NLS

Hi,
since Instant Client only includes some library files, how could the Global Language Support work without files under $ORACLE_HOME/nls/data provided?
My testing web page of PHP just displays "??" from database.
How do I make sure the Linux client and 10g server(Windows)have matching character resources; e.g., is NLS_LANG=TRADITIONAL CHINESE_TAIWAN.ZHT32EUC correct?
Is there any approach to get nls/data files with only "Instant Client" lib installed.
Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot as you are a guest! It works after NLS_LANG character set to be ZHT16BIG5 in Apache envvars file.
Previously "TRADITIONAL CHINESE_TAIWAN.ZHT32EUC" environmental variable was set in /etc/profile and web page but displayed only garbled characters without ORA_ error message.

  • OCIEnvCreate fails with -1 using Instant Client 10.2.0.1 on Windows XP

I have a working application (using the full Oracle install) and I'm trying to see if I can get it to work using the instant client. I installed the client, changed my path and rebooted. According to the instant client how to install - it should just work but then if everything worked like it was documented then lots of support folks wouldn't have jobs. The only parameter I'm setting is the OCI_THREADED flag. The database is on a different server - but that shouldn't matter I'm not getting that far. I am logged into an administrator account on the client box - so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. Also if anyone knows why we always seam to need administrator accounts that would be a great piece of info too.

It should work if you follow the instructions on the instant client page on OTN:

  • Instant client and SQL Developer

    Hello,
I would like to know if I can use the Instant Client along with Ora SQL Developer or TOAD?
    Thank you.

[url http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/sql-developer/overview/index.html]Oracle SQL Developer comes with client stuff built-in (java based), don't need Instant Client.
About Toad, see toadworld.com. But, yes, Instant Client should do fine.

  • How to access .dmp data with the Instant Client?

I'm a total beginner, and am trying to access a .Dmp database. I have installed (on Linux i386):
Instant Client Basic 11.2 + SDK + SQLPlus
I'm aware that I have to further set the environment variables ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and think I know how it should be done.
The files installed in the oracle directory are as follows:
    $ ls /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/lib
    glogin.sql libocci.so libsqlplusic.so ottclasses.zip
    libclntsh.so libocci.so.11.1 libsqlplus.so xstreams.jar
    libclntsh.so.11.1 libociei.so ojdbc5.jar
    libnnz11.so libocijdbc11.so ojdbc6.jar
    $ ls /usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/bin
    adrci genezi sqlplus
But this is where I hit the wall. Just a couple of questions:
How do I make the Client to access the data? I've read a bit about name resolution such as tnsnames.ora and EZConnect, but have no idea what these are, even conceptually.
How do I actually start/configure the Oracle client? Is there an executable somewhere?
Can the .dmp file be even read by the client or do I have to use the SQLPlus to make queries (as I've read somewhere)?
As you see I'm clueless. What are the next steps, or could you point me to a practical tutorial that would show what I need to do.
Thanks a lot for any help..

I browsed the manual, but I didn't understand whether the import utility part of the oracle database software?
Are there any freely downloadable tools by which I can import the data (and then read with a client?).Everything in the Utilities manual is part of the database software set. If you have a database, you have all of those utilities. If you don't have a database, no third party equivalent to those utilities (if such existed) would be of any value.
Depending on your database version, the .dmp file could have been created with either 'exp' (export) or 'expdp' (datapump). Unfortunately, by default both utilities produce a file with the .dmp extension, but they are different formats and not interchangeable. You will need to find out exactly how the .dmp file was created. Actually, you need to find out the entire command used to create it, not just which utility, because the options used at export time will affect what options are available and desirable at import time.

  • Win7 x64 - how to configure 32-bit Instant Client

I am having difficulty getting Instant Client to establish an ODBC link to Excel 2007, a 32-bit app.  My OS is Windows 7 Professional x64 on a Windows 2008 domain.
I installed Oracle 11g Client 64-bit (11.2.0.3.0), Instant Client Basic 64bit, and Instant Client ODBC 64bit.  Path and TNSNAMES parameters were set correctly, and I was able to use Windows Admin Tools to successfully establish a connection to PowerSchool's Oracle database.  So far, so good.
When I tried to use this connection in Excel 2007, I got an error message stating that "the specified DSN contains an architecture mismatch between the Driver and Application."  More research led me to conclude that I need to install 32-bit Instant Client Basic and ODBC.
So I downloaded the appropriate versions of both of these, installed it into c:\ora\<username>\product\11.2.0\client32 (a sibling to the 64-bit client_2 folder), and now I'm stumped.  Running windows\sysWOW64\odbcad2.exe, I see what I think is the 64-bit client, which gives an error message about incompatible architecture (again, 64 vs 32 bit).
What parameters need to be set with odbcad2.exe, and how?  Do I need to run the odbcconf.exe program in sysWOW64?  I tried adding the ...\client32 folder to PATH; no effect.  Is this described in excruciating detail anywhere?

    Ferdimar,
This problem sounds like the server is incorrectly configured. You can try verifying that it is setup correctly for the TNS listener.

    Hi Rod,
different sources (i.e. different branches) are mapped to different local folders in your workspace - in fact you cant map two different server folder to the same local folder.
In you example the mapping would be (for example) like this:
    Server path
    local path
    $/../WpfHelloWorld
    C:\Src\WpfHelloWorld
    $/../WpfHelloWorldDev
    C:\Src\WpfHelloWorldDev
You can see your Workspace mappings when you select "Workspaces..." in the Workspace selection drop down:
Within the "Manage Workspaces" dialog select your workspace and klick "Edit" to see and edit all you mappings.

  • Unix/Linux: How can other OS-users use the Instant Client?

    Hello,
I have a question concerning the practical use of Instant Client. I'm new to this topic and followed the installation guide for Instant Client and installed the software from CD as "oracle"-user belonging to "oinstall"-group.
    My question:
How can I now grant access to the installed libraries which belong "oracle:oinstall" with a completely different user, lets say "tsmith" who belongs only to OS-group "users" ?
What is the most recommended way to grant access to other users?
(in the documentation I found the following statement "the only user accounts that should belong to the oinstall group are the Oracle software owner accounts. For example, the oracle user"....that would mean, it is not recommended to put the user "tsmith" into the "oinstall" group, isn't it?)
Please tell me, how do you grant the access to Instant Client from other user accounts in daily life?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
    Regards
    FireFighter

Oracle tends to be as restrictive with access permissions to the installed software, which is good in principle, but often leads to problems and bugs.
I'd say that if Instant Client is the only Oracle software you have installed in this Oracle Home, you can safely loosen the permissions on this Oracle Home.
I'd change directories to 0755, normal files to 0644 and executable files (files that have executable permission for the owner) to 0755.
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe

These are the steps I followed.
<snipped>I do not see a problem with these steps at all. It is correct. Step 7 is redundant (due to where you placed the tnsnames.ora file) - it's only really needed when you place the file in some other directory where +%ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin+ no longer applies.
Note that the client itself, needs to load the InstantClient OCI DLL - and this DLL uses the environment settings and the rest to "do its thing".
If the client loads some other Oracle client DLL, then the bets are off that InstantClient will be used, never mind will work.
Only a single copy of a DLL can exist in memory. Thus if some other s/w is using some other OCI DLL, then that DLL is already loaded and will be re-used by all other client s/w. None will be able to use the InstantClient DLL itself.
So make sure that no Oracle client driver is loaded at all. Then ensure that when client s/w requests to load the OCI DLL, it is loaded from the InstantClient directory.
As far as I recall, the Win32 LoadLibrary() kernel call is made by the application - if the DLL is not yet in memory, the current directory (in the virtual machine for that Windows process) is used. If the DLL does not exist there, the %PATH% variable is used to find and load the DLL. The DLL usage counter is then set to 1. As more processes request the DLL, it is incremented. When a process terminates, the usage count is decremented. When it reaches 0, its unloaded from memory.
Bottom line to all this is that only a single DLL module (irrespective of the number and versions of physical DLL files on disk) can reside in kernel space, and you need to make sure that the correct physical DLL file is loaded by the kernel.

  • How to use Instant Client  10G DSN-less feature  with SQLDriverConnect?

We have been trying to use the DSN-less feature of the latest Instant Client, instantclient10_2, with the ODBC programming interface using SQLDriverConnect.
We are getting ORA-12560 errors and believe that our connect string isn't correct. The docs don't provide an example or indicate the correct keyword(s) to use.
The help file's "Format of the Connection String" page doesn't provide any clues and DBQ is definitely not working.
    What format should be used?
    Thanks

...So I take it that I'll have to have the server
export to csv or a db format that will provide a
connection on a stock xp or vista box.I'm not sure exactly what you're saying here. Are you suggesting that you'd export the data on the server to a CSV file, copy that to a network share, and have your application create an ODBC connection to the CSV file?
Are you wedded to installing absolutely nothing else? The Oracle Instant Client, for example, just requires copying 3 or 4 DLLs to a directory & setting some environment variables in order to install a minimal Oracle client and ODBC driver (though it won't work with the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle). That's normally a pretty minimal burden for an application to include in its installation scripts.

  • How to make the Data Source Administrator see the 9208 ODBC instant CLient.

I have installed the 9208 Oracle ODBC instant CLient as per the instructions in the accompanying README.txt.
Part III: Exploding the Kit onto your system
Expand the self-extracting archive file onto your hard drive.

    Part IV: Installation Instructions
    This section assumes the following:
    1. Oracle 9.2.0.0.0 client has already been installed on your system,
and necessary 9.2.0.8.0 patch has been applied.
    2. Part III has been completed.

    Installation Instructions
Once the self-extracting archive file ORA9208.EXE has been

    3. ORA9208\ODBC\mesg\oraodbus.msb ---> <ORACLE_HOME>\ODBC\mesg\
All of the above has succeeded ok; however whilst trying to create new DSN the intsant client is not listing as an available driver. What's missing please?

The package you downloade is not ODBC Instant Client package
Instant Client Concept came into existence from 10.1 onwards only
What you downloaded are the patched 9208 ODBC Drivers

  • Instant client 64 bit

    HI,
I have a new compiuter that I am setting up. It was origionally installed as a 32 bit. However, a problem resulted in a re-build and OS 64 bit was installed. Now I am trying to install the ODBC 64 bit version and connect to Visual Studio. I have tried several times and I can create the ODBC connection fine, but when I try to use it from Visual Studio it gives me an error stating:
Attempt to load Oracle Client libraries threw BadImageFormatException. This problem will occur when running 64 bit mode with the 32 bit Oracle client components installed.
    I have tried the Instant client x 64 11.2.2
and several lower versions, but with the same results.
When I create the ODBC connection I do see that the driver is SQOAR32.dll
    I am on a Windows 7 Machine.
How do I get the 64 bit version installed?
    Thanks,
    Trish

64 bit clients can be downloaded from here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/dotnet/downloads/index.html
That said, Visual Studio itself is 32 bit, so if you want the developer tools to work, you'll need a 32 bit client. If you're not using the developer tools in your project and you're compiling your project for AnyCPU or x64, the 64 bit client will work. If you're compiling for x86, you need the 32 bit client. (If you want to do both, you'll need two clients installed.)
edit - Actually, it looks like in this case you might be running into a problem of needing a 32 bit client & ODBC connection. The error mesage could be misleading here as Visual Studio itself is 32 bit. Did you create the ODBC connection using control panel? If so, that's a 64 bit connection.
32 bit ones are created using c:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe
