Computer shuts down when battery is at 45% used

When running on the battery the computer shuts down completely when the battery shows about 65 % left. Then I have to use the command start to get it going again, any thoughts?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery - make sure you do this re-calibration every 2-3 months (I'm guessing you've never done it?)

  • Computer Shuts Down When Battery Gets Low

I have a few interconnected issues and one peripheral issue:
    1) When battery charge gets down to between 20% and 10%, by MacBook shuts off. It doesn't go to sleep. It just shuts off.
    2) Battery loses charge quickly (I get about 1.5 hours of use out of it, which is no good for a machine that's a year old, right?)
    3) I think the machine runs to hot and fan gets too loud.
The above all occur when set for "better battery life" and when doing light web surfing, ichat, and playing music in itunes. I did the firmware update and no change to these problems.
    Then there's this...
    4) Distorted screen, specifically horizontal green lines, when trying to watch a DVD through FrontRow.
Anyone experience this? I just am curious what to expect before I take the machine in...again (it was treated for RSD).
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm running on battery now.. saving all my work diligently pretty much every minute on the minute... currently 1hr 42mins remaining of battery life - so it says.
This compleatly unnanounced shut-down has happened twice to me now, and it's very disconcerting. This is the only problem I've ever had with my MacBook (bought it August last year) and is annoying as I KNOW it was this 'update' is responsible. I lost about 40 mins of work because of this yesterday and am pretty annoyed about it frankly. My battery seemed fine before hand - I actually was typing away happily on it in the back of a four hour car journey just last week, eeking out the charge by turing the screen right down etc. SURELY if this is known, and is obviously software/firmware created, Apple can offer a similar patch to correct it??
I'm in the UK and a day-trip away from any Apple Store. Do I have to phone Apple and ask for a replacement battery? Is that how it works (like I said - I've never had technical difficulties with my MacBook previously). I searched the site and found this number: 0870 876 0753, I think that's right. What should I have ready on the phone?
REALLY hope this can get sorted soon as I can't really trust the machine at the moment without it being plugged in, making taking it out anywhere (which is why I got it - and loved it) pretty redundant.

  • Computer shuts down when I click on the list or grid display button

I've uninstalled an reinstalled 3 times and instead of the computer shutting down when I start itunes as it was doing, it only does it when I click on the display as a list, grid or cover display button. However it seems to unistall some parts at the same time as I can't open it all afterwards (error message says its not installed). This started to occur after a couple of weeks of non use and when I last used it I purchased songs from itunes. I now have current version but didn't when it first statred to happen. Help!!

Okay ... we'd better have a closer look at the minidumps the PC has been producing to see if they can turn up any additional information on what we're dealling with here.
Open "My Computer", and see if you can find a directory called C:\Windows\Minidump. (That's where minidumps usually go on a PC, so long as the Systemroot hasn't been set to some other folder.)
If it's been collecting minidumps, there should be files in there with names like "Mini(number-numbers).dmp"
(If you have "Hide filename extensions for known file types" enabled in Windows, the ".dmp" extension may not appear on the dump files. The numbers in the file name will be different for each minidump, if minidumps are present.)
Once we've tracked down some minidumps, we can have a go at analysing them.
    1. Download and install the Windows debugging tools from here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/installx86.mspx
    2. Go to Start, All Programs, Debugging Tools For Windows, Windbg
Once you open Windbg, you will presented with a blank screen.
    3. Click on "File > Symbol File Path". Here you will enter the symbols
path. Symbols are needed to effectively debug.
    The path will be:
    SRVc:symbolshttp://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols
    4. Enter in this path and click OK. Now, go to "File > Save Workspace"
so that your symbols path is saved for future use.
    5. Go to "File > Open Crash Dump" and load the file.
(An "Open Crash Dump" screen will appear ... doubleclick "My Computer", doubleclick "Local Disk", doubleclick "Windows", doubleclick "Minidump", and doubleclick on one of the minidumps in there.)
You will/should get a message to save base workspace information. Choose no.
Now you will get a debugging screen. It takes a little bit to run it,
as the symbols have to be downloaded as they are needed.
After the "bugcheck analysis" part of the screen comes up, look for the component that seems to be causing the crash. (It'll say "Probably caused by" ...)
Let us know the precise name of the component. (Include any file name extensions like .dll or .sys.)
If you can, have a look at several of your crash dumps. Are all the crashes being caused by the same component? If not, could you let us know the names of the various components being cited in the various crash dumps?

  • Computer shuts down when I open itunes Store

Computer shuts down when I open itunes Store. I don't know why or how to fix it.. It used to work, now it doesn't. I haven't done anything differently. I tried to 'repair' it in the add/delete programs.

Some more info.................I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and Quicktime.  No fix.   I can access the store on my other desktop computer which I also updtated to the newest version, so I think it's some setting in my laptop.   As I said, it works great until I click on "iTunes Store" then it shuts the whole program down.

  • Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery gets to 80%?  have installed new battery and nothing changes?

Why does my iphone 3gs shut down when battery shows 80%.  a couple of months ago is shut down at 60% but has continually gotten worse.  this was before 5.0.  i took it to a repair man and he tried a used battery, a new battery, and the original battery.  nothing helped.  5.01 didnt help either.  What is my problem?

Fully discharge the battery (till it shuts down and won't turn on) and then fully recharge it (100%).  This will recalibrate the battery meter.  You may need to do this a few times.

  • My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?

My computer shuts down after about two minutes of use or at startup. What is the problem?
Yesterday I used it for about ten minutes.
Yesterday was the first time using it after about 5 days.

Could you tell me how to check my system log, and how to tell if it is the disk cache? I am pretty sure it is not the GPU as I was having the problem using a Quadro 4000 as well.
    Thanks!

  • Computer shuts down when calibrating

Hi.. I've been having problems when trying to run the Battery Calibration and the computer shuts off when it gets to the discharge part of the calibration.  Seems to be when it hits the 15 to 20% part of the discharge.  I'm using a Compaq Presario CQ56-219WM and running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.  The battery calibration that I am talking about is when you first start the computer... press ESC to get menu and press F2 for Advanced Diagnostics then Battery Calibration.  It checks to see if battery is there.. whether it is charged and charges if needed then goes into the drain battery part to find lower limit or 0% of the battery.  It doesn't show any errors detected up to the part of discharging the battery and don't even show that the test was even run in the error log of the Advanced Diagnostic Menu.  I've tried restoring the Bios to default values, uninstalling and reinstalling everything (programs and drivers), did a restore drive to original and updating everything and all is STILL the same.  I've tried calibrating in Windows with the Support Assistant and all I get is the battery needs calibrated is this (after running calibration - waiting 3 hours plugged in and recalibrating:
Status (upper left hand corner): needs calibrating (20) and Charge capacity 51%
Over to the right side of the Screen:  Failure ID - OK     Design Capacity 4400 mAh   Full Charge and Remaining Capacity: 2254 mAh      Terminal Voltage: 12366mV     Design Voltage: 10800 mV    Cell Voltage1: 4148 mV    Cell 2 voltage: 4125 mV    Cell 3 Voltage: 4093 mV       Status: E0      AC Power: True    and a CT Number of 6BUED05BBZUE1G   and showing a charge of 100%.
I realize the battery is getting old but all of this came on pretty much at the same time (short battery life and loss of calibration).  I'm also running default values of HP Power Plan.  Any ideas?  Will a battery going bad cause all this?  Why doesn't the Calibration when first booting the computer, shut down instead of doing the discharg/recharge thing... ?  The power supply checks ok (checked with AC/DC meter).

is your notebook still in warranty?  Warranty status check web page
It certainly seems by your description that the battery has issues.
Battery warranty is for one year, so it would be a good idea to replace it. Be sure that you buy a guaranteed compatible battery that comes with a one year warranty.

  • Macbook slow and shuts down when battery indicator is not empty

    Hi everyone,
I have a 17'' macbook pro bought mid June 2007.
Three weeks ago I noticed that my macbook pro would shut down at 20% battery (if I was not plugged) and would not start back until I plugged it in. I figured it was a battery problem. However, my macbook started getting really slow with the little 'volleyball' icon appearing more and more often without having to use lots of different of programs in parallel.
Also last week I realized that now my macbook pro shuts down automatically at 67% battery! I checked the little button behind the battery and when this happens it shows to me 3 out 5 light indicator. So I'm guessing that the battery is not dead and yet my computer shuts down.
I resetted my SMC (I think that's what it's called) and repaired my disk... I have not reformatted it though.
Can someone help me out? Is the fact that my mac is slow related to its shutting down prematurely?
For info: my battery is 2y old and has 360 cycles.
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!
    Cheers
    aqualover

    Good on resetting SMC.
You should properly calibrate your battery:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284
If that doesn't fix the problem, contact AppleCare about a replacement. Battery warranties were extended to 2 years and maybe you still have a warranty:

    Hope this helps...

  • No sleep but shut down when battery drained

    Hi there,
just bought a new battery for my MacBook - what happens now is that when I get the battery drained alert (10 min) my Mac quits just about 2 minutes thereafter. Unfortunately it doesn't go to sleep so I have to reboot it after connecting it to power...
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

macbig, you haven't read much about recent Apple notebooks, have you? All portables since the first white MacBook has had a 'Safe Sleep' mode, which is supposed to activate automatically when battery power drops below a certain level. Active memory is saved to disk, and the computer shuts down all power draining activities. It is then essentially completely off. The difference between this and a standard shut down is that when the power button is next pressed (with a power supply connected), the system resumes after a short wait, with everything still open, just as it was left. This is very similar to a Windows PC's hibernation mode.
What the original poster here is describing is the problem I am having which brought me here. The safe sleep mode fails to activate, whether the system is active or sleeping. It instead just shuts down hard, as an older model would. In my case, this behavior has been intermittent since my original purchase a year ago. I have calibrated my battery, reset the power management unit, and all the other recommended fixes. My battery is in excellent condition, and in my case, this shutdown doesn't occur until the indicated level is actually at 0%. Nevertheless, it is a feature which is supposed to work, but doesn't. I'm hoping someone else here has experienced this and found a cure.

  • Computer shuts down when backing up

    Hello,
I am using an iMac with Mountain Lion 10.8.3. My Apple Airport Extreme is about one year old (fully updated and current). I am on a DSL connection with AT&T. I am backing up to an external 1.5 TB hard drive (non-Apple brand). There is lots of room remaining on that drive (about 700GB).
All backups in the past have been smooth sailing with no problem.
What's happening now are two things (but one of them I think I fixed). At first, Time Machine would try to back up but it would never succeed because it would give a message that there is not enough space available in the drive (it was saying that it needed 10 more GB of free space). But I know that's wrong. I could not figure out how to fix that issue, so I erased the drive completely and started over. Now, I no longer get the "full" message and all appears to be going well----UNTIL......(see next paragraph).....
Now what happens is that it begins doing the backup process like normal (this would be the first/initial backup since I erased the drive and started over), however, once it gets about 100 GB or so (very rough estimate), the computer SHUTS DOWN. It turns itself OFF. No error window, no warning, no nothing----it just "POOF" turns off. To get it working again, I have to push the power button to turn it back on. There is no error message when I turn it back on.
I am copying (below) the two most recent Time Machine messages from last night from that neat widget/app that I think pondini invented. I sure hope this helps to diagnosis what is wrong, because I'm stumped.
The backup log that says "Automatic" is the first one that failed where it claimed there was not enough space to complete the backup. Once I erased the drive completely and started "fresh", that is what the second "Manual" backup is.

Do a verify of the local disk. The sudden complete failure sounds like a hard disk or memory issue.
    A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
So the hard disk is plugged into the computer directly?? If not, then I think you should do it that way. Backup to Extreme USB drive is not reliable.
YOu don't have an error message for the manual backup.. and I am uncertain what the problem is.
Do a reset of Time Machine. A4.
And try again with the hard disk plugged into the computer directly.
You can look at other suggestions on the troubleshooting page.
    eg http://pondini.org/TM/C4.html
But if you are doing it with the usb drive in the Airport Extreme please read this.

  • My computer shuts down when I put it to sleep

Ever since I used some of those auto-download upgrades my Mac shuts down when I put it to sleep. What's wrong?

Hi gazebo, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
