Connecting to 9i Lite DBMS via SQL*Plus?

Finally got the install to run successfully. However, I can't make an ODBC connection to the database with SQL*Plus. Any ideas (other than going back to 8i Lite)?

Have you created a User Data Source to your Oracle Lite database throught the Microsoft ODBC Administrator? If so, then through sql*plus- you should be able to test connectivity.
Goto a dos command window and type sqlplus system/manager@odbc:your_database_name;
Where your_database_name is the name of the OBDC Data Source name that you have created.
Hope this helps.

We are currently in the process of migrating some applications from Oracle 10 to 11. Our admins have setup a new development system for us with an Oracle 11 instance. Regarding performance the new system behaves more or less the same than our old, e.g. when executing SQLs we notice hardly any performance differences and those we find are slightly in favour of the new system.
But now we discovered that the time it takes to establish a database connection via SQL*Plus is longer on the Oracle 11 system. Running the following code
    sqlplus -s user/pw@database <<END
    quit
ENDa thousand times takes ~60s under Oracle 10 but ~140s under Oracle 11. This may not seem much but we are running a test framework consisting of a bunch of shell scripts where several thousand connections are openend via SQL*Plus to execute some SQLs, so that even this small time difference results in rather huge difference in total runtime. The SQLs themself require roughly the same time in both databases, as already mentioned above they are in fact slightly faster in Oracle 11.
To analyze the time difference I ran a trace for the connect with the following parameters in sqlnet.ora
    TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=4
TRACE_UNIQUE_CLIENT=ONand found out that there is a time difference of about 70ms during the connect handshake:

    (1) [22-MAR-2013 13:33:40:618] nscon: got NSPTRS packetAny ideas what could be the reason for this time difference? Something in our network configuration or something else?

With local connections - I do not think a TCP packet send from an IP to the same IP, leaves the interface as an actual wire protocol/signal. If I'm correct, then running local connection tests will be mostly useless in checking the actual network infrastructure.
Tests 3 and 4 should be showing the same connection times as the same physical network infrastructure is used - only the direction is reversed in the tests.
I would assume that port settings on the switches and interface settings on the routers treat packets equally in both directions between 2 servers. But this could in part explain the problem if this is not the case. In a case of a router for example, the 1st test's ingress interface is the egress interface of the 2nd test (and vice versa). Configurations can differ substantially between interfaces on the same router. Likewise if there is a firewall - as different rule sets are applied in each test and these rule sets could differ.
So I would not be too quick to state that this is definitely not a network problem. But I agree that based on the small percentage difference (assuming comparable tests), it does not look like a network issue.
The next step is to determine what the delay is between the listener accepting the client connection, and the connection being serviced by a dedicated server process.
This will require listener tracing - tracing the time from when the listener accepted the connection (and parsed the TNS connection string), to handing off the connection to the dedicated server process.
As a comparison test, you can also test shared server connections. Dispatcher processes (of the db instance) register themselves with the listener. The shared server client hand off is thus done to an existing server process - no need for the Listener to make a kernel call to load and initialise an executable image.
Shared connections are typically faster than dedicated connections in this respect.
If there is a major time difference, then it means some kind of issue with the listener dealing with dedicated servers as oppose to dispatcher hand off's. As both connections would have had very similar network transit time - which means the connection time difference is related directly to dealing with a dedicated server connection request and hand off.
You can also substitute the oracle executable with a wrapper - and troubleshoot the actual dedicated server startup. I've only done this with Oracle XE 10.2 though and with local IPC connections. Unsure how robust this will be for testing purposes via TCP using 11g.

  • Connection Via SQL*Plus Worksheet

    Dear Friends,
I have a peculiar problem. I am connecting via 9i client to a oracle 8i server.
I could manage to access the database via 9i client's EM and SQL scratch pad. But I am unable to connect via SQL*plus worksheet.
    I got this error
    ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name
While I test the service name via Oracle Net manager, it is successful.
    Anybody could shed some light.
    Regards
    Kumar

Enterprise Manager still has SQL*Plus Worksheet. See:

  • Making connection to Oracle 9i via SQL Plus - Mark

    Hi,
I am unable to connect to oracle 9i via dos prompt or SQL Plus.
I installed the satabase on windows.
The SID is obiwan. Please help, already browsed similar topics and its not happening.
    Thanks in advance.

The Listener is the process that is listening for incoming remote connections to the DB(s).
Database and Listener have Windows services, and services have to be started. Also, from DOS prompt you can do :
    C:\> lsnrctl stat
to see if the Listener is active : the result should be the list of active DB(s).
To connect locally to the DB do the following :
    C:\> set ORACLE_SID=obiwan
    C:\> sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
The result should be something like SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Dom Apr 10 16:58:32 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.
    Connected to:
    Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Oracle Data Mining options
    JServer Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production
    SQL>If the result is something like : SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.4.0 - Production on Dom Apr 10 17:01:29 2005
Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation.  All rights reserved.
    Connected to an idle instance.
SQL>                                                                          then it means that the DB is not up. In this case try :
    SQL> startup
That way you are connected as sysdba, you can startup and shutdown the DB, create users, and so on. Do not use this connection to create objects (tables, indexes and so on) :
create an user, using the command "create user" (See [url http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96540/toc.htm]Sql documentation), and connect as that user, for example
    SQL> conn scott/tiger
    or, at DOS prompt
    C:\> sqlplus scott/tiger
If you create a TNS alias, as I said before, you can use that as connection string from DOS prompt
    C:\> sqlplus scott/tiger@<TNS alias>
or using SqlPlus in the Oracle menu.

  • Oracle 8i Lite: logging to sql plus - uid, password, host string - whats that

If i install "Oracle 8i Lite" (just locally, not networked). There are two important things : "Navigator", and "SQL Plus". If in navigator, I create a local database called "xxx" (tables under 'system' user). Then if i need to query - i go to SQL Plus. Fine, but how do we log in - what is the "host string" ?.
The login needs, Userid, Password, Host String. In some docs, it said the userid, password for 'system' account is 'system, manager' respectively. Anyways, now the host string , i had read the 'host string' will be like "@databasename", so I think for me, it will be "@xxx"
But the way, I'm understing, i cant log, and SQL Plus says something "TNS: could not resolve service name". Maybe i have to something with that tnsnames.ora file....?
Incase, you could give ANY information, kindly inform.
    Thanks

  • How to connect and export specific schemas in SQL plus

    Hello,
Wanted to clarify on a few things.
    - Can an Oracle 10g Release 10.2 client be used to connect to a oracle 10.1 database?
    - Is there an option to "connect" (not refer) to a specific schema, say "SchemaA" in SQL plus in order to run a specific sql code on this schema alone?
    - How can we export a specific schema as a dump file in SQL plus-what is the syntax? Assuming username=U;password = PW; Database=DB and schema = Sch
    Thanks a lot.

    - Can an Oracle 10g Release 10.2 client be used to connect to a oracle 10.1 database?
Yes. O10gR2 client can be used to connect all version of Oracle instance.
    - Is there an option to "connect" (not refer) to a specific schema, say "SchemaA" in SQL plus in order to run a specific sql code on this schema alone?
    connect ShcemaA/pwd@hoststring.
    for e.g.
    connect scott/tiger@oradev
    conn scott/tiger@oradev
    - How can we export a specific schema as a dump file in SQL plus-what is the syntax? Assuming username=U;password = PW; Database=DB and schema = Sch
Export can be done on Command promt not on SQLPLUS prompt.
try the following to know all the parameters and usage of exp command.
    c:\> exp help=y
    exp scott/tiger FILE=scott.dmp OWNER=scott GRANTS=y ROWS=y COMPRESS=y

  • Proxy users  - oracle 9.2  - accessing via sql plus

I may be totally off track here, but here is what I want
    to do.
    I have 2 schema's (schema A and schema B).
schema A has multiple objects (tables) within it.
I want to allow another user, schema B to access these objects. Can I use the Proxy User settings to do this? By going in and allowing Schema B to proxy for this user (shcema a). "ALTER user schemaA GRANT CONNECT THROUGH schemaB"
I try this and then go into sqlplus and log in as
schemaB, but I can't see any of schemaA's objects.
    Am I missing somthing here?
In the past I have always assigned the proper grants to a role and assinged them to schema B as needed which works fine. However, it seemed to me if the proxy user worked the way I thought it would you could do things for an entire schema at one time instead of object by object using the grants.
    Thanks
    John

  • ORA-12154 error when logging into SQL*Plus

I installed Oracle 10g (10.2.0.3.0) server on a Hyper-V virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise as a standalone server. I did a software only install and then ran the Database Configuration Assistant to create a database. I also ran the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant to configure the Listener, Naming Methods, and Local Net Service Name. I ran the test in the Net Configuration Assistant and it was successful after I changed the login credentials to use the SYSTEM account and password. TNSPING of the net service name is successful. I can also successfully connect to the database via Enterprise Manager using the SYSTEM account and password. What I can NOT do is connect locally to the database via SQL*Plus (either through the gui or command line). I get the following error:
    ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS: Could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I've checked and double-checked the LISTENER.ORA, SQLNET.ORA, and TNSNAMES.ORA files. They all seem correct to me, especially since I used the configuration assistants to create them.
Anyone have an idea what might be wrong or what I can check next? Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

They all seem correct to me, especially since I used the configuration assistants to create them. Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Since Oracle throws an error, I strongly suspect you are mistaken.
Simply put, you are using something like "@REMOTE" someplace & somehow and the error indicates SQL*Net does not know to what @REMOTE refers.
How many systems are involved, names, OS version, etc?
post connection string & post contents of tnsnames.ora file.

  • Can SQL*Plus connect via ODBC to NON-Oracle data source?????

I am struggling to understand something. I downloaded Oracle instance client, SQL*Plus and ODBC components with the hopes of being able to connect via SQL*Plus to a non-Oracle/ODBC compliant database.
Is this possible? Or is SQL*Plus ability to connect via ODBC only to an Oracle data source??
    Thanks...

sqlplus only connects to oracle. you can use the odbc driver from instant client to allow other applications to access oracle via odbc (e.g. excel). if you need to connect to non-oracle odbc database (ms-access, foxpro, etc.) you need odbc driver for those sources.
you can use sqldeveloper to connect to oracle and non-oracle databases. check otn product info for sqldeveloper for more details.

  • SQL Plus cannot connect (computers connected via DSL router)

    Hi!
I have two computers connected locally via DSL router. One's IP is 192.168.1.64 and the other's IP is 192.168.1.65.
I try to connect to 192.168.1.64 via SQL plus from 192.168.1.66 by issuing the following command: sqlplus system@"192.168.1.64/orcl.168.1.100" and receive this error: "ORA-12170: TNS: Connect timeout occurred." I thought it was Windows default firewall that caused this and therefore changed windows' firewall settings in 192.168.1.64 by adding port 1521 into windows' firewall list. Now I receive this error: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener."

Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    larry =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
    $> sqlplus scott/tiger@larry
tns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
    A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is the receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
    What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

  • Connecting SQL Plus to 10g XE

    Hi,
I have Oracle 10g XE and Oracle Dev Suite installed on my computer. I want to connect to 10g XE via SQL Plus or from within Forms Builder but I don't know what to specify for Host String (in SQL Plus) or Database (in Forms Builder). "XE" doesn't work. Any ideas what should I put in for those params?
    Thanks in advance,
    Behi

First you must make sure that your tnsnames.ora is configured correctly in 10g Devsuite (Forms)
to do this you either configure it manually or use the Net Configuration Assistant found under
All Programs<devsuit_home>/configuration and migration tools/Net Configuration Assistant.
For manual configuration open the tnsnames.ora found under directory
    %oraclehome%/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
and add a connection descriptor and save the file. remeber to take a backup copy.
your file should look something like this.
    XE =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
      )Regards,
    Tony

  • SQL Developer Seems to have messed up SQL Plus & Crystal Connectivity

    Hi all,
previously I have been able to connect to a DB via SQL Plus. Also, I have been able to report on it with Crystal Reports XI.
I'm not certain, but I believe this has occurred since installing SQL Developer?!?!? Since once I installed, no need to use SQL Plus anymore and just haven't needed Crystal for a while.
My TNSNames.ora in C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\NETWORK\ADMIN seems fine (it worked before)
SQLNet.ora has the following in it......
    #SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= ( TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT )
    A TNSPing returns.....
    C:\>TNSPING PVNGDEV1
TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on 09-SEP-2
    008 17:28:21

    Used parameter files:
    C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name
    C:\>
When I try and create a connection via Crystal I get....
    Crystal Reports
    Failed to open the connection.
Details: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    [Database Vendor Code: 12154 ]
This is sending me absolutely crazy and have already spent 1/2 day trying to fix it.
    Please - any ideas?

PROBLEM SOLVED - WHAT A MYSTERY and a WASTE OF MY TIME.
APOLOGIES TO SQL Develoepr for being the prime suspect - I still love you!
    TNSNAmes.ORA as follows works!!!!!!
    pvngdev1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = ********)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = pvngdev1)
    However, the following does not
    PVODB =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PVODB)
    PVOQA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PVOQA)
    # - Enterprise Reporting
    ERSDEVDB =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = sasrpt)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    # - PVNG
    PVNGDEV1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PVNGDEV1)
    PVNGQA1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PVNGQA1)
    DESTDEV1 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = *******)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = DESTDEV1)
    Why is this.
I guess I 'll build up TNSNAmes connection by connectuion and test and see how I get on.
