60i to 24p

Can anyone walk me through the steps of converting 60i SD footage to 24p footage that can be played back on a 60i timeline in Final Cut?
I realize that anything playing on a 60i timeline is going to be interlaced but I want the same 24p look that the Panasonic DVX100 puts out.
I have already tried converting 60i to 60p and then droping that on a 24p timeline. It definately has the look but it seems like I might have lost a bit of resolution and even with that I havent actually exporting that movie and burning to a dvd to see how that looks.
Any help would be great.

First off, everything should be conveted to ProRes (LT or Regular is fine).
In Compressor, select the ProRes preset and duplicate it. This will create a new preset under "Custom" that you will change the settings.
Under the Video Tab, set the frame rate> 23.976, the field order> progressive and the Retimeing Quality > Best (Motion Compensated)
Conversions will take a while.

  • Converting 60i to 24p

Does anyone know how to convert 60i footage to 24p so the cadence looks smooth? I'm working on a long project and loaned one of my EX1s out to someone who changed the settings and forgot to change them back. Now I have 1 day's worth of footage where one camera was set to 60i and the other to 24p. My project is 24p and the 60i footage (even when deinterlaced to 30p) looks jumpy. I've tried putting it directly into the timeline (FCP7) and a couple settings in compressor. All fix the interlacing issue but none the cadence.

  • Troubles with 60i and 24p movie

I am a newbie for sure, so please forgive my lame description of my problem.
I have Premiere Pro CC and have imported 24p movies from my 5D Mk III onto the timeline, all good.  I am trying to do cut aways of footage that was shot on a Vixia G10 camcorder at 60i (an oversight). When I drag onto the timeline, it plays a choppy postage stamp sized version on the preview stage.  Thus, on the cutaways the original footage is there with a tiny little cutaway in the middle.
Is there a way to pull the video into CC and have it deal with the difference in frame rates?  I have searched but didn't find anything that seemed to fit..
    thanks in advance...

  • Transcoding from AVCHD 60i for 24p

Sorry for this long post. I have spent a long time looking for answers.
I would like to combine different formats into one sequence. I primarily have AVCHD 1080p24 but need to include some 1080i60. All shot with Panasonic Lumix GH2.
I have logged and captured with FCP7 – Target Format = Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
    FCP7 says:
    - Source Format 1080p24 is Vid Rate 23.98 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Non-Drop / Pulldown = None
    - Source Format 1080i60 is Vid Rate 29.97 fps / 1920x1080 / TC Format = Drop Pulldown = Upper (Odd)
I would much prefer to make the 29.97 conform to the 23.98. But I don’t know exactly what my workflow should be. Want to retain highest quality possible for eventual DVD and Blu-Ray. Do I need to use compressor on the 29.97 before dropping them into my Sequence set up for 23.98?
All of my clips look good in the viewer slug. They also play fine when I put them individually in my sequence with conformed setting (letting FC change settings automatically). Only issue was some slight alternating horizontal lines in the 29.97 clips.  The lines are tolerable, but in any case, I thought that I needed to deinterlace the 1080i60 - 29.97 fps. Is that correct? CompressorManualLink
I put the quick time files transferred through fcp into compressor and tride some different transcodes.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ Reverse Telecine. (This produced 24p).
    - Also tried this with the “for Interlace material” and “for Progressive material” versions also set at Telecine and got the same result.
    - Apple ProRes 422 HQ for Interlaced Material with Frame Controls set to Resize Filter “Fast”. Output Fields “Progressive”. Deinterlace “Best (Motion compensated). Anti-alias & Details Level “0”. Rate Conversion “Best  High Quality motion compensated”. Duration 100%. (This took a long time to process).
I imported these new transcoded clips into Final Cut.
Once again they, all play fine in the viewer slug except for some strange blotchy pixel distortion at one part on the clip that I did not use Reverse Telecine on.
However, I did the same test with the timeline and all of the clips now have horizontal lines at least 10 times worse than before! The clip without reverse telecine (still in 29.97) is slightly better off. My sequence settings are:
    HDTV 1080i (16:9)  - I’m not sure what this should be…
    Pixel Aspect Ration = Square
    Field Dominance = None
Timebase = Set according to clip I was testing
Quicktime Compressor = ProRes 422 (HQ)
    Quality = 100%
I’m guessing my workflow is wrong. Do I need to just drop the non transcoded 29.97 clips into the 23.98 sequence and then “send to” Compressor? What settings would I need to use? Or am I supposed to some how transfer/capture the clips into compressor before trasfering to FCP? I don’t know how to work with AVCHD format without first transferring to FCP via ProRes compressor.

Still hoping for a reply on this. If anyone has any advice would much appreciated.

  • 60i to 24p conversion problem-Compressor 3

I'm trying to do a conversion from 29.97 interlaced footage to 23.976 progressive. The results look good but the clip comes out 125% of its original duration. I don't want slow motion. On the frame control page i activate the button that says:
so source frames play at 23.98 fps. The button above that which says Set Duration to: is not activated, and its input field is empty. However when i finish the compression and come back and look at this saved setting, the button for duration is still not activated, but in its field, grayed out, is 125% of source. And this is what appears to have happened to my clip. It is 125% of source length. Converting frame rates is not supposed to affect duration, is it? Anybody know why this is happening?

    Hi Tajuddin
Thanks for the response. Here is my LOV query. I am saving the SHIPTO_NAME which contains the ampersand from Page3 to an item on Page2 using the branch parameters. I may have said before it was on the button form but this case is using the branch form.
select distinct shipto_name dv, shipto_name rv
    from data_mgr.custs
    where jde_customer_type = 'CR'
    and cust_channel_cd not in ('I','R')
and shipto_name not like 'AGENT HOUSE%'
    order by 1
    Assignments:
    Set these: P2_AGENCY_NAME_DISPLAY
    To : &P3_AGENCY_NAME.
The branch logic is conditional on the user pressing a 'Create New Contract' button that triggers this branch.
When Page2 is rendered the Agency Name shows the ampersand as '&' with the 'amp;' appended to it.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • 24p or 60i?

This may not be a question particularly pertaining to Final Cut, but I figure someone should know this. I've been filming a short film in 24p, but am going to have a scene all in slow motion (about 50-60% of regular speed). Would it be better to film this scene in 60i or 24p? I just didn't know if 60i would look better in slow-mo or not.

You are shooting 24p and the camera adds a 3/2 pulldown and lays this on tape as 2997/60i so when you shoot 30p you will be getting a strong progressive frame laid to tape as 60i without the interlaced pulldown frames added from shooting 24p. I would shoot these slowmo's in 30p.
    Good luck

  • Is it Possible to Convert 60i Footage to 24p?

I was wondering if it's possible to convert footage shot in 60i to 24p and if it'll look good.
Like, if I took 60i footage and put it out at 24 FPS in progressive scan through compressor, would it take out the correct frames? Or would it look all weird?
Just curious if it looks good and if there's a good way to do it.

Probably your best bet would be http://www.nattress.com and his standards converter. Moves 60i to 24.
    Good luck,

  • 60i to 60p ... to 24p for slow motion purposes!

I hope I am not shot and killed for posting this topic as I (think) I am aware of the extensive amount of forums that already exist on this topic.
I shot some test footage at 60i on my Canon XH-A1. I would LOVE to see this slowed down to 40% speed running in a 24p timeline in Final Cut Pro.
I have FCS2. Surely this is possible. I am aware I need to convert my 60i footage to 60p footage but I am confused about whether or not Compressor can do this or not. Can I convert 1080-60i directly to 1080-60p? Or is this impossible? Does it have to be converted to 720-60p?
I would love to know how to make Compressor do this and if not, what can? Once I have this 60p footage (whether it be 1080 or 720), how do I put it into a 24p sequence in final cut? I almost got there using 720-60p but there was some wierd interlacing problem that was going on. Also, final cut did not use the existing frames to make it slow motion, it just spread out the 24 frames per second using normal frame blending.
Sorry if this is confusing, but I am confused! I don't want to use Optical flow or frame blending or anything, I just want to go form 60i to 24p at 40% speed using all the existing frames.
ANY help would be appreciated (or a link to somewhere where it can be explained effectively using FCS apps...)
    THANKS!

I owe everyone an apology, because I gave the wrong information about the video file. As you will recall, I was frustrated that it appeared to play at only 23.97 frames per second in Final Cut Pro, even though I thought I had shot it at 60 fps. Yesterday I discovered why it appeared to play at a different frame rate, but the reason was so bizarre, so unbelievable, that I began to doubt my own sanity.
Friends, the video clip changes frame rate in the middle! Yes, it does. You see, I had been looking at a portion of the shot with the lower frame rate; later in the same shot, the frame rate increased to 60 fps. You may ask, how is this possible? I do not know. I only know that I shot it with the little Sanyo HD1000 camcorder, which records as AVCHD (h.264), and the clip changed to a slower frame rate when the shot got darker, then back to 60 fps when the shot got brighter. Apparently the camcorder reacted to the lack of light by decreasing the frame rate, in order to have time to gather more light for each frame.

  • 23.98 (24p) PAL in DVDSP?

    23.98 (24p) PAL in DVDSP?
    quote from the DVDSP manual:
To create a 24 fps MPEG-2 asset, you need to use Compressor (included with DVD Studio Pro) or a third-party encoder that supports encoding 24 fps MPEG-2 assets…
…You can use 24 fps video assets in tracks just like you would use regular 29.97 fps or 25 fps video assets, as long as they match the project’s video standard (NTSC or PAL). You can also combine 24 fps assets with regular video assets within a track, as long as they use the same resolution.
    Full page here:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/dvdstudiopro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=4%2 6section=3%26tasks=true
We have tried this with CinemaCraft creating a 23.98p file 720x576 using a custom preset.
When attempting to bring this into a PAL DVDSP project - we are told the asset is NTSC and can't be used.
We contacted CinemaCraft - they tested and got the same result.
Both we and they created a 23.98p NTSC and tried to bring this into a NTSC project as a test - DVDSP stated file was invalid.
CinemaCraft support deduced DVDSP does not support 24p files - which seems contradictory with the text from the manual.
We tried to make a 23.98p or 24p PAL M2V with the standard Apple Compressor (without CinemaCraft) - as soon as we select PAL the frame rate drop down jumps to 25fps and is greyed out.
It would appear Compressor is not capable of creating 24p PAL files.
It also seems DVDSP doesn't support them even if you can make them.
We have a 24p ProRes422 feature and would love to not speed it up, was hoping to 'flag' the stream for 2:2 pulldown in the player - sounded good in theory.
    Anyone done that here?

You're actually better off not using CF24. Best would be to shoot 50i on the Z1u and de-interlace then slow from 25p to 24p in post. This works very well.
Next best is probably to use my Standards Conversion www.nattress.com 60i to 24p plugin which does a better job than the CF24 mode, and you don't have to go to the bother of removing pulldown.

  • Canon HV20 24p: 3rd party solution?

I'm looking hard at buying a Canon HV20 for 24p work and using with FCE, which I'd be upgrading from an old version (and learning how to use, but that's another story LOL!).
It's my understanding that FCE can't edit the HV20's 24p-format output. I'm wondering if there are third-party fixes for this, either a standalone converter of some kind or a plug-in. It's my understanding that, failing this, I could activate a Windows partition on my new iMac and work with Windows software to edit the 24p stuff, but that is something I'd really like to avoid.

  • Capturing 60i to FCP5 from Jvc HDV

Hello! I am having a really hard time capturing 60i and 24p footage into our Final Cut Pro 5 system. We have tried the codecs and even changing the settings. Can anyone walk us through this? We have a brand new JVC HDV camera and can get the 30 frame rate to capture but not the others. We are connected to the camera through a fire wire.
We have plenty of hard drive space.
    Thanks a bunch!

So far the ONLY frame rate from teh JVC that FCP supports is 720p30.
You can see if HDVxDV.com or www.lumierehd.com have versions that support and convert that format. FCP cannot do it at this time.

  • 60i SD?

OK, I just got my mind blown yesterday trying to figure out my Canon XL2. For the last 3 months I've been using it, I'v been shooting in its 30p mode and capturing using the Easy Setup DV NTSC. Fine. But everything still looked as though it was shot in 24p (grainy, "film-like"), not smooth. Then I did some research online and found that it will only look smooth and "video-like" shooting 60i. So I go into FCP's manual to see what this means, how I should capture it and handle it, and it there's only one reference to 60i (using the search function in the Users Guide)...and that's talking about HD. But I'm not shooting HD.
So, if I want to get the "video" look (which I get using 30p on the Panasonic DVX-100...weird), can I shoot in Canon's 60i and still use the same sequence preset in FCP, or do I have to do something else?
Sorry for the long post. And thanks in advance. I tried to do a search for some of some of the threads here and couldn't find an answer to my specific problem.
    Jonathan

    Thanks, Zeb.
Wish I would have known that when I started out!
So I would just go on capturing and editing in the
Easy Setup of DV NTSC 48kHz and everything will be
    fine, right?
    Jonathan
Yes you are right. We use Xl2's exclusively here. Use DV NTSC 48k yada yada.
At the risk of sounding elitist, you really should thumb through your Xl2 manual. There's a lot of things you can screw up if you don't know your settings and you can wind up wasting your and, even worse, a clients time. Not to mention your professional reputation. But whatever
    Just for future refernce
    24p="film look"
30p=almost "film look" sort of a hybrid between 60i and 24p

Hi. I can't capture from my cannon video camera to FInal Cut or iMovie. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think my iMac is recognizing the camera. I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
    You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

  • Temporal compression conforming HDV  1080i60 to 23.98fps

Footage was shot on Sony EX1. Then Sony's transfer tool was used to bring it into FCP. Before import, the file says it is 59.94i (23.98p).
In final cut it says 29.97 (basically the same).
The footage needs to be changed in 23.98 fps. In cinema tools, the clip analysis says HDV 1080i60 29.97 quality:normal with temporal (what is that)?
The button to conform is grey and not active. I have tried batch conform and that leads to cinema tools creating a new source folder for "skipped clips" due to "temporal compression"

  • NTSC vs PAL: difference in compatibility

I wonder if there is a difference between compatibility of NTSC and PAL camera's of the same model. Checking on the supported camcorder list one can read the Sony HDR XR500 is compatible for NTSC but isn't mentioned in the PAL list.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290?viewlocale=en_US#2
I'm thinking of buying this camera in a PAL version and use iMovie09 and FCE 4. Does anyone knows of this will work without any third party software?
    Thanks in advance...

I have heard that there is no such a thing as NTSC HD or PAL HD and that HD is just HD regardless of the country it's in. Is that true?
Yes, its true. As far as "definition" goes, there is no difference between a 1080 image shot in a PAL region and a 1080 image shot in an NTSC region. However, which frame rate you intend to shoot at eg 50i / 60i, 25p / 30p etc will certainly make a difference. Most consumer level HD camera's are restricted depending upon the electrical frequency of the market region they are being sold in. If your camera was purchased in a 60Hz ( NTSC ) region then its likely your camera will only support 60i, 30p 24p etc. If its purchased in a 50Hz (PAL) region then it's likely to only support 50i, 25p etc.
Generally it is only the higher end pro camera's that support switching between systems ... neither the HV20 nor the XH-A1 have this capability.
Could I rent an HD camera in Europe and shoot stuff with it there and then bring the resulting tapes back here to the U.S. and play them on my U.S.-purchased HD cameras and decks and load it into my current FCP setup in L.A. without any problem?
Well that would depend on what camera you rented as compared to what your current setup is ... what's your current setup and what do you have in mind to rent?
