Connecting to oracle 12c multitenant database
My question, using coldfusion 11 enterprise datasource gui,
how do you connect to oracle 12c multitenant database,
when you need to log into a pluggable database, beneath
the container database?
What's the connection string, or is it even possible to connect(?) because earlier versions of oracle
didn't use multitenant architecture, you just make a user/password,
grant connect privileges, and connect.
Using Oracle Linux 6.5 64bit.
This is assuming I can connect to the oracle CDB (container database) and PDB (pluggable database) from the shell using sqlplus.
<!------------------------ I can tsnping the pluggable database name pdb1 ---------------------------------------------->

Anyone out there? Kurrttt, did you ever get this figured out?

Oracle 11.2 client connecting to Oracle 10.2 databases
I have an application which currently uses 10.2.0.4 Oracle Client to connect to Oracle 10.2 databases using java (jdbc).
Now I have to do setup on another linux server and looking into whether I can use 11.2 Oracle clinet avaiable on tcehnet.oracle.com to connect to
10.2 databases. I will be using jdbc for connectivity.Maybe showing my ignorance here, but doesn't the application itself have to be written to use the jdbc thin driver?
That would not be typical. A Java application will normally be modular as regards DB connections.
1. The app itself will be written to take an instance of the 'Connection' interface
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/sql/Connection.html
2. The actual 'Connection' instance will be created by a factory method or other application independent code at startup and then passed to the application code.
Just like TNSNAMES.ORA contains the parameters for OCI connections an application will normally use a config file and/or command-line parameters for the JDBC connection parameters.
Naturally, just like everything else, developers can always screw things up by hard coding values. Nothing you can do about that.
See the 'Database URLs and Database Specifiers' section of the JDBC dev guide
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/java.112/e16548/urls.htm#BEIJFHHB
Database URLs are strings. The complete URL syntax is:
jdbc:oracle:driver_type:[username/password]@database_specifier
Note:
The brackets indicate that the username/password pair is optional.
kprb, the internal server-side driver, uses an implicit connection. Database URLs for the server-side driver end after the driver_type.
The first part of the URL specifies which JDBC driver is to be used. The supported driver_type values are thin, oci, and kprb.
The remainder of the URL contains an optional user name and password separated by a slash, an @, and the
database specifier, which uniquely identifies the database to which the application is connected. Some database specifiers are valid only for the JDBC Thin driver, some only for the JDBC OCI driver, and some for both.
Then there are examples of each driver type in 'Table 8-3 Supported Database Specifiers'
Thin: "jdbc:oracle:thin:scott/tiger@//myhost:1521/myservicename"
See that table 8-3 for the different OCI options. -
Need help connecting to Oracle to create database
Am student taking DBA course; have altered pfile so that path shows where createdb is located. Cannot connect to Oracle; keep getting message "insufficient privileges." Createdb file amended per book to "REMOTE_LOGIN_PASWORDFILE=exclusive" and still can't connect. Can I grant connect privileges to internal/oracle? Tried several times to create database and am now using new database name to try again, but when I get to svrmgrl and type in "connect internal" and give password "oracle" as book says to do I get the "insufficient privileges" message again. Need help.
Linda,
when you use exclusive in remote_login_passwordfile is necessary make one file. Use the following instructions:
orapw file=orapw<SID> password=<password> entries=<users>
where
file=name of password file (mandatory)
password=password for SYS and INTERNAL (mandatory)
entries=maximum number of distinct DBA and OPERs (opt)
There are no spaces around the equal to (=) character.
Find orapwd.exe by Windows Explorer

Slow connection to oracle 11g R2 database if no Internet connection
Hi all,
I've read some similar topics, but could not find a solution for my problem. I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise with a VMWare (Player) with a virtual Linux image on my machine (centos 5.4) in NAT connection mode. On the virtual machine I have installed an Oracle 11g R2 database. As long as I'm connected to Wi-FI or I'm plugged into my LAN network, I can access the database and run applications without a problem. But if I don't have an Internet connection, it's almost impossible to connect to the database or use certain applications.
Thanks in advance for your help !
Gianni
Below the settings on my virtual machine:

(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = dmserver)(PORT = 1521))

I also have a local loopback adaptor installed (below some info from my ifconfig):

Edited by: 939190 on Jun 7, 2012 2:04 AMSolved it by commenting out my nameserver in resolv.conf and adding my hostname explicitely to the etc/hosts file in Linux. A good thread on this is: Oracle connection extremely slow(Oracle 11G on Linux RHEL4)

Connectivity between Oracle database and client...
Hi guys,
I was asked to make a connection between oracle client and database via internet so that our clients can access the database from different parts of the country, and the data that is transmitted in the internet does not require security consideration. And I have successfully implemented this.
But later onwards they asked me to structure it in such a way so that clients must be able to select, insert, update and delete data offline, in case there is online connectivity problem.
So my question is, are there any possibilities in oracle to temporarily store data that are available in the oracle database to the client side and then later onwards transfer those datas once the clients are available online. Or are there any other alternative ways...
Additional Information - Client access the database through an application created by VB.
Please do help me on this project.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Asif. You probably should do a cost/risk analysis. Where you are headed might be able to be done (but it will require that the "clients" also have their own copy of the database) but it won't be easy and it certainly won't be cheap, either in initial implementation or in on-going maintenance. The alternative is to take a hard look at your network connections and see if it wouldn't be cheaper/easier to be able to ensure that it is reliable. Remember "the internet" won't break, it is highly redundant. If you have connectivity issues, they will almost certainly be in your own equipment and configurations, so your (your organization) will have the ability to address and fix any issues there. -
Can Oracle 8.0.6 reports connects to Oracle 11g Database
Hi,
I know Oracle 8.0.6 report is already out of support. I want to build some environement. In this context, I want to know, where Oracle Reports 8.0.6 can connect to Oracle 11g R2 database ?
Pl suggest me urgently.
thanks & regards
paragFirst of all: using the word 'urgently' is inappropriate and rude in a forum of volunteers.
Edit your post and apologize publicly for using it.
Secondly your question is a rhetorical one, as it's answer is:
OF COURSE NOT
8.0.6
was succeeded by
8.1.5
8.1.6
8.1.7
9.0.1
9.2.0
10.1.0
10.2.0
11.0.1
11.0.2
NINE releases in between!!!

I haven't seen that error in years... There was a version of Oracles client that did not put the client install into the PATH statement.

What are MD_ tables in Oracle 12c database? What is their purpose?

I just set up an Oracle 12c database with the purpose of migrating an existing Oracle 11.2.0.2 database. Our application developers are a bit confused when it comes to the schemas suddenly having MD_ tables they did not create. Any help is appreciated.
Did you do this using sql developer and the migration workbench to create a repository?
See if anything in this article rings a bell:
http://oraexplorer.com/2008/06/oracle-sql-developer-migration-workbench/#sthash.gNFtpafS.dpbs
Next, you will need to create a repository. An database account, which has CREATE SESSION, RESOURCE, and CREATE VIEW must be created first. Then logon into SQL Developer as that account. From the tool, create a repository from Migration menu > Repository Management > Create Repository. This process creates a bunch of MD* and MIGR* tables and packages.
I ask because you said you 'set up an Oracle 12c database' but then implied your developers are accessing it.
Most people experimenting with 12c create a multitenant database which has a CDB and one PDB that contains the sample schemas.
You typically would NOT allow developers access to the CDB; that is for admin purposes only. So, hopefully, if you developers access anything it is ONLY the sample PDB or a PDB that you have created from the seed.
Make sure you, and your developers RTFM about the new multitenant architecture or you will all get horribly confused when you try to do simple things like create users or issue grants. All of that works VERY differently in 12c.
See chapters 17 and 18 of the Database Concepts doc
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16655_01/server.121/e17633/cdbovrvw.htm
Pay particular attention to the discussion of 'common' and 'local' users. And a hidden 'gotcha' is that the PDBs will NOT be started/opened by default when you do a 'startup' of the database. If you create common users those users will NOT be created in PDBs that are not open; so there is the potential to have to do perform a lot of manual maintenance if you need to add those users to PDBs that weren't open at the time you added the users. -
What features says Oracle 12c, a cloud database?
Hi all,
I'm new cloud computing world and would like to what features bring 12c as a cloud ready database? Is it multitenant and/or are there any more things considering?
thanks
PradeepaThere are many more features that were put in the 12c release specifically to make it a first class citizen for cloud deployments. Please take a look at the following links:
- Oracle White Paper:

Re: Not Able to Create database objects(Tables, etc) in Oracle 12c
In addition to what Nishant said, the PDB databases are not opened by default.
You must open them manually or create a trigger to do it.Hi Nishant ,
Thanks for the reply.
I have done all the steps as you mentioned above. I am not able to create HR user. Please check the below errors and
