Configuration, Partition, etc...

I am very new to MAC OS. I just bought a new MAC Book Pro last night. I am looking to run Windows 7 via bootcamp. However I have a few setup configuration questions before I get started. What I would like is a partition that can be used to read/write data between both Windows 7 and OS X. Then have 1 partition for W7 and 1 for OS X.
My questions are this:
1) What should my media/data partition be in terms of type? I know OS X cant write to NTFS, but it can read. FAT 32 can only be 32GB and mine will most likely be 400GB.
2) I Windows 7 you can go into your home directory (ie Users\USERNAME) and right click on each folder and click on the locations tab, and map that user folder to another drive/partition location. Is this possible for the MAC OS X Home directory? If so how?
3) I am targeting having the MAC and W7 Partitions to be ~50gb each. Do you think that will be enough? Should I give W7 more and OSX less?
4) Also my method of getting to Windows 7 is this. I own a full retail version of XP with SP2 that is not installed anywhere any longer. I have a family pack upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium 32 and 64bit. After I install the W XP, I will then run the Family Pack Upgrade which will then perform a clean install. My hope is it will try and do this only to the XP partition and no where else. Any issues I should be aware of going into this?
I would probably be just fine with going MAC OS X only, and I am not really crutching back to Windows 7. BUt I own Office 2008 Enterprise and have a few other applications that may run in both, but may have advantages to running in one or the other.
I am sorry if this has been discussed a hundred times and I just cant find the right "buzz words" or lingo to find it. As I said, I am new to MAC and I am lucky to know what Boot Camp means.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am hoping to get started tomorrow. So speed to respond is great too!

Add NTFS driver to Mac OS to allow writing to NTFS.
Add MacDrive8 to Windows to read/write HFS+.
Forget having a 3rd data partition.
Include an external drive for data (NAS, USB, eSATA)
Run Windows 7 in a VM like Fusion unless you must run Windows on full hardware.
Mac OS X: use SuperDuper to clone the Mac partition
Windows: Casper or WinClone for imaging
Windows 7 beta/rc/rtm have not needed the reloading and clean installs. But DO leave space for restore points, they are handy life-saver.
On three Windows 7 systems I find 60GB to allow room for updates (like SP1 when that comes out) or larger. Luckily all my systems have 4-6 internal drives so I can keep things separate for OS, data, backup, scratch.

  • Error during install configuration(partition error *solved)

    Using either of USB install or FTP install the configuration step is reached but there is no /etc/rc.conf file.
    An error message appears for a short time reporting that /etc/hdw/adj is missing.EDIT: Actual message is:archsetp line 3287 /tmp/install/var/lib/hwclock/adjtime no such file.....also /tmp/install/etc/rc.conf... no such file
    This is using dual install and install x64 selected.
    What might cause this in the install sequence?

    Perhaps the problem is the time mode selected.
    I selected local time but this is not recommended.
    It may be that I need to download a new release and I will try that now
    EDIT: Mine is old release mebbe too old!

  • GParted - Resizing boot partition etc.

    Hi,
    This is what my partitions currently look like:
    I'm aiming to have my 'Archroot' partition resized to soak up the ~25GB before it and to have my Archhome partition soak up the 26GB after the swap parition.
    The first problem I'm having is that when I went to resize/move the Archroot partition into that space the Gparted gave me warning about me possibly losing data/losing the ability to boot since this partition contains my grub stuff.
    The second problem is the fact that my Archhome resize would have to involve removing the swap partition and replacing it again at the end of then newly resized Archhome position. Is it okay to do this?
    Also note that the Archroot and Archhome partitions have reasonably important work on them and I don't want to lose any of it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Huge.

    Gparted always pops up warnings like that before it resizes stuff. Personally, I have never lost anything from resizing, but there is always a chance of that happening. I strongly suggest backing up important directories (like /etc and /home) before you do this, just because everyone should back up stuff. You'll thank me later when your disk drives crash.

    Deleting swap and making it again later is totally fine, but you will have to do two things: first, type
    swapoff -a
    This will turn off your swap partition to make sure you aren't using it before you delete it. When you are done making the new swap partition, you will need to edit your /etc/fstab for the swap partition's new location ( /dev/sdbn ). Then just type
    swapon -a
    and you'll be good to go.

  • Correct way to use AXL API with complex types css, partition, etc. involving: JAXBElement XFkType ?

    I am trying to figure out how to use the AXL API once exploded with the wsimport as explained here...
    https://developer.cisco.com/site/collaboration/management/axl/learn/how-to/axl-java-sample-application.gsp
    ...to use complex types (partition, css, etc).
    --> What is the correct way to do it?
    Example 1: UpdatePhone
    When incorporing a complex type into the addition or update of a component, for instance RoutePartitionName, DevicePoolName or CallingSearchSpaceName.
    his function is not working:
    public void actualizarPhone(LPhone lPhone) {
            try {
                UpdatePhoneReq axlParams = new UpdatePhoneReq();
                axlParams.setName(lPhone.getName());
                axlParams.setDescription(lPhone.getDescription());
                axlParams.setDevicePoolName(lPhone.getDevicePoolName());
                axlParams.setCallingSearchSpaceName(lPhone.getCallingSearchSpaceName());
                StandardResponse response = axlPort.updatePhone(axlParams);
                //return response.getReturn()a.toString();
            } catch (Exception e) {
                logger.error(e);
                //return new ArrayList<LPhone>();
    It seems the right thing to do set as parameter for the "set" the result of the "get" in line: setDevicePoolName(lPhone.getDevicePoolName());
    but it says: "The method setDevicePoolName(JAXBElement<XFkType>) in the type UpdatePhoneReq is not applicable for the arguments (XFkType)"
    Example 2: AddLine
    I also have this problem when adding line.
    And I've tried at least 3 approaches, no success yet:
    1)** Using factory object to obtain an R object
    ObjectFactory factory = new ObjectFactory();
    RRoutePartition rRoutePartition = factory.createRRoutePartition();
    rRoutePartition.setName("autodial");
    2) ** Trying to create the demanded object: JAXBElement<XFkType> myself.
    JAXBElement<XFkType> jaxbElement= new JAXBElement<XFkType>(new QName ("http://www.cisco.com/AXL/API/8.5","XRoutePartition"),XFkType.class,partition);
    jaxbElement.setValue(partition3);
    line.setRoutePartitionName(jaxbElement);
    3)** Using X Objects
    XCallForwardBusy fwdBusy = new XCallForwardBusy();
    fwdBusy.setForwardToVoiceMail("true");
    AddLineReq newLine = new AddLineReq();
    XLine line = new XLine();
    line.setAlertingName("ALerting Name");
    line.setAsciiAlertingName("Alerting Name ASCII");
    line.setCallForwardBusy(fwdBusy);
    line.setDescription("Description");
    line.setPattern("5555");
    I would appreciate a clean example about how to add a line setting a partition, and an explanation about how to use JAXBElement<XFkType> objects.

  • Installed Samsung F3 1TB internal Hard drive configuration partition

    Hi,
    Have just installed a Samsung 1tb internal hard drive and now it comes to formatting and partitioning it not sure what amount of gb and how many partitions to do. I have all my itunes music and films stored on an external 1tb hard drive for information, and also have an external 320 gb drive for back ups. So any ideas what to do with the partitions and gb on the internal drive.

    There will be a lot of views on how the drive should be partitioned, so I will offer my opinion, and state it is only one opinion.
    Take a look at the amount of space you have been using for your operating system, are you planning on upgrading the OS, and then set a partition for only the OS. Make it large enough to allow for future upgrades, maybe 30-40 GB larger than needed so there is enough space for doing installs.
    Keep a partition large enough for all of your software, maybe have that be most of the remainder of the drive after the OS partition.
    Since you keep music, etc., on an external drive it should be easy to keep the internal drive in good shape and unfragmented.
    You could set a partition for temporary files, the /tmp file system, but it is easy to fill that up with a lot of web surfing and get yourself in trouble on space.
    Anyway, my view is a good size partition to allow for OS and future OS installs, and the rest for software.

    With all due respect, I feel that this announcement should be accompanied by some addition documentation or at least a link to a relevant the wiki article.  I don't even have core/netcfg installed on my systems.

    That would be quite easy to understand and impossible to misunderstand.   Those writing announcements should write them like that.

    Yes the announcment bothered me very much.  My overly educated mind trained in scholarly English said to me "What the HELL is netcfg and WHY do I now have to use it!"

  • Nothing Boots on my Mac Pro 1,1 - Boot Drive, Installation Disc, Recovery Partition, etc.

    I tested the boot drive on another Mac and boots just fine.
    Situation:
    On my Mac Pro, about 2 weeks ago I upgraded iTunes and everything worked just fine, used the computer on mulitiple occasions with no problems, power ups, etc.  The last time I powered the computer on, my usual desktop image loaded but then frozed.  I did a hard restarted by powering the computer off and restarted. But this time at the boot process the gray apple logo screen with the rotating gear came up as usual but then went to the white screen.  I performed mutiple restarts, sometimes the blue screen came up.  I restarted in safe mode and booted just fine.  This may be a quick workaround but I can't do much in safe mode.  I've done all of the troubleshooting I can do/find on the net. Zap pram, reset SMC, reinstall OS X Lion via USB(Does Not Boot at all), cloned another boot drive, reinstall OS X Lion on the boot drive via another Mac, etc.  Any last suggestion before ditching computer?

    If you can boot up in Safe Mode, take a look at

  • Can anybody explain all the details about idoc like configuration settings etc..

    Hi all can anybody explain the idoc configuration settings, communication channels sender and receiver settings

    Hi,
    Common steps in both Sender and Receiver:
    Create logical system and assign to client
    Create RFC Destinations in SM59
    Create RFC Ports in WE21
    Steps in Sender
    Create table in SE11 and insert data
    Create Segments in Tcode WE31.Define the table fields in segment
    Create basic IDOC type in WE30.Specify the above created segment name,save and release the IDOC
    Create message type in WE81
    Assign message type to IDOC type in WE82 and release
    Create partner profile in BD64,add the message type ,specify sender,receiver,message type and  generate partner profile and execute.Distribute the model view
    Check the partner profile in WE20
    Develop a report in SE38 with code that transfers the data from source to destination
    Execute the report and specify the fields to be transferred
    Check the control records in WE02
    Steps in Receiver:
    Create an update function module in SE37
    Assign the function module to logical message
    Define input method in Tcode BD51
    Create process code in WE42
    Generate partner profile in BD64
    After executing the report in sender system check in the destination system table wheather the fields are transferred
    In this case a custom table has been created in sender and receiver with same structure.We can even transfer the standard table fields by using idocs

  • EISA Configuration Partition

    I am frequently running out of disk space thanks to Lenovo's Rescue & Recovery, which often uses 50+ GB of my 120 GB. I also found that I have an EISA partition that is a little more than 5.0 GB. According to a number of forums on the web the EISA is an old standard "backup" from 1988 which is used by manufacturers of IBM compatible computers (PCs). But as far as I can tell, it is usually some tens of MBs, not multiple GBs big. Is there a reason it is so darn big? More importantly, is there any way I can make it smaller or perhaps remove it?
    Thanks!

    The 5.0GB hidden portion of your HD is the recovery partition that enables your Thinkpad to restore itself to the original state it was in when you received it.
    If you've made the set of recovery CDs or CD/DVD for your system, you can safely recover that portion of your HD.
    Regards,
    James
    Full disclosure, I don't work for Lenovo.

  • Advice wanted: adding new HD, partitions etc

    Hi everyone,
    Just a quick request for tips rather than a problem - my G5 is working 100% fantastic.
    I've just ordered a new internal hard drive (Deskstar 500GB) for high def video and will install it in the 2nd bay to sit alongside the current 150GB disk. Question is, how should I manage the new capacity?
    For example, I've currently got my iTunes library (40GB and growing) and a bunch of QT movies (70GB and growing) on an external firewire drive which I'd like to bring in somewhere.
    My system disk is right now at 85GB used, 63GB free but is usually more crowded than that.
    I've read that it's good to keep the system disk to maximum 80% (?) usage to allow plenty for VM.
    So do I clone my current system disk to the new 500GB monster and use the resulting excess space, together with the freed up 150GB as my FCP area? Or do I perhaps make a partition just for the system on one of the discs - if so, which one would be best and how big is big enough?
    Any tips gratefully received!
    Jason
    Dual G5 2.5Ghz, Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz, iPod 40GB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2GB RAM

    Hi Jason;
    Let me start by saying that I have usually found that partitioning a drive and then using the partitions for productive work ususally leads to lower performance because the are continually being forced to move back and forth between the partitions.
    Personally if it were my system, I would leave your system where it is. If you feel that you need more space on your system disk then you can migrate your music library over to the larger disk later. It will not be necessary to partition to do that.

  • Win7 64, Osx, hd partition, etc

    Hi folks
    So i just bought my first macbook pro mid2012 2.6 ghz
    i plan on purchasing an crucial m4 256 gb, put my 750gb 7200rpm stock drive in the optical bay with an OWC data doubler.
    Coming from a windows background i'm new to osx.
    What would be the safest way to format the 750gb drive? Should i split it half ntsc and the other half apples format?
    ideally i'd like to be able to read/write to the 750 gb drive while using win7 and osx.  I know that you can use macdrive as well as ntfs3g
    i did some searching but couldn't find any definitive answers.
    osx did not include an install disc --
    i was curious if it would be better for me to just do a clean install with the m4 or clone the drive.
    any relevant links to being able to create my own install disc would be awesome.
    what is the best method to make a backup that i can install on the new HDD?

    Before you do any partitioning you should read the Bootcaamp help and installation manuals. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
    Use Bootcamp Assistant to create your Windows partition. if you proceed with partitioning first you will have nothing but problems and won't be able to install Windows.

  • Installing Oracle - /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure command missing?

    I've AMD64 system with Ubuntu 11.04 installed. It's been rough ride for me to install oracle-xe-universal. I've already spent more than 2 days on this. Still unsuccessful.
    1) First I downloaded the packages libaio_0.3.104-1_i386.deb and oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb
    2) Then I ran
    sudo apt-get install bc (ran fine)
    sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture libaio_0.3.104-1_i386.deb (ran fine)
    sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb (gave me dependency error for libc6 (>= 2.3.2), I modified the control file to remove dependency and rebuilt the package) (now worked fine)
    Oracle xe is now installed. Then I tried to start the DB it started but it's HTTP client never started. So I decided to uninstall the oracle-xe=universal. None of the sudo apt-get remove oracle-xe-universal command's didn't worked for me. So i went for manual uninstallation directions as per oracle link.
    I ran the following command-
    Manually uninstalling Oracle 10g
    sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/oracle /etc/oratab /etc/init.d/oracle-xe /etc/sysconfig/oracle-xe /usr/share/doc/oracle_xe /usr/share/doc/oracle_xe_client
    Then I again ran the following command to install oracle-xe
    sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb
    See below what I got as the output-
    rocky@ubuntu:~/git/mygit/edas2/libaio$ sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.1_i386.deb
    dpkg: warning: overriding problem because --force enabled:

    Now if I try to run the following command, it says command not found-
    rocky@ubuntu:~/git/mygit/edas2/libaio$ sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure
    sudo: /etc/init.d/oracle-xe: command not found
    rocky@ubuntu:~/git/mygit/edas2/libaio$
    Even in applications menu I don't see the if oracle has been installed.
    So i conclude first time installation was ok but somehow http client didn't worked.
    After manual uninstallation, second installation didn't even loaded/installed the oracle-xe in init.d directory.
    Please help here.

    Any reason you are not using a supported OS?
    And any reason you are running two threads on the same problem? /etc/init.d/oracle-xe is missing?

  • Exactly what partitions is the BIOS checking for when starting a HP mini 110?

    My niece has a HP mini 110 that failed one day. On doing a bios hard drive check it failed (7 on read). I though I'd have to get a new one so I ordered another. While waiting for this to arrive I got access to a SATA usb bridge and as the opperating system was beyond repair and the disk unreadable by the HP mini, I decided to try to repair the disk. So I reformatted the old drive using my desktop computer. Windows had no problems with the drive and it seemed to run fine.
    I also had to order the recovery disks (windows 7 intro).
    Anyway on trying to reinstall using the recovery disks via USB DVD drive. It kept coming back with error 17 - which I found to be a hard drive error. I also tried installing using a Windows XP installation disk and this was more self explanatory it said there was either NO hard drive installed  - or 'it didn't match the hardware specs for the unit' (or words to that effect)
    On getting the new hard drive - same problem. Even though both of these hard drives work as USB drives connected to my main desk. SO, my conclusion is that on boot up the BIOS inspects the hard drive, checks to see the configuration of the formatting. i.e. the size and partitions etc. and when these are not matching the BIOS idea of proper specs it rejects the hard drive and considers there is none installed.  Or perhaps there needs to be some basic files on the hard drive. Whatever the case, the bios concludes there is no hard drive and will always return a 'fail' in the bios hard drive test.
    Any ideas on this? I need to find out exactly what partitions are expected by the bios. Does anyone have these specs, or perhaps you have a HP mini and can examine your hard drive and tell me the partition amounts and sizes?
    Unless I can get the bios to recognise the hard drive I can't see how I can reinstall the OS on to it. Any and all help much appreciated.
    Thanks
    When it comes to fixing computers the longest word in the English language is "JUST" . . . as in 'you just do that and it will work' :-)

    beevo you have used your logic to come up with the answer but in this case you are just a little bit off. The hard drive error you see in the BIOS is a SMART error. This is read out by a chip inside the hard drive itself working in conjunction with the BIOS. The chip stores data and is constantly testing the drive and if the read time or seek time or such such parameter is out of whack it reports that to the BIOS and you get a SMART error. It is a pure hardware thing and has nothing to do with any partition scheme or anthing else to do with the actual contents of the drive. A blank hard drive (written with all 0s) will still throw off a SMART error if there is such an error. SMART errors vary in severity but my rule of thumb and the mainstream thinking on this is treat a SMART error like a diagnosis of an incurable cancer. The patient might live a while but his days are numbered. Back up, as stated above, and buy a new hard drive which you have apparently already done.
    A drive with errors will sometimes format fine in Windows and work just fine as an external type drive with a usb connection but you would not want to use it for an operating system.
    The fact that WIndows XP is not seeing the drive on installation is a Windows XP thing. Windows XP does not recognize SATA hard drives. You need to slipstream in a SATA driver while you run XP installation by either modifying the install CD or using a usb external floppy disk.
    To be clear, have you tried the recovery disks with the new hard drive and you still get the error or you have only tried to install XP on the new drive? If you are getting the error 7 with the new drive, you may have bigger problems such as a bad storage controller on the motherboard. That kind of error can cause the BIOS to read out a SMART error, too. You might want to try a hard reset on the computer by removing battery and AC adapter, hold down the power button 30 seconds and then try to start it with the AC attached. You can also boot it with no hard drive in and try resetting the BIOS to default settings and try the hard drive again.
    Also to be clear, is the error 7 actually showing up in the BIOS or is it showing up during installation from the recovery disks? Are the recovery disks Windows 7 or XP?
