Control a Varian Gas Chromatograph with a 10 Base T Ethernet card and LabVIEW?

I would like to control a relatively new Varian Gas Chromatograph using LabVIEW. The instrument is presently controlled by a Star workstation (software on PC, with 10 Base T Ethernet communication card through coaxial cable to BNC connector on instrument). Varian says LabVIEW is not suitable to control the instrument. Is this true?
Greg

I'd suspect that all they're trying to do is sell you their star workstation and software but I have no direct experience with the instrument. VISA has the ability to communicate over TCP/IP and there are the regular TCP/IP functions in LabVIEW. LabVIEW is used all of the time for ethernet instruments. Is there a published spec on remote communication or did they explain with any details why LabVIEW wouldn't work?

  • A20m Trouble with Ethernet Card and the Internet

    I have a A20m Thinkpad that is not connecting to the internet. At first my problem was that I did not have an ethernet card as detailed on this forum post.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Legacy-ThinkPads-A-I-V-300-600/A20m-Network-Controller-Driver/m-p/219725...
    Thus I bought this ethernet card and installed it.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190223756432
    From what I can tell I installed it correctly and then I preceded to install the drivers for this card. The ones located on this page.
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4K4PWT
    It seemed to work well and the controller shows up in hardware devices.
    That went well, but I still cannot connect to the internet. I thought it might be the card itself but after running the 3Com NIC Utilities that came with the drivers it said that there were no problems with the card.
    Also of note I have noticed that there are no lights on the port where the ethernet cable is plugged in. I am not sure if there should be. Any help people could offer would be most appreciated. This Thinkpad is running windows XP.

    Called them up today and basically I got them to pay for shipping this time. They told me they did not have any more new ones of my model and are not willing to ship me a suitable new replacement model after all this trouble and just gonna keep on shipping me refurbished until we find one that works (the heck? ...his quotes). So basically by the time I get my 2nd refurbished replacement (and assume it actually works this time) my computer would been down for over 2 months.
    I am currently saving up for a 9800gt from evga since they are budget priced now (heard they actually have a good customer service and good quality cards) and based on my experience with MSI I can't recommend their products to anyone now sadly.
    Hopefully MSI will send me out a tested a verified to word refurbished card this time.

  • Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

    Can the Gigabit Ethernet LAN Port be used with a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adaptor and then to a Thunderbolt Hard Drive as a back up drive?

    If you use ethernet to connect the two AirPort Extremes together, you'll have Gigabit speeds available at all of the ethernet ports on both routers.
    If you connect the second AirPort Extreme using wireless only and configure the Extreme to "extend a wireless network", then the maximum speeds that the second router can attain will be limited to the capability of the wireless connection. So, if you connect at normal "n" wireless speeds of say 130 Mbps, that will be the maximum speed available at the ethernet ports on the second AirPort Extreme.
    I think you can easily see the difference between Gigabit ethernet, which is 1000 Mbps compared to "n" wireless at 130 Mbps. Even if you can manage to connect at 5 GHz speeds for wireless, the max speed will be in the 300 Mbps range, more than 3 times slower than Gigabit ethernet. Normal "n" speeds will be about 7 times slower than ethernet.
    For streaming high definition video and other demanding sources, you'll need as much bandwidth (speed) as you can get. Ethernet is always the best choice if you can possibly use it. And...there's no wireless interference on an ethernet connection.

  • Has anyone used Ethernet Gateway and LabVIEW, communicating with Ethernet/IP protocol ?

    I have a PLC system (Jokab Safety B20)  together with Ethernet Gateway (also Jokab Safety type E1).
    What I want to do is to communicate with this unit using LabVIEW Ethernet/IP.
    Read a couple of data and write a couple.
    Has anyone anything like this with LabVIEW and Ethernet/IP ?
    I'm completely new to using PLC's, but I have made a minimum PLC application, but can't get communication to work with LabVIEW (+ Ethernet/IP).

    i generally use an OPC server to talk to he PLC and then use Datasocket to talk to the OPC server tags.
    if that gaetway thing is an OPC server then you maybe abel to do data socket R/W via it.
    Otherwise the NI OPC server may support that widget and (at the rate I bill out) is a good deal in the eyes of most of my customers.

  • Install Problems with PC770 2-in-1 PC Card and ExpressCard

    Currently I'm trying to install a PC770 air card in a Dell Latitude E5400 running XP SP3 and having some problems. I have since updated the BIOS and chipset drivers on the E5400 so those are up to date. I will say that this card works fine in another laptop when tested so it appears to be a problem on the laptop.
    I have been able to plug the device into the PCMCIA slot, the solid green light is on. The install runs perfectly (at least it appears that way). Drivers look like they install, and the VZAccess Manager installs without a hitch.
    However, when I open the Access Manager, it will either say "powering on" or "configuring device" down at the bottom under the name PC770 for a second or two...then just drops to "Device not inserted." I can push the detect device button as well, and it does the same thing.
    When I look in Device Manager, I see the modem in there (Novatel Wireless Modem). I can even query the modem in the properties and everything looks okay. What doesn't look okay is that under "Other Devices" it has THREE "Data Interface" listings. When I remove the card, they go away. When I plug it back in, they come back.
    Anybody have any ideas??

    OK... the T500 and dock work fine apart.  Does anyone have any experience/luck with an NVIDIA GEForce 8400 GS?   This is tricky, as the drivers/support seems to be aimed at the Vista or Windows 7 OS crowd.

  • Hi i need to design a notch filter for eliminating ECG hum..i am working with NI ELVIS work station...and LABVIE 8.0

    hi i need to design a notch filter for eliminating ECG hum..i am working with NI ELVIS work station...and LABVIEW 8.0. Unfortunately it needs an addon software "Digital filter design toolkit", which i dont have. Its urgent..can some 1 plzz help me out.

    Hi and Happy Halloween,
    Depending on the license you have for LabVIEW and the toolsets you have installed, you may be able to have a "notch" filter. I would search your pallet for "Bandstop" because a notch is a type of Bandstop filter. Or, you can make a notch out of a high-pass and a low-pass or you can use the filter express VI. If these VIs are not on your pallet than you probably only have the LabVIEW Base and thus, cannot use these options.

  • Closed loop control of step motors possible with 7344?

    Hi All
    I have been looking around here for a while for an answer to this question.
    For me, a closed loop control system is correcting for following errors all the time, also when the move is complete.
    If the load on a system changes, there will often be a need for compensation in order to keep the position right. Then you need a closed loop control system.
    I have made a system using DC motors with a 7342 controller. We are in the process og getting a new similar system, where the manufacturer chosed stepmotors in the believe that it can be used in closed loop.
    Is it really true that the NI version of closed loop is only performing a what you call a "pull-in" at the end of the move in order to correct for lost steps or flexibility of the connection between motor and object/encoder?
    I would call this "backlash compensation" or something like that.
    Why dont you make a real closed loop option. The control voltage from your servo motor control, could be fed into a voltage-frequency converter with a matchin sign signal.
    This shouldn't be too complicated to accomplish.
    /b

    You are right. NI motion control boards don't apply a control algorithm
    during moves when configured in closed loop stepper mode. In this mode
    the board monitors the following error during the move and generates an
    error when the following error limit is exceeded and they start the
    pull-in moves at the end of the move if necessary.
    If you really want to do PID control with stepper motors you still
    could connect an external V/f converter to the DAC outputs of the board
    and control the axes like DC motor axes. Some vendors implement this
    feature on their board but NI has decided not to do that as we don't
    think that this approach provides a good solution. Here are some reasons:
    The most important issue is the fact that you could easily exceed
    the maximum rate of change of the motor frequency in the case that the
    following error increases during the move. For a DC motor this would mean that the
    voltage of the controller increases to compensate for this error and
    the motor will follow - probably with some delay, but it will follow. For
    the stepper this could mean that the acceleration becomes so high
    that the motor stops immediately as it can't follow with a delay like a DC motor. What
    should the controller do then? Restart the move automatically? Generate
    an error? There is a big chance that you end up with a system moving in a stop and go mode.
    The second issue is related to the control algorithm itself. The transfer function of a stepper motor is not really linear so it will be quite hard to find good tuning parameters. A DC motor can be tuned by analyzing the step response and the Bode plot. For the reasons that I have described in 1.) this won't work for a stepper so how should you tune it?
    I have talked to some  motion control engineers who have tried to control steppers with a PID algorithm and they all agree that this is a real pain and it's not recommended.
    So if your system requirements involve online following error compensation I strongly recommend using a DC motor.
    Best regards,

    How can I control my my mac mini with my macbook air (no wifi)? Also...what is the best method (less lag) for screen sharing?
    I own a mac mini Quad Server 2.0 i7 and I use it for audio production.  It's great but I need to travel with it. I was hoping some form of screen sharing could be useful using the macbook air to control the mac mini.  Therefore, I'd be using the stronger processor of the mac mini but would still be using the keyboard and trackpad from the air.

  • Installing EM Grid Control 10.2.0.3 with Database 10.2.0.3 On RHEL4 U3 & U4

    Note: This is not an official document, it discusses Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control (EMGC) installation on Redhat Linux Update 3 & Update 4 with new database NOT with an existing database. Both OS Updates were installed with FULL PACKAGE INSTALLATION option. Oracle Universal Installer creates the database automatically before creating the EMGC repository.
    •     For Linux the base version of the EMGC is 10.2.0.1 and for Windows platform it is 10.2.0.2.
    •     The database release is 10.1.0.4 with EMGC 10.2.0.1.
    •     When installed it creates three Oracle Homes: 1) db10g (database), 2) oms10g (Oracle Management Service), and 3) agent10g.
    Course of Action:
    To get to Oracle EMGC 10.2.0.3:
    •     Install EMGC 10.2.0.1
     Upgrade Oracle Home oms10g to 10.2.0.3.
     Upgrade Oracle Home agent10g to 10.2.0.3.
    To get to Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.3:
    •     Oracle Database 10g 10.1.0.4 will get installed by the OUI automatically
     Upgrade Oracle Database 10g to 10.2.0.1 in new Oracle DB Home.
     Upgrade new Oracle DB Home to 10.2.0.3.
    ====================================
    Installing EM Grid Control 10.2.0.1:
    ====================================
    To install EMGC 10.2.0.1 download all the three files: Linux_Grid_Control_full_102010_disk1.zip, Linux_Grid_Control_full_102010_disk2.zip, Linux_Grid_Control_full_102010_disk3.zip from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/linuxsoft.html.
    If you have unzipped all the downloaded zip files in separate directories then the very first error message slammed at your face after starting the installation will be something like “OUI-10133: Invalid Staging Area. There Area No Top Level Components”. All you have to do is to unzip all the three files in the single directory (Metalink 395030.1).
    After unzipping all the files in the same directory follow the steps that are given on the follow URL.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gemgc_10202/install/install.htm
    BUT the problem is that you will be punched with few other error messages during the installation that will terminate the installation. The WORKAROUND is given below.
    There are three stages of the installation by OUI:
    1.     Installation of EM Repository Database 10.2.0.1.
    2.     Installation of EM Grid Console 10.2.0.1.
    3.     Installation of Agent 10.2.0.1.
    The first stage completes without any problem and on the OUI you will see: Oracle Enterprise Manager Repository Database 10.2.0.1.0 installed. While installing the Grid Console, during copying files for "Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.2.0.2" at 90% OUI will pop up an error message "An error occurred during runtime." You will see lines similar to the following lines in the installation log files.

    Problem:
    There is a bug which is still being worked on by the DEV : Bug 5203165 : Abstract: CANNOT EXECUTE ../oms10g/bin/OracleAs_Relink_Patch.sh AT INSTALL
    Note that this is an unpublished bug, not viewable via Metalink. The bug apparently occurs only on RHEL4 (32bit) Update 2 and Update 3 (I faced the same thing in Update 4 as well).
    Workaround:
    •     Leave the error message as it is and change the execution permission of the script OracleAS_Relink_Patch.sh.
    $ chmod +x /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/oms10g/bin/OracleAS_Relink_Patch.sh
    •     Now press Retry on the error message pop up window. The installation will resume.
    On the same stage while linking at 90% one another error message will pop up “Error in invoking target 'install' of makefile '/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/oms10g/sqlplus/lib/ins_sqlplus.mk'”.
    Problem:
    Hitting bug : 5203194 :Abstract: RELINK FAILS ON 10.2 GC INSTALL -LIBCLNTSH.SO: UNDEFINED REFERENCE TO NNFGTABLE
    Bug is not published in Metalink. As per the description: Installing 10.2.0.2 Grid Control on RHEL4 Update 2 or Update 3 (I faced the same thing in Update 4 as well). This generates an error in the linking phase. The error is generated while attempting to relink sqlplus.
    Workaround:
    •     Stop installation of all components.
    •     Restart the installation and pick the option to resume the installation.
    •     This allows the installation to complete.
    If by any chance you press continue instead of stopping the installation you should get ready for the garbage OUI is going to throw at you:
    Error in invoking target 'install' of makefile '/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/oms10g/network/lib/ins_net_client.mk'

    Upgrading EM Grid Control 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3:
    ====================================
    I hope after installing EMGC 10.2.0.1 you are still intending to upgrade it..... :-D Now for that download GridControl_10.2.0.3_Linux.zip from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/linuxsoft.html and follow the README.txt file included with the upgrade patch. Before starting the upgrade you will probably have to apply a patch (4329444) on the existing database (10.1.0.4). Anyway, its one of the prereq that you have to complete.
    For upgrade follow the steps given on the following URL.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/obe10gemgc_10203/patching/patching.htm
    •     Keep one thing in mind that you will have to apply the above mentioned patch twice. Once for oms10g home and once for agent10g home.
    •     Stop all the EMGC related services.
    •     When applying the patch to a particular home change the ORACLE_HOME to that home. E.g. when applying the patch on the oms10g home:
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/10.2.0/oms10g
    and for agent10g home:
    ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/product/10.2.0/agent10g
    ====================================
    Upgrading Database from 10.1.0.4 to 10.2.0.1:
    ====================================
    Download the file 10201_database_linux32.zip from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle10g/htdocs/10201linuxsoft.html.
    •     Shutdown all the EMGC related services, the listener, and the database.
    •     Start the installation of 10.2.0.1.
    •     Since 10.2.0.1 is a base release that is why you cannot install it in the existing Oracle Home i.e. in db10g. You have to define a separate Oracle Home for the new installation say db10gR2.
    •     During the installation it will ask you to upgrade the existing database 10.1.0.4 to 10.2.0.1, click YES.
    •     Hopefully the installation will go just fine.
    ====================================
    Upgrading Database from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3:
    ====================================
    Download the file p5337014_10203_LINUX.zip from http://metalink.oracle.com.
    •     Shutdown all the EMGC related services, the listener, and the database.
    •     Start the installation of 10.2.0.3.
    •     During installation it will ask for the Oracle Home, give the new Oracle Database Home i.e. db10gR2 and proceed.
    •     Hopefully the installation will go just fine.
    •     Start the database, listener, and all the EM GC related services:
    o     $ORACLE_HOME/../oms10g/bin/emctl start em
    o     $ORACLE_HOME/../agent10g/bin/emctl start agent
    o     $ORACLE_HOME/../oms10g/opmn/bin/opmnctl startall
    •     Try accessing the EMGC through the browser http://xyz.abc.com:4889/em
    •     You will see two Oracle databases in the EMGC, the old one, 10.1.0.4 and the new one 10.2.0.3. Don’t worry it will not bother you at all. It will only occupy a GB or so. Though, you can remove it through OUI.
    Congratulations!!!! you have now Enterprise Manager Grid Control 10.2.0.3 with Database 10.2.0.3 on RHEL 4 Update 3.
    You can repeat the same exercise for RHEL4 Update 4 as well, but during pre-installation checks you will get 1 warning that:
    Checking for compat-libstdc++-296-2.96-132.7.2; found Not found. Failed <<<<
    Checking for libstdc++devel-3.4.3-22.1; found Not found. Failed <<<<
    Checking for openmotif-21-2.1.30-11; found openmotif-2.2.3-10.RHEL4.5. Failed <<<<
    Actually, these packages are already there in the OS but the higher versions. It is evident from the above messages that first it “founds” the package but due to the version conflict it says that “Not found”. All you have to do is click on the check box next to warning, it will change to User Verified or something. Now press Next and follow the same steps that we followed for Update 3.

    The quicker way is to use sofware only method to install 10204 oms and dirctly use 10203 datbase directly as a oms repository.

    I am using the front panel as the user interface for the machine, so the user can specify three different processes, so I'm using an event structure to call each process. An example of the steps in the process are as follows:
    1. Open relay #1 (solenoid valve)
    2. Open relay #4 (heater)
    3. Wait 30 seconds (while relays #1 and #4 are still open)
    4. Close relay #4
    5. Close relay #1
    6. Open relay #2 (solenoid valve)
    7. Wait 5 seconds (while relay #2 is still open)
    8. Close relay #2
    I am trying to use a framed sequence structure within the event cases, with the DAQ Assistant saying which lines are sinks and which are also outputting +5V (no delta, keeps relays closed), but I don't think this is working and will bog down the system if it did. I think inverting the lines will make it so the lines nominally output the +5V so I just need to send it a sink when I want to close the relays, and make sure it keeps doing that while it waits so the process can be completed.
    What is the best way to do this? I've used Labview before, but I'm hardly a pro, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    As nijams mentioned a state machine architecture is a good place to start.  In case you are unfamiliar in how to implement this in LabVIEW there is a blank state machine template available in LabVIEW.  When you create a new VI select From Template->Frameworks->state machine.  In addition I've included a link to a simple example posted on our NI Community.

    Control-Hints are suppose work with UIX/XML, right?
    I've added some control hints and they worked correctly when viewed using UIX/JSP pages. However, none of the Control-Hints appear on UIX/XML pages.
    The documentation suggests that this should work. Am I wrong?
    Bill G...

    There's a bit of confusion here (which is entirely our fault).
    UIX JSP is a subset of UIX XML (almost entirely; a few tags in
    UIX JSP simply wouldn't make sense in UIX XML, like <uix:buildTree>).
    However, BC4J UIX JSP is not a subset of BC4J UIX XML; the two
    are essentially entirely different libraries. (Any JSP tag that
    starts with <bc4juix:> counts as a "BC4J UIX JSP" tag.) I agree
    that this is confusing.
    As far as control hints go: BC4J UIX XML does not currently
    support control hints. It does offer more than enough flexibility
    to tweak all the dials and knobs made available by control hints (and
    a lot more).
