Continuously acquire, analyze, and plot data

Hello all again,
I know that I have already gotten a lot of help on this program from some of you out there, and I hope that this is the final question I have.
I would like to have this program plot the results on a waveform chart while the VI is running, rather than when it finishes. I am sure that there is a simple way to do that, but I am now sure what it is. I have also posted a link to the previous thread in case anyone is interested in what the VI is actually doing.

Use a for loop if there is the same number of samples every time? I don't know what it does once it is done collecting data but there is probably something it returns to show its done. You could just use an equal block and wire it to the stop of the while loop. When DAQ returns a value showing its done it it will stop the while loop.

I am learning state machine technique to develop code for data acquisitoin and logging. I think I have written the correct code for this purpose but I couldn't get the following done:
All warning values(>0) should be displayed on 1d array on front panel. The code is writing only the first value.
All values should be logged using write to spreadsheet pallete and be written on excel sheet. Code is only writing first value.
I wonder what's the mistake. The code I've created is attached, I'd appreciate if anyone correct the code and post in reply.

Why do you convert a scalar to dynamic, then convert to array, then index an element of the array? Why do you convert to dynamic when all you needis a simple "build array" node?
Ok, I included a shift register to store your array. It's only a simple "how to", but not the best solution for all cases. But it should give you a hint...

To read & save data from serial port (write to .csv file), and plot data as waveform

Hi,
I've been stuck with this problem for weeks and really need some help. I've been searching a lot but I can't find a proper solution.
I am trying to use Labview to plot and display some parameters of a data acquisition system for a project.
The data acquisition system is connected to a computer via serial connection through COM 1 port.
The data acquisition system sends a serial stream of data (ASCII string with baud rate 19200), as shown below (from HyperTerminal),

The serial data stream consists of a time stamp (as 1st data), followed by 16 individual channel data, separated by comma "," and each stream ending in return "\n". Each value of the data ranges from 1 to 6 digits (value of -5000 to 15000).
I have no problem reading this values correctly using HyperTerminal, but I have problem to plot and display individual parameters of this serial string in Labview. I want to save the entire data in a “.csv” file corresponding to all the 16 channels with time stamp and plot each individual channel parameter in a graph with time on X-axis.
I am relatively new to Labview hope I can learn a lot from your help.

Now I had modified the program incorporating1D array for gauge display.....but currently I have a new problem. The program is running updating the file, waveform graph and Gauge very slowly. Approximately once in every 15 seconds 16 data streams are getting updated in a bunch with gauge sticking to the last value rather than indicating real time value.

gets updated in a bunch after 15 seconds, rather than in every second. I thought the problem is with while loop but, i realised there is no delay associated with it..... Can u kindly help me in modifing the program so as it can update the waveform, file data and gauge in real time? (I have attached the modified VI file "suitcase new.vi" and the data gathered after executing the same as in "Trail.txt".)

Acquiring and plotting data from USB raw

Hi,
I am new to Labview. I have a 3rd party RFID
device which i intend to acquire the frequency waveform from the device
through using Labview. Since as a beginner, i use the spectrum analyser
in the "example" section to start off with and now has error in getting
the correct Visa USB raw to connect my device. The program intiallly
used Visa instrument as the visa resource name but when i changed the
input to the USB raw input there is a class conflict error that says
"You have connected a refnum of one type to a refnum of another type and
both types are members of some class hierarchy, but there is neither a
simple up cast nor type cast between the two classes."
For the
USB raw setting, i have already configured the device using the
NI-driver wizard to install the USB raw and tested it through the MAX.
So now i believe the problem should be wiring of USB raw to the entire
spectrum analyser example. Attached is the spectrum analyzer example.

The example you posted is based on serial port communication. From your software point view, everything is based on RS232. This is quite common in instrumentation. As RS232 is simple compared to USB. The software driver on your host PC emulate a virtual RS232 port.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

Acquire, display, and write data at 50 samples per second

I have a vi running on a PXI which samples data using two 4220's (all 4 channels) and one 6031 (only 6channels). I am acquiring data at 100 samples per second, but only need to write the data out at 50 samples per second. The data needs to be displayed at a minimum of 10samples per second. The problem is that the VI can not get 50samples per second writen to the file, it writes about 20 to 30samples per second.
I dont know if the issue is displaying the data which is holding up the writing at 50samples per second or if it is something else in the VI. I have moved the writing of the data to the outside of the while loop, but this did not help enough to reach 50samples/sec.
Is it better to change the waveform data types to dynamic waveforms? Would this increase speed of operations?

Galen,
Looking at your vi, I would recommend writing to your file in a different way. The function you are using is actually opening, writing, and then closing the file every time you call it. This greatly increases the amount of resources being used. Take a look at the Cont Acq to Spreadsheet File.vi example and note that the file is only being opened and closed once. The data is being written to the file during execution of the program, and then closed when the app is done running. The example is done in traditional DAQ but you should be able to do something similar with DAQmx. Try this and let me know if it helps.

Continuously run a vi and pass data to it while going through TestStand sequence

I'm very new to TestStand and I feel that what I'm trying to accoplish is very basic, but I can't seem to figure it out.
What I am trying to do in TestStand is
1st step in sequence: Open a .vi (keep it open) and continuously loop through it (transmits a message every 5 seconds)
Continue to the next step in sequence while main .vi is open and running
Each additional step in the sequence passes data to the main .vi (running above) to transmit a new set of data
Any detailed help would be appreciated.

I threw this together in like 10 minutes so it's not the best but it's simple. It updates every 1 second. The key is using the Asynchronous Step type. The other option is to call a sequence in a new thread and call a VI in there. Take note of the usage of the Termination VIs. Those are important when running Asynchronous VIs.

Read from file and plot data against timestamp

Hello,
I know that there are already many posts regarding the question I m about to ask. But, I somehow dont seem to achieve what I want using the suggestions given in the other posts.
My problem is that, I have a file with the first column as a time stamp containing hour, minute, second and millisecond. The second column in a set of pressure values. I want to plot a graph of these pressure values against the timestamp recorded in this .txt file. Whatever I do, the timestamp values seem to skip by a couple of seconds.
How do i do this correctly?
Also, Is it advisable to use the read from file or the read from spreadsheet file vi? Kindly help me out.

Hey, I was having a similar issue the other day. The first problem I had was how to open the file and actually get the timestamp information. Since I'm using LabView 8.0, I had to go into Read Spreadsheet File and create a new vi to open strings (in an array form). That's the Read Spreadsheet File (string) vi below. Then, I had to figure out how to convert the string of a timestamp to something meaningful to me. The Timestamp2.vi is how I did that below. I'm also including a little test file. So, to run Timestamp2.vi, you will have to input the right base path, and have the Read Spreadsheet File (string).vi in the same place as Timestamp2. Hope that helps. I think I'm finally getting this stuff, so let me know if it doesn't work.

How can I do to acquire and save date in the same time and in the same file when I run continual my VI without interruption.

I've attached a VI that I am using to acquire amplitude from Spectrum analyzerse. I tried to connect amplitude ouput to the VI Write Characters To File.vi and Write to Spreadsheet File.vi. Unfortunately when I run continual this VI without interruption, labview ask me many time to enter a new file name to save a new value.
So, How can I do to aquire and save date in the same time and in the same file when I run continual my VI for example during 10 min.

Your VI does work perfectly. Unfortunately this not what I want to do. I've made error in my last comment. I am so sorry for this.
So I explain to you again what I want to do exactly. I want to acquire amplitude along road by my vehicle. I want to use wheel signal coming from vehicle to measure distance along road. Then I acquire 1 amplitude each 60 inches from spectrum analyzer.
I acquire from PC parallel port a coded wheel signal coming from vehicle (each period of the signal corresponds to 12 Inches). Figure attached shows the numeric signal coming from vehicle, and the corresponding values “120” and “88” that I can read from In Port vi.
So I want to acquire 1 time amplitude from spectrum analyser each 5
period of the signal that I am acquiring from parallel port.
So fist I have to find how can I count the number of period from reading the values “120” and “88” that I am acquiring from In Port (I don’t know the way to count a number of period from reading values “120” and “88”).
Here is a new algorithm.
1) i=0 (counter: number of period)
2) I read value from In Port
3) If I acquire a period
i= i+1 (another period)
4) If i is multiple of 5 (If I read 5 period)
acquire 1 time amplitude and write to the same
file this amplitude and the corresponding distance
Distance = 12*i). Remember each period of signal
Corresponds to 12 Inches).i has to take these
values: 5,10,15,20,25,35,40,45,50,55,60............
5) Back to 2 if not stop.

How to acquire and read data before trigger?

Hi, all:
I want to acquire a impluse signal, and the data when the signal begins is very important to me. So, I want to using a digStart trigger to acquire it, but then i'll lose what i want, maybe i can acquire it continuously, and use the trigger to start read the buffer after a delay(in order to wait the signal end), i don't know if there is any ANSI C functions I can use to do it in this way. I am using PCI6220, DAQmx9.02 and ANSI C. If anyone have some info on this please let me know. thinks.

From your application,I suggest that you can use DAQmxCfgDigEdgeRefTrig function; define pretrigger samples fitting for your application.

Regarding your broken, previously authorized computer, here's how that works:
You would authorize your new computer -- maybe you've done that already. Then you will have two computers authorized. Apple allows you to have up to five computers authorized at any time. If you get to five, you can then go to your account details in iTunes and remove all authorizations.
Bear in mind this is not saying you can synch to more tham one library. Razmee209 and gdgmacguy's comments above are correct. But if Apple only allowed you to authorize one computer at a time, then having a broken computer would mean you could no longer use your Apple ID with iTunes.

Data acquisition time not continuous, but starting over and over again

Hi,
My data acquisition time is not continuous but loops over and over
again. Could someone please take a look at my vi to see if you
have any thoughts on how to fix this. Also, I tried to set up my
vi so that I could take the mean of the signal at any time I
choose. However, at the same instance that the data acquistion
time "starts over" again, the mean is calculated (before I trigger it to take the mean)
I have attached my vi and my output file as a text file so that what
I'm trying to say will (hopefully) make a bit more sense.

Thanks for responding to my question. Attached is the vi with added
comments as to what I think I am doing. By DAQ time, I mean the
first column of data that is in the data file that I attached
previously. I am only simulating a signal (at the beginning) so
that I can program in my office. I do, however, have the same
problem as stated above when I change the simulate signal to DAQmx
using my instrument.

Are you currently on ios 4? If so that's where the backup comes in. You'll need to restore your backup once the software is updated.

Read data from XML file and plot graph on Ms Words

I'm using Visual Studio 2010, what I want to do is written in the title.
so far i was able read and plot graph on a Form but i unable to use the same method on Crystal Reporting.
The method plotting in Crystal Reporting is complicated and it require a fix data set or database which is not suitable for my case because every time the number of column and row or data will be different. (this is what i think base on what i found)
is there a way for me to display the output on a ms words?
and what is the method.

Reading a text file and using data to plot a graph

My Code should have a button , when you click that button it should ask you to choose a txt file to open this file from a specific place. The Indicators of the front panel should show me the ID , Name and Date. The data;

the first 3 bits belong to X axis, the next 3 bits belong to Y and the rest 3 belongs to Z axis. I have to convert those values to Decimal system, and plot them in a graph, 10 times a second , which means after converting and plotting 10 values , one second is over.
I would aprriciate it very much if you could help me in this case....

Some questions a teacher might ask:
What's the display setting for the "\n" string diagram constant? Why?
Is it better to read the file one line at a time or all at once?
What would you do to be able to stop the chart display before it runs out of data?
What would be different if we combine the two FOR loops into one?
How would you display the header as a multiline string instead of an array of strings?
Why is the scan format %03x instead of %3x? Would it make a difference?
What is the purpose of the two items of the property node?
What would you need to change to plot the data every 50ms? (change in two places!)
Why is the error output of the property node wired to the first FOR loop? (After all, the error value is not really used anywhere there!)
Instead of the two "array subset" operations, we could do it with one icon. Which one? (two possibilities!)
So... be prepared!

Hi barron,
If you want to see the data update quicker, you can decrease the value in the "Samples to Read" field of your DAQ Assistant. This number controls when data is transferred from the DAQ buffer to the PC. If the sampling frequency remains the same, but this field decreases, it means the buffered data will be returned more quickly.
