Controlling windows style menu with user events

Ok I have a menu and I am trying to have short cut buttons for some of the higher level functions.
How do you use the user events functions to access the same code that the menus use? Do I use te user events? Or is there something else I am supposed to be using?
I need examples as i cant get it to work at all.
All help will be appreciated!!!
I think I might be barking up the wrong tree here.
But fundementals are say i have a save button I also want it to use the same code that is under the save item in the menu! How do I get the button to link to the same code.
Adam

Ok, so you have an event structure that handles menu selections, but now you want buttons to launch the same code, right?
If you can make a sub-VI of the code you want to run in both cases I would do that, and then have the sub-VI in both event cases. If not:
To get a button to fire a menu event is not possible as far as I know, but it would be easy to do it the other way around. Put the code in an event or case triggered by the button or a hidden button that you set to true when the menu selection is done (you could use the same button, but that looks a bit strange; the button would go true without anyone clicking it). If you use an event, set the value of the boolean using the value signaling property instead of a local; that way the event will fire.
A t
hird alternative is to skip the buttons and just add keyboard shortcuts to the menus...but that's not quite the same.

  • LV 7.0 extremly unstable while working with user events during edit time

    hi
i create and register several user events inside an initializing vi and then pass the registered events to the event structure using dynamic events in my top level vi. all works fine untill i do some changes to the registered events, e.g. changing names, datatypes or add/remove some events. when doing so my LV 7.0 chrases after opening the top level vi (exception error, no *.cpp errors). all changes i made are going to nowhere. i understand that after the changes i made the registered events in my init.vi-indicator dosn't match the events in my event structure, but i can't understand that LV chrashes.
    here are my questions:
    1. is it a known problem to LV 7.0?
    2. should i reinstall LV 7.0
(i have LV 6.x and 7.0 on my machine)?
    3. is there a fix?
    thanks in advance

    Hello Chris,
I have been looking into your problem and have come across one possible known bug in LV 6.1 that may be showing itself in 7.0. If modifications are made to the typedef of a registered event the vi will crash. I was hoping that you could post a small piece of your code and instructions on how to reproduce the crash. This way I can see if this is the same bug, a programming error, or an installation error. I can then determine if there is still a bug that needs to be looked into by our research team.

I'm trying to trigger my event structure with an user event when my signal reaches a certain value.
the ultimate goal will be to send a message trough queue to my consumer. for now I'm just trying to prove functionality.
currently the event is always triggered once it's set of once and it wont stop.
Here is what it looks like.

i think a boolean crossing pt by pt with direction set to false-true, that will take care if your value swings in and out of your ranges
as mentioned, put the event structure in it's own loop....no point in having a timeout with an empty case

  • Creating a "ribbon" style menu with Muse?

Is it possible to do a scrolling thumbnail "ribbon" in Muse? I'm trying to achieve the effect of having a small window that has several thumbnails in it that the user can scroll through to change the target. If not, how do we get that as a requested feature for Muse? It would be insanely useful, and I know a lot of other users would want to use something similar.

    Hi Julia,
I understand that I can tooltip over them, but what I'm looking for is something that will allow me to do something like this example on the main page for Lionsgate.com. The functionality I want is to be able to present the player with a menu of thumbnail buttons which will change a main display, very much like what you illustrated above. What is different, however, is that I want the user to be able to SCROLL a list of thumbnails which are contained within a menu window. In this way, if I wanted to have links to twenty or fifty or a hundred buttons/thumbnails, I can present the player with only a few at a time without completely cluttering the interface. They can use arrow keys to scroll up or down through the available thumbnails. It's a very common interface, and Apple uses the ribbon idea as part of their main interface.
Long story short, is it possible to replicate this with existing Muse widgets, or does someone know of a not-too crazy way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Neal

  • How to control windows XP machine with ARD (by using a VNC Client on the PC

    How do I do this?
    thanks

Thanks, I found my problem to be the VNC client I was using on the PC's. I was using TightVNC and while it worked for Chicken, it did not work for ARD. Once I installed RealVNC and configured it everything worked beautifully.

  • Menu Selection (App) catches Menu Selection (User)

In 2010 I would use the same case in an event structure to handle both Menu Selection (App) and Menu Selection (User) events.
I've recently upgraded to 2012 and started seeing duplicates of my User menu events. I separated the Menu Selection (App) and Menu Selection (User) events into separate cases. I still see duplicates. The event is being caught in both the Menu Selection (App) and Menu Selection (User) cases. (App) menu items are only caught in the Menu Selection (App) case. If I use Menu Selection? (App) I don't see the duplicate events.
I don't like that solution as I would like to only have one case in the event structure to handle all menu events. Is there a fix short of upgrading to a new version?
    Thanks,
    Jason

    Jason,
What you have found is a known bug in LabVIEW 2012.  I was able to recreate your issue and tried to find a workaround for what you were doing, but aside from simply building in logic to reject the menu selection event if it occurrs too close to the previous event, what you have found is probably the simplest solution.
If this is a reason you choose to upgrade to a newer version you have not yet installed I will give you a friendly warning that this bug still exists in LabVIEW 2013 SP1 but seems to be fixed as of 2014.

  • How to programmatically signaling Menu selection (User)

I have an event case handling Menu selection(User) event. Now I wish to programmatically signaling the Menu selection (User). Is that possible in LV?
    WT
    LV2013SP1

Well then you could have a state machine, where you go to the "Menu Selected" state when the event is generated.  Or you can choose to go to that state in your application whenever you want.  Now you don't have code duplication and have once case that handles doing the work, and you can get there from multiple methods.

  • Producer Consumer & User Events with user input windows

    Hello All,
I am planning to build Labview code using the Producer Consumer & User events pattern, the application needs multiple user input windows for things like personal data, feature selection etc, there could be around 15 or 20 distincts screen/panels required.
The main question from me is... Is there a best practive approach to navigating/loading from one window to another etc, and also providing a way to to retrun to the previous window.
Also I may need need to be running some slow logging and control hardware in the background while navigating some of the screens, this seems like the producer consumer vi will be running in the background while the user input causes a load/display window event.
A simple Producer Consumer multiple winjdoow example would be very welcome. Thanks.
    Regards Chris

I will second Mike's suggestion to use a central VI with subpanel(s).  It is usually less confusing than multiple windows.  Typically, the selection/navigation mechanism is on the left of the main panel, global info (like help) on the right, and the subpanel(s) in the center.
The advantage of subpanels/subVIs is that you can launch your subVIs and keep them active in the background, even though they are not being used.  This means they will keep their state information and load into the subpanel almost instantaneously the next time you need them.  For a short tutorial on subpanels, check out this link.  Scroll down to the fourth reply for working code.  The original code posted is broken.
Communication between your VIs or loops is typically done with either queues or event structures.  State information in each should be shift registers in the respective VIs.  If you have the time, I would highly recommend you learn how to use LabVIEW classes.  The command pattern is tailor made for this kind of application.
Finally, avoid global data if you can.  Global data is anything that you can get to from anywhere (globals, functional globals, etc.).  Use of these can speed your development, but can also lead to sloppy design which will cause you major problems later.  If you really need globally available data, use a data value reference.  It is unnamed and requires a reference, which tends to enforce better programming practice.  Yes, there are instances where you truly need globally available, named data, but they are fairly rare.  You should only use them if you are experienced and really know what you are doing.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 installed?
How far into the opening of the program do you get? Do you get to the Expert or Quick workspaces?
And, if so, how long can you stay there? What are you doing when you get this message, opening a new project
or opening an existing one that has been saved/closed or just trying to launch the program from the desktop icon.
Are you running the program Run As Administrator and from a User Account with Administrative Privileges?
Do you have the McAfee antivirus program? Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer
    with Premiere Elements 12?
What video card/graphics card does your computer use? Have you verified at the web site of the manufacturer of the
card that the video card/graphics card driver is up to date?
If you do not know, check the Device Manager/Display
Adapters to determine if you have 1 or 2 cards.
Depending on your answers, the next step will be
Uninstall the program the usual Control Panel way.
(If you can get into the program long enough to go to Help Menu/Sign Out, please do that to deactivate the program
before going to the uninstall in Control Panel area.)
Do a run through with ccleaner (both the regular cleaner and registry cleaner parts) to get rid of leftovers from
    incomplete uninstalls and reinstalls.
    https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Reinstall the program with the antivirus and firewalls disabled.
(If you have McAfee as the antivirus, that may be problem, and we can take care of that without having to go
    through this uninstall/ccleaner/reinstall.)

The EventSystem sub system is suppressing duplicate event log entries for a duration of 86400 seconds. The suppression timeout can be controlled by a REG_DWORD value named SuppressDuplicateDuration under the following registry key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\EventLog.

    hi do the following
    1. In Search programs and files (Windows 7) area, type in regedit, and press Enter.
    2. If prompted click yes,
    3.  expand the following HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
    4. click the sid that related to your admin profile (if you not sure, click each sid and in turn look to the right hand side of registry editor it will show who that sid is related to one of the registry files should hae in description localhost\admin or
    something similair)
    5. right click the sid and press delete.
    6. restart your machine and log back on with the admin account, this will then rebuild the admin profile... dont worry when it loads and none of your personal settings are saved or files or folders... go to c:\users
in here you will see two folders for the admin account, one will be just admin and the other most likely admin.localhost
i cant remember which one is which but just check both, one will still have all your files and folders in it.
i suggest making a backup of your data before doing this incase something does go wrong, but ive had this happen many times in a domain enviorment and has worked for me everytime.

  • Essential event viewer bugs with "Forwarded Events" log in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7

To my general experience, Windows event viewer is one of the most problematic, faulty management tools in the case of extensive use of its more sophisticated capabilities. The sole description as well as reproduction of some entangled failures would require
    remarkable effort.
With the "Forwarded Events" log however, the situation becomes particularly worse in that even simple functionality fails and workarounds are difficult to find. That’s what I’ll describe here in order to share my experience with interested users.
For precision: I’ve extensively used event viewer on a German Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Windows SBS 2011 Standard SP1). The bugs I found on that system, I could reproduce on a German Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit SP1, too.
Problem 1: Failure of even simple event filtering
To reproduce this problem, execute these steps on a test machine with any of the two OS mentioned above:
    (i) To prepare log contents, do either of the following:
    (a) populate some events to your local "Forwarded Events" log (most simply by subscribing events from other logs of the same machine; stop subscription if you have collected some events)
    Or
    (b) copy a non-empty log file "ForwardedEvents.evtx" from another machine (with any of the two OS mentioned above) to your test machine and open the file in event viewer.
(ii) Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log and open the filtering dialog. In the "Includes/Excludes Event IDs" field, type: 1-9000. Click OK.
(iii) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no event IDs between 1 and 9000 in your test log?
(iv) Another example, if you have forwarded security events in your test log: Clear filter, if any previous filter is in place. Open the filtering dialog. In "Keywords" sub-dialog, choose "Audit Success". Click OK.
    (v) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no successful security monitoring events in your test log?
I’ll finish here. If you have a rich variety of events in your test log available, let your imagination run wild to test around. Finally include some simple manually created or modified XPath filters on the XML tab of the filtering dialog. I promise, you’ll
find a lot of additional strange results.
Problem 2: Cannot save manually selected events to .evtx file
Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log. In the results pane, select one or more events by highlighting them by mouse clicks. In context menu, choose "Save selected events". In the "save as" dialog, choose file type *.evtx
and save your file. Open the newly created file in event viewer. Result: Surprise, no events inside the new file!
Have more fun with forwarded events
    Helmut

Did you mean that right click Forwarded Event and select "Filter Current Log..."? Since I can filter correct event vai the "Filter Current Log..." in my Lab environment.
    Hi Justin,
yes, I mean "Filter Current Log ... " (in my German systems: "Aktuelles Protokoll filtern ... ").
What do you mean with "my Lab environment" exactly?
In the meantime, I performed additional tests. I copied the "ForwardedEvents.evtx" test file from Server 2008 R2 resp. Windows 7 to
    (i) German Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit RTM
    (ii) German Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit, up-to-date
in order to view and filter the file there.
Results: Same event viewer problem on Windows 8 RTM, but correct behavior on Windows 8.1!
    Best regards, Helmut

  • Crashing LabVIEW with dynamic user events

    Hello,
we are able to execute the attached sample with a german LV 8.2.1 on a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz PC with 1GB Ram and W2K SP4.
However we seem to have problems on a faster machine with an english Windows XP Server but also LV 8.2.1. Could this please be verified?
So start the test, first manualy load the "Button Menue 13.vi", then the "Button Wrapper 13.vi" and finally the "Button Receiver 13.vi".
After this activate "Button Menue 13.vi" and let it run for a short while. After softly stopping "Button Menue 13.vi" with the local "Stop"-button, all VIs should indicated the identical amount of received dynamic user events.
On our local PC we can run sucessfully and quickly to e.g. 10000 events and more.

Everytime I open Safari on my MacBook Pro a pop-up window from my Finder menu, with the Applications highlighted on the left in the favorites column with the Resources folder highlighted comes up and locks my Safari page until I manually close the Resources window then I have to refresh the internet search address line at the top of Safari. Can someone tell me how to stop this. It started after a software upgrade. It didn’t do that before. Thank you.

A few thoughts for diagnosis/testing purposes:
Have you recently run the disk utility and repaired HD and permissions? If not do so.
Boot into the Safe mode - hold down shift key on boot - and see if the problems are still there. Some functions won't work but see if anything odd happens.
Check your startup items. Get rid of them temporarily.
Create a new user account and see if the problems occur with the new account.
Lastly, be sure your backup is up-to-date.
