Computer Amnesia?

I recently came back to my mackbook after a weekend away, during which it was turned off. I tried to play a movie I had rented in itunes, and the application said that this computer wasn't recognized. Okay strange, whatever, I authorized it, but the same problem happened again. It was accompanied by a flickering between the loading of the file and the password prompt for authorization. Alright, let's try unrecognizing all my authorized computers because these slots were now full. The problem remained, so at this point I filed a complaint with itunes, thinking the problem was on their end. I also downloaded another movie (which played) hoping to this would jumpstart the recognition of my computer. Sit and wait.
Now today I tried to upload some photos onto aperature, and the program asked me to register thr program and give the serial number. I have no idea where this is anymore because my residence is now another country, and my belongings are split between the two locations. Has anyone else had this problem or been able to solve it? It seems like my computer has amnesia. Here are two major events that have happened in its recent history, and may have been an issue: downloaded adobe master suite collection trial, and used time machine for the first time on the 20th. Please help.
Zach
P.S. My OSX software is up to date.

OK. Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your new account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that list into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.
The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

  • Should I swap computer with my father?

So. My father recently got the mid 2012 13" Macbook Pro (the more powerful model with 2.9ghz http://support.apple.com/kb/SP649). He merely uses it to surf the web, check emails and store photos. He also thinks the display is a tad too small.
I on the other hand have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro (the lesser version with 2ghz i7 - link: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP620).
So, from his point of view swapping would only mean a bigger screen, which he longs for. I would get a smaller computer, which would make commuting to and from school easier (I have a bad back), but I'm wondering if it's worth going down a full 2 inches and losing my external graphic card. I'm not sure as to which is best - 2ghz quad or 2.9ghz dual core. I first bought my 15" because I wanted to play computer from time to time (CS, L4D, Amnesia), but these days I'm mostly using it for surfing, writing and such.
My questions to you guys are:
    - Should I do the swap?
    - What would i lose / gain in terms of how powerful the computers are?
    - How do I reinstate my files on his and vise versa? Can I just backup both OS Xs in Time Machine, clean the slates and transfer the onto the computers?
I hope at least some of you made it through my text and can help me decide.
    Have a nice sunday :-)
    Sebastian

In terms of power, there is really no comparison, yours is the more powerful machine.

  • I updated my computer today to 10.1.1 Yosemite.  In doing so, it said my kapersky's virus scanner is damaged and needs to be deleted.  I did so.  I'm wondering if you can recommend another virus scanner?

I updated my computer today to Yosemite 10.1.  It told me that my Kaspersky virus scanner was damaged and that I should delete it.  I did so.  I'm wondering what virus scanner I should purchase?

First, you should be sure you have fully uninstalled the software. If you have no uninstaller nor directions for uninstalling, then see:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.

    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.

  • Graphics Card - Amnesia: The dark descent

Ok so the deal is, I am planning on buying Amnesia, but I can't if the demo can't even run without a proper graphics card (It shows the title screen and ingame the crosshair but behind it is just plain black and no light whatsoever).
    (Long Story Short on bottom)
There is many videos on youtube about this problem and it can be resolved by updating your Intel(R) HD Graphics Card.  So I tried going to intel to manually download an update. When I was done going through the video and finally getting ready to update it said "Windows could not verify if this update is compatible with your graphics card, updating now could lead to major problems or making your computer not work at all. Are you sure you want to update it?" and I said no to it and I looked on Intel for them to look at my computer's graphics card and find an update and it said this
Product detected: Intel(R) Processor Graphics 3000
    Current Driver installed: 8.15.10.2523
A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.
So I clicked computer manufacturer and I ended up here, could someone tell me how and what i should do?
    Please
    Long Story short:
Please can someone tell me an update for my graphics card so I can run Amnesia: The Dark Descent without it ruining my computer (I want a sure answer where my computer will not break no matter what if you could please)

What's the full model number of your computer? It should be on a label on the bottom.
As an aside, it's a very interesting game. I started playing it recently, and I suspect I'm about half way through.

  • I keep haveing to reinstall the adobe plugin., everytime I turn on my computer I have to do this.

I noticed that youtube videos stopped working for no immediately apparent reason. the rest of the site worked but not videos. It was the same with anything that required flash, which I only realized because of going through the trouble shooting list from pandora.com of things that might be wrong. This would have fixed the problem if it was for the fact that I have to reinstall the same plugin every time I turn on my computer. It's like my firefox has amnesia and can't remember that I installed this already. I'll admit that I don't know if this is a problem with just firefox or something wrong with my computer.

  • Cannot add HP USB printer to 1 user on my computer

I hooked up via USB an HP Photosmart C4480 to my iMac, which has a non-admin account (my daily account) and an admin account. The C4480 worked, but my non-admin account has lost touch w/it after I added a new ink cartridge this weekend. This is what happens:
No apps in the non-admin account see the printer -- not Word, TextEdit, Safari, Mail. When I open Print & Fax in System Preferences, it shows no printer (while the admin account sees the printer and has it set as default). When I click the plus sign, the computer shows the "Photosmart C4400 series" as a USB printer in a new dialog box. I select that description, a box drops down telling me it is seeing whether it is configurable, and then after a few moments it disappears leaving the System Pref pane empty w/out explanation. My non-admin user account's Library folder has a printer queue named "HP Photosmart C4400 series" but when clicked it starts to open, then closes w/out doing anything. In my admin account, I can open this queue app and see that the printer is ready.
When I could not get the non-admin account to work, I opened the admin account and used the HP uninstaller to remove C4400 software that came w/the printer on a CD. I then attached the printer and my iMac, running Snow Leopard, downloaded the HP drivers from Apple automatically -- all while signed in to the admin account. The admin account continues to function just fine and is even sharing the printer over WiFi w/my wife's Macbook.
This has happened before w/this printer, and I reset the printing system. I figure I should reset again, but wanted to know whether I can do something to prevent my non-admin account from getting amnesia the next time.

Try repairing permissions and then restart your computer.

  • FontExplorer + Network Home Directories = font amnesia

I'm a humble (tho ambitious) graphic design instructor trying to get network home directories working in my 30-seat design lab. At the beginning of January I migrated all workstations to a freshly built 10.4.4 universal image and updated (actually re-installed) my server and took it to 10.4.4.
In my testing of network home directories everything is working perfectly accept our font manager. (Even Word is playing nice thanks to a tip I found here!)
We started with FontAgent (cause we own 30 licenses), but quickly found that to be not very well adapted to a network home environment. (I did get the official work-around shell scripts from Insider Software, and those looked to be an easily broken kluge that only solve half the problem.)
So again following Gerrit's tips from here, I tried the latest version of FontExplorer which is supposed to support network home directories-- and it runs! (Unlike FontAgent.)
...but it has an incurable case of amnesia. In other words, as users move around from machine to machine, session to session, and day to day it always forgets all their fonts-- even though the actual font files always remain accessible in the same place.
Upon investigation, I can see that FontExplorer is actually doing something very similar to the FontAgent shell scripts. That is, whenever FontExplorer is launched in a NHD environment it creates a new "FontDatabase.db" file in a directory on the local drive:
    Users/Shared/Linotype/FontExplorer X/{UserShortName}_{UserNumericID}/
and creates a symbolic back to the file's customary location in the user's networked Library:
    /Application Support/Linotype/FontExplorer X/
The amnesia part comes in because I haven't found a way to get FontExplorer to start with-- or keep-- an already configured "FontDatabase.db" file. It constantly seems to be resetting itself with each login.
Does anyone have wisodm or suggestions on how to make FontExplorer remember its fonts?
Does anyone have any tips for getting any font manger to be totally functional in a network home environment?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Excellent tips, and thank you - they're very helpful for all involved!
I see that you're using NFS (and its behavior makes sense), but this might make your life a little easier if you were to use AFP for home directories again:
    1. If you have an automounted network Library (/Network/Library), that would be perfect for housing a "starter set" of Font Explorer preferences and your initial, preconfigured database file, in this way.
Create a folder in your automounted network Library and name it something like FEInitialData. Set the permissions such that your users can only read (root:admin 775 would be good). Now your clients all see the FEInitialData folder in /Network/Library/FEInitialData.
Locate these files from an appropriately configured local user account: com.linotype.FontExplorer.plist and the ~/Library/Application Support/Linotype/FontExplorer X folder (that contains the FontDatabase.db file).
Place a copy of the com.linotype.FontExplorer.plist file in the FEInitialData folder in your network Library. (To clients, this appears as /Network/Library/FEInitialData/com.linotype.FontExplorer.plist.)
Use Disk Utility to create a new disk image from the local ~/Library/Application Support/Linotype folder. Make sure that the image is a read/write image, and name it something like FESupport.dmg. Then place that resulting disk image in the network Library, so that to clients, this appears as /Network/Library/FEInitialData/FESupport.dmg.
    2. Utilize an AppleScript app as a login item to perform the following listed actions at login time. You'll have to either distribute the login app to each computer (e.g. in their respective Applications folders), or place it in the automounted Library (or automounted Applications, etc.) like /Network/Library/LoginScript.app. You'll also have to define the script as a login item for your users. You can do that at the group level in Workgroup Manager once you have the LoginScript.app in the same relative place on each client.
Be sure also to remove FontExplorer X itself as a login item, since it needs to be quit while we're preparing files for it!
Listed Actions to be done by LoginScript.app:
    1. If no ~/Library/Preferences/com.linotype.FontExplorer.plist file exists, copy it from /Network/Library/FEInitialData.
    2. If no ~/FESupport.dmg file exists, copy it from /Network/Library/FEInitialData.
    3. Mount the FESupport.dmg file to a local filesystem path, so that its contents appear to reside in a local folder. (For this script, I'll use /tmp.)
    4. Ensure that a ~/Library/Application Support/Linotype folder exists and contains a symbolic link named "Font Explorer X" which points to the mounted disk image's contents.
    5. Launch Font Explorer. (Upon initial launch, the metadata caches should be recreated.)
    -----LoginScript.app---
(*See if the preference file and FESupport disk image are in the right places. If not, copy them there.*)

    end try
(*Create the mount point for the FESupport.dmg file*)
    try
--Delete the mount point in case we're not the first login and to ensure that we have an empty folder owned by this user.
do shell script "rm -rf /tmp/FEMountPoint"
    end try
    try
    --Create the mount point
    try
    do shell script "mkdir /tmp/FEMountPoint"
    end try
(*Ensure that we have a symbolic link to the mount point*)
    try
--Remove any existing links just to be safe.
do shell script "rm -rf \"~/Library/Application Support/Linotype\""

    --Create new symbolic links.
do shell script "mkdir \"~/Library/Application Support/Linotype\""

do shell script "hdiutil attach ~/FESupport.dmg -mountpoint /tmp/FEMountPoint"
    (*Open FontExplorer*)
do shell script "open \"/Applications/Linotype FontExplorer X.app\""
    ---End Script---
I might have messed up some of the syntax, so consider this a working example. Hope it helps!

  • Multiple ipods belonging to multiple family members on one computer

How do I keep my family's libraries separate on one computer. I have been checking and unchecking songs each time I sync one of my children's ipods. It is driving me nuts. There has got to be a better way. My husbands library alone so far is 1300 songs. HELP!

When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
    a) Sharing a single iTunes library
    b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
    c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): iPod - Syncing Music
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. You can read more about playlists at these links:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Loading the iPod shuffle differs slightly but it can still be used with the others, for details have a look at this page: Adding songs to iPod shuffle - Windows
    Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
    Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists
I don't use Windows so I can't give you a step by step on that one, however I can point you to another web page which should help you out. You can read about Windows user accounts here:

  • IPod Touch/Phone 4gens No Longer Detected in WINDOWS MY COMPUTER but OK in iTunes

Since I have not found help online regarding the above situation I'm looking for help accordingly.   For most folks it's iTunes not detecting i-Devices, but my situation is unique.
It started last night after I was on the phone for hours with Norton regarding error messages I was getting with Internet Security.  Those issues have been resolved.
Again: iTunes detects and interacts successfully with ALL my iDevices.  Windows Vista > My Computer no longer does.
    Please help.

Just now I performed the following:
Turned off and turned back on AMDS(Apple Mobile Device) Service.
Disabled Norton Internet Security, and tried checking if Windows would see my devices.
For anyone who has Windows Vista you are familiar with the notes that play when you plug in a USB device: "da-dunk!"  Low-High note dadunk indicates connected.   High-low indicates it was disconnected.
I can tell there is a problem because right after the Low-High dadunk in Vista I get a triple Low-note Du-du-dunk.
    Please help!

  • ITunes + Vista = my computer can no longer see my DVDrw drive...

I just downloaded iTunes 7.6.2.9 onto my Dell Inspiron E1705 - and when I restart my computer, the computer can no longer see my Optical drive (DVDrw). I contacted Dell support, and they changed something in the regedit limits or something(I'm not a techy lol), and my optical drive was back.
But the next day when I opened iTunes I got a message that says:
"Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
    So I reinstalled iTunes.
I restarted my computer, and it could no longer see my optical drive AGAIN. My DVDrw drive gets an error that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." When I check for solutions it says "Could not load driver software."
I go back to Dell support and tell them my optical drive isn't working. They do the exact same thing to fix it (deleting some limit with regedit) and it works. I open iTunes, and I get the iTunes Warning (Setup Assistant Error).
I asked the Dell tech what the deal was, and he said iTunes isn't compatible at all with Vista.
But according to Mac's website it is...
    Anyone know what's going on?!?!

I am having the exact same behavior as xhollysue!
    It goes like this:
    1. Install ITunes, lose optical disk drives hardware (they don't even show up in Windows Explorer).
    2. Use RegEdit to disable Upper Filters at HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}, optical drive hardware re-appears.
    3. iTunes requires a re-install to permit CD burning, and your back to square one.
I got the above fix NOT from a Dell technician, but, instead, from a Microsoft technician, which cost me $70.
I would strongly urge Apple to research this issue and come up with a more reasonable workaround since (1) the iPhone is being adopted by many traditional MS users and the use of iTunes is an integral part of the iPhone technology architecture; (2) iPhone 3G is just now shipping and will bring even more into the Apple camp; and (3) iTunes is clearly a better media player.
Come on Apple. Let's get some enthusiam and take advantage of this opportunity!

  • I cant figure out why my HTC Droid DNA is no longer recognized by my computer when i hook it up with the USB cable that came with the phone.

I used to be able to just plug in my phone with the USB cable to my Windows 7 computer and browse phone storage with no issues. Now my computer sees it as an android phone but when it tries to automatically install the drivers for my phone on the computer, i get an access denied error message. No option on the phone that i can see that allows me to mount phone as a usb drive. This used to work just fine with nothing more than just hooking up the cable. What gives??

Let's get that access granted again, e_rock_b. The HTC DNA doesn't have a special USB Mass Storage Mode that needs to be turned on. Usually, it's as simple as connecting and browsing http://vz.to/1jktbZD as you mentioned. If your computer is no longer allowing that easy access, try the steps at http://vz.to/1jktvr6.

We don't know what Apple plans on doing to change this (and it may not be just Apple but more likely the publishers, since Apple would, of course, do whatever it could to maximize sales/profits).  Right now you can only read Apple books on mobile devices. Sure, buy them from Amazon if you want to read them on the computer. We don't work for Apple so we're pretty impartial on this kind of advice.
You might also see what your library can offer.  My wife can browse the county library from her iPhone, borrow e-versions, and read books on it too.  Free!
