Converting 60i to 24p

Does anyone know how to convert 60i footage to 24p so the cadence looks smooth? I'm working on a long project and loaned one of my EX1s out to someone who changed the settings and forgot to change them back. Now I have 1 day's worth of footage where one camera was set to 60i and the other to 24p. My project is 24p and the 60i footage (even when deinterlaced to 30p) looks jumpy. I've tried putting it directly into the timeline (FCP7) and a couple settings in compressor. All fix the interlacing issue but none the cadence.

First off, everything should be conveted to ProRes (LT or Regular is fine).
In Compressor, select the ProRes preset and duplicate it. This will create a new preset under "Custom" that you will change the settings.
Under the Video Tab, set the frame rate> 23.976, the field order> progressive and the Retimeing Quality > Best (Motion Compensated)
Conversions will take a while.

  • Is it Possible to Convert 60i Footage to 24p?

    I was wondering if it's possible to convert footage shot in 60i to 24p and if it'll look good.
    Like, if I took 60i footage and put it out at 24 FPS in progressive scan through compressor, would it take out the correct frames? Or would it look all weird?
    Just curious if it looks good and if there's a good way to do it.

    Can anyone walk me through the steps of converting 60i SD footage to 24p footage that can be played back on a 60i timeline in Final Cut?
    I realize that anything playing on a 60i timeline is going to be interlaced but I want the same 24p look that the Panasonic DVX100 puts out.
    I have already tried converting 60i to 60p and then droping that on a 24p timeline. It definately has the look but it seems like I might have lost a bit of resolution and even with that I havent actually exporting that movie and burning to a dvd to see how that looks.
    Any help would be great.

  • Canon 7D 720/60p converted to 720/24p in Premiere Pro CS4

    I've exhausted all my resources trying to find a simple answer but it seems like anything regarding 60p to 24p is about slow motion video which I already know how to do and understand thoroughly.
    My question is, with my Canon 7D, there's no option for 720/24p (23.976), there's only 720/60p (29.97) or 50p.  Getting 30p video is simple because Premiere just drops every other frame.  Now 24p is a little trickier.  There is an option for 1080/24p which is overkill for what I want and need to do.  I also don't have the capacity in memory cards for that.
    I understand that if I drop a 60p video on a 24p timeline, Premiere will just drop frames.  But since 60 is not divisible by 24.. how does Premiere know which frames to drop?  I believe there's also a Frame Blending option as well.. how would that work? 
    I'm looking for the best way to convert 60p video to 24p in Premiere.  I can't imagine it being overly complicated.

    Canon 7D has a max recording limit of 4gb (per file) due to FAT32 file system restrictions.  At 1080p,  4gb = 12minutes.  On a 16gb card, that's only 48minutes.  At 720p, 4gb = 30minutes.  That's 2 hours.
    Then it's Canon's encoding scheme or sensor use that makes such a huge difference.  My AVCHD files from a Panasonic HMC150 are smaller at 1080p24 than at 720p60.  Which makes sense since the raw pixel count per second is less with 1080p24 (49,766,400 at 1080p24 versus 55,296,00 for 720p60).
    I have a tutorial on my web site about using dv2film, which is designed to convert 60i DV to 24p DV.  But it also works for HD footage.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

  • Troubles with 60i and 24p movie

    I am a newbie for sure, so please forgive my lame description of my problem.
    I have Premiere Pro CC and have imported 24p movies from my 5D Mk III onto the timeline, all good.  I am trying to do cut aways of footage that was shot on a Vixia G10 camcorder at 60i (an oversight). When I drag onto the timeline, it plays a choppy postage stamp sized version on the preview stage.  Thus, on the cutaways the original footage is there with a tiny little cutaway in the middle.
    Is there a way to pull the video into CC and have it deal with the difference in frame rates?  I have searched but didn't find anything that seemed to fit..

  • Convert 25p to 24p ... I *want" to slow it down by 4%. How?

    I have a FCP timeline in DVCPRO-HD 1080i50. Footage is shot in 25p in P2 format.
    I would like to convert to 24p. And I would like the converted timeline to be 4% slower. And so each frame is preserved and unaltered.
    I've looked at exporting to Compressor, but the conversion appears to "mess around" with the frames in order to not end up 4% slower.
    Is there a way to re-time each frames, and slow the timeline down by 4%?

    I exported the 25p clips as a self-contained QT file. Then I brought it into FCP and used Cinema Tools to Conform to 24p. Then I exported it again. The result: the 25p file and the 24p file were the SAME duration. In other works, it has not slowed down by 4%.
    I need a way to change from 25p to 24p by matching frame by frame, so that the 24p video is 4% slower.
    Any help appreciated.

    I have video footage shot by JVC-HD7 1920x1080 @ 50fps progressive after deinterlacing.
    And have perfect 50fps in final cut timeline.
    Need to convert it to true 24fps as film
    Simply I have tried changing the timeline to 24, the motion looks almost like film but I believe it is not 100% true 24p.
    Q1 How to convert 50fps progressive footage to true 24p?
    Q2 When 50fps is converted to 25p by removing every 2nd frame; then what happens to 25th frame in 24p timeline?

    You need a film scanner to enter the digital realm.
    Your friend is probably done with film because he knows digital photography is the way to go. So why don't you go fully digital as well? Or are you really in need of a film camera?

  • Convert 60i (30fps interlaced) to 50i (25fps interlaced)

    Hi,
    I was wondering what will Premiere CS6 (or Media Encoder)  do if I ask it to convert NTSC (or 60i HD footage) to PAL (or 501 HD footage).
    Will it just through a frame out every five.. thus giving me a jumping result.. or will it use some sort of algorithm to build a new 50i feed starting with the 60i feed?
    What will this algorithm be? Like .. (just guessing) first filed first frame + first field second frame --> interpolated becomes first field... etc...
    Can somebody give me a specific answer on how (if Premiere has it) this algorithm works?
    Obviously I don't want/need slow motions, I don't want jumps in frames, etc...
    I just need the best fastest way fo converting interlaced NTSC to interlaced PAL, keeping the same lenght, the same audio pitch, etc...

    We now can create 3d footage strting from 2d
    And it looks every bit as bad as using Adobe tools to convert from NTSC<->PAL.
    we dan create 50fps footage starting from 25fps
    The math is very simple on that one, just show each frame twice.  Not so going from 30 to 25.

  • Trying to Convert 29P to 24P

    Hello
    I recently shot some footage (by error), in the standard 29.97 frame rate. My other cameramen were shooting in 24P. Bad mistake on my part.
    I've read where Magic Bullet can actually help create a 24P look to 29P footage, but it all sounds rather complicated. Do you guys know where or how this can be accomplished?

    After much labor and research, I can finally answer my own question. Some of you may find this information helpful if you're having the same problem, or have just wondered how you might be able to solve this.
    There are actually several applications that will convert 29P standard interlaced footage to 24P or at least to a 24 film look (both options). This will help when you're trying to match certain footage to match a 'film look'
    No matter what you hear about the new Magic Bullet 2007, they are still testing a component called 'Frames', which may eventually do the job. They do have have other nice plug in filters similar to Nattress that will apply effects, (after the fact).
    But to actually get 29P to look like 24P, it seems a stand alone program works best (so far).
    And DV Film (easy to use), did the trick for me; http://www.dvfilmstore.com/dvfilm-maker-for-mac.html
    It's reasonably priced, renders fast and unlike 'After Effects' or any other complicated stand alone program, it won't tax your brain. So like as the old saying goes, if you want the job done, do it yourself.

  • Convert HD to 24p... or as close as possible?

    I have HD footage that I'd like (and have tried) to convert to "film quality" image. I know there's only so much that can be done, but I'm curious if anyone knows how to best reach this goal through iMovie HD and/or QT Pro. I tried as follows: I exported an iMovie project as QT full quality. Then, I imported it into QT Pro and re-exported from QT Pro with the 24p setting... but it doesn't seem to really have an effect. Any sugggestions? Many thanks!

    you should ask this popular question in the FinalCut section of this forum... FC offers some tools & plug-ins to create a movie-look, which basicly is:
    * progressive/no interlace
    * different field of depth (video is everywhere crystal sharp)/more "blurr"
    * different color rooms...
    for iM, a cosumer product, you need additional tools, as QTpro7 or the JES Deinterlacer to accomplish some of these tasks....

  • 60i to 24p conversion problem-Compressor 3

    I'm trying to do a conversion from 29.97 interlaced footage to 23.976 progressive. The results look good but the clip comes out 125% of its original duration. I don't want slow motion. On the frame control page i activate the button that says:
    so source frames play at 23.98 fps. The button above that which says Set Duration to: is not activated, and its input field is empty. However when i finish the compression and come back and look at this saved setting, the button for duration is still not activated, but in its field, grayed out, is 125% of source. And this is what appears to have happened to my clip. It is 125% of source length. Converting frame rates is not supposed to affect duration, is it? Anybody know why this is happening?

    Thanks for the response. Here is my LOV query. I am saving the SHIPTO_NAME which contains the ampersand from Page3 to an item on Page2 using the branch parameters. I may have said before it was on the button form but this case is using the branch form.

  • Transcoding from AVCHD 60i for 24p

    Sorry for this long post. I have spent a long time looking for answers.
    I would like to combine different formats into one sequence. I primarily have AVCHD 1080p24 but need to include some 1080i60. All shot with Panasonic Lumix GH2.
    I have logged and captured with FCP7 – Target Format = Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    FCP7 says:
    - Source Format 1080p24 is Vid Rate 23.98 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Non-Drop / Pulldown = None
    - Source Format 1080i60 is Vid Rate 29.97 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Drop Pulldown = Upper (Odd)
    I would much prefer to make the 29.97 conform to the 23.98. But I don’t know exactly what my workflow should be. Want to retain highest quality possible for eventual DVD and Blu-Ray. Do I need to use compressor on the 29.97 before dropping them into my Sequence set up for 23.98?
    All of my clips look good in the viewer slug. They also play fine when I put them individually in my sequence with conformed setting (letting FC change settings automatically). Only issue was some slight alternating horizontal lines in the 29.97 clips.  The lines are tolerable, but in any case, I thought that I needed to deinterlace the 1080i60 - 29.97 fps. Is that correct?     I put the quick time files transferred through fcp into compressor and tride some different transcodes.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ Reverse Telecine. (This produced 24p).
    - Also tried this with the “for Interlace material” and “for Progressive material” versions also set at Telecine and got the same result.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ for Interlaced Material with Frame Controls set to Resize Filter “Fast”. Output Fields “Progressive”. Deinterlace “Best (Motion compensated). Anti-alias & Details Level “0”. Rate Conversion “Best  High Quality motion compensated”. Duration 100%. (This took a long time to process).
    I imported these new transcoded clips into Final Cut.
    Once again they, all play fine in the viewer slug except for some strange blotchy pixel distortion at one part on the clip that I did not use Reverse Telecine on.
    However, I did the same test with the timeline and all of the clips now have horizontal lines at least 10 times worse than before! The clip without reverse telecine (still in 29.97) is slightly better off. My sequence settings are:
    HDTV 1080i (16:9)  - I’m not sure what this should be…
    Pixel Aspect Ration = Square
    Field Dominance = None
    Timebase = Set according to clip I was testing
    Quicktime Compressor = ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Quality = 100%
    I’m guessing my workflow is wrong. Do I need to just drop the non transcoded 29.97 clips into the 23.98 sequence and then “send to” Compressor? What settings would I need to use? Or am I supposed to some how transfer/capture the clips into compressor before trasfering to FCP? I don’t know how to work with AVCHD format without first transferring to FCP via ProRes compressor.

    Still hoping for a reply on this. If anyone has any advice would much appreciated.

  • When is 60p no better than converted 60i?

    A number of upper end consumer camcorders indicate they can record 1080p60. Some of them (like Panasonic HDC-TM700 say they only record in 60p) but most don't indicate (like Samsung HMX-M20 which says it records both). How do I determine whether they are actually just converting 1080i60 to 1080p60 (which I could do with compressor) or whether they are actually providing a higher quality image with native 60p?     The issue with 1080p60 is that there really is no delivery method that supports it. No final output type plays that back. BluRay? Nope. 23.98 and 29.97 only. Tape? Only HDCAM SR, and that's high end. But then again, 1080p60 isn't a broadcast format either. 1080 is converted to 29.97 for air.
    So that begs the question...why shoot 1080p60? The only reason I see is to be able to slow the footage down for nice slow motion. Shoot 1080p60...convert that to 1080p30 for 50% speed. Edit in 29.97...or 23.98 (for more like 65% slow motion).

  • Shared Droplet for converting 30i to 24p

    Hey --
    Just thought I'd share this. I created a droplet for compressor that you can drop 30i material into it and it will convert the material (audio and all) to 23.98.
    It does it not by removing frames, but by using Compressor's Optical Flow technology to rebuild frames to create 'new' material.
    The goal was to incorporate old 30i material into a working project being done in 24 and try to make it as smooth as possible.
    I've tested it out on various sources and seems to work very well.
    This is not to say it is better or worse than other options out there... just another one that seems (for me) to work VERY well.
    Be prepared... it is a render nightmare! But the good thing about it is it will batch if you've got lots to do.

    We are shooting with the HDX-900. Mostly 720p. Our deck is the
    Panasonic AJ-1400. I'm looking at wanting to convert footage shot at
    60p to 50% slomo.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    In the Browser, does it say 59.94 for the frame rate? If so, then it is some hiccup. I hit this every now and then. In this case I would then use Cinema Tools to OPEN the clip and then CONFORM it to 23.98fps. COPY IT FIRST...it modifies the clip destructively...meaning it will be slow motion now forever...no going back.
