Compress files to .zip in apple menu bug?

In Tiger it was called "create archive" and in Leopard its called "Compress" (ie: zip the items, but my client who is on a PC only sees 1 PDF file in the .zip folder - when there are 4?
This only happened since i installed leopard, what gives - a bug?

How do you gather the files? Do you place them all in a folder and them "Compress" that folder, or do you individually select the files and then "Compress 4 items"?

  • Windows 7 Compressed File Option Missing From Send Menu

I am looking for  the GPO setting to restore missing Send To Compressed Zipped Folder in Send To Menu.

I recently had to install winzip to open an encrypted file.  I noticed afterwards that the sendto compressed file was missing I use this feature a LOT in my work so assumed it must be a winzip thing.   Even beyond that I dislike the complexity
of winzip so uninstalled it afterwords.  Ever since then the "send to compressed file" option remains missing.   I followed the instructions to restore the file "Compressed (zipped) folder.ZFSendToTarget" to it's proper location
and to my surprise it was already there with original time/date stamp.   I replaced it anyway but no joy.  There are several webpages with this same instruction and it seems to work for everyone - by my case is obviously different.   Any
    ideas?   Win7 sp1 professional 32 bit.

  • Can B2B accpt a compressed file [ tar,zip]  over  AS2

we have a situation where one of our Partner would like to send us a tar file with xml files in it.,
usually the b2b server will accept xml file based on the matching function we configure with.
can some body chime in of b2b is capable of accepting the tar [compressed] paylods.

    Nitesh,
thank you for providing the docs.
so far we were accepting the incoming payloads by searching a pattern in the xml file [ so far all our integrations with TP are via XML file]
but with this compressed file, how will be able to identify the TP, is there an option while configuring the BA for incoming traffic to identify the TP with file name ?
and also to my understanding if i use callout the flow will be as follows:
Incomming tar file form TP-->B2B Identify the File-->CALL OUT to uncompress the file --> put the resulting files in AQ
    here is my usecase:
we will recieve tar file[ this will have multiple xml files] from TP, we have to uncompress the file from that TP and pass it on to built in AQ to BPEL to pick them up.
can you please suggest how shld i identify the TP.,

  • I have a 2007 iMac with version 10.6.8.  When downloading "some" files to my computer, these files become "zip files."  When I open the zip file, it produces a document in some coding language. How can I open the file to produce a legible document?

I have a 2007 iMac with version 10.6.8 and 4GB of expanded memory.  When downloading "some" emailed documents, the downloaded file becomes a "zip file," which when opened looks like a coded message.  How can I open the "zip file" so that it produces a legible document?  Please, help!!  thank you!!!

A "zip file" is a compressed file. "Zipping" in principle does not and cannot change the contents. So that if the contents before zipping are garbage, or unreadable on a Mac, when you expand the file you will get garbage or an unreadable file.
The first thing to verify therefore is whether the file, before it was zipped, was in a "Mac friendly" format. Can you do that?
You do not need an App to zip or unzip. These functions are built in on our Macs.
And yes, zipping and unzipping using the built in functionality, work fine in OS 10.6.8. And 10.7 and 10.8 and 10.9.

  • Reading a Compressed File from a ZIP File, which is an entry of ZIP File

    Hello, Experts,
Would it be possible somebody to help me with code example for the following problem?
I want to read a compressed file from a ZIP file, which is an entry of ZIP File, without extacting/writing files on file system. Is this possible?
Lets say we have a ZipFile1. There is ZipFile2 inside ZipFile1. And inside ZipFile2 is FileA. The scenario is reading FileA without extracting on file system.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Cheers
    RADY

The classes you want to be using are java.util.zip.ZipInputStream and and ZipEntry from the same package. Construct the ZipInputStream with the input you have for the outer zip. Loop with ZipInputStream.getNextEntry until you find the inner zip you're looking for - that method returns a ZipEntry, and you get the name of the zip entry with ZipEntry.getName. Read the ZipInputStream from that point into some buffer, and read that buffer into a new ZipInputStream - rinse and repeat until you have the contents of the file in the zip in the zip...

  • Boxes around icons, duplicates in Apple menu and File menu

When I select something on the desktop, such as an icon, a box with a black outline appears around the icon. Same thing happens when I open a folder. The highlighted name will show a box with outline around it.
Also, if I go under the Apple, I can see 2 restarts, 2 shut downs, 2 logouts, and a force quit finder under the force quit.
If I go under File in the finder, there are 2 move to trash.
How do I get rid of this?

Look at this KB article: Mac OS X 10.4: Some Apple menu items appear twice, which should help you.
To turn off "VoiceOver", read this KB article: Mac OS X 10.4: Computer speaks unexpectedly, or a black box unexpectedly appears around a file, folder, or other item.

  • Extracting compressed file (zip) using PL/SQL

So, if you already have software written to zip/unzip files you should use that as it should be licenced already. If you write your own LZW compression/decompression routine for use in any commercial software you may be required to register and submit royalties to Unisys for the privilege. As I say, I don't know the latest, so you may be ok, but it's something to be aware of and check out if you intend to write your own and it's for commercial reasons.

  • Export to disk compressed files only? bad bad bad

When I select the export to disk under the share menu, it will only export compressed files. This is a drag because the only way to export an aiff is if you send it to itunes. Am I wrong about this, is there something that I am missing?
Exporting to disk allows you to select a destination for the export and this is highly desirable because I don't like cluttering up my itunes library with snippets of songs or individual tracks.
If this is the case than GB 3 has a serious design flaw. Export to disk is a basic function of all music software. To hobble this on purpose is beyond my understanding.
Anyone out there know the answer?

Garageband 1 and 2 have the same flaw. 8^) Exporting to iTunes is the "official" Apple way. I would create a special playlist for your GB exports so you can keep track of them and delete them as necessary.

  • Automate renaming files within zip archive

I have a large number of files where I need to do the following:
Change the file extension to .zip. (The files are zip archives but with a special extension, and all of the files have their own extension, ie .xx01, .xx02, etc...)
    Extract the zip file.
Rename a file within. (Alternatively, it'd be great to be able to rename the file without extracting the zip file.)
    Recompress the file.
Set the file extension back to what it was.
I've been playing around in Automator to see if I could create a workflow that would do some or all of this. I've figured out changing the file extension, and Automator has an action to compress a zip file, but the other parts are eluding me.
Does anyone know a way to make this process a little less labor intensive? I'd prefer to automate the whole thing, but even just some way to rename a file in a .zip archive without extracting it first would be hugely helpful. (I know this is possible under Windows.)
I'm comfortable with delving into new territory in Automator, AppleScript, or shell scripts to make this easier.
    Thanks!

    We had a similar problem
It turned out to be a feature and not a bug
Actually 'vanilla' XP handles those files and is able to open them and it seems that the problem appears only after updating the XP to fix the vulnerability described in:
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS02-054.asp
What we have determined is that if the zip file contains '/' at the begining of the path - the compressed folder utility will refuse to open it and will show only a blank pane in explorer. Removing the '/' from path in zip file solves the problem on updated Windows XP.

I cannot open pages on my MacBookPro. I get a message to update it. In my software update in the apple menu drop down, it shows no updates at this time. I have iWork '09.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5.1 files can not be opened in Pages 5.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs, including files that refuse rto open:

  • Extracting compressed files of 2byte filename?

Sometimes I get zip files containing files 2byte letter-name archived from windows systems.
Most of the time, Tiger's unzip feature cannot show the extracted file name correctly.
They are shown in numbers like this, "\270\360\300\307\260\355\273\347"
If the files are from Mac, but Tiger handles the files very well and shows the correct extracted file names.
I think it's because the charset of compressed file-names are not unicode...
is there any way to solve this problem?
Oh, I've also used Stuffit, but stuffit shows even more cracked letters.

Do you know what language is involved exactly? The numbers are octal representations of individual bytes and, as you surmise, are probably caused by the file names being in an encoding that OS X cannot read directly. It's a longshot for Windows files, but you might have a look at this utility:
    http://docs.info.apple.com./article.html?artnum=86182
Just ignore any error messages when you try to install it. It will be found in Applications/Utilities and works by drag/drop.

  • Software Update (in Apple Menu) No Longer Works

When I click on the software update under the apple menu (10.3.9), nothing happens. It is not grayed out, I get no messages about trouble connecting, just zip. When I go in through system preferences and use the software update ("Check Now"), it does fine. Can anyone explain the disconnect between the apple menu item and the update ? Can anyone help me get it back to being clickable from the pull-down menu ?
    Thank you.

    Sometimes things do happen.
    Have you tried:
    1. Simply restarting the computer? Once in awhile a restart will cure something strange.
    2. Starting up in Safe Mode? This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
You will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). Repair permissions on it.
If a simple restart doesn't fix the problem, see if a little hard drive maintenance does it for you.
    Good luck.

  • Can't compress files on webdav share using Finder

    Hi to all!
I have webdav share (server is on FreeBSD) connected to my MBP. I can read, write, delete files on this share but when I try to compress file on this share (rightclick on file and select "Compress" in menu) I allways get an error popup: "The operation can't be completed because the disk if full." with "zip" icon on it. I know that disk isn't full.
    How to fix this?

as a workaround I use Automator script "Junecloud Automator Actions" to make clean archive

  • How to compress file to 100MB limit

    Hello,
Please advise how do I compress file from FCP to 100MB .mov file.
At the moment I am using a H.264 codec, under High setting, one pass
By the size exceed the 100MB limit.
Please does anyone come across this before?
    Thank you

You only gave one variables for your video, 100MB limit. One need at least 2 variables (of 3) to know what size a given video will be.
    Duration
    File size
    or
    Data Rate.....
Here download this free program to help you determine how to get your video under the 100 MB limit.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/bitratepro.html
It's free and works great. There is a help section under the help menu to tell you how to use the program.

  • Compressing Files -Stuffit ?

Recently, I had problems with Mail because I was trying to send large files to a number of people - essentially, I must have exceeded my limits, Mail didn't like it and decided to cut me off for 24 hours or so, and anything I tried to send by Mail would just sit in the Outbox. Anyhow, I seem now to have been readmitted to the world of Mail and all is okay !
However, it's set me thinking about the future if I need to send largish files (eg 3 MB). And compressing them.
I'm thinking of getting Stuffit, which most of us know as an expander, but I believe also does compression. So, I've downloaded the trial version and done a few trial runs. But I'm confused.
The file I have trialed with is a 3MB .pdf of a newsletter that I want to send the rounds. If I run it through Stuffic compressor by using DropStuff it produces a compressed file in whatever format I ask it to (.zip or .sitx) But, if I look at information about this newly created compressed file (apple and i) it tells me that it is still 3MB !
So, is it compressed or not ? If it gets sent is it still sent as a 3MB file? If so, what is the point of compressing, when the original file was 3 MB also? Or is it a smaller 3MB than the real 3MB file?
Some info and help would be gratefully accepted !
    Thanks.

    Hello Christopher,
As Barbara pointed out, you can create a standard ZIP file by just right-clicking (or "Control"-Clicking with a single-button mouse) and saying Create Archive.
But, to answer your question about the lack of compression:
Regardless of the compression method used, not all files will benefit from compression.
Compression only works by clearing up wasted space, and often by substituting symbols for frequently repeated words or other items that are large or repeated.
As an example, some compression methods might use some single-character symbol to replace a recurring phrase or word in a document. Likewise, it might do the same thing in a program to abbreviate longer strings of commands or text in the file.
Think of it as creating short-hand like a court stenographer to allow a larger file to occupy less space. Then, when it is decompressed, the short-hand is translated back into it's original form.
Additionally, any wasted space is removed and documented in short-hand.
So, if a particular file has a lot of wasted space in it, or is written using a less compact form (in it's native format), then compression will make a significant difference in file size.
However, if the program stores it's files in a format that is already compact and efficient, then you might only save a couple of character spaces (if that much) when you compress it.
As a simple method of proving this, take a large file that will compress down to a smaller form. Once it is compressed, try to compress it again. The program will do this, but you'll notice that the second compression is either not effective or very minimal.
This is because the wasted space was already removed from the file. So, there was no additional improvement to be made.
Also, as noted, there are different methods of compression. So, the type of compression you choose will affect the end size of some file types.
For example, a ZIP file may differ in size from a TAR file, which may differ in size from a SITX file, etc. This is because every format has it's own method of creating short-hand. So, some methods may compress certain file types more.
    Hope this helps.
