Configure User Preferences?

My company is abandoning Toad (except for certain power users and admins).  Most of us will only have SQL Developer now.  So far I am impressed with version 4.0 over the previous version and I guess I'm at the point where I want to configure the tool as much as I can to my preferences.  So I'm asking if there's any documentation on configuration settings with an explanation of what they are for and how to implement?
As an example...filtering.  Our database has a LOT of objects and I would like to filter them out as a default when I open the program.  At present it looks like I can only filter on one parameter where Toad had a whole host of parameters that you simply clicked a checkbox to include.  There were other filters as well, some included drop down lists or text boxes where you could type in your own values.  Toad has quite an extensive list of customizable preferences.  I'm hoping SQL Developer will reach a similar point as well if it's not already in there someplace.
If there isn't any documentation on preferences, are there any good resources or forums where such information is being shared?
Thanks

Welcome to the club! I think you'll find SQL Developer has everything you need and most of what you want. And we're adding more and more each and every release - as you've noticed with v4.
The preferences are documented in the Help. On the preferences page, hitting the Help or F1 button will bring up that page. MOST of them are documented. If you have specific questions, feel free to post them here.
As for the tree filters for object lists - there is no free-hand filter where you can put in your own predicates. So you're limited to:
hiding MVs
hiding AQs
hiding tables in the recycle bin
hiding based on created or last DDL date
hiding based on name, with or w/o wildcards
And you can additionally use the tables filter to specify to show synonyms as tables for users that don't actually own anything but want to see 'their objects' right away.
I used to use your tool too, and I have a few posts over on my blog on how to do specific things in SQL Developer that you might find handy. And of course on our product page we have lots of video tutorials and hands on labs.

  • How to configure user preferences for each platform

Currently i dual boot Kubuntu and windows 7 and use a single profile that is shared by both the OS's. The problem is that some changes such as auto-scrolling, double click to copy url text are disabled/configured differently in linux to what i like. I can manually enable auto scrolling in linux, but when i switch to windows and then switch back it is disabled again.
Is it possible to make a user.js file that sets preferences based on the operating system, eg: user-windows.js, user-linux.js or something like that? I know I can use different profiles for each OS, but it requires keeping all the addons/bookmarks in sync everytime i switch, which i do atleast a couple of times a day.

hello, with the mozilla.cfg file in the firefox program folder you can set preferences independent of the profile: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences
edit: these functions can be used in the mozilla.cfg file:
defaultPref(); // set default value of a preference
pref(); // set pref, allow changes during session
lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes

  • Default user preference of Planning

    Hi,
I would like to ask if I can set the default value of user preference of all users in the same time? For example, I would like to set the default value of Planning Preference of all users as "Use application default".
    Thanks very much.
    Porcia

Another option, which may be considered somewhat safer and has the advantage of not requiring a Planning service restart, is to use Lifecycle Management (LCM) to export user preferences (Configuration > User Preferences) from the application to the file system, modify the XML file as necessary, and then use LCM again to import the modified file back into the application.
I'll add a word of caution that I haven't used this approach myself for this exact scenario, but it should work in theory!

  • Transferring user preferences and configuration by importing plist files

At my job, we use iMac desktops. These are simple imaged workstations on a local area network, on which we login using a unique LAN user and password. I am particular about the configuration of my workstation and do a lot of configuring in System Preferences, as well as having my own bookmarks and whatnot. We do not have dedicated desks; I often find myself sitting at a desk I haven't sat at previously, and must reconfigure settings, import bookmarks from an HTML, etc.
I've noticed that I can easily export and import my keyboard text shortcuts between desktops by highlighting everything under System Preferences >Keyboard > Text and dragging it to the desktop, creating a keyboard plist file, and dragging this file into the same pane on a yet-to-be-configured desktop to easily import them. This saves the trouble of having to reenter them every time I'm at a new workstation.
    My questions are these:
—Are other personal preferences as easily transferable using plist files? Specifically my Dock preferences/layout, settings like Hot Corners, wired Apple Mouse configuration, Launchpad layout, etc.
—If so, which plist's would be required?
—Would I have to use Terminal?
—Is there an easier way to accomplish this without plist's?
Being able to copy and paste plist's into my user library to auto-configure my preferences and setup on new desktops would save me a lot of time when sitting at a new desk.
    Thanks!

If the specialist did a full backup, all you have to do is run Migration Assistant, which is in Applications / Utilities, and it'll basically put the machine back the way it was. If all he did was save some data files, that stuff is gone.

In administering this policy I am a little confused.
We have a policy that distributes proxy settings in the internet explorer maintenance settings section - however when opening this policy up in GPO editor the internet explorer maintenance section is not present.
I plan to apply the settings via User/preferences/control panel settings/ internet settings (or registry settings from article) however I am unable to edit the settings for internet explorer maintenance and these will persist. Ideas????

  • Changing Default user Preferences in Workspace

I am using HFM 9.3.1. Each time I set up a new user I have to get them to log in, and go through the following routine..
Go to File>Preferences. Then Select Financial Reporting on the left side of the preferences window. Under the Preview heading on the screen are two radio buttons for On and Off. Select On and click OK.
Does anyone know how to change the default setting on this Preference to On?

From the workspace administrators manual, the directions are:
Assigning Reporting and Analysis Default Preferences
User Management Console enables users with Provisioning Manager and Explorer roles to set
the default folder, new document folder, and start page application preferences for users and
groups. Individual and group preferences have precedence over default preferences.
For default preferences to succeed, users and groups must have the roles and permissions
necessary to access specified folders and interface elements.
Provisioning Manager is a Shared Services role that enables you to provisions users and groups
to applications. It is also required for setting default user preferences for Reporting and Analysis.
For more information, see the Hyperion Security Guide.
➤ To assign default preferences for Reporting and Analysis:
1 Select Navigate > Administer > User Management.
2 Log on to User Management Console with a user name provisioned with Provisioning Manager and Explorer
    roles.
3 Expand the Projects node until a Reporting and Analysis application is displayed.
4 Right-click the application name and select Assign Preferences.A three-step wizard is displayed in the Process bar.
5 For step 1 of the Wizard, Select Users, select Available Users or Available Groups.
6 From the left panel, select user names or group names and click the right arrow.
To select consecutive names, select the first name, press and hold down Shift, and select the last
name. To select names that are not consecutive, press and hold down Ctrl, and select each item.
Use Add All to select all names.
7 Repeat steps 5 and 6 to select a combination of users and groups.
8 When all user and group names are displayed in Selected Users and Groups, click Next.
9 For step 2 of the Wizard, Manage Preferences, specify these default preferences for the selected users and
    groups:
    Managing Users 41
    ● Default Folder—Repository location of the default folder.
    ● New Document Folder—Default folder in which the new document wizard searches for
valid data sources, that is, Web Analysis database connection files and Interactive Reporting
    documents.
    ● Start Page—Reporting and Analysis interface displayed after logging on. Select None,
    Explore, Document, Favorite, or Scorecard.
If you select Explore or Document for Start Page, you must specify a repository location.
10 When all preferences are specified, click Next.
11 For step 3 of the Wizard, Finish, choose between three tasks:
    ● To configure options for another application, select one from the View pane.
    ● To change preferences for currently selected users and groups, click Back.
    ● To specify another set of users and groups and set their preferences, click Continue.

  • User Preference Panes dimmed, unable to access...

I am "in charge" of our network which consists of 10 PowerMac G5s, an XServe and XRAID. We are currently running 10.4.6 throughout.
We are adding some WACOM tablets to a couple stations, but I have been unable to access the WACOM preference pane in the system preferences. The WACOM software creates a new row below the "System" row, and adds it's preference pane. When logged in as a user this pane is visible, but dimmed out. When I log in as root the preference becomes available, and I am able to tune the tablet.
I have used the latest driver, and have installed / uninstalled a few times. I have installed as root, and as a user with identical results as above.
The Workgroup Manager has NOT been configured to manage user preferences; there are three options that I see, "Never", "Once", and "Always"- "Never" is selected.
I am looking for a way to make the WACOM pane available to the user. Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

Tried Repairing Permissions on the machine after installation?
I would have thought that installing as Root would be a bad idea (might cause permissions problems). An 'admin' user should be sufficient. Do 'plain' users have any restrictions set on them in their Accounts preferences?
It doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the server though, (if you are not using managed preferences). If you get no joy here (server forum) you might want to try the genera Tiger forum area.

  • User preferences keep on changing

    Hi,
All of a sudden, some of our users are loosing their preferences continiously. The worse part is columns shown and the order that they appear.
It's very hard to work this way as columns go to a strange order and you see the wrong columns. No patch has been installed and only minor changes have been made to our add-on, which in no case works with user preferences.
    Thanks!

    Hi Sergi,
We have the same problem. But it is not easy to know in what circunstances happens this configuration loose.
One known scenario for this behavior is this:
One User logs using User A. Another user logs using User A.
Firs user makes some configuration changes and Closes B1 (this is the moment when B1 saves the configuration). Then Second user closes B1. This saves the configuration, and changes made by the first user are lost.
Another times, when an error happens and B1 is closed, looks like the configuration is reseted.
I haven´t get any good answer from SAP about this issue.
Try putting a message and good luck.
    Hope helps,

  • Can't change user preferences when Acting As a user

I've configured the 'Act As' functionality so as an administrator (Proxy User) I can log in as another user. However when I attempt to change any of target user's preferences I get the following message :-
"Exception occurred when saving user preferences to the catalog access denied for user to path /users/[email protected]/_prefs/userprefsxmlstore"
Proxy Level is set at full for all users.
I've tried changing the permissions on the users folders via the Catalog manager but doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Any help would be great!

  • Business Object 6.5 Retain User Preference

    Greetings All,
I'm currently administering a couple of box with BO65 installed. Lately, my customer are complaining that their user preference are not automatically saved on the server. Once the application is closed, the preferences are lost. Preferences here are referring to those toolbars which are not turned on by default when user logs in to BO65. Hence, how should I configure so that my customers can able be able to retains its preference (ie toolbars turned on) for every session? Or is this just how BO 6.5 behavas meaning it can't retain user's preference? By the way, my environment is currently hosting BO65 with citrix just in case if that would make any different. Any advice is much appreciated!!

  • Authlessanonymous & provider commands (user preferences?)

    Hi,
I have a question about the desktop for authlessanonymous.
When not logged in to the portal (i.e. being user authlessanonymous) and I click on a provider command, e.g. minimize channel, then I get a serious desktop error before the channel gets actually minimized. Is this normal behaviour?
It seems normal to me that the providercommands (minimize, maximize, detach,close,...) or some kind of "user preferences". Since authlessanonymous user is actually "a user account everyone uses", we cannot really speak of user preferences. So it would be normal behaviour to not have those buttons in the channel frame, I think. Except perhaps the help button.
So I better modify my jsp files (providercommands.jsp or so) and not show those buttons there.
    Or am I wrong?

What you describe is correct. The desktop for the authlessanonymous user should be read only. The way to configure this is to remove all of the links for "content" ,"layout", "theme", etc. Also, remove all minimize, maximize, detach, restore, etc. buttons from the frames of the channels. This can be done by setting the minimizable, maximizable, etc. properties for all of the channles for the authlessanonymous user.
Notice that this is already preconfigured for the authlessanonymous desktop when you install the sample portal. There is a display profile and a custom desktop type that are assigned to the authlessanonymous user. These handle the settings that I mention above. If you add more channels to the authlessanonymous desktop, then they must be added in the same manner as other channels so that the editing capabilities are not accessible.

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work.<BR>As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to.<BR><BR>HTH

  • Setting User Preferences With Javascript In Acrobat X

    Hi All,
Is there a way thru Javascript to programatically set a value in the User Preferences?
I am trying to create a batch sequence that exports PDFs to HTMLs. In the Acrobat X preferences, there is a conversion option that sets the option of "Run OCR If Needed" to true or false.
Edit --> Preferences --> Convert From PDF --> HTML --> Run OCR if needed (True|False)
Depending on conditions, I need to programtically set the value of this preference during the batch sequence before I export the document to HTML. Is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.
    Thank you,

There are very few user preferences that can be controlled with JavaScript, and this isn't one of them.
