Computer name being show as "localhost" when trying to bind to directory

I am trying to bind my computer (OS 10.4.11) to my server (10.4.11) but each time I go to bind it the computer name is shown as "localhost" rather than the computer's real name. The computer's name is shown as r2.local in the Sharing pane of System Prefs, also confirmed by the output of hostname. I am also getting this in my system log during bootup:

Thoughts?

I think Directory Utility is in 10.5+, it's called Directory Access in previous versions (at least in 10.4). I have an OD running on the Mac server that I am trying to bind to, the AD/windows server is just for the PCs.
I did find this though about the mDNSresponder error I'm getting:
(from http://lists.apple.com/archives/bonjour-dev/2005/Aug/msg00020.html)
-65557 means NAT Traversal error. You need to be using a router that
supports NAT-PMP or UPnP if you want to register your hostname
successfully using DNS Update.
I enabled UPnP on my router/firewall but it did not help.

    When I attached my USB flashdrive to my new Mac Air no icon appears and the same when I attached my new superdrive.  I just finished downloading pictures off of my old Mac and that one worked as expected. The new computer doesn't show anything but when I pull the USB flashdrive out, a message prompts me with an improper eject notice. Any ideas on why no icon (a disc) appears and how can I get it to?

  • Workgroup Computer name will showed as "#Error" - Logical Disk Extension Management Pack By David Allen

    Anyone is applying the Logical Disk Extension Management Pack By David Allen?
    I have the issue whereby the Computer name will showed as "#Error" on the managed computer which is in
    Workgroup environment.
    Refer to this screenshot --> https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=75e44d0edffe5025#cid=75E44D0EDFFE5025&id=75E44D0EDFFE5025%21942.
    Is anyone know the way to fix this?
    Thanks!
    regards, Han Seen.

    The solution I used is to edit the management pack: the report displays the computer name only for computers that contains suffix in its name. if in SCOM the computer name is hostname.domain.net, only hostname will be shown as computer name.
    you can change it by editing the management pack:
    replace line number 2230 instead of
    <Value>=Left(Fields!Computer.Value,(instr(Fields!Computer.Value,".")-1))</Value>
    replace it with
    <Value>=Fields!Computer.Value</Value>
    now it will show you the full computer name under computer name area, and workgroup computer will be shown as well.

  • What are solutions to the "Unexpected error while attempting to bind.  Operation cancelled." message when trying to bind

    What are solutions to the "Unexpected error while attempting to bind.  Operation cancelled." message when trying to bind and i alreeady cheack my DNS settings and everything

    Has this worked before, or is this a new configuration?
    On the server, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and post the output of the following harmless diagnostic command — and you'll need to enter an administrative password when requested:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
    On the OS X (presumably) Mavericks client, please post the IP address(es) of the DNS server(s) you're referencing.  These are available via the System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS settings.
    To check the console logs, launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities on both the client and the server, and then attempt the binding, and then post a (short! no more than ~25 to 50 lines!) of any errors related to the binding error.
    If you're not in a position to post configuration details here — which is perfectly reasonable, and entirely your prerogative — or if I'm getting too confusing or too technical with some of the questions here, which would be my error of course — then (assuming these systems are under warranty) I'd suggest contacting the folks at the local Apple Store and having a chat with the local Geniuses about this, or checking directly with the Apple Support folks via telephone.

  • Terminal-IP address instead of computer name is showing

    Hi, my computer is behaving strangely lately and I noticed that in terminal the host name is displayed like this:
    c-XX-XXX-XX-XX-XXX:~ myusername%
    with XX numbers corresponding to my actual IP address
    When I looked in my 1 month old backup, it is displayed correctly there with an actual drive name.
    In addition, the current shell is tsch, despite the fact that I am running OSX10.4.11 where it is supposed to be bash as far as I understand.
    Is displaying IP address in terminal instead of computer name normal? If not, how to reset this?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    BDAqua,
    My report:
    1. Moved preferences.plist from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist into trash.
    2. rebooted.
    3. Computer now shows [localhost] in terminal as a host name-success. However, now Internet does not work.
    4. Went to System preferences>Network>Built-in-Ethernet. There was a blank page (all settings gone).
    5. No matter. Inputed comcast.net in Search domains field (Comcast is my provider). Clicked on Apply now. All settings came back, internet works.
    6. Now Terminal again shows my IP as a host name, but at least I know that this change came from Comcast.
    Unexpected benefit: Apparently this procedure got rid of annoying "Your settings are being modified by another application" bug-Good to know, thanks.
    Conclusion: For some reason Comcast sees fit to modify Terminal settings.
    Big thanks for making the problem clearer.

  • Old computer name still shows

    I bought a new iMac core duo early this year and migrated all my data from my ibook to it. Not a problem, and i reinstalled Tiger on my ibook for the new owner when i sold it. I've just noticed that my old ibook computer name crops up now again even though my iMac now has a different name. How is this possible?
    I'm sharing my files with a Sony Vaio (forgive me i own a laptop too), and when i connect to me network, it shows my path as ''my old ibook computername'(my ip address)'(my name:). Why does it not show my current computer name?
    If anyone has any ideas and a solution i would be greatly appreciated.

    Is this a plugin you are developing or one you have purchased?
    If purchased, I would try to contact the company that made it.
    If you are developing, then I would get the original Dissolve (or other) example and make sure it is working correctly with the OK and in the Cancel scenario. If so, then copy that example and start modifying and working your way towards what you now have. You should be able to tell when things go wrong and that would help me figure out your crasher.

  • Fold down window just disappears when trying to bind to AD

    We're switching back to Macs!!
    In preparation I'm trying to bind my MacBook (10.5.6) to the Windows server (I've done this successfully at another school).
    When I go to Directory Access, click the + , put in the info, the fold down window goes away and nothing happens, I'm pretty ignorant so be gentle.

    AD is already enabled, I'm bound at another location. Just when when I click the + to add this one, fill it out and click OK,it folds away and nothing happens, I tried putting in rubbish and I get the same, no error messages, it just folds up and ignores me. I did create a computer for this Macbook on the AD server.

  • Error when trying to bind without "cn=" prefix

    I am trying to bind a java object, via jndi, into an LDAP server and
    am getting an error.
    We have already bound jms.topics using IBM's JMSAdmin tool (a java
    tool), and they are in with names like "bucks" and "dela". Now, we
    want to put objects in from another tool instead of using the IBM
    tool.
    I am able to get the objects in, but I am forced to use "cn=myObject"
    instead of "myObject". For programic reasons, the later is what I
    need to do.
    Here is the code:
    // create the ctx
    InitialDirContext ctx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    // create the topic object with topic name of myTopic
    Topic q = new com.ibm.mq.jms.MQTopic("myTopic");
    // bind the object to the LDAP with the name == the topic name
    ctx.bind(new CompositeName("myTopic"),q);
    This results in
    javax.naming.directory.SchemaViolationException: [LDAP: error code 65
    - Object Class Violation]; remaining name 'myTopic'

    at JNDITool.main(JNDITool.java:74)
    But, if I use
    ctx.bind(new CompositeName("cn=myTopic"),q);
    it works fine, but appears as "cn=myTopic" in the naming directory.
    In order to be backward compatible with another application, I need to
    have the name be merely "myTopic".
    Anybody know what IBM's JMSAdmin tool is doing differenctly to achieve
    this?
    TIA,
    Gonzo

    So the answer is you need to create some attributes to use when binding:
    // create the attributes for the binding.
    BasicAttributes basicattributes = new BasicAttributes();
    basicattributes.put("objectclass", "javaContainer");
    basicattributes.put("cn", topicName);
    // do the binding
    ((DirContext)ctx).bind(topicName, newTopic, basicattributes);

  • Underflow Exception when trying to bind small double to BINARY_DOUBLE

    I get exception when trying to insert small double value (1.0E-131) into BINARY_DOUBLE column via jdbc.
    The exception I get:
    Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: Underflow Exception trying to bind 1.0000000000000001E-131

    According to oracle documentation the smallest positive number the BINARY_DOUBLE column can store is 2.22507485850720E-308.
    I'm using oracle 10g r2 and thin jdbc driver.
    Any ideas?

    That is expected since a double is converted to a Oracle NUMBER before passing it to the database and Oracle NUMBER does not support 1.0e-131, the range is 1E-130 .. 10E125.
    Look at the SQL output below,
    SQL> select to_char(to_number(1.0e-131)) from dual;
    T
    0
    SQL> select to_char(to_number(1.0e-130)) from dual;
    TO_CHAR(TO_NUMBER(1.0E-130))
    1.000000000000000000000000000000000E-130
    ==
    Use oracle.sql.BINARY_DOUBLE for numbers like this.
    eg:
    preparedStatement.setBINARY_DOUBLE(1, new oracle.sql.BINARY_DOUBLE(1.0e-131));
    ==
    hope this helps.

  • How do I get my computer name to show correctly in the finder?

    I recently upgraded to Yosemite and following that upgraded to an SSD drive. Life is good and I am happy with everything except that since the upgrades I am seeing a silly variety of names for my computer.
    I renamed it to The Shire and now it shows up as The Shire (2) or The Shire (3). No matter how many times I change it back in Preferences > Sharing, it keeps adding all those extra numbers. There are times when I see four or five different iterations of my system - see attached image.
    To add insult to injury, the old name of my system, the generic MacBook Pro (5) also shows in the list.
    From what I have read this may have something to do with Bonjour, but I have not see any solutions out there for restoring order and correct names to list.
    I would appreciate some assistance resolving this.

    As of now this is simply a workaround for a bug that will hopefully be fixed in a future version of Yosemite. The only impact it may have on you is if you rely on using bonjour connections for any of your peripherals such as a bonjour-enabled printer. Otherwise, you will not notice a problem at all.

  • Shows follwing error when trying to refresh the database?

    Hi All,
    When i try to refresh the database its showing the following error.
    com.hyperion.planning.HspCubeRefreshInProgressException: Cannot complete your request because the database is being refreshed.
    Please let me know ASAP how to reslove the issue.
    Cheers,
    Kittu.

    Looks there is an other process running on the database, you can check from EAS sessions or check logs for other activity running on the application.
    If you think that nothing is running & no users logged in, you can try unlock application from planning/essbase outline and try refresh.
    But pretty sure that some other activity is running on application, like sec refresh or data load or users trying to retrieve/load...etc...hope this helps.
