Considering the switch to AIR Dev. Need some basic info please.

Hi, I've been developing applications for stand alone, offline touch screen kiosks using Flash and Multidiminsional Media's "Zinc". For various reasons, I'd like to move away from Zinc and go "All Adobe".
Here's mainly what I was using Zinc for.
Reading and writing to a local, MDB (MS Access) database file
launching local MPG2 and WMV video files
scheduling automatic system shutdowns/restarts
Printing to a local printer without a Windows diolog popping up
Based on what I've learned so far, here on the quesitons I have based on the numbered list above:
AIR can read/write to mySQL Lite. However, what about these senerios:
The "Wilderness and Game Commission" from some state has an enormus database of all their state's flora an fauna. I ask them to export it in "mySQL Lite" format. Will I be able to use AIR to read this database? Are there other requirements for AIR's implementation of mySQL Lite?
Suppose we have a "Registration" app on a kiosk that collects addresses and emails from users. Now we have this address/email database file written by my AIR app inside of the storage directory. What can I do with this file? With Zinc+MDB file, I needed only to hand this file over to someone with MS Acces skills to do whatever needs to be done with the data. MS Access won't open the file made by the AIR app. What are my options?
AIR works great with MP4 (H.264) files. However, I could use very old/inexpensive hardware to run MPG2 files in Zinc (which uses directx to open an instance of Windows Media Player, sans WMP interface.) Per my testing, these same machines will not run a similar quality MP4 video. Am I overlooking another AIR option?
Can AIR do this? Maybe with launching a BAT file?
We often have a thermal printer in our kiosks. Zinc provided a way to print something without the pesky Windows print dialog. Does AIR provide a similar solution?
Thanks for any information addressing any of these requirements.

The database engine that's built into AIR is actually "SQLite" (http://sqlite.org/) not "mySQL Lite". It has nothing to do with MySQL, and I haven't found an easy way to export data in SQL between different databases.
The best way I've found for batch exporting/importing data using AIR is to export the data in some text format such as CSV, tab-delimited, or XML, then writing code to import that data into the AIR app.
Suppose we have a "Registration" app on a kiosk that collects addresses and emails from users. Now we have this address/email database file written by my AIR app inside of the storage directory. SQLite is a fairly popular database library/engine but in the majority of cases it is used as an embedded database -- in other words, it's used internally by an application rather than as a file that's shared among users. For instance, Firefox uses SQLite behind the scenes for bookmarks, history, etc.; Adobe Lightroom uses SQLite behind the scenes for it's image catalogs; and so forth. Not that you can't use a SQLite database as the "file format" for your application, and share those db files between users of your application. That's one of the intended use cases of the database for AIR, although in fact I don't know of any case where someone's actually done that.
Some developers have written tools for administering SQLite databases and for viewing/editing data in them. For instance, my personal preferred tool for creating/managing AIR SQLite databases is "Lita":
http://www.dehats.com/drupal/?q=node/58
However, Lita is not nearly the same as Access, in that Access provides not only the database engine but also a scaled down app development platform, including forms, reports, VB code, etc. As far as I know nobody's created anything that complex for SQLite databases (AIR-specific or otherwise).
So I guess it depends a lot on what "do whatever needs to be done with the data" means. If you want a tool that people can use to open a SQLite database file created in AIR, that has some sort of report-builder functionality ... as far as I know that doesn't exist. The exception would be if the person creating the reports knows SQL, in which case they could use Lita or another tool such as my own "Run!" AIR SQLite query runner tool:
http://probertson.com/projects/run-air-sqlite-query-testing-tool/
But of course there could be a SQLite-based Access-like application out there that I don't know about.

AIR can use any of the video formats supported in Flash Player. In addition to H.264, it also supports FLV video, including On2 VP6 and Sorenson Spark encoded video.
Can AIR do this? Maybe with launching a BAT file?
It sounds like part of this question got cut off. However, I can say that an AIR app can't launch a BAT file (or any other executable), if that answers your question.

No.

  • Need Some Basic Directions, Please

    Hi,
New to Nokia and this Ovi Suite. Have 2 brand new 6350's and ready to pull my hair out over the lack of directions for the basics I need to know. I've been all over the Nokia/Ovi site, reading the FAQs and watching the videos and browsing this forum but not finding what I'm looking for.
The directions supplied have you install the software then run it. During that first use of the program you are prompted to choose your connection method (USB for me), then to connect the USB cable to the computer first and then the phone to the cable. Then the phone asks you what method you want to use and to choose the 'PC Suite" method. Then you wait while the program and Windows itself (I am using Win Xp Home) do their things and you get all the pop-ups and info balloons re new hardware detected and drivers and modems, etc.. until finally you get a Windows balloon notifacation showing "ready to use..." and the program shows your phone there in the lower left and all seems well.
    OK - but then what????
What  is the proper way to end your session?
Do you unplug the phone from the cable and then close the program, or do you close the program first then disconnect the cable from the phone?
Are you supposed to leave the program running in the System Tray or can you click 'Exit" from there to make it close totally so it's not sucking up your resources while not actually in use?
Then next time you want to connect the phone to pc and use the program ... ? Do you connect the phone to the cable first then open the program, or do you open the program first and wait for it to prompt you to connect a phone?
Do you have to screw around each use with connecting/disconnecting the USB cable to the computer each time, or can you leave that end plugged in 24/7? If left plugged in 24/7 does rebooting the computer mess it up?
When ending a session and unplugging the phone from its end of the cable,  are you supposed to use the 'Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Windows System Tray? Is Windows supposed to make a "bing-bong' sound every time you connect or disconnect the phone from the USB cable, or only the very first time when it detects it as new hardware?
I've been having nothing but problems since I got the phones and cable and program (downloaded it form the Nokia website) on Friday and I think that a big part of the problem is that I am not properly starting/ending things as far as the physical connection  and THAT is what is not explained anywhere.
Please, please, please, someone, anyone, I really need step-by-step directions on the proper sequence for starting and ending sessions on a regular basis. I may want to connect my phone to PC several times a day but there are no directions on the Nokia/Ovi website for how to do anything past that first initial connection/ setup.

    Hey,
These r just my observations only which may give u an idea
Connectivity :- Since i dont hav Nokia 6350, i will try 2 give very generic answer
Once u want to connect ur device with Nokia Ovi Suite using USB, u may get few options(It may differs from one model to other)
    PC Suite or Nokia mode
    Mass storage or data transfer
    Image transfer
    Media transfer etc.,
If u r using PC Suite mode which is very common to use for connecting ur device with Nokia Ovi Suite, no need to worry about disconnecting ur session by removing ur usb using Safely remove hardware option.  U can unplug once ur session is over with Nokia Ovi Suite
But if u r trying to connect ur device using Mass storage or data transfer mode, ur device will be recongnised by ur pc as a memory stick or pen drive.  People wll select this mode if they want 2 transfer huge files to/from PC and phone.  Once ur operations are over(copying files, transferring files etc), to end this Mass storage or data transfer session, u hav 2 make sure that ur device will be removed using Safely remove your hardware method, this is because if u r using in Mass storage/data transfer mode, w/o using safely remove hardware method if u remove ur device from pc, chances are high some of ur data may lost or it may be corrupted etc., so its mandotary to use safely remove your hardware, if u r conencting ur device with pc using Data transfer or mass storage option.
It is advisable once ur session is done with Nokia Ovi Suite and ur pc, u close ur nokia ovi suite exit it from task bar.  u can unplug ur device from Nokia Ovi Suite(PC) once ur session is over.
    Hope its hlps

Ask in the ID forum and be much more specific about your configuration. there could be any number of reasons why manifests, temp files or restore files are created.

  • Please , I wonder if I can subscribe for more than one sync accout on the same Desktop? I mean that we are multi-users for the same desktop , so we need some privacy.

I and my brothers and sisters use the same desktop , so we need to subscribe for more than a single sync account , and I don't know how. Thank you

If you each have a separate Windows account then each of you should automatically have a separate Firefox profile.
If you use the same Windows account (not much privacy in that case) then you will have to create a separate profile for each of you and a desktop shortcut to start each profile.

  • Selling Mabook Air and need to delete info...

I am selling my old Macbook Air and want to remove any and ALL information/data etc on it.. What is the best way to do this?
    Thanks!

    Hi Tahoe,
I just had this experience and would like to give my input. I am planning on buying a new MBA11 and would like to get rid of all the data on my MBA13 2011 before I sell it.
In order to get rid of all my data, I wiped out my "Mac HD" disk0s1. Few things to consider ...
    1. When formating and reinstalling Lion, it will take 4-9 hours depending on your Internet connection. The Lion software is not located on your SSD. It is stored in the cloud and retrieved during re-install.
    2. The person who you are going to sell your MBA to will NOT get iLife.  iLife is tied to your iTunes apple ID. You should inform the purchaser that they will need to purchase iPhoto, Garage Band, and iMovie.
    Let's get started.
    1. Turn on your MBA holding option + power button
    2.  Let go of the power button but hold onto the option button
    3. Select recovery hd
    4. Choose disk utility
    5. Highlight Macintosh HD in the left.
    6. Go to the right side of the window and go to the ERASE tab
    7. Erase the HD by selecting apply.
    8.  Shut down the computer by selecting from the apple logo on the top left of the screen.
    9.  Repeat steps 1 and 2 to turn on the computer.
    10.  Now select Reinstall OS X Lion
    11.  Wait for the download and reinstall of your operating system. 45min-9 hours depending on your connection.
This is the most simple explanation. I had several modifications to this when I did my re-install. I was able to create a Lion install USB drive containing InstallESD.dmg that I obtained during this re-install.
    I hope this helps.

  • Replaced zd8000 motherboard and need some troubleshooting help please............

    Hello All,
I just replaced the motherboard on our HP zd8000 (pentium 4, 3.0ghz, 2gb ram, Win XP) with a used but tested good MB and need some help with the following.
    1) I now cannot play DVD movies as the error no "dvd decoder" present which was not an issue before?  Where can I go to get a free decoder that will work, as Windows only shows paid versions?  We have the dvd burner/reader with lightscribe. SOLVED! CNET HAD DECODER.
    2) The internal temperature, according to SpeedFan, is running around 140 degrees with just some Internet browsing.  Is that a normal temperature because I only have one of three fans running on the laptop?  Is there anyway of making all three fans run to be sure there are no issues?  I am positive I hooked up everything but again only one fan seems to be running?
    3) I discovered some of the pins were damaged in the card reader.  I may get the Seller to give me a discount, no intention of tearing it apart simply for that, but is there any concern of short or otherwise?
    4) Our battery stopped charging years ago, these were notorious for such, but I purchased a new one last year and hoped the replacement MB would allow charging again.  No such luck though.  Is there anything I can do, BIOS update etc, to make the battery charge?
    5) Anything you folks can think of for me to test to insure the new motherboard is working properly?
    Thanks, Ralph
P.S. This was a correct replacement board according to MB serial numbers.  Everything else seems to be functioning properly other than mentioned.  Our graphics went out on the original MB.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Some of the wires had pushed out of the harness that connected the other two fans.  I double checked and re-attached those so now the laptop is running quite a bit cooler.
    EVERYTHING IS GOOD TO GO!

  • Help with Some Basic Info

hi, i am totally new to smart card development. i want to understand where the pieces fit together. Please consider this scenario. Assummig a company wants to issue smartcards to its clients, to be able to check their say transaction balance, on a server at their office, and the clients can use this card at say ATM, POS terminls etc. let me as the folowing questions?
    1) Will the program that will be written on the smart card contain, network addreses and say port numbers, that card readers on maybe an ATM will use to communicate with the server.
    2) Will there be another program written on the server that waits for requests on the specified port and return appropriate responses.
    3) Will another programbe written and deployed on the chip, that will handle the responses
in summary, how does the terminal where the smart card is used know whic computer to contact and how does that computer and when a request get to this computer, what hapens next.

    Hi,
    java_everywhere wrote:

    java_everywhere wrote:
    2) Will there be another program written on the server that waits for requests on the specified port and return appropriate responses. If you need to communicate with a server, you need an end point to communicate with. You will need some kind of system/software running on the server to handle these requests. Once possability is a web service running inside an application server.
    java_everywhere wrote:

To perform actions such as you have mentioned above, you would need some middleware in the ATM/POS device that is able to communicate with your card. This middleware would need to be configured to be able to find a server it is to communicate with. This configuration data could be stored on the card, but depending on your requirements, that may not be the best place to store it (could become out of date, etc).

  • Renting movies - some basic answers please

Hi, I've never rented a movie before and have just a couple simple questions. The basic info on the help pages didn't answer my questions so if someone could please help, I'd appreciate it.
So you have 24 hours to watch a rented movie, once you begin playing it. What about on your iPod? Does the same restriction apply on the iPod? Can I begin watching it on my computer and then finish it on my iPod or vice-versa, or do I need to watch the whole thing on only one device? Does the 24-hour period begin once I transfer the movie to the iPod? What if I transfer the movie to the iPod and then don't watch it - can I transfer it back to my computer?
    Thanks for helping.

The 24 hour viewing period begins the moment you press Play. I believe that you can transfer it from device to device within the 24 hour period. The movie can only be on one device at a time, however.

  • Considering switching to mac but need some help

Sorry if this is inappropriate for this forum or section. Wasn't sure where else to post. My pc finally died and am tired of viruses, pc problems etc, so I got the green light for a mac from my wife (thinking of a mini). My question is how do I get all my backed up data on my western digital my book (pc formatted) onto my new mac? Is it possible?
I was thinking it is since I've read that macs can run windows. Theoretically I would think that if I turned the mac in windows and plugged my My book external drive, it should recognize it, right?

The Mac should recognize your drive without dealing with installing Windows.
If your data that is backed up is just in folders, etc, then why even mess with windows? I thought the whole idea was to get away from the PC virus issues and stuff.
Mac's can *read and write* to PC drives that have been formatted with Fat32 (common with Win98, XP and most external drives) and they can read drives that have been formatted with NTFS (common with XP internal drives). After you get your data off of the drive, you can use Disk Utility to change the partition type to HFS+ and format the drive for Mac's and Time Machine or just use it with Fat32 for transferring files to PC's etc.
You mount the drive by plugging it in, it shows up on the Mac desktop, drag the files onto your Mac and put them in the proper folders or make new ones.
If your files are standard computer files like PDF's, Doc's, Jpg's, then they will open with MacIntosh versions of the programs you used on the PC or other programs specific to the Mac. In the PDF example, I don't even install Adobe Acrobat Reader on a Mac (who needs the security issues) and use Apple's Preview program instead.
For my clients who are switchers, there are usually only two programs in common use on a PC that are a problem for Mac's - The PC version of Quickbooks is better and there is no MS Access Database program for the Mac. There are Mac versions of almost all of the most common PC programs, or excellent replacement programs for the Mac. Programs are easy to deal with, it's the data that you can't replace.
Deal with Windows if you have to, but many don't and use their files and hardware anyway...
    Hope this helps.

  • I Know I am in the Wrong Room, but I Need Some Help with an Mpeg 2 File

         Hi, all--
Forgive me as best you can--I am in a fairly desperate situation. Allow me to explain, and please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you know a lot about this stuff I'm going to describe.
We have a project, 29 minutes long. It is a slideshow of paintings with original music by me.
I live in central Mexico (love it!). However, I was forced to use a video editor who has been a dunce so far. No matter what I ask him for, whether it is a version in a specific format or an edit, I get something different. Every time he has fixed a problem, he has created a new one.
Now his house was broken into and all of his computers were stolen--I suspect he only has low quality backup files of the project.
We are in a huge rush, because this is supposed to debut at an arts festival in October, and we need to duplicate a few hundred DVDs first...and now the problem:
ALL WE HAVE FROM HIM IS AN MPEG2 of the project. The sound won't play on my Mac, but it plays on my friend's PC, so I have to assume that a pro duplication house won't have a problem with the sound if I send him the file on a thumb drive.
THE PROBLEM WITH THE MPEG2 is that it is jittery when key images slide across the screen. This will look terrible on a 6 x 10' screen at the premiere, plus we do not want to sell DVDs with this unprofessional look.  I asked the editor for an M2V file (requested by the guy who was going to create a menu) and he instead gave me an Mpeg2 that is jittery.
QUESTION: is there such a program that can take an mpeg 2 and eliminate jitter? I do NOT think I can get another file from the editor.
CAN ANY OF YOU DO THE WORK IF I SEND YOU THE FILE? I WILL PAY.
    Thanks.
    Doug

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

  • Array to grid works but need some help. Please help the beginner...

    Hi,
    I'm very green at this...
I've been trying to display a two-dimmensional array on a dataGrid and finally found some code that I was able to modify to my needs.
However couple things I don't understand.
    1. Do I need the <s:itemRenderer>...</s:itemRenderer> section to display the data? Can this be simplified?
I don't need to change the default look of the columns etc. However it looks like the grid will not populate without that prepare() function.
       Why isn't this sufficient to populate the grid? -> dataGrid.dataProvider = new ArrayCollection(dataArray);
    2. The number of columns is hardcoded (3) and their headings are as well (N1, N2, N3).
Can I show/hide columns at runtime based on number of columns in my array?
Can I rename the column's headings at runtime?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • Unable to switch on my phone need some serious help

everyone, i got some issues while switching on my phone. Today my phone has automatically downloaded system update, after completion i installed that update and few minutes after installation, phone restarted and shows this massage "The software update failed. Make sure that your phone is connected to computer and try again."I connected my phone to the computer but still shows the same message and shuts down automatically and im not using any custom recovery.what should i do now??? Please help me with that..

Try performing a system repair using PC Companion as this will often fix issues - This will factory reset your phone and erase all data
Switch off your phone and unplug from Pc (Hold volume up and power for around 10 seconds)
Start PC Companion and select Support zone then Update my phone/tablet then in Blue Repair my phone/tablet and follow the on screen instructions - When prompted connect your phone still switched off holding volume down or back button - This should start the repair or reformat process
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 or a 64bit operating system then adjust the settings for PC Companion and run in compatibility mode and chose Windows 7 or XP

  • The web photo album command needs some improvement

First I'd like to thanks for the
    web
photo album command embed with Dreamweaver. My job requires me
create photo albums with thousands of pictures, it saves a lot of
    time for me.
Now I'd like to ask someone to improve this fuction. I need
to click the thumbnails on the index page to pop-up a window that
show up the detail picture page (If I can key in the pop-up window
size in the command UI will be perfect). Currently this album
generator only links to the large picture's page. I need to make
them to a pop-up window for each manually (thousands of them).
    I tried
    Web
Photo Album 2.2 for Dreamweaver 8 and MX 2004, V2.2.6, it
doesn't have this function either. Compare to the web photo album
command in Dreamweaver, it can't generate filename to caption in
the detail picture page automatically (You can key in captions in
    Fireworks manually though).
If someone can improve the web photo album command to pop-up
window available, I think use "close window" link instead of the
link to the album index page in the detail picture's page will be
    helpful.

  • TS1398 I have tried everything of the above multiple times!!! previously the wi-fi was connecting perfectly in all locations. Now it is Unable to connect to the WI-FI and even if it does is for 2 sec. I need some further help please.

My wifi does not seem to work.
It always appears the "unable to join the network ....." error message, as in the past it worked perfectly fine.
I have tried all the "apple support" options. I have even restored my iphone fully.
Sadly there is no apple store near by.
    Do you suggest anything else!?
    Thanks !!
