Convert vhd
Hi,
can i convert a dynamic vhd to fixed vhd or vhdx but only insert to the fixed vhd the actual size of the used space that is in the dynamic vhd?

Convert a dynamic vhd to fixed vhd using Convert-VHD cmdlet
Hi folks,
I have dynamically expanding vhd. Now I want to convert it to fixed size vhd.
I used the Convert-VHD cmdlet, which works fine.
But if I give the source and want to overwrite my dynamic vhd to the fixed vhd, it is throwing error, such the file exists.
Convert-VHD –Path "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" –DestinationPath "\path\to\vhd\mydata.vhd" -VHDType Fixed -DeleteSource
Is there any other option (like -Force) available for this ?
Note: Without using a temp file and renaming, I hope we have a better solution
Thanks,
SaleemSyntax is like below
Convert-VHD -Path C:\temp\200MB-Dynamic.vhdx -DestinationPath c:\temp\200MB-fixed.vhdx -VHDType Fixed
you need to have different names :-) like a copy command in the old days of DOS
otherwise the Option -deletesource in your example would delete the disk file ? makes no sense right
What is the Problem to fire a Rename Command after the Convert ?

How to convert VHDX to VHD file format on windows 8 / Windows server 2012?
Here is an article to describe how to convert virtual hard disk VHDX file format to VHD

Thanks for your contribution to Windows Server Forum!
To convert VHD format, you can also use Convert-VHD comlet. The Convert-VHD cmdlet converts a virtual hard disk file by copying the data from a source virtual hard disk file to a new virtual hard disk file of a specified format and version type. The format
is determined by the file extension of the specified files, either .vhdx or .vhd. Conversion is an offline operation; the virtual hard disk must not be attached when the operation is started.

Hi!
I have installed Hyper V, and I'd like to convert my vmdk (vmware) to vhd files.
In order to do that, I download this:
http://vmtoolkit.com/blogs/announcements/archive/2006/11/20/vmdk-to-vhd-converter-available.aspx
The result is a file very small (56kb) whereas the size of my virtual hard disk is 8Gb.
Then, I attach this file (vhd) to my VM but the system doesn't boot. Why?
ThanksSimon,
VMWare
du Win2k8R2,
le convertir en
un VHD,
et enfin à double
boot
mon installation Win7
original et
le VHD convertis.
C'est le seul moyen
que j'ai trouvé pour
lancer Hyper-V sur
Windows 7. (et merci a Google translate)
Salut!
Aaron
Simon,
My french is pretty bad... I haven't spoken it in about 20 years, but I understood just enough to do the conversion. Thanks a lot for the guide! I wanted to install Win2k8R2 with Hyper-V on my Win7 installation.
I started with a VMWare image of Win2k8R2 (w/ Hyper-V) before the first reboot during installation, converted it to a VHD (via his guide), and finally I dual booted my original installation of Win7 with the converted VHD (yes, physical boot of virtual
hard drive). This is the only way that I could boot a 64-bit version of Windows on my Windows 7 hardware.

Converting to fixed vhd - large disk
Hi,
Have a dynamic vhd of 1.7 TB - currently expanded to 1.4 TB.
The volumes on the SAN is 2TB.
Need to convert the dynamic vhd to fixed vhd but as you can see there is not enough Space on the SAN volume.
Any suggestion on how this may be solved without loosing the huge amount of data on the disk?

Hyper-V Server 2012 Migration Questions
Hello All,
This is my first post here, but I have used these forums many times for information. Sorry in advance for the long post.
I have a few questions regarding migration to Hyper-V server 2012 for my production environment. I have done quite a bit of reading, but I have a few direct questions and I would like to get some direct answers.
My current production environment consists of one PowerEdge 2900 with 2 Xeon X5460 Quad Core 3.16GHz CPUs, 24 GB of RAM and a RAID 10 consisting of 8, 500 GB HDDs for a total of 2TB of storage. I am currently running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise w/ GUI as the
Hyper-V host OS. I have 4 virtual machines all also running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The 4 virtual machines consist of 1 domain controller, 1 Exchange Server with Exchange 2010 Standard, 1 Server running SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and the remaining server
running IIS with FTP and HTTP.
The network topology is as follows….
Hopefully it is clear from my diagram that the Hyper-V host OS is connected to the same physical network as the domain, but is not a joined to the domain. I set it up this way because I had concerns about connectivity and manageability because the domain
controller is a guest VM. Also, the IIS server is on a completely different physical network independent of the domain.
What I would like to accomplish is the migration of the above environment to Hyper-V Server 2012 as is. I want to keep my existing guest VMs unchanged and running Server 2008 R2 for now as well as keep the existing network topology intact.
I have 3 additional servers in a separate test environment that would be able to serve as temporary storage or whatever is needed for the migration process.
Here are the two main things I would like to accomplish with this migration…
1. Make the transition from Server 2008 R2 to Hyper-V Server 2012 as a host OS.
2. Migrate virtual hard disks from .VHD to the new .VHDX format.
All that being said, I have finally come to my questions regarding this process.
First and foremost, I would obviously need to back up my current setup in case something goes horribly wrong during the migration. My question regarding the initial backup is would it be better to do a bare metal backup of the Hyper-V host or should I do
individual backups (bare-metal?) of the Guest VMs from within their operating systems?
Second, since I plan to use Hyper-V Server 2012, I will have to manage the host OS using the RSAT from a domain joined client running Windows 7 Professional. How much of a pain is it going to be to setup RSAT and manage the non-domain joined host from a
domain joined client? Is there a better way without using SCVMM or using Server 2012 w/ a GUI as the host OS?
Third, are there any concerns I should have, precautions I should take or procedures I need to do before, during or after the migration regarding the existing VMs and the new virtualized hardware environment on the same physical host?
Forth, should I use the trial version of SCVMM 2012 SP1 (or another previous version) to perform the migration? What should I be aware of using SCVMM for the migration and then discontinuing its use after the migration is complete and moving to management
using the RSAT?
Fifth, if I don’t use SCVMM for the migration, what is the best procedure for moving the VMs? Should I just copy the VHDs to a temporary storage location, install Hyper-V server 2012, copy the VHDs back, create new VMs and attach the VHDs or should I use
the export/import process?
Number six, when is the best time to migrate the VHDs to VHDX format and what would be the best method?
And finally, do I need to worry about USN rollback with a single domain controller? From my reading, this seems to be a point of disagreement. Some people say it could happen while others say it won’t. Is there any point during the migration process where
it could occur either during the copying of VHDs or from the switch to VHDX?
Again, sorry for the long post and thanks for staying with me this far. Any information would be much appreciated1) As Jens said below with Windows Server 2012 you can simple copy the configuration files and VHDs from a 2008 R2 server to a 2012 server and import them - they one caveat to this is that any vlan configuration is lost and you have to simply re-create it.
Optionally you can also export the virtual machines from Windows Server 2008 R2 and then import them on Windows Server 2012.
2) Remote management in a workgroup does have some caveat's associated with it - take a look at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2009/08/07/hvremote-refresh.aspx. Generally I would recommend joining the Hyper-V management operating system to the domain - not just because of these issues but for a number of other features to work properly
(see below)
3) I always recommend validating the hardware and environment after the installation before migrating critical workloads to it - testing networking, backup etc... to make sure they function as expected. Also ensure that you upgrade the integration
components in the VM's after the migration.
4) That is an option - though you might find you like SCVMM
5) Recreating VM's using existing VHD's has some issues for example the BIOS GUID changes, all of the NIC's are re-plug and played etc... When possible copying the configuration or using export is much better.
6) The sooner the better - VHDx has a number of significant advantages, you can do the migration using the Hyper-V manager UI (edit disk) or via powershell with Convert-VHD. Do keep in mind that during the conversation you need 2x the space (for the
original and the new VHDx).
7) In the past you could get into trouble if you for example snapshotted an AD virtual machine and than reverted it - taking one offline and then brining it back online was never a problem. In Windows Server 2012 we addressed this with a feature called
generation ID's.
Domain considerations... A few things to keep in mind regarding the choice to not domain join the Hyper-V server.
- You can't live migrate virtual machines
- You can't utilize Hyper-V over SMB
- Management is more difficult and less secure

I used the following link to create a vhd via Hyper-V.
I basically installed my iso on a VM and backed it up as vhdx, then converted it to vhd.
I uploaded it onto azure and tried to built a VM using "My Images" folder but the installation keep getting stuck at Running(Provisioning) stage.
Has anybody experienced this issue before?
ThanksHi;
Could you please let me know if:
1. If LIS is installed on the VM :http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41554
2. Is the Linux Agent installed :https://github.com/Azure/WALinuxAgent
Also what version of OS did you try to install on the hyper V and upload ?And Also does the converted VHD work when loaded into Hyper-V ?( Just to rule out any corruption of the disk while it was converted)
Please note that you will have to install a VM in hyper-v and then convert the VHDX into a VHD and then upload.

Hi, Just started to play with Hyper V on win 8.1 enterprise, before this I was using VPC 2007 for (32 bit guest) and vmware (64 bit guest)
Here is the problem I have, I have windows 7 32 as a guest running till date using vpc 2007, now I am trying to use the vhd file in hyper v
Option 1
Tried configuring the same vhd file in hyperv by uninstalling (addins) and removing network card configuration and shared folder
Option 2
Tried converting vhd to vhdx using hyperv gui and ps command line
In the both the options when I start the vm on hyperv, the cursor just blinks
In the event log I get to see this, any solutions for this would be of great help
'abcd' was faulted because the guest executed an intercepting instruction not supported by Hyper-V instruction emulation. If the problem persists, contact Product Support. (Virtual machine ID E965D4B5-E976-45FD-B004-F51C12662360)

SathyaUninstall the VPC VMAdditions from within the VM - they are trying to do something that Hyper-V does not allow.
Hyper-V is not Virtual Server and the Virtual Server VMAdditions are not compatible with Hyper-V.
Also, you have to set the HAL to re-detect. VPC relied on a custom HAL, and if the OS in your VM is old enough, it won't automatically detect the change and will continue to use the VPC compatible HAL.

Error 1401 deploying Template in SCVMM 2012 R2 RU2
I got the following error when i deploy a new created template with App Controller and VMM 2012 R2 RU2.
1401–SelfServiceActionNotAllowed
The template is a converted vhd from wim with Powershell. It is located on an library server in VMM. I can choose the template in App Controller and after 3 to 10 Seconds the job fails.
If i deploy an template that was imported long time ago (before install of 2012 R2 RU1) i´m able to complete deployment.
Can someone help with some information?!I found the Solution by my self in the following link: TechNet Library
When you create templates for self-service users, be aware of the following changes in VMM:
◦ In VMM, the concept of a "self-service owner" for a template no longer exists. A template that is to be shared by members of a self-service user role should have no owner assigned. When a template with no owner is assigned to a self-service user role that has the Author, Deploy, or Deploy (Template Only) action assigned to it, all members can use the template. However, when an owner is assigned to the template, only the owner can use the template
With an Update of VMM they changed the behavior. I Changed the Owner to a Global AD-Group and now i can sucessfull deploy templates. -
IWork iOS 8 file format on WebDAV Server?
Has anyone tried sharing iWork documents between a Mac running OSX 10 (Yosemite) and an iPhone/iPad running iOS 8 using the WebDav server in OSX Server? Specifically, do iWork iOS 8 apps still save/copy documents to the WebDAV server in a .zip format which iWork OSX can’t read?

To convert VHD format, you can also use Convert-VHD comlet. The Convert-VHD cmdlet converts a virtual hard disk file by copying the data from a source virtual hard disk file to a new virtual hard disk file of a specified format and version type. The format
is determined by the file extension of the specified files, either .vhdx or .vhd. Conversion is an offline operation; the virtual hard disk must not be attached when the operation is started.

BizTalk Developers training kit files
Hi All,
I am trying to learn Biztalk on my own and was wondering if anyone has downloaded the developers training kit. My issue is that I want the Lab files in the AllFiles folder. Would appreciate if someone can tell me where I can download just those without having
to download all the vhd files and expanding them.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14865
I want these files because I have a virtual server and I don't know if I can install HyperV server on a virtual server and run the lab files.
All help appreciated.
Thanks.
ManishHi Manish,
I am not really clear on your question. But you have several choices to run virtual machines. 2 popular choices are the following:
1. Create the virtual machine instance directly from the VHD file you download from Microsoft but for that you need Windows Server with Hyper-V.
2. If you don't have that version of Windows, you can use VMWare to run your virtual machine. VMWare has 2 free products for your scenario:
- VMWare player to create and run Virtual machines on any Windows client (ie Windows Vista, 7 which might be your case): http://www.vmware.com/products/player/overview.html
- VMware vCenter Converters which can convert VHD disks into vmdk (format used by VMWare player): http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/. There is another
tool I also know of to convert vhd files which is: http://www.starwindsoftware.com/converter . And there are probably others you can find on the internet as well.

Convert VMDK to VHD locally without uploading to Hyper-V or Azure
Hello,
I'm running Windows 8.1 Professional on my laptop. I'd like to convert a VMDK to a VHD, without uploading the resulting VHD to Azure or Hyper-V directly. I'll handle the image upload and VM creation through my own PowerShell scripts. How can I use the Microsoft
Virtual Machine Converter tool to achieve this? The GUI only gives me the options to upload directly to Azure or move the VM into Hyper-V, neither of which I want to do. I simply want to perform the conversion, for the time being.

CreateSparseDisk error using Convert-WindowsImage.ps1 to create VHD for Windows 10 Preview
I have been trying to use convert-windowsimage.ps1 to create a Windows 10 .VHD under Windows 8.1 (inside VirtualBox)
.\convert-windowsimage.ps1 -Sourcepath .\install.wim -Edition Professional -VHDFormat VHD -DiskType Fixed -SizeBytes 40GB -VHDPath .\Win10Previewx64.vhd
This returns:
ERROR : Exception calling "CreateFixedDisk" with "4" argument(s): "The parameter is incorrect"
I get a similar error if I accept the default to create a sparse disk and the default SizeBytes value.
I did notice when typing the command in the ISE that most of the parameter values turn purple, but with SizeBytes 40GB changes back to cream when you add the B of GB - I'm not sure if this is relevant. The code does appear to expect GB TB or KB.Post questions about scripts to the author here:

Hi,
Running Server 2012 R2
I have a requirement to convert a vhdx to vhd. I used the builtin feature in the hyperv manager to convert the vhdx (Fixed) disk to a vhd (fixed).
When i create a new server an attach this vhd disk, i get an error when the vm boots. It briefly displays the windows logo, then gives an error: boot failure. Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device. This occurs
whether i attach the disk as ide or scsi.
Why would the converted drive no longer be bootable?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
SeanIf the VM was a Generation2 virtual machine, then it is UEFI. And VHD can only be used with Generation1 virtual machines which are BIOS.
The OS in the VM cannot simply handle the bootloader change between BIOS and UEFI.
That is what I suspect is going on.

I've tried everyway to Sunday to get work-arounds for this but I'm stumped...
I am breaking into the Windows 8.1 with Update installation after adding my license, and creating a setup to use Native VHD to install to.
I create a vdisk type=expandable, yet at some point during the installation it is getting converted to fixed!
I've tried everything I could think of including formatting it while in the CLI prior to refreshing the volumes, and selecting the VHD disk volume for installation. Yet, after the installation is complete... the "actual" vdisk file should
only be around 11-14GB (regardless of the maximum size during its' creation with diskpart), however... sure enough, after Windows has finished doing its' thing and rebooting... the file ends up being the same size as the maximum property provided during the
vdisk creation with diskpart.... it should not be, it was of type "expandable" >.<
Why is this happening?Hi,
It's not possible that without any settings, it converts into fixed disk. So how did you configure?
Please follow this guide to check if you have operated that:
