Constant Updates and Slow Start

My laptop updates constantly, nearly every time I turn it on, and many times when I try to turn it off. It is extremely frustrating.  It may have to do with Windows 8.  I have never had a laptop/pc that needed to update so frequently.  The most frustrating aspect is that I cannot work on it while it is updating. Any advice is appreciated.

Hi, You have to allow it to get full update otherwise it will update every time you turn your machine on. My suggestion (a) Using Windows update to update few updates at a time, you may have to do few times until no more update, then(b) Turn off auto update and only undate when you want     http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/turn-automatic-updating-on-off#turn-automatic-updating-on-off=windows-8 Regards.

When I click on Firefox the first time it says "Foxfire is installing your updates and will start in a few moments…. (with a green bar)" then it says "Software Update Failed (in blue) with an exclamation mark inside a yellow triangle)
The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again." When I click the ok, Firefox opens up. If I open another Firefox window with the previous one still running, it doesn't give me any of these messages, it just opens normally.

If you can't install on top of the current installation then you need to delete or rename the current Firefox program folder to do a clean install.
It is possible that your security software is using or locking files, so you can try to temporarily disable that software during the installation.

  • I am having all kinds of trouble with itunes and updating my ipad. when I open up itunes, it seems to just sit there, never going to itunes store. when I connect my ipad, I check update and it starts, but then I get this message:backup can't be saved on

I am having all kinds of trouble with itunes and updating my ipad. I open itunes up but it doesn't do anything except open to a blank screen. I try to access the itunes store but it won't go there. When I connect my ipad, and try to update it, it starts and then I get a message that says backup cannot be saved on this computer. I have tried everything suggested to no avail. This is the 2nd or 3rd time I have had problems with itunes. Sometimes I even get a message that I am not connected to the internet.
I have uninstalled and re-installed. Any help?

  • Mac Book Pro doesn't boot (twice; after updating) and slow performance before these incidents

    Hi,
Maybe someone can help me resolving a (re) boot issue with my Mac Book Pro. Last few weeks I experienced a tremendous drop in performance (start-up as well as handling and using applications).
Yesterday I downloaded and installed  an app to clean stuff from the mac, such as binaries that aren't used, cache files, etc. It resulted in substantial better performance. Than, I used the updater on this application to update. This morning, the Mac wouldn't boot. After several attempts I used the old DVD with Mac OS X to re-install and boot. That worked.
Following this approach, I received two messages (that HP apps weren't secured or something and therefor disabled). Than I updated the Mac OS X and later this evening it asked me if I wanted to install some (4) other updates as well (don't know what updates these were). So I updated but now I am back at square one: My Mac doesn't boot. I do get the grey starting screen, but now even the 'apple' logo is missing.
Anyone else experiencing these problems and have any clues on how to fix it? By the way, I also tried to alter permissions on all files on the main hard drives (to ensure that I do not always have to sign off on updates and or changes of applications). Would that have caused problems?

You seem to have a lot going on here, so it's hard to know what's wrong. You likely had some underlying problems before doing the Software Update.
Here's a link that might help with the grey screen problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    Which app did you download?
If you can get booted up, check in the System Profiler to see that all of your RAM is recognized--if not, you may need to reseat one or both sticks.
If you can boot from your install disc, run the extended version of the Apple Hardware test to check for hardware problems. Freezing can be caused by a dying hard drive, which can also tend to corrupt software.
While booted from the install disc, navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. You can do this 2 or 3 times even if it says no problems found.
While in Disk Utility, check to see that the SMART status of your hard drive is verified. If not, you will need to replace the drive.
It probably wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS.
Do you have a good, up to date backup? If not, it would be a good idea to make one as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side.
Have you tried a Safe Boot?

  • Upgraded to yosemite and now having password issues and slow start up

I have upgraded my macbook pro to the OS X Yosemite operating system and now encountering start up and password issues.
Previously on start up my system would go to the log on icon within 10 to 15 seconds of pushing the on button. Now there is horizontal loading indicator bar appearing and takes about 30seconds to 1 minute to go away before getting to the log on screen and if I click on my icon the system goes live on screen without having to put in a password which is an obvious security issue.
I have tried adding a password however each time I try to put my old password in it tells me it is the wrong one.
I am operating Yosemite 10.10.2 on a macbook pro with 8gb memory with i7 processor..
The computer was running perfectly ok before this up grade so I had resisted previous prompts to upgrade due to the bad press this system was getting last year. I thought Apple would have had this all sorted by now??
I  would appreciate any help if anyone knows how to resolve these issues.

Install the version of Java they want from here: Java for OS X 2014-001
    See if CS 5.1 launches.
If not reinstall CS5.1 and any updates.

  • What can I do about constant beachballing and slowness?

For the past four months my computer has been painfully slow. It beachballs constantly and for long periods of time, especially in Safari (not sure about other browsers). Sometimes all of the windows I have up go blank and appear to refresh themselves. The CPU usage is high at random intervals even though I don’t have much running. My laptop is running Snow Leopard and is almost 4 years old, so I understand slowing with age, but I feel like something else is wrong.
I still have the OS software but I'd prefer not to lose everything by reinstalling.

Let’s start with gathering some basic info.
(I think the following sequence works on Snow Leopard.  If not it is close and you can futz to find the info.)
Which MacBook do you have?  Please report back the season, year, and model identifier for your Mac.
     > About this Mac
Note the specific version number of the OS.
    More Info…
              Note the season and year.
              Note the amount of RAM.
    System Report… > Model Identifier:
              Note the Model Identifier.
    Storage
Note the total amount and the amount used.
    Post this information back.
I recently rejuvenated a 2009 MacBook from slow to quite fast with a combination of an OS reïnstall and hardware upgrades.  With the RAM upgrade the applications went from a long time to start to staring almost instantly and the boot time improved by 2x with an 8 GB RAM upgrade (~$100) and another 5x with a clean install and an upgrade from a disk to an SSD.  Let’s see how fast your Mac will go with some system maintenance and then you may want to consider RAM and/or disk upgrades.
In general, slowness can also be caused by incompatible 3rd-party software or an unhealthy SSD/disk.  Four months ago did you download any 3rd-party software or plugins?  If so that may lead down the software compatibility route.  Otherwise it may be a disk and/or RAM issue.
Over time one accumulates more 3rd-party plugins that take more memory.  If you have 1 or 2 GB of memory then more RAM can really help.  Your machine “almost four year old” Mac would make it a 2009 model which may hold up to 8 GB of RAM (a ~$100 upgrade).  I can check that when you report back with the specific system info.
You mentioned not wanting to lose your data.  Make sure you have a current backup.  You should always have a current backup anyway and it is particularly important if your Mac having problems.  If you do not have a Time Machine or other backup, create one before you proceed.  You will need an external drive you will dedicated to the backup.
    Time Machine Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
    Most commonly used backup methods:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3045
Nothing in the following instructions should alter your user data but you should always have a backup before making major changes such as OS installs and other changes.
    Hardware:
Check the health of your disk using Disk Utility
Finder > Go > Utilities > Disk Utility
Select the upper left disk icon > Look at the S.M.A.R.T. status.
If it does not say “Verified” then the SSD/disk will need to be replaced.  Definitely backup your system.
Select the volume icon slightly indented to the right usually labeled “Macintosh HD” > Verify Disk
If it finishes with "The Volume XXX appears to be OK.” then the filesystem is healthy.
    See http://pondini.org/OSX/DU6.html for pictorial instructions.
While there > Repair Disk Permissions.
Don’t worry about lots of warnings or error messages from repairing disk permissions.
If Verify Disk reported errors in red and/or did not finish with the green OK message, then repair the system disk.
Boot from the Snow Leopard install disk.
              Insert the disk.
Boot - hold down the C key.
Use Disk Utility to repair the disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5836 steps 3 though 7.
If the repair fails the first time, run it once or twice again.
If the repair succeeds but the system is still slow,  reïnstall OS X.
Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6606
Reïnstalling OSX will not effect your personal data.
However, have a backup, just in case.
Is the system running faster now?
    Software:
    Boot in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
It will boot and shutdown slower than normal.
Does the problem go away in Safe Mode?
If so then there are Login Items that may be causing the problem.
 > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Click on your user name > Login Items
Use “-“ to remove items you do not need.
    Did that resolve the problem?
    Try and SMC Reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Create a new user account and login to it.
Is it faster in this other account?
If it is still slow run http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and post the results.  We are looking for incompatible software such as kernel extensions that may have slowed down the system.

  • Linksys SRW 2048 constant blinking and slow

Hi all. I tried to search but was not very successful with finding my answer but my problem is that all of the ports are constantly blinking fast. Is this normal?
I have the 2048 switch connected to a linksys wrvs440n router on port 48. Even the non connected ports are blinking dimmly. The internet appear slow as well. If I directly connect a PC to the router (bypass switch) the internet speed is greatly increased.
I am not sure what to look for in the webview. Does anyone have any ideas that I can try?
I even get this constant blinking if only one PC and the router is connected.
    THANKS

THanks eepro. The ports that have a pc connected to are blinking constantly which I thought meant a collision was occuring. the other ports are only dimly lit and blinking but I think that just may be the other lights lighting them up from behind the front panel. The problem is even if there is only one pc connected there still seems to be constant blinking on that one port....
The switch just came new from linksys on a warrantee return.
    Thanks

  • Java update and slow IE load

just updated to update 6, per instructions from various sites, i removed previous versions of java, now, my IE takes about 15-20 seconds to load, and whenever i click on a link to open in a new window, it takes that long for the window to open, other sites users are experienceing the same, they all say that once they removed the update, everthing was fine again, my question is how since i removed the older previous version can this be done on my end, everywhere i have been to on the web only downloads the update 6 so i will be right back to where i started.....did or does anyone have this problem as well?

well, since no answers here, this is what i managed to do, and it worked perfectly, i went to the archives section of Sun, and found the JRE 1.0.5_05 (previous release) and saved it to my desktop, then went into add and remove, removed the JRE 1.0.5_06, rebooted, and upon completion of rebooting, i installed the JRE 1.0.5_05 back on to my computer and all is well again, im back to running smoothly again!!!!! i dont know what it is and why it is happening but some out there are experiencing the same problems....google is sparce on hits but they are there if you look hard enough, i imagine as the week goes on, more and more people will start reporting it.

any suggestions to get the phone up and running hard reset has not worked plugged to intunes and not even registering...and y way to get the phone back up to finsh the update..

I actually figured this out by myself. lol
If you hold down shift while pressing the "restore Iphone" button on Itunes it gives you the option to restore from anywhere you want to. So I went into my Itunes folder under AppData and Iphone Software backup and I restored my iphone from a backup. I'm selling my Iphone 4 right now and buying an HTC One or an LG G2.

  • A 205 CD/DVD drive not working, and slow start-up

My A 205 Satellite laptop no longer recognises its CD/DVD drive.  Drive does not work, though it can be heard spinning when a disc is in it, and it does not show in My Computer.  I have been into the registry and removed the upper and lower filters, but the drive is still not reconised.  Can anyone help?  The same laptop also takes much longer to start-up than it used to - the start-up progress bar seems to stick at about 75% for a couple of minutes before proceeding and letting themachine start.  Machine is two years old and is running Windows Vista.  Suggestions appreciated.

    > So far, all I can think is that the drive has had it and needs replacing, but it's not even a year old!
There is no time limit where you can say: ok now it is acceptable if the drive is defective.
If you are sure that ODD is defective contact nearest Toshiba service provider as soon as possible and ask for help.

  • Hanging / Freezing problem and slow start up

    Problems:
    It starts up very slowly
It hang / freeze all the time
More details about the hanging problem:
All the sudden it will stop responding for a couple of minutes, I would do right or left click (via the build in notebook mouse) but nothing would happen. Then after a little while the “Right click” would start responding, but the “left click” would still be hanging, as when you click and hold it (although I am not even clicking on it at that moment). For instance, to clear up what happens:
While I’m on a page using the browser, or using M.S Word, as described earlier it will hang, then if I click the right click it will show the proper list (so at that moment the right click is working), but if I click the left click it won’t respond. And although I take my fingers off the 2 buttons (the built in mouse’s right and left clicks buttons) and just move the mouse (WITHOUT clicking right or left), it will highlight the whole text in the browser or in the Word file and start scrolling up and down. It is exactly as when you click and hold the left click then move the mouse up and down to highlight something, although as I explained above I am not clicking or holding anything, I am just moving the mouse up and down. Plus the left click won’t response / clicks, so if I want to close the browser by left click on the (X) at the corner it won’t click it.
I then press (alt + ctrl + delete), the Task Manager comes up but I can’t end the task because I can’t click left on anything. However, the whole system collapse and all I can do is to wait until the mouse stop hanging and back to response (this takes approximately 15+ minutes every single time it happens).
    Technical support:
The first time I called HP technical support, the technician suggested that my hard drive has to be replaced, I wasn’t satisfied with her conclusion. I called again and I spoke to another HP technician, he instructed me to do both (quick test) on the hard drive and it “passed” showing that it is in a good condition. Then he instructed me to do “intensive test” which takes about 3 hours, after 3 hours the hard drive again “passed” but my Windows was damaged! I couldn’t access Windows 7 no more, and when I start it, it takes me to a black screen and requests the Windows CD.
I’ve got all my data in the notebook so I had to recover it but I had no access to Windows to do that, I called HP support again and the technician told me that she can’t help me! I’ve got to find an IT person who can recover the data for me and all HP can do is to send me the Windows 7 CD so I can reinstall my Windows.
As HP won’t help, I went to an IT person who recovered my data and he managed to reinstall Windows on my notebook. Now while I’m still busy installing programs in order to get back up and running, thinking that the problem is resolved, but the same 2 problems I’ve explained above are back, starting up slowly and hanging.
If any of HP technical support team is reading this PLEASE HELP URGENTLY! Could you please arrange a technician to contact me ASAP in order to really figure out where is the problem (is it the Windows, or the hard drive, or the mouse or maybe something else) and arrange the repair accordingly.  (I’ve purchased from HP the onsite 3 years care pack warranty).
As I explained above I’ve done as the HP technicians instructed me, yet the problems still exist. I use my notebook for business I can’t afford to stay without pc for longer time, installing and reinstalling my Windows and ALL programs and data over and over again is because of this guessing game.

  • Constant freeze and slow performance when wake up

    hi,
my laptop freezes all the time  like when i play music for long time especially when norton performs a background check.
also when i open it and it was on sleep it becomes very slow when i open chrom, or play a movie.
alot of time  sudden stop of the cruser and very slow performance that it can't even opens the my computer.
I always have to restart the windows.

  • Constant disconnects and slow speed

Between 7am and 9pm my internet is just terrible. I lose connection pretty much all day. The longest I'm able to be online is maybe half an hour. It just goes out at random times and stays out until later at night and it will come back.
Also my speed is just all over the place. When downloading stuff it goes from 380 kb/s to 100 kb/s and goes back and forth.
    I have a Westell 327w.
    Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
    Vendor ID Code: 4
    Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
    Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
    DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 640
    Margin (dB) 21.5 10.0
    Line Attenuation (dB) 24.5 13.0
    Transmit Power (dBm) 7.3 11.9
I forgot to mention that 2 technicians came out. The first one came out ran a test and said everything was fine. The second one came out and did a test and went up the street for something. He also said that the connection would go out for a day or two. It has been 2 and a half weeks since.

#1 Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
    a) Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
    b) If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.
