Configuring AX to an existing network for iTunes capabilities only

I just purchased a new macbook and along with it, Airport Express. I have an existing US Robotics wireless router that is working fine with all past computers and with this new one...expect when I try to link up AX to it. All I want to be able to do is play my iTunes on the main stereo - when the computer is in the office. Utilites is not recognizing any "base station". I have even plugged an ethernet cable directly from the macbook to the AX and it still does not recognize it? Any suggestions?

Still getting closer. First of all, thanks for your time and help. Here's what is going on. I can access my stereo through it, but I have to pull up the name of the AX in my network selector at the top of the screen. Good news is I have music. Bad news is that I can't access the internet when it is like this. So I switch back to my network and lose the sound on the speakers. I realize that this is because it is not set up as an extension of my current wireless network, it is its own network.
I have tried to go through that set up several times, it allows me to get to the part where it accepts my wireless network (and password), then it resets it self...the AX then never gets recognized again. For now I have tunes (when I don't want to be online). I need to walk away from it for a little while...too frustrating!
Thanks agian for your help, you have got me further than I could have gone on my own!

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Help Needed Created Standalone Network for iTunes DJ

I use my MBP to manage backing tracks for a band. I would like to use iTunes DJ for requests from the audience via wireless connection via *iPhone/iPod Touch Remote app*. I would use this option in conjunction with a printed song list and small request cards (for those who don't have iPhones).
I can't connect to an existing network as most venues do not have wireless. I would like to set up my MBP as a wireless base station that can be accessed via an iPhone/iPod Remote app. Besides, I would prefer to have a network that echo's the band's name.
I know I have to use the "*Create computer-to-computer Networks*", but I am unsure of what settings I need to get the network working.
I will use Locations to quickly activate the MBP as the base station.
Any help or suggestion setting up my MBP as a wireless base station would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

Agreed. I'd keep at it yourself. I guarantee it will be something simple.
what are the benefits of a switcher? (never used one before) any recomends?
A switch is just like a hub, except that instead of always sending packets to your entire network, it only sends them where they need to go. The benefits grow with the size and speed of your network. Switches used to be much more expensive than hubs but not any more. Normally I'd recommend almost any Linksys device, but in this case dlink seems to have a better one:
    http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DGS-2205-5-port-Desktop-Switch/dp/B000FIVDIA
Again, I don't think your dlink hub is responsible for this dramatic bottleneck though.

  • Configuring Time capsule to existing network

Existing network consists of Cisco DPC3825 modem (shaw network with a static IP (this is a home based office)) and a Cisco Linksys EA3500 router. I need to keep the existing router as i have several custom routing tables for VOIP and SIP related connectivity to my Zultys Phone System. I need to find a configuration that will allow me to use the time capsule for backups for my Mac OS (latest release with a new Macbook Pro) and have my 3TB external drive accessable for the WIndows Partiton and other PC's on network.
I tried just plugging the Capsule into the network, but it would never clear the flashing amber 'problem' indicator.
    Suggestions please.

This is pretty simple.. setup the TC in bridge mode before you plug it into the network..
Decide how you will run wireless.. you can turn it off and just use the existing wireless or you can setup the TC to have a separate network.. but as the router is bridged it will function merely as a different AP to the same network.
Bridge is under network in the v6 utility.. change from nat+dhcp to off, bridge mode.

  • Best way to setup personal cloud network for iTunes and iPhoto media?

Looking for a way to free 1TB storage space on multiple Apple devices, but still have virtually anywhere access to those media files with an easy, quick and reliable interface. Mac Mini Server might be a bit steep at $1000. (for that price you can get an MBA 11" or nearly an iMac)
I purchased a WD My Cloud 2TB, but I do not think iPhoto 09 will be able to organize and access photos from not only a network drive, but one that is not Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
    Network Devices
RCN – Cable Network and ISP – 48 MBPS Down – 6 MBPS Up
RCN Cable Modem – Arris TM722
    AirPort TimeCapsule Router A1409 (2TB and USB Port) 3 LAN-1 WAN - Gigabit – a/b/g/n
NetGear Switch GS605 - 5 port Gigabit Switch wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Western Digital My Cloud – (2TB and USB Port) wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Apple TV 2nd Generation – wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Samsung HDTV UN40C6300SFXZA – LAN wired to NetGear switch via CAT6 shows 10/100mbps (Amber Light)
Nintendo WII – wired connection to NetGear Switch
Sony PS3 – wired connection to NetGear Switch
    iPhone 4 – iOS 5 - 32GB – Quantity 2 – WiFi Connection
    MacBook Pro 2010 6,2 – Mountain Lion 10.8.5 – 320GB HDD – WiFi connection - Sync iPhone – 2 Users
MacBook – Leopard 10.5.8 – WiFi connection – hoping to speed up after freeing space.

    Terence,
Any novice friendly, photo management software that you might recommend to achieve a centralized media, personal cloud? (ie Phase One Media Pro 1 or some other)
Maybe Add, Delete and View by many devices, but Editing and Projects on one main computer are the extent of capabilities I would need.
Anywhere, Anytime on Anything, that is what the Apple Ecosystem should be
Freeing up storage on the devices is the wall that we are hitting our heads against. We want to access our old photos while having room to take new ones. SSD drives are great - lighter, thinner, faster, but way less capacity for the price. Add to that the numerous devices that dramatically increase the ability to create content and you have a very foreseeable, major storage bottleneck that Apple has not adequately addressed. They have put considerable resources and marketing into the Apple Ecosystem, and its ease of use and integration. However, they did not create anything to put it all, other than the digital equivalent of boxes in the basement where once a decade you open it up to see what's there.
It just seems like it should not be that difficult to store a thumbnail library on the local to organize the photos by events, faces, locations. Then pull a copy of the photo from the network drive for editing, email, message, etc... then save the photo back to the network when editing is finished. However, if multiple devices can be adding, deleting and editing simultaneously, I guess that would would increase the problem exponentially. Adding, deleting and tagging would be 99% of the activity for consumer level software so it seems there should be a solution.

  • Apple TV & Time Capsule's Hard Drive Used for iTunes Media Only !

I would like to use the Time Capsule Hard Drive just for my iTunes. Not Time Machine. Time Capsule will be my Wireless Base Station (router) as well. But I'm going to plug my Mac Mini into the Time Capsule via Gigabit Ethernet. Will this work & how well (fast) will it stream the media from my iTunes to the Apple TV? I'm not synching any files on the Apple TV's Hard Drive. All Video & Music will be streaming! I know this is not what Time Capsule was intended for, but will it work & again, how well will it stream ? Is there a downside to setting it up this way ? Also, I'm not buying any Movies from the iTunes store. Thanks in advance!

OK, so having my Mac & TC hardwired by Ethernet, is like having the Hard Drive inside the TC hard wired to my Mac? Correct ? I'm sorry to repeat myself but I'm just trying to understand all this. I'm bad with Networking! So you think I should be streaming OK even with watching a movie I have in iTunes (which lives on the TC Internal Hard Drive) on my Apple TV? My Apple TV will be used Wirelessly. No Ethernet to Apple TV. Again, I appreciate the help. I don't want to buy it & find I can't do what I want. B&H in NY have the older TC 500 GB Model for $199.95 And I have a crappy router currently. So I figure I can kill 2 birds with one stone.( I love Birds. It's just an expression! If it works, it would be ideal for my situation.

  • Closed Network for 5 GHz only?

    Hi guys,
Just installed a brand new 5th gen AEBS,
My plan is to use 5GHz band for my Mac Pro which is in the same room as the AEBS and 2.4 for iOS devices and an older iMac.
When configuring I toggled Closed Network which is located under the 5 GHz network name in Airport Utility.
My question is: seeing that the 5 and 2.4 GHz networks now have different names, are both "closed" or is it only the 5 GHz network?
Yes I know a Closed network offers no additional security give the right tools
    Thanks in advance.

Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will be "closed" if this option is enabled.

  • Access of network for first time only

    Hi there,
I have encountered some problems whenever my J2ME application wants to connect to the servlet via the HttpConnection. When i test on the real device, this alert message "Do you wish to access to the network " will always prompt me whenever i want to use the network.
So when i open the httpConnection 4 times, this alert message will prompt me 4 times. Is there any ways for me to eliminate this prompting? As far as i'm concerned, i know there's this feature in the mobile device that allows the setting of network access to ask for the first time only. But i want to set it in codings.
Can anybody help me in this matter? Thanks!

You also need to set your application domain to trusted. Else even if the user sets the permission to always allow ... blah blah blah, the app will still ask every time. You do this by buying a certificate from a TTP.

  • How can I configure a Build Specification to install for current user only

Is there any way I can configure an installer build specification to install my application to the current user's folder? This does not seem possible at first glance due to the limited "destinations" available.
Ideally I'd want the application to be placed in "C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData", or some equivilent where it'd be protected from being run by other users without administrative access.
Has anyone been able to do this? Thanks!
    CLA, CCVID, Certified Instructor

There is a destination called [Personal] that goes to the user's MyDocuments folder.  Whether program files should be mixed with a documents folder could be debated.
I see the [Public App Data] choice, but I don't see a [User App Data] option.
Another possibility would be to allow it to go to Public App Data, but after the installation, run a VI that then moves the program folder to the User's Application Data directory.  However, that probably means updating shortcuts as well.  And I don't know whether that VI would essentially step on itself in trying to do that move.
Maybe another choice would be to allow it to install to the program file directory, but use CACLS to prevent users from accessing that directory except for explicit permissions to the one or more users you want to allow to execute it.  An advantage is it would allow one user to install a program for another user to use.  The disadvantage is the person doing the installing would almost certainly have to be an administrator.
A disadvantage of the method you desire is that a user has to be the person logged in and install it for themselves (assuming that group policies allow non-admin users to install their own programs).  Another disadvantage is if you want to have more than one permitted user, it would need to be installed multiple times, one for each.
Perhaps you could install security at the front end of your applicaiton.  Anyone can run it, but the application determines if the currently logged in user is permitted to run it when comparing against some sort of encrypted file that lists valid users.  If the user is permitted, the program moves onto normal operation.  If not on the list, the program tells them so and never advances onto normal operation.
Perhaps someone else can determine if there is a path tagged within the installer builder that goes to the User App Data that I am missing.

  • VoiceOver for iTunes not only Shuffle

I'm a recent owner of an iPod Shuffle and I am thrilled with the VoiceOver capabilities. It is so intuitive that it takes my usage of an mp3 player to a newer level.
Nevertheless, I from time to time listen to music and other content in may computer while I work. And I found myself trying to get the name of the song or skipping to a different Playlist using the built-in buttons in my earphones. Which of course do not work, but I wonder why? if it works on a micro device like the shuffle, why not in the computer. Isn't it logic? I mean, it does help to have the playlists names read aloud while you keep your eyes on your task and just press again the button when you hear the playlist name you want, or for people that is listening to a record which doesn't sound familiar to check for the name of the artist?
Any ideas on when Apple will include VoiceOver Kit as an iTunes feature?
    Message was edited by: RodrigoCB

VoiceOver on the shuffle is there because there is no other way to identify what you are doing (no screen).
Any ideas on when Apple will include VoiceOver Kit as an iTunes feature?
VoiceOver has been a part of Mac OS X since Tiger (10.4).
Turn it on (System prefs -> Universal Access) and it will read anything on the screen.
The buttons for the headphones do not work on the computer because you have a mouse and a keyboard for that.
I doubt very much if Apple is working on getting those buttons on the headphones to twork with iTunes on the computer.

  • Airport Express for Itunes Invisible After Adding Time Capsule to AX Networ

One step forward, one step back.
I have an airport express linked to my airport extreme network for itunes streaming. It's worked fine forever. I recently added a time capsule to the extreme network for backup purposes using Time Machine. The extreme and TC form a single network are both connected via ethernet. The TC and express are in the same room. Time machine now is working fine. However, the airport extreme is no longer visible in itunes or airport utility. The light is green on the express and I was able to verify the settings when connecting it directly with an ethernet cable.
In setting up the AX/TC network, it called for the setting 'extend this network' not to be checked. Could that be it? As I recall, it wasn't anyway.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
    JB

Got this working by directly connecting the Express and TC with and ethernet cable. I don't know if this is the right way for this to work since the two devices just happen to be near enough to do that. That said... I'm happy it's working.

  • When i got this ibook g4 yesterday i couldnt access itunes. i didnt know what to do because this is the first time i ever used a mac os. i followed the steps to delete itunes on the apple support web page and now there is no existing file of itunes on my

There is no more existing file for itunes on my ibook and every time i try and download itunes it says cannot create file. Can anyone tell me what to do please?

Open the General section of Safari's preferences and check where Safari is trying to download files to; if this folder doesn't exist or is in a folder used by the system itself, change it to a location inside your home folder, such as the desktop, or another folder you can write to, such as /Users/Shared/. If the download folder is set to one of these locations and you get that error message, click on that folder in the Finder and then choose Get Info from the File menu. Under Ownership & Permissions, verify that you have read and write access to this folder and that the folder isn't locked, changing the settings as necessary.

  • Configuring OSX 10.6.8 server for Airport.

How do I configure OSX 10.6.8 server for Airport when only configured for ethernet? I am moving to an un-cabled and non-ethernet environment. Is it straightforward and do-able by a moderately informed amateur?

Bridged mode — what's more commonly called an "Access Point" or an "AP" configuration — means...
the WiFi devices are network "transparent", and function roughly analogous to a hunk of Ethernet wiring.
the WiFi devices are not operating as IP routers.
DHCP and the rest of your services are running directly from your OS X Server box.
that there is no need to deal with IP subnet routing.
little or no need to change the OS X Server configuration.
portable devices can move among multiple local WiFi (AP/bridged) devices, without reconnecting.
If you choose to run your WiFi as routers, you'll be dealing with all the "fun" that is multiple routers. Which is entirely possible, but an approach that requires rather more knowledge of IP.   Also that if (when?) you start using have more than one WiFi device, that clients will have to drop off and reconnect.
I also prefer a dedicated firewall-gateway box and preferably one with VPN server capabilities, and generally not prefering to use an Airport-class device in that role, nor do I prefer to use an OS X Server box as the firewall-gateway box.  This makes the network simpler, and avoids (unintentionally) exposing ports or such outside your network due to software reconfigurations or sometimes after software installs and updates.
I'd encourage some general homework here, and do some reading on setting up an IP network, IP routing and related. This area is usually fairly simple — once you've done a few — but it's rather more that can easily fit into a small text input box.  Apple has some related documentation here and here and here and here, and probably a few other spots.  Or get some help.

  • AirTunes on Windows PC, no existing network/router.

I want to set up my AirPort Express to stream music from my Windows PC in one room to the stereo in another (it's a small apartment, and the APE is definitely in range). That's all. I have no existing wireless network set up, and no router.
So far, I have gotten it to MOSTLY work, but it was only playing half-second snippets sporadically. The connection is strong, but it does seem to drop out a bit, although I can't tell if it's a problem that would affect the music streaming, as I haven't gotten it to work yet.
The only adivce I can find anywhere about this problem is pertaining to adding the APE to an existing network - is that the only way this will work?
    Thanks in advance!
    AirPort Express   Windows XP Pro

    Dr Van Halen,
I just asked about the same questions in my post. Were you able to get your music streaming from your PC to your receiver through just your APE or did you have to add another device to make the wireless connection.
I'm just confused as to how the APE streams music from your PC without a wireless device between each other?!
    Thanks,

  • Best practice for server configuration for iTunes U

Hello all, I'm completely new to iTunes U, never heard of this until now and we have zero documentation on how to set it up. I was given the task to look at best practice for setting up the server for iTunes U, and I need your help.
*My first question*: Can anyone explains to me how iTunes U works in general? My brief understanding is that you design/setup a welcome page for your school with sub categories like programs/courses, and within that you have things like lecture audio/video files and students can download/view them on iTunes. So where are these files hosted? Is it on your own server or is it on Apple's server? Where & how do you manage the content?
*2nd question:* We have two Xserve(s) sitting in our server room ready to roll, my question is what is the best method to configure them so it meets our need of "high availability in active/active mode, load balancing, and server scaling". Originally I was thinking about using a 3rd party load balancing device to meet these needs, but I was told there is no budget for it so this is not going to happen. I know there is IP Failover but one server has to sit in standby mode which is a waste. So the most likely scenario is to setup DNS round robin and put both xserves in active/active. My question now is (this maybe related to question 1), say that all the content data like audio/video files are stored by us, (We are going to link a portion of our SAN space to Xserve for storage), if we are going with DNS round robin and put the 2 servers in Active/Active mode, can both servers access a common shared network space? or is this not possible and each server must have its own storage space? And therefore I must use something like RSYNC to make sure contents on both servers are identical? Should I use XSAN or is RSYNC good enough?
Since I have no experience with iTunes U whatsoever, I hope you understand my questions, any advice and suggestion are most welcome, thanks!

    2) having a multiple small serverpool consisting of less of number of guest vm I prefer option 1, as this gives me the greatest amount of resources available. I don't have to worry about resources in smaller pools. It also means there are more resources across the pool for HA purposes. Not sure if this is Official Best Practice, but it is a simpler configuration.
Keep in mind that a server pool should probably have up to 20 servers in it: OCFS2 starts to strain after that.
