Computer crushed and backups are gone...  possible to restore?

Hello everyone, I am very frustrated right now... my PC was forced to do a factory restore recently. Meaning my LR backups are all gone!
All I have are the original photos (non-edited) and the edited photos. I have imported those original photos to LR4 already, but is there any method to correspond them with the edited photos? I don't want to edit all of my photos once again... and they won't be the same as my previous edit anyways
(p.s. tried to import edited photos but it doesn't show any "edited information" like clarity / saturation / crops etc.)
big help needed, thanks a million in advance!

(and I guess my facebook photos wouldn't be able to do the same thing right? as they weren't uploaded as HQ...)
The resolution of the exported image does not matter, as the technique only takes the develop info out of the exported image and embeds it into the original. So as long as you have the originals of your facebook photos, and facebook did not strip the XMP data from your uploads, they'll be fine.
may I know how exactly you did this through Exif tools ?
This is the technique that can be used:
(I'm assuming that you have a file "xxxx - LR.jpg" as export, along with a file xxxx.jpg as original for all images you want to recover)
1) Download and install ExifTool
Download the "Windows Executable" ZIP file from this page:http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/
Open the ZIP file and extract the file exiftool(-k).exe to some folder on your harddisk, then rename the file to exiftool.exe
(let's assume you extract the file to folder C:\ExifTool, and I'll use this directory in future references)
2) Create some folders
Create a folder to contain the images to be worked on, i.e. C:\Temp, with subfolders "Originals" and "Exports"
3) Open Command Windows for Originals / Exports
In Windows Explorer, Shift+RightClick on folder C:\Temp\Originals and choose "Open Command Window Here"
The resulting command window will look like this:
In Windows Explorer, Shift+RightClick on folder C:\Temp\Exports and choose "Open Command Window Here"
The resulting command window will look like this:
These two command windows will be called "cmd-Originals" and "cmd-Exports" in furhter references
Perform this procedure for each folder of Originals/Exported images:
Please make sure you enter the command exactly as written here. You can copy them from here using Ctrl-C and insert them into a command window using Right-Click+Insert (Ctrl-V will not work in a command window).
4) Copy Originals to folder Originals
Using Windows Explorer, copy all originals of one specific folder into C:\Temp\Originals
5) Copy Exported JPEGs to folder Exports
Using Windows Explorer, copy all exported derivates of these originals into C:\Temp\Exports
6) Extract XMP Files from Exported JPEGs
In command window cmd-Exports, enter the following command to extract XMP files from your exported JPEGs, whereby cutting the last 5 characters from the filename, hence making "xxxx.xmp" out of "xxxx - LR.jpg":
C:\ExifTool\exiftool -o %d%-.5f.xmp "* - LR.jpg"
This will result in as many *.xmp files as there were "xxxx - LR.jpg" files in the directory (the confirmation will say "nn image files created").
7) Modify XMP files to AlreadyApplied=False
In command window cmd-Exports, enter the following command to change the value of the tag "AlreadApplied" in all XMP files to "False":
C:\ExifTool\exiftool -xmp:AlreadyApplied="False" -overwrite_original *.xmp
(the confirmation will say "nn image files updated")
8) Move XMP files to folder Originals
Using Windows Explorer, move all the files with extension *.xmp from folder C:\Temp\Exports to C:\Temp\Originals
The XMP files should now carry the same base name as your originals in the folder C:\Temp\Originals
9) Embed the XMP files into the Originals
In command window cmd-Originals, enter the following command to embed the content of all *.xmp files into the existing JPEG originals with the same base name:
C:\ExifTool\exiftool -ext jpg -tagsfromfile %d%f.xmp -overwrite_original *
(the confirmation will say "nn image files updated")
10) Move Originals back to where they came from
Using Windows Explorer, move all the files (*.jpg+*.xmp) from folder C:\Temp\Originals into a subfolder of the folder you originally copied your originals from in step 4). (i.e. "Recovered_Originals")
11) Delete content of folder Exports
Using Windows Explorer, delete all files from folder C:\Temp\Exports
(both Exports and Originals should be empty by now)
12) Import Originals into LR
Import the files from "Recovered_Originals" into LR and see if the result is what you were looking for.
13) Back to Step 4 with the next set of Originals/Exports
I would recommend to practice this procedure with a few images to start with, and check if everything runs to your satisfaction. Then go ahead and do the bulk part.
Beat
P.S: Come back here if you get stuck or anything does not behave as described. I'll be out of town for a few days though, so a possible answer will have to wait till the end of the week.

i had problems with my computer so had to do a factory reset downloaded firefox and all emails and passwords are gone i am new to this and didnt know how to back them up i need these emails and passwords back

If you've reset your Windows setup by doing a factory reset and you didn't make a backup of the personal data in the Firefox Profile Folder before doing this then I'm afraid that all data that Firefox stores in the Firefox Profile Folder is lost.

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

hi guys, i just re-formatted my computer and once i rebooted my iMac my lightroom, inddesign, and PS are gone. I am currently a Creative Cloud member... how do i re-download my needed software ?

    Hi Josh,
If you have your Adobe ID and password ready for your Creative Cloud membership, visit the following page.
Creative Cloud Help | Install, update, or uninstall apps
I generally suggest people FIRST install the Creative Cloud Desktop Application. This is mainly because you then have the option to check and set the installer language prior to installing the applications you want to use again on your system.
Once you have installed the Creative Cloud Desktop app:
Click on the gear icon in the top right.
    Choose preferences.
Click Apps, and set the Installer language. If you happen to live in Australia, you might find that the default installer language is set to English (North American), to English (International English) this would ensure that an application such as InDesign installs with default metric-units of measurements, UK dictionary etc. (instead of inches, US english).
Once that is set, you can click 'Install' next to any applications you'd like to install.
    Good luck.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.

I updated my iphone all my contacts and photos are gone. How can I retrieve them?

Have you failed to use the device as designed?
If using the iPhone as designed, contacts are synced with a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.  Pictures taken with the device would be copied off to the computer on a regular basis.
If you have been using the device as designed, simply sync the content back.
If you have not been using the device as designed, you can try restoring from the most recent backup.  However, if that does not restore them, they are gone.

*Your Own Backups<br>You could have a backup system in place that backs up such files or the firefox profile, and you may be able to use that.
    * Synced to another machine<br> you may have the bookmarks synced on another machine, or even on an external server

  • When I upgraded iphone to ios 5 and all of my pics and videos are gone. I remember doing this through iTunes. Can anyone help me please?

When I upgraded iphone to ios 5 and all of my pics and videos are gone. I remember doing the upgrade through iTunes. I've looked in iPhoto and iTunes. Does anyone have any sugesstions of how I can get my pictures back?

For some reason, did you fail to use the iPhone as intended?  Meaning copying the pictures and videos off the device regularly so that in the event the device is lost/stolen or simply fails, copies would exist on your computer?
You can try restoring from the backup created prior to the update, but it is strongly recommended that pictures/videos be copied off the device on a regular basis.  Then any pics/vids that the user desires to keep on the device can be synced back via iTunes.

  • ALL pictures in iPhoto *and* PhotoBooth are gone :(  please help

    Hello,
I have a bit of a dilema here. On 6-27-07 (actually 6-28 cause it was after midnight), my daughter and I were taking pictures in photobooth. I selected the iPhoto icon from the PhotoBooth picture to send a copy of those pictures to iPhoto.
PhotoBooth froze up after doing several of them and wouldn't work. I am trying to remember from memory (which is swiss cheese from the MS), but I think I had to do a hard shut down. When I tried to go to iPhoto, it acted like it was my 1st time using it and it began asking me questions as if I was setting it up for the 1st time. ALL pictures are GONE. Everything in iPhoto and PhotoBooth are GONE I don't know what I did or how (if I can) to fix it.
Can anyone possibly help me? Lots of precious memories gone. I was recently going to read how to do a back-up right before this happened. Now I wish I hadn't gone to sleep that night until I learned how to do it and actually did make a back-up
My husband called Apple and they told him to do something and now that has created approximately 3 copies of random pics and not all of them, or I would just delete the extras. My husband may have done something wrong to have it make extra copies of the pictures it has now, I don't know.
My husband didn't seem like he was happy with the help that he was getting at the time. So, I found my way here again!!! I have been to the discussions boards once before, but I forgot how to get here (serious swiss cheese memory from MS). I have to save ALL websites that I like to my favorites or I should say 'Bookmarks' or I will probably never find it again. <embarassed>
**I will tell you a little about me and the use of my mac....... I have Multiple Sclerosis so my husband purchased the lap top to make it easier for me to get online and not be stuck to one chair which makes me hurt bad. I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
Anyway, when we purchased it we explained that I would mainly be using it for Internet use and for the pictures that I take (I am disabled, so that is about all I can do but I thoroughly enjoy it), which happens to be more than the average person since I have a new Grandson
Any help that anyone can give me, I would TRULY APPRECIATE!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    New2Him

    Brenda,
    You're quite welcome.
That does sound like your original library. It makes sense to me; your husband was probably told to drag it to the Desktop by the Apple help desk person. Look inside your Pictures folder for the other two iPhoto Library folders. If you don't find them there, do another Finder Search. Click once on a found item in the Search window to see its path at the bottom of that window. That should help you locate those folders.
After you find and rename or delete the other libraries, you will be ready to create a new library. (You might not want to delete those other folders yet - in case some photos are missing from your main library. But if you are sure that nothing in them is original, go ahead and Trash them to free up the space.)
To create a new library, Option-launch iPhoto and click "Create Library." By default it will be located in your Pictures folder and named "iPhoto Library." You can change the name if you want - say, "iPhoto Library New" before you click "Save." A new, empty library will open. Drag the right corner of the window up so that it fills only about half of your screen. Do iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and make sure that there IS a check in the boxes beside "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library" and "Add ColorSync Profile".
On the other half of your screen, open a Finder window. Set it to column view and navigate this path: Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Originals/ 2007/ (Film Roll folders). It is these Film Roll folders that contain your photos. Select all of the Roll folders and drag them as a group over the iPhoto window until the cursor shows you a green plus symbol. Drop them in the main viewing area of the iPhoto window. iPhoto will indicate to you that it is importing. A film roll will be created for each folder that you dragged. [Tip: if you want an Album to represent each film roll, then drag them to the Source Pane (left column) instead of the main viewing window. This will create an Album and a film roll, both with the same name as the imported folder.]
I have read that the film roll date can be wrong after importing, so you may want to check the dates as you go. Open the Info Pane in the lower left corner of the iPhoto window (click the little i). When you select a Roll, its info will display in the Info Pane. You can edit the Roll's title and date, if you wish.
When the 2007 rolls have all been imported, switch to the Originals/ 2006 folder, select the roll folders, and drag to your iPhoto window. Repeat for each year in your Desktop library.
This will recover your Original, unedited photos in the same film rolls as before. What cannot be saved is your Albums, Slideshows, Books, titles, keywords, ratings, and other metadata. These were contained in the database file that was damaged during the iPhoto hang or subsequent hard shut down.
If you had spent significant time editing your photos, then you may want to have a look in Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Modified to see if you wish to save any of the edited versions. There is no way to reconnect the edits with their Originals; that info was also stored in the database file. But if you want to import them to your library you may. Be aware that this will cause the appearance of duplication, much like you had in the library your husband created. If you can part with your edited versions, then it is much easier to discard them. (If not, be selective.)
I'll look forward to hearing your progress. Regards,
    Shelly

I restored my iPad and all my pictures and videos are gone how do I get them back?

Well, when you restore your ipad, there is really no way to get the information back. The reason you restore it i to get all of the information off of it. Why did you restore it if you wanted to keep the info?
Aa far as I know, there is no way to un-restore any device. But, you can put the info back onto the device if it was on your computer, etc.
    Sorry...

    Hi kamcop68,
If you have a recent backup available (even pre-iOS7), you may want to try restoring your data from there. You may find the following article helpful:
