Connecting the iPod Hi-Fi to Airport Express

OK, a little help would be great here. I purchased the iPod Hi-Fi about 6 months ago and incorrectly assumed that the cabling would be included in order to connect to an Airport Express. For me, that's the whole reason to buy a Hi-Fi vs. another speaker set-up.
After reviewing the discussion boards, it was widely reviewed that the Toslink XtremeHD works great although it's really intended more for the AppleTV. Well, I live in Costa Rica where tech products aren't widely available. After 6 months of waiting, finally my wife went to the states and brought me back the above cable. It doesn't seem to work. Included is one adapter that makes the Toslink jack a 3.5mm optical digital audio jack. I guess though that I need (2) of these instead of one? The Toslink cable doesn't seem to fit either the Airport Express OR the iPod Hi-Fi without this type of adapter.
Any advice would be great, I'm floored that now I'll likely have to wait a long time to be able to finally connect this thing. Even advice for a different cable that actually WORKS would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

You either need to buy another Toslink adapter online or just buy a normal male/male miniplug cable. What is the bit rate on your music? If it isn't really high then the optical cable is just going to be overkill.
Don't know why you would expect a cable for the AEX, why would someone who doesn't have one want to pay for what would be a superfluous cable?

  • Connecting the iPod Hi Fi to Airport Express / AirTunes

i've got everything set up correctly and it used to work before i moved. however, there is a slight difference in the set up now, perhaps this is why it now won't work.
i ONLY have a laptop that is connecting wirelessly to the (wireless) network. there is an airport express hooked up to the router in one room, in another room is a second airport express (the only other one) hooked up to the speaker.
can i not play music through my (wireless) laptop without having a hard-connected computer as part of the network? it doesn't seem to me that this would matter but it's the only thing i can think of...except maybe the wiring from the hi-fi to the AE is bad...
    thanks in advance-

  • Connect Asus Netbook (PC) to Mac Airport Express wireless network

I'm very happy with my PowerBook G4 but recently bought a Asus Netbook as a light weight travel option. Had problems connecting the Netbook to my home AirPort Express system - it's set up as a wireless connection to PowerBook G4.
The Netbook asked for the AirPort password, but then wouldn't accept it. The Apple phone support people tried to be helpful but thought that changing my Wireless Network password would help. It didn't.
Eventually I found a good article that explained the Netbook actually wanted the Mac/Airport WEP key, even though it asked for a 'password'. The article also explained where to find the WEP key on the Mac, and that I had to uncheck the box on the Netbook that says something like 'The key is provided via 802.1x authentication'.
Not sure if I'm allowed to post the address to that article, but will attempt to do so here:
    htpp://www.macwindows.com/airportpc.html
    Hope this helps someone else.

Hello MacNet2. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
PCs, like Macs, can access wireless networks that use a number of encryption standards: WEP, WPA, WPA2, 802.1x.
WEP is the oldest standard and is no longer considered secure. Your new Asus should support the newer WPA & WPA2 standards. Both are not only significantly more secure, but are also easy to work with when using mixed OS clients. Both the older 802.11b/g or newer 802.11n version of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) support all of these standards.
Is there some reason that you wireless network is still using WEP?

  • Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?

Is it possible to print from Windows 8.1 to a printer connected to the USB port on an Airport Express?
    a) HP printer with USB port only (no ethernet port) connected to Airport Express
    b) No issue printing from Macs
    Tests
    1) Installed Bonjour 2 - does not find printer (now uninstalled)
    2) Bonjour 3 is listed in programs but no way to access
    3) Using TCPIP address (and no Bonjour) gives 'Unsupported Personality' error when printing test page
    Regards
    Richard
p.s. why are all Windows 8.1 questios n the forum 'Locked' with no reply?

This is possible, but not with Bonjour or any other fixes.  It is just a printer set up based on the Port name of the Airport, 10.0.1.1.
I found the answer on YouTube, Title: Windows Printing For Apple AirPort Extreme without Bonjour Wireless wifi.

  • I just purchased a wireless connection for my Tivo but the signal strength from my airport express does not allow the tivo to load data. How do I increase the signal strength?

I just purchased a wireless N network adapter for the TIVO premier and am trying to use my apple airport express to connectand it  is in the another room. I am only receiving one  bar of strength on my network adapter. How can I raise the signal strength of my airport express.

There are several things that might help, not all of which would be feasible depending on your situation:  (1) Move the TiVo unit and AirPort Express closer together.  (2) Use another AirPort Express to "extend" the network of the first AirPort Express.  Put the second AirPort Express half way between the first AirPort Express and the TiVo unit.  (3) In the general case, Power-Line equipment might allow the TiVo unit to get a good signal, but it's likely that the Ethernet port of your AirPort Express is probably connected to your broadband modem, so that solution wouldn't work for you.  (4) Changing the band or channel that the AirPort Express is using might help.  If the TiVo unit is connection on the 5 GHz band, try one of the three-digit channels, which are allowed to use higher power.

  • Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time caspule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport Express it worked!

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.
    Any idea????
    Thank a lot in advance!
    Kind regards
    Ingo

Neverthe less, could there be the chance, that this feature could be implemnented with an firmware update?
That would appear to be a question for Apple to answer. You can make suggestions to Apple here:
Apple - AirPort Extreme - Feedback
If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended.

  • My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?

My home network has an Airport Extreme w/Time Capsule as the base and then an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to reach different areas of the house.  Is there a way to use the second Airport Extreme for file storage on this network?  Network is administered through an iMac running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  Ideally, would like for the second Airport Extreme hard drive to appear on the list of devices in the Finder window.

    Ok.. gottcha
The problem is network wise.. Yosemite is about equal to tin cans and string.. pathetic.
Here is my usual set of instructions to get anything working on Yosemite.
The best way to fix problems is a full factory reset of all the AE in the network.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg AEgen5 and AEwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use AE24ghz and AE5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for AE which is router.. it is a problem for AE which is bridged.. you will need to set static IP in the main router by dhcp reservations or use static IP in the AE which is tricky.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Now mount the disk of the second AE in finder... manually.
Use Go, Connect to Server and type in the AE ip address.
    SMB://10.0.1.2
Where you will replace that address with the actual address. The network resource should be discovered and then it will request the password.. type that in and make sure you tick to save it in your keychain.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
Do as much as you want of the above... not all of it is necessary.. only if you want it reliable.. or as reliable as Yosemite in its current incarnation can manage.
The most important thing is point 6.. mount the disk using direct IP address and not names.. dns in Yosemite is fatally flawed.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :

When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

Is your Touch running iOS 5.n? If so, you can administer the AX with the AirPort Utility which you can download directly from the Apple App Store.

  • How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

How to extend the range with a second Airport Express? Do I need a DSL cable?

Thanks, now we need a bit more information, please, in order to provide you with the correct information that you need.
I assume that you already have one AirPort Express.....either a model A1264 or A1392.....set up and operating OK, is that correct?
If yes, you can extend the network either by using wireless or an Ethernet cable with a second AirPort Express.....either the A1264 or A1392 model. A wired connection is the way to go, if possible, since it provides better performance.  But, wireless might work OK for you if you want to try that.
Let us know "how" you want to extend......wireless or wired?

  • Cannot connect my Macbook air to my Airport Express

Unable to get my new Macbook Air to connect tmy existing wifi that uses Airport Express. It just timesout after about 5 seconds. My mew iphone connected straight away.

connect is in the eye of the beholder
connect can be the appletv being able to access the shared itunes lib of the macbook air if the macbook air's firewall is set to allow it and if itunes on the macbook air is set to share the itunes lib at all
connect can be the macbook air being able to use airplay to play music out of the appletv's speakers as one would an airplay express
or airplay mirror which mean displaying the macbook air's screen on the tv using appletv
if the device is supported in that way you can read here

  • Force 802.11ac Connection To Time Capsule Rather Than Airport Express

I have a new Time Capsule and a new retina Macbook Pro, both with 802.11ac.
The Time Capsule is in my main room and my rMBP is in my offce.  In between my office is the kitchen which has an Airport Express.  The reason I have the Airport Express in the kitchen is because some devices such as iPads and iPhones have a hard time connecting to the Time Capsule, so the Airport Express extends the network.
The rMBP has no such problems.  However, because the AE is closer, it stays connected to the AE rather than the TC.  This of course means I don't get any 802.11ac advantages.
How can I force the rMBP to connect to the TC and ignore the AE?

LaPastenague had good advice for you. All that you need to do is use AirPort Utility to enable the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
Then, move your MBP close to the Time Capsule and "point" your MBP to that network.  Then, check to insure that you have the MBP configured to connect to the 5 GHz network first in the connection priority list.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Network
Click on WiFi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Make sure that the 5 GHz network name is at the top of the connection order list. If it's not, drag it there
Make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Remember networks this computer has joined"
No other boxes should be checked
    Click OK
    Click Apply
    Close the windows
Note.....As you know, 5 GHz  signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so 5 GHz works best when wireless devices are in the same room, close proximity, or have line of sight with each other.  If there are several walls or other obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and MBP, the Mac may not connect at high speeds.

  • TS3276 Connect to internet via browser over Airport Express, but Mail app can't connect to internet

Hi - I just moved to a new apartment, and I have an Airport Express that is allowing me to connect to the internet through a browser, but Mail keeps telling me that it can't connect to the internet. I'm guessing it has something to do with the network settings for my Airport Express? Not sure what the right configuration should be. Thanks!

In Mail, from the Window menu select Connection Doctor - any feedback there? Within the window click on Network Diagnostics to see if it offers any clues.
