Controling the Authoring Experience

We use DITA and Structured FrameMaker. We have a lot of casual authors who don't know DITA and rarely use it. We want to make the authoring experience less confusing for them. All the element and attirbute choices overwhelm them and there are no tooltips that explain each DITA element. Is there a way to customize the Structured Application so that casual DITA authors can write with less awareness of the DITA tags? We were thinking of something form-like. I was hoping that someone out there had approached this problem. Thanks for your ideas.
Paula

Hi Paula...
You can definitely trim down the elements and attributes that are exposed to your writers. You can't really make it into a true "form", but you can do alot to make it simpler for the casual author. This is one of the nice things about Frame .. you can modify the elements and attributes exposed to the writers without messing with the underlying DITA DTD files.
This is done by modifying the EDD that is included in the structure application's template file. You should start by "cloning" the default Topic structure application to make a DITA-Topic-Light (or whatever name you choose) app. You should not jump in and modify the default app. You *will* break it (even the most experienced app developers will break these things at some point), and you'll want to be able to compare your app to the default app.
I have some instructions for cloning structure apps. This is intended for use with DITA-FMx, but the general idea can be used for other apps as well.
    http://docs.leximation.com/dita-fmx/1.1/?ditafmx_cloningtapps.html
Once you've created a new structure application, you can start modifying the EDD. This is something that will take some time. You'll need to be very familiar with EDD syntax. The Structure Application Developer's Guide is your friend. Download it from here ..
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/framemaker/onlinemanuals.html
EDD development is an iterative process. You make some tweaks, then test, then make more tweaks .. and so on. Plan on spending a fair amount of time, especially if this is all new to you.
When you modify the EDD, you can import it into an open document for testing. Just use the File > Import > Element Definitions command. When you're ready to actually include this in your application, you need to open the template file, and import the EDD into that.
If this is all a bit overwhelming, you might want to read the topic "Developing Custom Structure Applications" in the DITA-FMx help .. it gives an overview of the files and how they are related.
A side note .. DITA-FMx provides a feature that lets the writer select an element and press ALT+F1 .. this opens the official DITA Reference documentation on the topic that explains that element. From there you can see the possible parent elements as well as child elements. It also explains the attributes and what they are used for. (DITA-FMx also provides lots more features and enhancements for using DITA in Frame, see the feature comparison .. http://leximation.com/dita-fmx/featurecomparison.php)
If you don't want to use DITA-FMx but want to get this ALT+F1 functionality .. I have a free plugin called MyHelp that does this ..
    http://leximation.com/tools/info/myhelp.php
Anyway .. this is probably enough info for now.
Cheers,
...scott

  • CONTROLLING THE VIEWING EXPERIENCE IN ACROBAT

CONTROLLING THE VIEWING EXPERIENCE IN ACROBAT
This is a major bug (going back to at lease Acrobat 5) and just one of many related to the “Document Properties > Initial View” setting, which seem to be a “special project” for the Adobe Acrobat tech-team. I say “special” in the sense that the goal appears to be … How can they address these issues in each successive version to actually make them LESS FUNCTIONAL and LESS INTUITIVE?
    Default = Sucks!
I run a successful graphic design firm and have invested well over $1000,000 in various Adobe products. When we send our work to clients (via PDF) for review, EVERY aspect – window size, window placement, format and flow of pages, page layout, navigation options, page magnification, document page numbers, document titles and file names, etc., etc. etc. – are absolutely critical. The “default” settings for Acrobat address virtually none of these issues and Adobe seems not to care at all! 99.9% of all the Acrobat documents that I receive are completely unformatted and must be reset before they can be navigated or reviewed.
Navigation Tab > Pages Panel and Page = Does Not Work!
However, perhaps most critical is that the recipient realizes that the document contains multiple pages, vs. a single page. The failure of the “Navigation Tab > Pages Panel and Page” setting to function in any logical and consistent (read – where is the default setting for this?) manner has been and is a fatal flaw in Adobe Acrobat. We have dealt with this (“Where is the rest of the document?”) literally hundreds of times and while it is a big headache for our staff, what worries me more are the recipients that never even bother to ask.
Thumbnail Size = Does Not Work!
I too have found no way to set the default size of the thumbnails. To add insult to injury, after you do enlarge them manually (2-3 steps) and enlarge the Pages Panel pane to accommodate the slightly larger thumbnails, guess what happens? When you reopen the document, Acrobat reverts to the original (tiny) thumbnails, but retains the enlarged (now useless) Pages Panel pane, while equally reducing the actual content in the Page pane. This is massively stupid!
Page Layout for Viewing and Printing = Does Not Work!
Another pet peeve is the “Page Layout” settings. When we design a multi-page document and convert it to PDF for review, it is imperative that the “flow” of the document – i.e. single page cover, followed by two-page spreads – be replicated as closely as possible. And while this on-screen experience is important, of nearly equal importance is the ability of the recipient to print each individual page of our design, as an individual 8.5 x 11 page. Again, finding a way to accomplish this in a logical and consistent manner is virtually impossible.
    Printing = Why So Slow?
Speaking of printing ... Why does it usually take “forever” to print (even small) PDF files on a laser printer?
Controlling the Viewing Experience = Does Not Work!
In short, we usually have no idea exactly what our clients are seeing because Adobe provides no default settings that can be set globally and “locked” so that one has a bit of control over the viewing presentation experienced by the recipient. On the other had, Adobe does provide a mindless blizzard of security options which probably serve about 1% of their customers.
Sorry for the rant, but if anyone has any ideas, I love to hear them. Thank you very much!

It's evident you're annoyed, but I don't agree at all with your claims. If you use Acrobat as intended, you can control the initial view settings however you want - but this is a document-specific feature and intentionally so. If people are sending you files with the "wrong" initial view, that's their problem not Adobe's.
Navigation Tab > Pages Panel and Page = Does Not Work!
Of course it does. The menu item or hotkey sets the view mode temporarily, and to make that mode the default for a particular file, you simply set the initial view (file menu / properties / initial view) and save it. Whatever you choose for the layout, zoom and panel displays will be shown to anyone opening the file in future.
Thumbnail Size = Does Not Work!
The thumbnails embedded into a PDF file are at a single size. Enlarging them via the context menu on the Navigation Panel is temporary, but the width of the Panel is retained for a session (it is not permanent).
Page Layout for Viewing and Printing = Does Not Work!
What do you mean by "does not work"? The screen layout has no relationship whatsoever to the printouts, so provided your files are genuine pages and not spreads, you can set your two-up views (with or without covers) as part of the document properties / initial view settings, but the PDF will print as a series of single pages as it should.
    Printing = Why So Slow?
Printing a PDF file takes no longer than any other type of file with the same content (and hence the same data to transfer). If you are experiencing very slow printing then it's a problem with your system setup.
Controlling the Viewing Experience = Does Not Work!
See my response above about the document preferences / initial view tab.
Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader have been developed over many years, based on very extensive user feedback and monitoring. The features we have today are there because they DO satisfy the vast majority of target users, and if they didn't, these forums would be deluged with complaints - there are after all hundreds of millions of users out there, so even if 1% were unhappy you'd be reading millions of posts a week.

  • Lost Beats Audio Control Panel, Windows Experience Index and HP Power Manager on fresh install...

    HP Pavilion m6-1035dx, product B5S06UA#ABA
Please help! I installed a 240gb SanDisk Extreme SSD and a fresh install of Win 7 home premium 64-bit OEM. I did not reinstall the factory OS and all that goes along with it. I have managed to reinstall all drivers (it seems) but am having the following problems: 1) I have installed IDT HD Audio Driver sp56953 but it does not provide the Beats Audio control panel, any idea how to get it? 2) The Windows Experience Index will not provide a performance evaluation, something in the system is providing it with an error message when it attempts to rate the system and it stops. 3) I have installed HP Power Manager sp57398 and can bring up the control panel but the changes I indicate will not stay applied, when I bring up Power Manager again it show that no selections are made. I knew this fresh install was going to provide headaches, please help if you can. Thanks.

I suspect this may all be related to a common cause.
When updating the windows experience index, what is the error message you receive?
Has the video card driver been installed? It is necessary for the windows experience index to complete.
Also, ensure the HP Software Framework is installed.  It is under the Software Solutions category.
You did a clean install of Windows 7. Has all the software and drivers for Windows 7 from HP been installed? Here is a link should you need it.

  • How can I control the window size of my output?

    Hi,
I'm drawing a blank... How do I control the size of the window that my project is viewed in? Right now, it's the entire browser window.
    Thanks,
    Janice

    Hi,
From your post, I assume you are creating WebHelp output.
You  need to create a window for the help in the Project Set-up pod. Then,  you need to make sure you call the output so that the window is used.  See http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/calling_webhelp/calling_webhelp.htm.  This article on Peter's site give you an overview over the  possibilities of calling context sensitivive webhelp and also tells you  how to specify the needed window. Also, the installation directory of  RoboHelp 8 contains a directory called CSH API. In there are example  API's your developer can use to call the help.

  • Control the scrolling speed while browsing a PDF file from a URL in Safari

When I open a URL pointing to a PDF file from Safari, the PDF file is opened by the AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin.  Too many times the multi-page PDFs scroll too fast up and down uncontrollably from the touch Pad.
Is there a way to control the scrolling speed and make my reading experience better?

You need to remove both, while Safari is closed.
You can use the Trash - Put Back command to replace them right away (again, close Safari first) or drag them from the trash to some spare folder, in case you want them later.

  • Controlling the 'Rotate View Tool'

    Hi there,
I'm a Flash/Flex developer working with PatchPanel and SwitchBoard to build AIR apps that can communicate with Creative Suite tools.
I was hoping to write a PatchPanel plug-in that would be able to control the 'Rotate View Tool' in Photoshop CS4 however, when I looked through the DOM there was no mention of it within the JavaScript Reference. My next tactic was to use the ScriptListener plug-in to record the action but alas, the resulting log did not contain the 'amount of rotation' as a variable :-(
Can anyone verify whether it is possible to dynamically control the 'Rotate View Tool'? If so, how would I go about passing the desired rotation value from my PatchPanel plug-in to Photoshop?
I should also say that I do not have access to the Photoshop SDK and have no experience of C++ but am willing to invest some time into solving this problem because I have something REALLY sweet planned. I'll keep it a surprise for now but if I can find a solution then I'd be more than happy to share it freely.
    Many thanks in advance...

    Hi Andy,
It doesn't look like there are public APIs in the SDK. You've also found that what you want is not Actionable, thus no scripting support. Sorry.
Feel free to drop me an email and I can file a feature request.

  • Controlling the agilent 89441A under Labview

I am trying to communicate with our 89441A Vector Signal Analyzer via GPIB under Labview 7.1. I downloaded the intstrument driver (v1.2) from the National Instruments website.
The application example works fine. But this example uses the instrument mode "vector", and I'd like to use the "scalar" mode. When I change the instrument mode,  the returned data is unexpected. The shape of the plot doesn't change, but the X-data (frequency bins) are in the range -7kHz to +43kHz, were I expected 0..+50kHz. The analyzer displays 0..50kHz on the screen, but the plot on the computer is shifted 7kHz to the left!
I have no clue on where to look: Is it a driver bug, an instrument bug, or am I doing something wrong? Please help me out here... Anyone experience with this issue? Does anyone at all have experience with controlling the 89441A?

Yes, I have looked at the programmers manual (I even have a hardcopy ), but unfortunately that didn't bring me any further.
I'm afraid not so many people have a 89441A, but if anyone has one, please let me know is you have any experience with remote controlling.

  • Controlling the display of the help (?) button

Has anyone had any experience with controlling the display and linking of the help button? I have two questions in particular.
First, how do I force a channel to not display the help link (the question mark button)? I have several channels that do not have the helpURL property defined, but the button still shows up?
Second, where are the links/image elements defined for the help/edit/minimize buttons? the leafWrapper.jsp pulls the hashtable out of the HttpRequest, and that hashtable is being used by providerCommands.jsp:
    Hashtable commands = (Hashtable)request.getAttribute("provider_cmds");
Any idea where this is being set?
    Thanks for the help ;-)
    Matt

I've got a very similar situation. I'd like to tie a channel to a particular help file (on the same host that the channel is served by). I log in using the amAdmin account (for some reason I have to put a capital A for the Admin part, but that's another issue), select my Organization, show roles, click on the appropriate role, show Services, click the link after Desktop, click Channel and Container Management, then Edit the URLScraperProvider channel. I've filled in the values for title, description, url, and width. The remaining properties are apparently inherited from the provider, and include urlScraperRulesetID (default_ruleset), fontFace1 (Sans-serif), productName (Sun ONE Portal Server), cookiesToForwardAll (checked), inputEncoding (iso-8859-1), cookiesToForwardList (I haven't changed anything here), and timeout (100).
I don't see helpURL anywhere in the properties associated with my channel, however, there definitely is a help button on the channel, and it goes to some generic Sun ONE documentation on URLScraper channels.
When I attempt to add a string helpURL property (leaving the value blank, or setting the value to "", or point it at the URL the points to my help file), and submit the form, I get an error message indicating "A property with the same name already exists."
So, what am I doing wrong? Is this the right place to be setting the helpURL? If not, where should I do this?

  • How to control the button available in SRM 7.0

    Dear ,expers :
       I work in SRM 7.0 .SP 09
You know ,the purchaser can do the "renew "in contract in the purchaer's view .But in my case ,some purchaser can do this ,but other nerver .So I just want to control the button available though the user role .
      Or other method ?
    BestRegards !
    Alex !

    Hi,
We can achieve this with Meta configuration . You have to  configure  the button in the following path with dynamic customer class  and method and in this method you have to check the authorization for the user for the Auth object .
if user is not authorized you can disable this button.
Like this you can achive the control on the button.
    ->SAP Supplier Relationship Management
         ->SRM Server
            ->Cross-Application Basic Settings
                ->Extensions and Field Control (Personalization)
                   ->Control Actions
->Configure Control Actions at Item level(    Check the button is at header level or item level or sub sructure level
    and  configure accordingly   )

  • The authorized service provider send me home with an exploding machine

I wish the Apple shop over here in Hong Kong opened earlier. I had to deal with the "Authorized" service provider WahFung to try fixing my MBA. Then I was send home with the MBA "repaired" but turned out to have a potential of exploding!
Here is what happened. My MBA had a power failure and needed a board replacement costing me over $400US at this WahFung service provider in Hong Kong. They "fixed" it by showing me that the little light on the MagSafe connecter lights up and rushed me to sign the receipt and send me home. After taking it home, I found that the whole keyboard was lifted up and the MBA doesn't even close properly! So I took it back to WahFung and ask them why. They said the battery has swollen up and you shouldn't turn on the machine as it might explode! I mean WHAT? so you send me home strapped with a bomb? Ok fine, then fix it up. They said no, you signed for it already and it is not our fault! OK, so thanks I paid $400 for you to mess up my machine and put me in risk. The only thing they said they would do is to contact Apple and see if Apple would replace the battery. (Fine I did hear about there is a replacement service for batteries of this problem of the same age machines) Now it has been about 8 weeks, no one is giving me any feedback. I don't even know if they did contact Apple. They still have the machine.
Has anybody had similar problems on the service and/or the battery of the MBA?
Now the Hong Kong Consumer Councel has also contact them and will bring them to court if we cannot settle. That will get me into a lot of time and money commitment having already spent over $400 dollars and hrs of waiting for them to pick up the phone. I have been a long time loyal user of Apple's product since the first Macintosh. Please please don't let these non-Apple people ruin you. If we do lose the court case, there will be media covering the story, I don't want Apple to get involved.
Steve, I wish you were here, what would you have done?

    skyuen9 wrote:

Is the news really that slow in your country that the news would broadcast a story about one persons negative experience with Apple?
Steve, I wish you were here, what would you have done?
Don't ask a rhetorical question towards the recently deceased co-founder of Apple, it is insensitive.  Tim Cook is the new CEO, he replaced Steve Jobs before his passing.  Feel free to mention his name from now on.
With that said, I hope you recieve a favorable outcome.

  • Where do I define the author for a topic?

Need to know how to set or define who the "author" is for the
project and or topics. Anyone? I'm fairly new to Robohelp and have
not been find the place to do this. Thanks in advance for any help
    you can provide!

    Hi again Tracy at Cheval
In your situation, I might suggest you would benefit from
what I refer to as "poor man's version control". I'll outline
    below:
Using careful coordination, two or three help authors can
easily achieve sharing a single RoboHelp project without resorting
to any type of a third party Source Control system. The key to this
approach is strict adherence to communication policies!
Source Control works like a combined traffic cop/librarian.
It is an automated way to allow collaboration between two or more
help authors. Here is a hypothetical situation. Three different
help authors have a need to "share" authoring responsibilities.
I'll refer to them as Mary, Bob and Mike. All three wish to update
and maintain a single RoboHelp project. There are a few different
ways that this can be done.
    1. A Source Control system may be acquired and implemented.
This could be cost prohibitive and require setup, configuration and
    ongoing maintenance that is undesired.
    2. Mary, Bob and Mike may carefully communicate and
    essentially "share" a single project.
    3. The project may be carefully split into three different
projects and each of the authors becomes "captain of their own
ship" so to speak. Each author is totally responsible for
    maintaining their own project.
In case number 1, a version control system is purchased and
implemented. In this case, once it has been installed, each user is
configured with a login name and password so that each is uniquely
identified. Then one or more projects are added to the version
control system. So let's say Mary checks out Topic1.htm to make an
edit. Then Mike comes along and wants access to the same topic. The
source control system says nope! Sorry, but Mary has it checked
out. You can't make changes until she checks it back in! In this
case, the source control system is preventing undesired changes
from being made to the files. The traffic cop part stopped Mike.
The librarian part kept track of the fact that Mary had the topic
    checked out.
In case number 2, careful communication is mandatory. So
let's say Mike wants to make some changes. Here is what would need
    to happen:
    1. Mike sends a message to advise Mary and Bob that he will
    be working on the project.
    2. Mike copies the project from its central location to his
    hard drive.
    3. Mike opens the project, makes the changes, generates or
    compiles, then saves the project.
    4. Mike copies the modified version of the project from his
hard drive back to the central location. This replaces the original
    with Mike's modified copy.
    5. Mike then sends an "all clear" message to Mary and Bob,
advising that either of them are now free to make any changes.
    6. Perhaps at this point, Bob needs to make changes. In this
    case, the cycle repeats.
    7. Bob sends a message to Mary and Mike advising he will be
    working on the project.
    8. Bob copies the project from its central location to his
    hard drive.
    9. Bob opens the project, makes the changes, generates or
    compiles, then saves the project.
    10. Bob copies the modified version of the project from his
hard drive back to the central location. This replaces Mike's
modified copy with Bob's modified copy. At this point, because
things were carefully applied, the central location now reflects
modifications made by both Mike as well as Bob.
In case number 3, each author has his/her own project. Each
is captian of his/her own ship! Essentially, each author has their
own copy on their own hard drive. When changes are required, they
simply open the project at any time they like, make changes and
copile or generate as needed. In this case, one person is normally
nominated as the "Master" or head person. This person's project
contains special information that tells it to "look" for the other
projects. This type of setup is known as either the "Parent/Child"
or the "Master/Slave". The end result is that the person viewing
your help system is actually viewing content provided by two or
more separate help systems. But from their perspective, they see
only one. So they are none the wiser.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Is there a way I can control the resolution of the photos I transfer to the iPad?

Is there a way I can control the resolution of the photos I transfer to the New iPad? I just received the new iPad and would like to reduce the size of the resolution of the pictures I am transferring.
I have storage capacity issue and I am only able to transfer about half the number of pictures I had on original Ipad with the same storage capacity. I upgraded to the New Ipad and I am transferring all the pictures I had in the original Ipad. I do not know why they are not all transfering since the New Ipad got full before all the pictutres where transfered. I used Itunes to transfer the pictures I have in Iphoto .  I assume this is because the New Ipad has a higher resolution screen and is allowing the pictures to be transfered automatically to the New Ipad at a higher resolution than the original Ipad?
    Any thoughts?

I have a Canon 7D and the picture are large.
Step my step instructions, would be great if it is at all possible.
What you as is difficult without knowing your exact circumstances, i.e. what format pictures are you sending, do you shoot in .jpg or shoot in RAW and convert to .jpg, etc.  However, I don't see a way to quickly reduce the size of your image files without reprocessing your files in some manner.
You could export all of the images to be loaded onto your iPad in JPEG format using Lightroom or Aperture and greatly lower the quality setting in the .jpg export.  If you do this make sure you export to a new folder. Lowering the quality can have a huge impact on the size of the image files.  If this worked it would give you the advantage of still having the largest amount of pixels allowable on the iPad 3.  I found that on my iPad 2 I could 'get away' with setting the quality to around 50 without seeing any obvious changes.  A higher quality setting may or may not be required on the iPad 3, time will tell and as my iPad 3 is going back I've not taken the time to put more than a few sample (800 or so) images on it.  They were exported at a quality setting of 60 and look as well as can be expected considering my defective iPad 3 display.
If you images are already exported at a lower quality setting and are still too large the next step would be to reduce the dimensions of the image.  Lightroom has this capability.  I don't know about Aperture, but I assume it does.
My normal workflow with my 7D:
    Take picture in RAW.
Transfer to Lightroom 4 converting the Canon RAW files to Adobe's DNG format.
Process images in Lightroom.  If any need further processing then export to Photoshop and/or Nik plug-ins.
Export processed images that I wish to have on my iPad to my Pictures folder in .jpg format using a quality setting of 60.  I do not reduce the dimension of the image as I want the maximum sized images my iPad will allow.  As I only transfer a couple of thousand size is not an issue.
Use iTunes to Sync photos to iPad.
As was mentioned by a previous poster you could use Photoshop to bulk process the photos but that requires both Photoshop and a knowledge of creating a bulk action.  Not hard, but very confusing if you haven't used both Photoshop and the bulk process before.
There may be other methods that could work for you but I am not aware of them.  With the breadth of experience of the members of this forum perhaps someone else could chime in with suggestions.
